Weighted blowups and 3d Poisson desingularizations

We establish existence of functorial orbifold reductions of singularities for Poisson subvarieties in smooth Poisson threefolds. Namely, we show that with enough weighted blowups, one can reduce the singularities of such Poisson subvarieties to certain simple, explicit, local normal forms: Du Val surface singularities where the Poisson structure is locally Jacobian, and plane curves lying in the vanishing locus of a particular linear Poisson structure. The proof combines Abramovich--Temkin--W{\l}odarczyk and McQuillan's recent approach to resolution of singularities for varieties via weighted blowups with some new normal forms for three-dimensional Poisson brackets derived via Poisson cohomology. Along the way, we describe necessary and sufficient conditions for a polyvector field to lift to the weighted blowup of an orbifold along a suborbifold, generalizing criteria of Polishchuk for unweighted blowups of Poisson structures on smooth varieties.

Experimental n-Hexane-Air Expanding Spherical Flames

The effects of initial pressure and temperature on the laminar burning speed of n-hexane-air mixtures were investigated experimentally and numerically. The spherically expanding flame technique with a nonlinear extrapolation procedure was employed to measure the laminar burning speed at atmospheric and sub-atmospheric pressures and at nominal temperatures ranging from 296 to 422 K. The results indicated that the laminar burning speed increases as pressure decreases and as temperature increases. The predictions of three reaction models taken from the literature were compared with the experimental results from the present study and previous data for n-hexane-air mixtures. Based on a quantitative analysis of the model performances, it was found that the most appropriate model to use for predicting laminar flame properties of n-hexane-air mixtures is JetSurF.

Influence of a local change of depth on the behavior of bouncing oil drops

The work of Couder \textit{et al} (see also Bush \textit{et al}) inspired consideration of the impact of a submerged obstacle, providing a local change of depth, on the behavior of oil drops in the bouncing regime. In the linked videos, we recreate some of their results for a drop bouncing on a uniform depth bath of the same liquid undergoing vertical oscillations just below the conditions for Faraday instability, and show a range of new behaviors associated with change of depth. This article accompanies a fluid dynamics video entered into the Gallery of Fluid Motion of the 66th Annual Meeting of the APS Division of Fluid Dynamics.
