Carroll-Cotton Tensors and Gravitational Radiation at Null Infinity

We provide a first-principles definition of Cotton tensors on conformal Carroll geometries by gauging the conformal Carroll algebra. On the mathematical side, this analysis yields a conformally covariant object designed to quantify deviations from conformal flatness in Carrollian geometries. On the physical side, it offers a powerful geometric tool to describe gravitational radiative degrees of freedom at the conformal boundary of four-dimensional asymptotically flat spacetimes. Unlike the Bondi news, whose fully-covariant definition requires amendment by supplementary data that we identify with the Geroch tensor, the Carroll-Cotton tensors offer the natural geometric objects to quantify deviations from stationarity due to the emission of gravitational waves.

Flat from AdS: in any dimension and for any spin

The space of solutions to the free equations of motion for massless fields of arbitrary integer spin in Minkowski spacetime is recovered as a smooth limit of the anti-de Sitter solution space for any even spacetime dimension. The infinite set of boundary data near null infinity that characterise solutions in Minkowski spacetime is obtained from an expansion of the anti-de Sitter source and vev in powers of the cosmological constant. In particular, the source gives rise to the analogue of the gravitational shear tensor, while the vev yields the analogues of the mass and angular-momentum aspects, as well as the subleading infinite tower of boundary data. These identifications are further supported by the branching of the source and vev into representations of the Lorentz algebra identified with the conformal algebra of the celestial sphere.

Planons and their Carroll-Galilei symmetries

We study the dynamics of planons, particles whose mobility is restricted to a plane, through the classification of coadjoint orbits and unitary irreducible representations of the centrally extended planon group. Planons are closely related to Galilei/Bargmann symmetries and, remarkably, the often-ignored massless coadjoint orbits of the Galilei group play a central r\^ole in their description. We thereby provide a nontrivial physical interpretation of these orbits. We further construct classical and quantum dipoles as bound states of monopoles, where the restricted planar motion arises from a novel mixed Carroll-Galilei symmetry. We also argue that the simplest and already experimentally realised systems with Carroll symmetry are in crystals.

Carrollian-holographic Derivation of Gravitational Flux-Balance Laws

We demonstrate that the BMS evolution equations for the mass and angular momentum aspects in asymptotically flat Einstein gravity follow from local Carroll, Weyl, and diffeomorphism invariance at the null conformal boundary, upon providing a minimalistic holographic dictionary as the sole input from the bulk. This result is a significant step in the quest for a flat-space holographic correspondence and offers a geometric implementation of the radiative degrees of freedom that source the boundary theory in the presence of bulk gravitational waves.

A note on non-Lorentzian duality symmetries

We work out non-Lorentzian dual actions for electromagnetism and linearised gravity, both in the Carrollian and Galilean cases. This is done in the same way as for Lorentzian theories, by first constructing a parent action that reduces to a pair of dual actions. In the case of Maxwell theory, each pair of dual actions consists of the known `electric' and `magnetic' limits of the original theories, showing that these limits are related by an off-shell electromagnetic duality. We have obtained dualities between on one hand the non-Lorentzian contractions of linearised gravity in second-order form, and on the other hand the theories one obtains by gauging the corresponding kinematic algebras. In the Carrollian contraction, these dual actions reproduce the known `electric' and `magnetic' Carrollian theories of gravity, and we find a similar result in the Galilean case.

Fractons on curved spacetime in $2+1$ dimensions

We study dipole Chern-Simons theory with and without a cosmological constant in $2+1$ dimensions. We write the theory in a second order formulation and show that this leads to a fracton gauge theory coupled to Aristotelian geometry which can also be coupled to matter. This coupling exhibits the remarkable property of generalizing dipole gauge invariance to curved spacetimes, without placing any limitations on the possible geometries. We also use the second order formulation to construct a higher dimensional generalization of the action. Finally, for the $(2+1)$-dimensional Chern-Simons theory we find solutions and interpret these as electric monopoles, analyze their charges and argue that the asymptotic symmetries are infinite-dimensional.

Cartan-like formulation of electric Carrollian gravity

We present a Cartan-like first-order action principle for electric Carrollian gravity. The action is invariant under the local homogeneous Carroll group, albeit in a different representation than the one obtained by gauging the Carroll algebra. Additionally, we show that this first-order action can be derived from a smooth Carrollian limit of the Einstein-Cartan action. The connection with the Hamiltonian and metric forms of the action for electric Carrollian gravity, as well as with previous works in the literature, is also discussed.

Holographic Carrollian Conformal Scalars

We provide holographic realisations in Minkowski spacetime of a free conformal Carrollian scalar field living at null infinity. To this end, we first show that the electric and magnetic limits of a relativistic conformal scalar are equivalent and we study the representation of the Carroll, Poincar\'e and BMS algebras that is realised on the resulting solution space. We then realise it as a quotient of the solution space of a free massless scalar in Minkowski spacetime with unusual falloff, in full analogy with the interpretation of Dirac's singleton as a shortened scalar in Anti de Sitter spacetime.

Galilei particles revisited

We revisit the classifications of classical and quantum galilean particles: that is, we fully classify homogeneous symplectic manifolds and unitary irreducible projective representations of the Galilei group. Equivalently, these are coadjoint orbits and unitary irreducible representations of the Bargmann group, the universal central extension of the Galilei group. We provide an action principle in each case, discuss the nonrelativistic limit, as well as exhibit, whenever possible, the unitary irreducible representations in terms of fields on Galilei spacetime. Motivated by a forthcoming study of planons we pay close attention to the mobility of the less familiar massless Galilei particles.

Flat from anti-de Sitter

Ricci-flat solutions to Einstein's equations in four dimensions are obtained as the flat limit of Einstein spacetimes with negative cosmological constant. In the limiting process, the anti-de Sitter energy--momentum tensor is expanded in Laurent series in powers of the cosmological constant, endowing the system with the infinite number of boundary data, characteristic of the asymptotically flat solution space. The governing flat Einstein dynamics is recovered as the limit of the original energy--momentum conservation law and from the additional requirement of the line-element finiteness, providing at each order the necessary set of flux-balance equations for the boundary data. This analysis is conducted using a covariant version of the Newman--Unti gauge designed for taking advantage of the boundary Carrollian structure emerging at vanishing cosmological constant and its Carrollian attributes such as the Cotton tensor.

New higher-spin curvatures in flat space

It was shown that the Lie algebra underlying higher-spin holography admits a contraction including a Poincar\'e subalgebra in any space-time dimensions. The associated curvatures, however, do not reproduce upon linearisation those that are usually employed to formulate the equations of motion of free massless particles in Minkowski space. We show that, despite this mismatch, the new linearised curvatures can also be used to describe massless higher-spin fields. This suggests a new way to build interacting higher-spin gauge theories in Minkowski space that may admit a holographic description.

Carrollian conformal scalar as flat-space singleton

We show that, in any space-time dimension, the on-shell (electric) conformal Carrollian scalar can be interpreted as the flat-space limit of the singleton representation of the conformal algebra. In fact, a recently proposed higher-spin algebra for Minkowski spacetime amounts to the Poincar\'e enveloping algebra on the corresponding module. This higher-spin algebra is a contraction of that entering Vasiliev's equations, which can be constructed analogously from the singleton representation of the conformal algebra. We also show that the higher-spin extension of the Poincar\'e algebra we consider is a subalgebra of all symmetries of the conformal Carrollian scalar, given by a higher-spin version of the (extended) BMS algebra.

Infinite distances in multicritical CFTs and higher-spin holography

We investigate the swampland distance conjecture in higher-spin gravity. To this end, we study multicritical generalizations of large-$N$ vector models, bosonic and fermionic, and we compute the quantum information distance along selected renormalization-group trajectories toward the higher-spin limit. In striking contrast to the expected exponential decay of higher-spin masses or anomalous dimensions, we find that infinite-distance limits in these models lead to a power-like decay. This suggests that stringy exponential decays are characteristic of matrix-like gauge theories, rather than vector models. We corroborate this notion studying the information distance along coupling variations in Chern-Simons-matter CFTs, where matrix-like degrees of freedom dominate over vector-like ones.

Magnetic Carrollian gravity from the Carroll algebra

We explicitly establish the equivalence between the magnetic Carrollian limit of Einstein gravity defined through the Hamiltonian formalism and the Carrollian theory of gravity defined through a gauging of the Carroll algebra along the lines of standard Poincaré (or (A)dS) gaugings.

Carrollian and Galilean conformal higher-spin algebras in any dimensions

We present higher-spin algebras containing a Poincaré subalgebra and with the same set of generators as the Lie algebras that are relevant to Vasiliev's equations in any space-time dimension $D \geq 3$. Given these properties, they can be considered either as candidate rigid symmetries for higher-spin gauge theories in Minkowski space or as Carrollian conformal higher-spin symmetries in one less dimension. We build these Lie algebras as quotients of the universal enveloping algebra of $iso(1,D-1)$ and we show how to recover them as Inönü-Wigner contractions of the rigid symmetries of higher-spin gauge theories in Anti de Sitter space or, equivalently, of relativistic conformal higher-spin symmetries. We use the same techniques to also define higher-spin algebras with the same set of generators and containing a Galilean conformal subalgebra, to be interpreted as non-relativistic limits of the conformal symmetries of a free scalar field. We begin by showing that the known flat-space higher-spin algebras in three dimensions can be obtained as quotients of the universal enveloping algebra of $iso(1,2)$ and then we extend the analysis along the same lines to a generic number of space-time dimensions. We also discuss the peculiarities that emerge for $D=5$.

Cosmology in $f(Q)$ geometry

The universal character of the gravitational interaction provided by the equivalence principle motivates a geometrical description of gravity. The standard formulation of General Relativity à la Einstein attributes gravity to the spacetime curvature, to which we have grown accustomed. However, this perception has masked the fact that two alternative, though equivalent, formulations of General Relativity in flat spacetimes exist, where gravity can be fully ascribed either to torsion or to non-metricity. The latter allows a simpler geometrical formulation of General Relativity that is oblivious to the affine spacetime structure. Generalisations along this line permit to generate teleparallel and symmetric teleparallel theories of gravity with exceptional properties. In this work we explore modified gravity theories based on non-linear extensions of the non-metricity scalar. After presenting some general properties and briefly studying some interesting background cosmologies (including accelerating solutions with relevance for inflation and dark energy), we analyse the behaviour of the cosmological perturbations. Tensor perturbations feature a re-scaling of the corresponding Newton's constant, while vector perturbations do not contribute in the absence of vector sources. In the scalar sector we find two additional propagating modes, hinting that $f(Q)$ theories introduce, at least, two additional degrees of freedom. These scalar modes disappear around maximally symmetric backgrounds because of the appearance of an accidental residual gauge symmetry corresponding to a restricted diffeomorphism. We finally discuss the potential strong coupling problems of these maximally symmetric backgrounds caused by the discontinuity in the number of propagating modes.

Gluon density fluctuations in dilute hadrons

Motivated by the relation existing between the gluon density in a hadron and the multiplicity of the particles measured in the final state of hadron-nucleus collisions, we study systematically the fluctuations of the gluon density in onia, which are the simplest dilute hadrons, of different sizes and at various rapidities. We argue that the small and the large-multiplicity tails of the gluon distributions present universal features, which should translate into properties of the multiplicity of the particles measured in the final state of high-energy proton-nucleus collisions, or of deep-inelastic scattering at a future electron-ion collider. We propose simple physical pictures of the rare events populating the tails of the multiplicity distribution that allow us to derive analytical formulas describing these universal behaviors, and we compare them to the results of Monte Carlo simulations.

Distribution of the number of particles in the final state of hadron-nucleus collisions

Recently, Liou, Mueller and Munier have argued that proton-nucleus collisions at the LHC may give access to the full statistics of the event-by-event fluctuations of the gluon density in the proton. Indeed, the number of particles produced in an event in rapidity slices in the fragmentation region of the proton may, under some well-defined assumptions, be directly related to the number of gluons which have a transverse momentum larger than the nuclear saturation scale present in the proton at the time of the interaction with the nucleus. A first calculation of the probability distribution of the number of gluons in a hadron was performed, using the color dipole model. In this talk, we review this proposal, and present preliminary numerical calculations which support the analytical results obtained so far.
