Chiral Symmetry Breaking in Presence of Strong Quantizing Magnetic Fields- A Nambu-Jona-Lasino Model with Semi-Classical Approximation

The breaking of chiral symmetry of light quarks at zero temperature in presence of strong quantizing magnetic field is studied using Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model with Thomas-Fermi type semi-classical formalism. It is found that the dynamically generated light quark mass can never become zero if the Landau levels are populated and increases with the increase of magnetic field strength.

Effect of Strong Quantizing Magnetic Field on the Transport Properties of Dense Stellar Plasma

The transport properties of dense stellar electron-proton plasma is studied following an exact relativistic formalism in presence of strong quantizing magnetic field. The variation of transport coefficients with magnetic field are found to be insensitive for the field strengths $\leq 10^{17}$G, beyond which all of them abruptly go to zero. As a consequence, the electron-proton plasma behaves like a superfluid insulator in presence of ultra-strong magnetic field.

Impossibility of Spin Polarized States for Neutron Star / Proto-neutron Star Matter in $β$-Equilibrium Condition

It is shown explicitly that a ferromagnetic transition of neutron star (NS) / proto-neutron star (PNS) matter in the $β$-equilibrium condition with $σ-ω-ρ$ exchange type of mean field approximation can actually occur if and only if the neutrinos remain trapped within the system, and perhaps it is also necessary for the neutrinos / anti-neutrinos to carry some finite non-zero mass. It is further shown that the electrons also play a significant role in this transition process. It is therefore, very much unlikely that such a transition of spin polarization can really take place in old neutron stars of very low temperature, whereas, the possibility of spontaneous ferromagnetic transition cannot be ruled out in a newly born PNS.

Collapse/Flattening of Nucleonic Bags in Ultra-Strong Magnetic Field

It is shown explicitly using MIT bag model that in presence of ultra-strong magnetic fields, a nucleon either flattens or collapses in the direction transverse to the external magnetic field in the classical or quantum mechanical picture respectively. Which gives rise to some kind of mechanical instability. Alternatively, it is argued that the bag model of confinement may not be applicable in this strange situation.

Electrons as Quasi-Bosons in Strong Magnetic Fields and the Stability of Magnetars

Following the recent ideas of Dryzek, Kato, Muñoz and Singleton \cite{R1} (henceforth we call this paper as R1), that the composite system consisting of an electron along with its screened electric field and within the sphere of influence, the trapped magnetic field of white dwarf can behave like a boson, we have argued that such an exotic transition (bosonization) of electronic component in strongly magnetized neutron star matter in $β$-equilibrium can make the existence of magnetars physically viable.

Pauli Paramagnetism of Neutron Star Matter and the Upper Limit for Neutron Star Magnetic Fields

A relativistic version of Pauli paramagnetism for $n-p-e$ system inside a strongly magnetized neutron star has been developed. An analytical expressions for the saturation value of magnetic field strength for each of these constituents at which they are completely polarized have been obtained. From the fully polarized configuration of electronic component, an upper limit for neutron star magnetic field is predicted. It has been concluded that indeed, magnetars, as stronly magnetized young neutron stars can not exist if the constituents are electron, proton and neutron in $β$-equilibrium. An alternative model has been proposed.

Electrical Conductivity at the Core of a Magnetar

An expression for the electrical conductivity at the core of a magnetar is derived using Boltzmann kinetic equation with the relaxation time approximation. The rates for the relevant scattering processes, e.g., electron-electron and electron-proton are evaluated in presence of strong quantizing magnetic fields using tree level diagrams. It is found that in presence of a strong quantizing magnetic field, electrical conductivity behaves like a second rank tensor. However, if the zeroth Landau levels are only occupied by the charged particles, it again behaves like a scaler of a one dimensional system.

Magnetic Deformation of Atoms in the Crust of Magnetars

Some special features of magnetically deformed multi-electron atoms in the crustal region of strongly magnetized neutron stars (magnetars) are studied with the relativistic version of semi-classical Thomas-Fermi model. An analytical solution of Poisson's equation with cylindrical symmetry is obtained. The variation of atomic dimension with magnetic field strength is also studied. An expression for atomic quadrupole moment, appears because of magnetic deformation is derived. The effect of atomic quadrupole-quadrupole interaction in the equation of state of crustal matter of magnetar is briefly discussed.

Can a Very Low-Luminosity and Cold White Dwarf be a Self-gravitating Bose Condensed System

An entirely new model for the structure as well as for the cooling mechanism of white dwarfs has been proposed. We have argued that the massive part of the constituents of white dwarfs- the positively charged ions are boson and under the extreme physical condition (density and temperature) at the interior, it is possible to have condensation of charged bose gas. We have tried to establish that a cold white dwarf is a self gravitating charged bose condensed system.

Can There be Quark Matter Core in a Strongly Magnetized Neutron Star?

The effect of strong quantizing magnetic field on the nucleation of quark matter droplets and on the chemical evolution of nascent quark phase at the core of a neutron star are investigated. The surface energy of quark phase diverges logarithmically. As a consequence there can not be a first order transition to quark phase. However, a metal-insulator type of second order transition is possible unless the field strength exceeds $10^{20}$G. The study of chemical evolution of newborn quark phase shows that in $β$-equilibrium the system becomes energetically unstable.

Thomas-Fermi-Dirac model for Low Density Stellar Matter in Presence of a Strong Quantising Magnetic Field

The effect of strong quantising magnetic field on low density stellar matter is investigated using Thomas-Fermi-Dirac (TFD) model. The Wigner-Seitz cell structure is assumed for the low density matter. The significant changes in the properties of such low density matter in presence of strong magnetic fields are discussed. It is seen that the decay time scale for magnetic field decreases by at least two orders of magnitude in such model calculaion.

Chemical Evolution of Strongly Magnetized Quark Core in a Newborn Neutron Star

The chemical evolution of nascent quark matter core in a newborn compact neutron star is studied in presence of a strong magnetic field. The effective rate of strange quark production in degenerate quark matter core in presence of strong magnetic fields is obtained. The investigations show that in presence of strong magnetic fields a quark matter core becomes energetically unstable and hence a deconfinement transition to quark matter at the centre of a compact neutron star under such circumstances is not possible. The critical strength of magnetic field at the central core to make the system energetically unstable with respect to dense nuclear matter is found to be $\sim 4.4\times 10^{13}$G. This is the typical strength at which the Landau levels for electrons are populated. The other possible phase transitions at such high density and ultra strong magnetic field environment are discussed.

Strong magnetic field in a protoneutron star

We investigate the influence of a strong interior magnetic field on the structure and composition of a protoneutron star allowing quark-hadron phase transition. In contrast to protoneutron stars with noninteracting quark phase, the stars with interacting quark phase have smaller maximum star masses than those of neutrino-free stars. The strong field makes the overall equation of state softer compared to the field-free case favoring the evolution of a protoneutron star more towards a neutron star than a black hole.

Rapid cooling of magnetized neutron stars

The neutrino emissivities resulting from direct URCA processes in neutron stars are calculated in a relativistic Dirac-Hartree approach in presence of a magnetic field. In a quark or a hyperon matter environment, the emissivity due to nucleon direct URCA processes is suppressed relative to that from pure nuclear matter. In all the cases studied, the magnetic field enhances emissivity compared to the field-free cases.

Quantizing magnetic field and quark-hadron phase transition in a neutron star

We investigate the influence of a strong magnetic field on various properties of neutron stars with quark-hadron phase transition. The one-gluon exchange contribution in a magnetic field is calculated in a relativistic Dirac-Hartree-Fock approach. In a magnetic field of $5\times 10^{18}$G in the center of the star, the overall equation of state is softer in comparison to the field-free case resulting in the reduction of maximum mass of the neutron star.
