Recapture as You Want

With the increasing prevalence and more powerful camera systems of mobile devices, people can conveniently take photos in their daily life, which naturally brings the demand for more intelligent photo post-processing techniques, especially on those portrait photos. In this paper, we present a portrait recapture method enabling users to easily edit their portrait to desired posture/view, body figure and clothing style, which are very challenging to achieve since it requires to simultaneously perform non-rigid deformation of human body, invisible body-parts reasoning and semantic-aware editing. We decompose the editing procedure into semantic-aware geometric and appearance transformation. In geometric transformation, a semantic layout map is generated that meets user demands to represent part-level spatial constraints and further guides the semantic-aware appearance transformation. In appearance transformation, we design two novel modules, Semantic-aware Attentive Transfer (SAT) and Layout Graph Reasoning (LGR), to conduct intra-part transfer and inter-part reasoning, respectively. SAT module produces each human part by paying attention to the semantically consistent regions in the source portrait. It effectively addresses the non-rigid deformation issue and well preserves the intrinsic structure/appearance with rich texture details. LGR module utilizes body skeleton knowledge to construct a layout graph that connects all relevant part features, where graph reasoning mechanism is used to propagate information among part nodes to mine their relations. In this way, LGR module infers invisible body parts and guarantees global coherence among all the parts. Extensive experiments on DeepFashion, Market-1501 and in-the-wild photos demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of our approach. Video demo is at: \url{https://youtu.be/vTyq9HL6jgw}.

A Real-Time Cross-modality Correlation Filtering Method for Referring Expression Comprehension

Referring expression comprehension aims to localize the object instance described by a natural language expression. Current referring expression methods have achieved good performance. However, none of them is able to achieve real-time inference without accuracy drop. The reason for the relatively slow inference speed is that these methods artificially split the referring expression comprehension into two sequential stages including proposal generation and proposal ranking. It does not exactly conform to the habit of human cognition. To this end, we propose a novel Realtime Cross-modality Correlation Filtering method (RCCF). RCCF reformulates the referring expression comprehension as a correlation filtering process. The expression is first mapped from the language domain to the visual domain and then treated as a template (kernel) to perform correlation filtering on the image feature map. The peak value in the correlation heatmap indicates the center points of the target box. In addition, RCCF also regresses a 2-D object size and 2-D offset. The center point coordinates, object size and center point offset together to form the target bounding box. Our method runs at 40 FPS while achieving leading performance in RefClef, RefCOCO, RefCOCO+ and RefCOCOg benchmarks. In the challenging RefClef dataset, our methods almost double the state-of-the-art performance (34.70% increased to 63.79%). We hope this work can arouse more attention and studies to the new cross-modality correlation filtering framework as well as the one-stage framework for referring expression comprehension.

AdversarialNAS: Adversarial Neural Architecture Search for GANs

Neural Architecture Search (NAS) that aims to automate the procedure of architecture design has achieved promising results in many computer vision fields. In this paper, we propose an AdversarialNAS method specially tailored for Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) to search for a superior generative model on the task of unconditional image generation. The AdversarialNAS is the first method that can search the architectures of generator and discriminator simultaneously in a differentiable manner. During searching, the designed adversarial search algorithm does not need to comput any extra metric to evaluate the performance of the searched architecture, and the search paradigm considers the relevance between the two network architectures and improves their mutual balance. Therefore, AdversarialNAS is very efficient and only takes 1 GPU day to search for a superior generative model in the proposed large search space ($10^{38}$). Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of our method. The discovered generative model sets a new state-of-the-art FID score of $10.87$ and highly competitive Inception Score of $8.74$ on CIFAR-10. Its transferability is also proven by setting new state-of-the-art FID score of $26.98$ and Inception score of $9.63$ on STL-10. Code is at: \url{https://github.com/chengaopro/AdversarialNAS}.

PPDM: Parallel Point Detection and Matching for Real-time Human-Object Interaction Detection

We propose a single-stage Human-Object Interaction (HOI) detection method that has outperformed all existing methods on HICO-DET dataset at 37 fps on a single Titan XP GPU. It is the first real-time HOI detection method. Conventional HOI detection methods are composed of two stages, i.e., human-object proposals generation, and proposals classification. Their effectiveness and efficiency are limited by the sequential and separate architecture. In this paper, we propose a Parallel Point Detection and Matching (PPDM) HOI detection framework. In PPDM, an HOI is defined as a point triplet < human point, interaction point, object point>. Human and object points are the center of the detection boxes, and the interaction point is the midpoint of the human and object points. PPDM contains two parallel branches, namely point detection branch and point matching branch. The point detection branch predicts three points. Simultaneously, the point matching branch predicts two displacements from the interaction point to its corresponding human and object points. The human point and the object point originated from the same interaction point are considered as matched pairs. In our novel parallel architecture, the interaction points implicitly provide context and regularization for human and object detection. The isolated detection boxes are unlikely to form meaning HOI triplets are suppressed, which increases the precision of HOI detection. Moreover, the matching between human and object detection boxes is only applied around limited numbers of filtered candidate interaction points, which saves much computational cost. Additionally, we build a new application-oriented database named HOI-A, which severs as a good supplement to the existing datasets. The source code and the dataset will be made publicly available to facilitate the development of HOI detection.

Tree-Structured Policy based Progressive Reinforcement Learning for Temporally Language Grounding in Video

Temporally language grounding in untrimmed videos is a newly-raised task in video understanding. Most of the existing methods suffer from inferior efficiency, lacking interpretability, and deviating from the human perception mechanism. Inspired by human's coarse-to-fine decision-making paradigm, we formulate a novel Tree-Structured Policy based Progressive Reinforcement Learning (TSP-PRL) framework to sequentially regulate the temporal boundary by an iterative refinement process. The semantic concepts are explicitly represented as the branches in the policy, which contributes to efficiently decomposing complex policies into an interpretable primitive action. Progressive reinforcement learning provides correct credit assignment via two task-oriented rewards that encourage mutual promotion within the tree-structured policy. We extensively evaluate TSP-PRL on the Charades-STA and ActivityNet datasets, and experimental results show that TSP-PRL achieves competitive performance over existing state-of-the-art methods.

Rule-Guided Compositional Representation Learning on Knowledge Graphs

Representation learning on a knowledge graph (KG) is to embed entities and relations of a KG into low-dimensional continuous vector spaces. Early KG embedding methods only pay attention to structured information encoded in triples, which would cause limited performance due to the structure sparseness of KGs. Some recent attempts consider paths information to expand the structure of KGs but lack explainability in the process of obtaining the path representations. In this paper, we propose a novel Rule and Path-based Joint Embedding (RPJE) scheme, which takes full advantage of the explainability and accuracy of logic rules, the generalization of KG embedding as well as the supplementary semantic structure of paths. Specifically, logic rules of different lengths (the number of relations in rule body) in the form of Horn clauses are first mined from the KG and elaborately encoded for representation learning. Then, the rules of length 2 are applied to compose paths accurately while the rules of length 1 are explicitly employed to create semantic associations among relations and constrain relation embeddings. Besides, the confidence level of each rule is also considered in optimization to guarantee the availability of applying the rule to representation learning. Extensive experimental results illustrate that RPJE outperforms other state-of-the-art baselines on KG completion task, which also demonstrate the superiority of utilizing logic rules as well as paths for improving the accuracy and explainability of representation learning.

PSGAN: Pose and Expression Robust Spatial-Aware GAN for Customizable Makeup Transfer

In this paper, we address the makeup transfer task, which aims to transfer the makeup from a reference image to a source image. Existing methods have achieved promising progress in constrained scenarios, but transferring between images with large pose and expression differences is still challenging. Besides, they cannot realize customizable transfer that allows a controllable shade of makeup or specifies the part to transfer, which limits their applications. To address these issues, we propose Pose and expression robust Spatial-aware GAN (PSGAN). It first utilizes Makeup Distill Network to disentangle the makeup of the reference image as two spatial-aware makeup matrices. Then, Attentive Makeup Morphing module is introduced to specify how the makeup of a pixel in the source image is morphed from the reference image. With the makeup matrices and the source image, Makeup Apply Network is used to perform makeup transfer. Our PSGAN not only achieves state-of-the-art results even when large pose and expression differences exist but also is able to perform partial and shade-controllable makeup transfer. We also collected a dataset containing facial images with various poses and expressions for evaluations.

RGB-Infrared Cross-Modality Person Re-Identification via Joint Pixel and Feature Alignment

RGB-Infrared (IR) person re-identification is an important and challenging task due to large cross-modality variations between RGB and IR images. Most conventional approaches aim to bridge the cross-modality gap with feature alignment by feature representation learning. Different from existing methods, in this paper, we propose a novel and end-to-end Alignment Generative Adversarial Network (AlignGAN) for the RGB-IR RE-ID task. The proposed model enjoys several merits. First, it can exploit pixel alignment and feature alignment jointly. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to model the two alignment strategies jointly for the RGB-IR RE-ID problem. Second, the proposed model consists of a pixel generator, a feature generator, and a joint discriminator. By playing a min-max game among the three components, our model is able to not only alleviate the cross-modality and intra-modality variations but also learn identity-consistent features. Extensive experimental results on two standard benchmarks demonstrate that the proposed model performs favorably against state-of-the-art methods. Especially, on SYSU-MM01 dataset, our model can achieve an absolute gain of 15.4% and 12.9% in terms of Rank-1 and mAP.

UGAN: Untraceable GAN for Multi-Domain Face Translation

The multi-domain image-to-image translation is a challenging task where the goal is to translate an image into multiple different domains. The target-only characteristics are desired for translated images, while the source-only characteristics should be erased. However, recent methods often suffer from retaining the characteristics of the source domain, which are incompatible with the target domain. To address this issue, we propose a method called Untraceable GAN, which has a novel source classifier to differentiate which domain an image is translated from, and determines whether the translated image still retains the characteristics of the source domain. Furthermore, we take the prototype of the target domain as the guidance for the translator to effectively synthesize the target-only characteristics. The translator is learned to synthesize the target-only characteristics and make the source domain untraceable for the discriminator, so that the source-only characteristics are erased. Finally, extensive experiments on three face editing tasks, including face aging, makeup, and expression editing, show that the proposed UGAN can produce superior results over the state-of-the-art models. The source code will be released.

Open Category Detection with PAC Guarantees

Open category detection is the problem of detecting "alien" test instances that belong to categories or classes that were not present in the training data. In many applications, reliably detecting such aliens is central to ensuring the safety and accuracy of test set predictions. Unfortunately, there are no algorithms that provide theoretical guarantees on their ability to detect aliens under general assumptions. Further, while there are algorithms for open category detection, there are few empirical results that directly report alien detection rates. Thus, there are significant theoretical and empirical gaps in our understanding of open category detection. In this paper, we take a step toward addressing this gap by studying a simple, but practically-relevant variant of open category detection. In our setting, we are provided with a "clean" training set that contains only the target categories of interest and an unlabeled "contaminated" training set that contains a fraction $α$ of alien examples. Under the assumption that we know an upper bound on $α$, we develop an algorithm with PAC-style guarantees on the alien detection rate, while aiming to minimize false alarms. Empirical results on synthetic and standard benchmark datasets demonstrate the regimes in which the algorithm can be effective and provide a baseline for further advancements.

Ensemble Soft-Margin Softmax Loss for Image Classification

Softmax loss is arguably one of the most popular losses to train CNN models for image classification. However, recent works have exposed its limitation on feature discriminability. This paper casts a new viewpoint on the weakness of softmax loss. On the one hand, the CNN features learned using the softmax loss are often inadequately discriminative. We hence introduce a soft-margin softmax function to explicitly encourage the discrimination between different classes. On the other hand, the learned classifier of softmax loss is weak. We propose to assemble multiple these weak classifiers to a strong one, inspired by the recognition that the diversity among weak classifiers is critical to a good ensemble. To achieve the diversity, we adopt the Hilbert-Schmidt Independence Criterion (HSIC). Considering these two aspects in one framework, we design a novel loss, named as Ensemble soft-Margin Softmax (EM-Softmax). Extensive experiments on benchmark datasets are conducted to show the superiority of our design over the baseline softmax loss and several state-of-the-art alternatives.

Face Aging with Contextual Generative Adversarial Nets

Face aging, which renders aging faces for an input face, has attracted extensive attention in the multimedia research. Recently, several conditional Generative Adversarial Nets (GANs) based methods have achieved great success. They can generate images fitting the real face distributions conditioned on each individual age group. However, these methods fail to capture the transition patterns, e.g., the gradual shape and texture changes between adjacent age groups. In this paper, we propose a novel Contextual Generative Adversarial Nets (C-GANs) to specifically take it into consideration. The C-GANs consists of a conditional transformation network and two discriminative networks. The conditional transformation network imitates the aging procedure with several specially designed residual blocks. The age discriminative network guides the synthesized face to fit the real conditional distribution. The transition pattern discriminative network is novel, aiming to distinguish the real transition patterns with the fake ones. It serves as an extra regularization term for the conditional transformation network, ensuring the generated image pairs to fit the corresponding real transition pattern distribution. Experimental results demonstrate the proposed framework produces appealing results by comparing with the state-of-the-art and ground truth. We also observe performance gain for cross-age face verification.

Cross-domain Human Parsing via Adversarial Feature and Label Adaptation

Human parsing has been extensively studied recently due to its wide applications in many important scenarios. Mainstream fashion parsing models focus on parsing the high-resolution and clean images. However, directly applying the parsers trained on benchmarks to a particular application scenario in the wild, e.g., a canteen, airport or workplace, often gives non-satisfactory performance due to domain shift. In this paper, we explore a new and challenging cross-domain human parsing problem: taking the benchmark dataset with extensive pixel-wise labeling as the source domain, how to obtain a satisfactory parser on a new target domain without requiring any additional manual labeling? To this end, we propose a novel and efficient cross-domain human parsing model to bridge the cross-domain differences in terms of visual appearance and environment conditions and fully exploit commonalities across domains. Our proposed model explicitly learns a feature compensation network, which is specialized for mitigating the cross-domain differences. A discriminative feature adversarial network is introduced to supervise the feature compensation to effectively reduce the discrepancy between feature distributions of two domains. Besides, our model also introduces a structured label adversarial network to guide the parsing results of the target domain to follow the high-order relationships of the structured labels shared across domains. The proposed framework is end-to-end trainable, practical and scalable in real applications. Extensive experiments are conducted where LIP dataset is the source domain and 4 different datasets including surveillance videos, movies and runway shows are evaluated as target domains. The results consistently confirm data efficiency and performance advantages of the proposed method for the cross-domain human parsing problem.

Fast Deep Matting for Portrait Animation on Mobile Phone

Image matting plays an important role in image and video editing. However, the formulation of image matting is inherently ill-posed. Traditional methods usually employ interaction to deal with the image matting problem with trimaps and strokes, and cannot run on the mobile phone in real-time. In this paper, we propose a real-time automatic deep matting approach for mobile devices. By leveraging the densely connected blocks and the dilated convolution, a light full convolutional network is designed to predict a coarse binary mask for portrait images. And a feathering block, which is edge-preserving and matting adaptive, is further developed to learn the guided filter and transform the binary mask into alpha matte. Finally, an automatic portrait animation system based on fast deep matting is built on mobile devices, which does not need any interaction and can realize real-time matting with 15 fps. The experiments show that the proposed approach achieves comparable results with the state-of-the-art matting solvers.

Surveillance Video Parsing with Single Frame Supervision

Surveillance video parsing, which segments the video frames into several labels, e.g., face, pants, left-leg, has wide applications. However,pixel-wisely annotating all frames is tedious and inefficient. In this paper, we develop a Single frame Video Parsing (SVP) method which requires only one labeled frame per video in training stage. To parse one particular frame, the video segment preceding the frame is jointly considered. SVP (1) roughly parses the frames within the video segment, (2) estimates the optical flow between frames and (3) fuses the rough parsing results warped by optical flow to produce the refined parsing result. The three components of SVP, namely frame parsing, optical flow estimation and temporal fusion are integrated in an end-to-end manner. Experimental results on two surveillance video datasets show the superiority of SVP over state-of-the-arts.

Makeup like a superstar: Deep Localized Makeup Transfer Network

In this paper, we propose a novel Deep Localized Makeup Transfer Network to automatically recommend the most suitable makeup for a female and synthesis the makeup on her face. Given a before-makeup face, her most suitable makeup is determined automatically. Then, both the beforemakeup and the reference faces are fed into the proposed Deep Transfer Network to generate the after-makeup face. Our end-to-end makeup transfer network have several nice properties including: (1) with complete functions: including foundation, lip gloss, and eye shadow transfer; (2) cosmetic specific: different cosmetics are transferred in different manners; (3) localized: different cosmetics are applied on different facial regions; (4) producing naturally looking results without obvious artifacts; (5) controllable makeup lightness: various results from light makeup to heavy makeup can be generated. Qualitative and quantitative experiments show that our network performs much better than the methods of [Guo and Sim, 2009] and two variants of NerualStyle [Gatys et al., 2015a].

Computational Baby Learning

Intuitive observations show that a baby may inherently possess the capability of recognizing a new visual concept (e.g., chair, dog) by learning from only very few positive instances taught by parent(s) or others, and this recognition capability can be gradually further improved by exploring and/or interacting with the real instances in the physical world. Inspired by these observations, we propose a computational model for slightly-supervised object detection, based on prior knowledge modelling, exemplar learning and learning with video contexts. The prior knowledge is modeled with a pre-trained Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). When very few instances of a new concept are given, an initial concept detector is built by exemplar learning over the deep features from the pre-trained CNN. Simulating the baby's interaction with physical world, the well-designed tracking solution is then used to discover more diverse instances from the massive online unlabeled videos. Once a positive instance is detected/identified with high score in each video, more variable instances possibly from different view-angles and/or different distances are tracked and accumulated. Then the concept detector can be fine-tuned based on these new instances. This process can be repeated again and again till we obtain a very mature concept detector. Extensive experiments on Pascal VOC-07/10/12 object detection datasets well demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework. It can beat the state-of-the-art full-training based performances by learning from very few samples for each object category, along with about 20,000 unlabeled videos.
