Ultrafast optically induced magnetic state transition in 2D antiferromagnets

Manipulating spin in antiferromagnetic (AFM) materials has great potential in AFM opto-spintronics. Laser pulses can induce a transient ferromagnetic (FM) state in AFM metallic systems, but have never been proven in two-dimensional (2D) AFM semiconductors and related van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures. Here, using 2D vdW heterostructures of FM MnS2 and AFM MXenes as prototypes, we investigated optically induced interlayer spin transfer dynamics based on the real-time time-dependent density functional theory (rt-TDDFT). We observed that laser pulses induce significant spin injection and the interfacial atom-mediated spin transfer from MnS2 to Cr2CCl2. In particular, we first demonstrated the transient FM state in semiconducting AFM/FM heterostructures during photoexcited processes. Because the proximity magnetism breaks the magnetic symmetry of Cr2CCl2 in heterostructures. Our results provide the microscopic understanding for optically controlled interlayer spin dynamics in 2D magnetic heterostructures and open a new way to manipulate magnetic orders in ultrafast opto-spintronics.

Nanodiamond grain boundaries and lattice expansion drive Silicon vacancy emission heterogeneity

Silicon-vacancy (SiV$^-$) centers in diamond are promising candidates as sources of single-photons in quantum networks due to their minimal phonon coupling and narrow optical linewidths. Correlating SiV$^-$ emission with the defect's atomic-scale structure is important for controlling and optimizing quantum emission, but remains an outstanding challenge. Here, we use cathodoluminescence imaging in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) to elucidate the structural sources of non-ideality in the SiV$^-$ emission from nanodiamonds with sub-nanometer-scale resolution. We show that different crystalline domains of a nanodiamond exhibit distinct zero-phonon line (ZPL) energies and differences in brightness, while near-surface SiV$^-$ emitters remain bright. We correlate these changes with local lattice expansion using 4D STEM and diffraction, and show that associated blue shifts from the ZPL are due to defect density heterogeneity, while red shifts are due to lattice distortions.

United adversarial learning for liver tumor segmentation and detection of multi-modality non-contrast MRI

Simultaneous segmentation and detection of liver tumors (hemangioma and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)) by using multi-modality non-contrast magnetic resonance imaging (NCMRI) are crucial for the clinical diagnosis. However, it is still a challenging task due to: (1) the HCC information on NCMRI is invisible or insufficient makes extraction of liver tumors feature difficult; (2) diverse imaging characteristics in multi-modality NCMRI causes feature fusion and selection difficult; (3) no specific information between hemangioma and HCC on NCMRI cause liver tumors detection difficult. In this study, we propose a united adversarial learning framework (UAL) for simultaneous liver tumors segmentation and detection using multi-modality NCMRI. The UAL first utilizes a multi-view aware encoder to extract multi-modality NCMRI information for liver tumor segmentation and detection. In this encoder, a novel edge dissimilarity feature pyramid module is designed to facilitate the complementary multi-modality feature extraction. Second, the newly designed fusion and selection channel is used to fuse the multi-modality feature and make the decision of the feature selection. Then, the proposed mechanism of coordinate sharing with padding integrates the multi-task of segmentation and detection so that it enables multi-task to perform united adversarial learning in one discriminator. Lastly, an innovative multi-phase radiomics guided discriminator exploits the clear and specific tumor information to improve the multi-task performance via the adversarial learning strategy. The UAL is validated in corresponding multi-modality NCMRI (i.e. T1FS pre-contrast MRI, T2FS MRI, and DWI) and three phases contrast-enhanced MRI of 255 clinical subjects. The experiments show that UAL has great potential in the clinical diagnosis of liver tumors.

Milli-Hertz Gravitational Wave Background Produced by Quasi-Periodic Eruptions

Extreme-mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs) are important targets for future space-borne gravitational-wave (GW) detectors, such as the Laser Interferometer Sapce Antenna (LISA). Recent works suggest that EMRI may reside in a population of newly discovered X-ray transients called "quasi-periodic eruptions" (QPEs). Here we follow this scenario and investigate the detectability of the five recently discovered QPEs by LISA. We consider two specific models in which the QPEs are made of either stellar-mass objects moving on circular orbits around massive black holes (MBHs) or white dwarfs (WDs) on eccentric orbits around MBHs. We find that in either case each QPE is too weak to be resolvable by LISA. However, if QPEs are made of eccentric WD-MBH binaries, they radiate GWs in a wide range of frequencies. The broad spectra overlap to form a background which, between $0.003-0.02$ Hz, exceeds the background known to exist due to other types of sources. Presence of this GW background in the LISA band could impact the future search for the seed black holes at high redshift as well as the stellar-mass binary black holes in the local universe.

Dialogue Inspectional Summarization with Factual Inconsistency Awareness

Dialogue summarization has been extensively studied and applied, where the prior works mainly focused on exploring superior model structures to align the input dialogue and the output summary. However, for professional dialogues (e.g., legal debate and medical diagnosis), semantic/statistical alignment can hardly fill the logical/factual gap between input dialogue discourse and summary output with external knowledge. In this paper, we mainly investigate the factual inconsistency problem for Dialogue Inspectional Summarization (DIS) under non-pretraining and pretraining settings. An innovative end-to-end dialogue summary generation framework is proposed with two auxiliary tasks: Expectant Factual Aspect Regularization (EFAR) and Missing Factual Entity Discrimination (MFED). Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed model can generate a more readable summary with accurate coverage of factual aspects as well as informing the user with potential missing facts detected from the input dialogue for further human intervention.

En route to nanoscopic quantum optical imaging: counting emitters with photon-number-resolving detectors

Fundamental understanding of biological pathways requires minimally invasive nanoscopic optical resolution imaging. Many approaches to high-resolution imaging rely on localization of single emitters, such as fluorescent molecule or quantum dot. Exact determination of the number of such emitters in an imaging volume is essential for a number of applications; however, in a commonly employed intensity-based microscopy it is not possible to distinguish individual emitters without initial knowledge of system parameters. Here we explore how quantum measurements of the emitted photons using photon number resolving detectors can be used to address this challenging task. In the proposed new approach, the problem of counting emitters reduces to the task of determining differences between the emitted photons and the Poisson limit. We show that quantum measurements of the number of photons emitted from an ensemble of emitters enable the determination of both the number of emitters and the probability of emission. This method can be applied for any type of emitters, including Raman and infrared emitters, which makes it a truly universal way to achieve super-resolution optical imaging. The scaling laws of this new approach are presented by the Cramer-Rao Lower Bounds and define the extent this technique can be used for quantum optical imaging with nanoscopic resolution.

CPNet: Cycle Prototype Network for Weakly-supervised 3D Renal Compartments Segmentation on CT Images

Renal compartment segmentation on CT images targets on extracting the 3D structure of renal compartments from abdominal CTA images and is of great significance to the diagnosis and treatment for kidney diseases. However, due to the unclear compartment boundary, thin compartment structure and large anatomy variation of 3D kidney CT images, deep-learning based renal compartment segmentation is a challenging task. We propose a novel weakly supervised learning framework, Cycle Prototype Network, for 3D renal compartment segmentation. It has three innovations: 1) A Cycle Prototype Learning (CPL) is proposed to learn consistency for generalization. It learns from pseudo labels through the forward process and learns consistency regularization through the reverse process. The two processes make the model robust to noise and label-efficient. 2) We propose a Bayes Weakly Supervised Module (BWSM) based on cross-period prior knowledge. It learns prior knowledge from cross-period unlabeled data and perform error correction automatically, thus generates accurate pseudo labels. 3) We present a Fine Decoding Feature Extractor (FDFE) for fine-grained feature extraction. It combines global morphology information and local detail information to obtain feature maps with sharp detail, so the model will achieve fine segmentation on thin structures. Our model achieves Dice of 79.1% and 78.7% with only four labeled images, achieving a significant improvement by about 20% than typical prototype model PANet.

Optimal Resource Allocation for Serverless Queries

Optimizing resource allocation for analytical workloads is vital for reducing costs of cloud-data services. At the same time, it is incredibly hard for users to allocate resources per query in serverless processing systems, and they frequently misallocate by orders of magnitude. Unfortunately, prior work focused on predicting peak allocation while ignoring aggressive trade-offs between resource allocation and run-time. Additionally, these methods fail to predict allocation for queries that have not been observed in the past. In this paper, we tackle both these problems. We introduce a system for optimal resource allocation that can predict performance with aggressive trade-offs, for both new and past observed queries. We introduce the notion of a performance characteristic curve (PCC) as a parameterized representation that can compactly capture the relationship between resources and performance. To tackle training data sparsity, we introduce a novel data augmentation technique to efficiently synthesize the entire PCC using a single run of the query. Lastly, we demonstrate the advantages of a constrained loss function coupled with GNNs, over traditional ML methods, for capturing the domain specific behavior through an extensive experimental evaluation over SCOPE big data workloads at Microsoft.

A catalog of early-type Hα emission line stars and 58 newly confirmed Herbig Ae/Bes from LAMOST DR7

We derive a catalog of early-type emission-line stars including 30,048 spectra of 25,886 stars from LAMOST DR7, in which 3,922 have Simbad records. The sample is obtained using K-Nearest Neighbor and Random Forest methods and visually inspected. The spectra are classified into 3 morphological types (10 subtypes) based on H$α$ emission line profiles. Some spectra contaminated by nebula emission lines such as from HII regions are flagged in the catalog. We also provide a specific sub-catalog of 101 stars with the stellar wind by calculating stellar wind or accretion flow velocities based on P Cygni or inverse P Cygni profiles, in which 74\% of them having velocities below 400km/s. More important, with two color-color diagrams (H-K, K- W1) and (H-K, J-H) of a collection of known Herbig Ae/Be stars (HAeBes) and classical Ae/Be stars (CAeBes), we propose an updated criterion to separate HAeBes from CAeBes. By the criterion, we select 201 HAeBes candidates and 5,547 CAeBes candidates from the sample. We confirmed 66 of the 201 HAeBes by using both WISE images and LAMOST spectra and present a specific HAeBe sub-catalog, in which 58 are newly identified. In addition, the WISE colors (W1-W2, W1- W3, and W1-W4) show the distribution consistency between our confirmed HAeBes and that of the known HAeBes. Most of the 66 confirmed HAeBes locate in the lower edge of the main sequence of hot end in the HR diagram, while the distances of about 77\% exceed 1Kpc, which enlarges the number of far distant known HAeBes.

Zeckendorf expansion, Dirichlet series and infinite series involving the infinite Fibonacci word

Let $β=\frac{1+\sqrt{5}}{2}$, $(a_n)_{n \in \mathbb{N}^+}$ be a non-uniform morphic sequence involving the infinite Fibonacci word and $(δ(n))_{n \in \mathbb{N}^+}$ be a positive sequence such that for all positive integers $n$, $δ(n)=\frac{1}{\sqrt{5}}\sum_{j \geq 0}ε_jβ^{j+2}$ if the unique Zeckendorf expansion of $n$ is $n=\sum_{j \geq 0}ε_jF_{j+2}$ with Fibonacci numbers $F_0,F_1,F_2...$. We define and study some Dirichlet series in the form of $\sum_{n\geq 1}\frac{a_n}{(δ(n))^s}$ and relations between them. Moreover, we compute the values of some infinite series involving the infinite Fibonacci word.

Information Avoidance and Overvaluation in Sequential Decision Making under Epistemic Constraints

Decision makers involved in the management of civil assets and systems usually take actions under constraints imposed by societal regulations. Some of these constraints are related to epistemic quantities, as the probability of failure events and the corresponding risks. Sensors and inspectors can provide useful information supporting the control process (e.g. the maintenance process of an asset), and decisions about collecting this information should rely on an analysis of its cost and value. When societal regulations encode an economic perspective that is not aligned with that of the decision makers, the Value of Information (VoI) can be negative (i.e., information sometimes hurts), and almost irrelevant information can even have a significant value (either positive or negative), for agents acting under these epistemic constraints. We refer to these phenomena as Information Avoidance (IA) and Information OverValuation (IOV). In this paper, we illustrate how to assess VoI in sequential decision making under epistemic constraints (as those imposed by societal regulations), by modeling a Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes (POMDP) and evaluating non optimal policies via Finite State Controllers (FSCs). We focus on the value of collecting information at current time, and on that of collecting sequential information, we illustrate how these values are related and we discuss how IA and IOV can occur in those settings.

EnMcGAN: Adversarial Ensemble Learning for 3D Complete Renal Structures Segmentation

3D complete renal structures(CRS) segmentation targets on segmenting the kidneys, tumors, renal arteries and veins in one inference. Once successful, it will provide preoperative plans and intraoperative guidance for laparoscopic partial nephrectomy(LPN), playing a key role in the renal cancer treatment. However, no success has been reported in 3D CRS segmentation due to the complex shapes of renal structures, low contrast and large anatomical variation. In this study, we utilize the adversarial ensemble learning and propose Ensemble Multi-condition GAN(EnMcGAN) for 3D CRS segmentation for the first time. Its contribution is three-fold. 1)Inspired by windowing, we propose the multi-windowing committee which divides CTA image into multiple narrow windows with different window centers and widths enhancing the contrast for salient boundaries and soft tissues. And then, it builds an ensemble segmentation model on these narrow windows to fuse the segmentation superiorities and improve whole segmentation quality. 2)We propose the multi-condition GAN which equips the segmentation model with multiple discriminators to encourage the segmented structures meeting their real shape conditions, thus improving the shape feature extraction ability. 3)We propose the adversarial weighted ensemble module which uses the trained discriminators to evaluate the quality of segmented structures, and normalizes these evaluation scores for the ensemble weights directed at the input image, thus enhancing the ensemble results. 122 patients are enrolled in this study and the mean Dice coefficient of the renal structures achieves 84.6%. Extensive experiments with promising results on renal structures reveal powerful segmentation accuracy and great clinical significance in renal cancer treatment.

PAC Confidence Predictions for Deep Neural Network Classifiers

A key challenge for deploying deep neural networks (DNNs) in safety critical settings is the need to provide rigorous ways to quantify their uncertainty. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm for constructing predicted classification confidences for DNNs that comes with provable correctness guarantees. Our approach uses Clopper-Pearson confidence intervals for the Binomial distribution in conjunction with the histogram binning approach to calibrated prediction. In addition, we demonstrate how our predicted confidences can be used to enable downstream guarantees in two settings: (i) fast DNN inference, where we demonstrate how to compose a fast but inaccurate DNN with an accurate but slow DNN in a rigorous way to improve performance without sacrificing accuracy, and (ii) safe planning, where we guarantee safety when using a DNN to predict whether a given action is safe based on visual observations. In our experiments, we demonstrate that our approach can be used to provide guarantees for state-of-the-art DNNs.

Doping isolated one-dimensional antiferro-magnetic semiconductor Vanadium tetrasulfide ($VS_4$) nanowires with carriers induces half-metallicity

Quasi one-dimensional (1D) vanadium tetrasulfide ($VS_4$) nanowires (NWs) are synthetic semiconductors which combine with each other through Van der Waals interactions to form bulk phases. However, the properties of these individual nanowires remain unknown. Nevertheless, our calculations of their stability indicate that $VS_4$) NWs can be separated from their bulk structures. Accordingly, we theoretically investigated the geometrical, electronic, and magnetic properties of bulk phase and isolated $VS_4$ NWs. Our results indicate that both bulk phase and isolated $VS_4$ NWs are semiconductors with band gaps of 2.24 and 2.64 eV, respectively, and that they prefer the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state based on DFT calculations. These calculations also suggested that isolated $VS_4$ NWs show half-metallic antiferromagnetism upon electron and hole doping because carrier doping splits the spin degeneracy to induce local spin polarisation. As a result, spin polarisation currents in isolated $VS_4$ NWs can be manipulated with locally applied gate voltage. Therefore, these 1D AFM materials have a high potential for advancing both fundamental research and spintronic applications because they are more resistant to magnetic perturbation than their 1D ferromagnetic counterparts.

Controllable non-reciprocal transmission of single photon in Mobius structure

We propose a controllable non-reciprocal transmission model. The model consists of a Mobius ring, which is connected with two one-dimensional semi-infinite chains, and with a two-level atom located inside one of the cavities of the Mobius ring. We use the method of Green function to study the transmittance of a single photon through the model. The results show that the non-reciprocal transmission can be achieved in this model and the two-level atom can behave as a quantum switch for the non-reciprocal transport of the single photon. This controllable non-reciprocal transmission model may inspire new quantum non-reciprocal devices.

Measuring black hole masses from tidal disruption events and testing the $M_{\rm BH}-σ_*$ relation

Liu and collaborators recently proposed an elliptical accretion disk model for tidal disruption events (TDEs). They showed that the accretion disks of optical/UV TDEs are large and highly eccentric and suggested that the broad optical emission lines with complex and diverse profiles originate in the cool eccentric accretion disk of random inclination and orientation. In this paper, we calculate the radiation efficiency of the elliptical accretion disk and investigate the implications for the observations of TDEs. We compile observational data for the peak bolometric luminosity and total radiation energy after peak brightness of 18 TDE sources and compare these data to the predictions from the elliptical accretion disk model. Our results show that the observations are consistent with the theoretical predictions and that the majority of the orbital energy of the stellar debris is advected into the black hole (BH) without being converted into radiation. Furthermore, we derive the masses of the disrupted stars and the masses of the BHs of the TDEs. The BH masses obtained in this paper are also consistent with those calculated with the $M_{\rm BH} - σ_*$ relation. Our results provide an effective method for measuring the masses of BHs in large numbers of TDEs to be discovered in ongoing and next-generation sky surveys, regardless of whether the BHs are located at the centers of galactic nuclei or wander in disks and halos.

Direct Estimation of Spinal Cobb Angles by Structured Multi-Output Regression

The Cobb angle that quantitatively evaluates the spinal curvature plays an important role in the scoliosis diagnosis and treatment. Conventional measurement of these angles suffers from huge variability and low reliability due to intensive manual intervention. However, since there exist high ambiguity and variability around boundaries of vertebrae, it is challenging to obtain Cobb angles automatically. In this paper, we formulate the estimation of the Cobb angles from spinal X-rays as a multi-output regression task. We propose structured support vector regression (S^2VR) to jointly estimate Cobb angles and landmarks of the spine in X-rays in one single framework. The proposed S^2VR can faithfully handle the nonlinear relationship between input images and quantitative outputs, while explicitly capturing the intrinsic correlation of outputs. We introduce the manifold regularization to exploit the geometry of the output space. We propose learning the kernel in S2VR by kernel target alignment to enhance its discriminative ability. The proposed method is evaluated on the spinal X-rays dataset of 439 scoliosis subjects, which achieves the inspiring correlation coefficient of 92.76% with ground truth obtained manually by human experts and outperforms two baseline methods. Our method achieves the direct estimation of Cobb angles with high accuracy, which indicates its great potential in clinical use.

X-ray flares from the stellar tidal disruption by a candidate supermassive black hole binary

Optical transient surveys have led to the discovery of dozens of stellar tidal disruption events (TDEs) by massive black hole in the centers of galaxies. Despite extensive searches, X-ray follow-up observations have produced no or only weak X-ray detections in most of them. Here we report the discovery of delayed X-ray brightening around 140 days after the optical outburst in the TDE OGLE16aaa, followed by several flux dips during the decay phase. These properties are unusual for standard TDEs and could be explained by the presence of supermassive black hole binary or patchy obscuration. In either scenario, the X-rays can be produced promptly after the disruption but are blocked in the early phase, possibly by a radiation-dominated ejecta which leads to the bulk of optical and ultraviolet emission. Our findings imply that the reprocessing is important in the TDE early evolution, and X-ray observations are promising in revealing supermassive black hole binaries.
