Programmable Strain-Induced Intrinsic Circularly Polarized Emission from All-Inorganic Perovskite Nanocrystal Glass

Generating circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) is important for chiral photonics and high-density optical information storage. Current approaches to CPL in semiconductor nanomaterials often employ chiral organic molecules, which hinder pixel-by-pixel integration of different chiral states onto a single monolithic substrate. Here, we realize chiral-molecule-free, programmable CPL from all-inorganic perovskite nanocrystals synthesized by direct laser writing in glass. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy reveals a core-shell-like variation in interplanar spacing, consistent with torsional lattice distortion. Density functional theory calculations further show that torsional lattice distortion lifts the spin degeneracy of the band-edge electronic states. Power-dependent CPL measurements reveal a transition from birefringence-mediated circular polarization to intrinsic CPL. Furthermore, by systematically tuning the incident linear polarization angle and focal depth, we deterministically program both the handedness and magnitude of the CPL, with |glum| of approximately 4 x 10^-3. By demonstrating deterministic control of intrinsic chiroptical functionality through direct laser writing, our work establishes a strategy for spatially integrated chiral emitters in monolithic materials.

Three-dimensional single gyroid photonic crystals with a mid-infrared bandgap

A gyroid structure is a distinct morphology that is triply periodic and consists of minimal isosurfaces containing no straight lines. We have designed and synthesized amorphous silicon (a-Si) mid-infrared gyroid photonic crystals that exhibit a complete bandgap in infrared spectroscopy measurements. Photonic crystals were synthesized by deposition of a-Si/Al2O3 coatings onto a sacrificial polymer scaffold defined by two-photon lithography. We observed a 100% reflectance at 7.5 \mum for single gyroids with a unit cell size of 4.5 \mum, in agreement with the photonic bandgap position predicted from full-wave electromagnetic simulations, whereas the observed reflection peak shifted to 8 um for a 5.5 \mum unit cell size. This approach represents a simulation-fabrication-characterization platform to realize three-dimensional gyroid photonic crystals with well-defined dimensions in real space and tailored properties in momentum space.

Avoided Crossing Patterns and Spectral Gaps of Surface Plasmon Modes in Gold Nano-Structures

The transmission of ultrashort (7 fs) broadband laser pulses through periodic gold nano-structures is studied. The distribution of the transmitted light intensity over wavelength and angle shows an efficient coupling of the incident p-polarized light to two counter-propagating surface plasmon (SP) modes. As a result of the mode interaction, the avoided crossing patterns exhibit energy and momentum gaps, which depend on the configuration of the nano-structure and the wavelength. Variations of the widths of the SP resonances and an abrupt change of the mode interaction in the vicinity of the avoided crossing region are observed. These features are explained by the model of two coupled modes and a coupling change due to switching from the high frequency dark mode to the low frequency bright mode for increasing wavelength of the excitation light.
