Momentum distribution and tunneling density of states of one-dimensional Fermonic SU(N) Hubbard model

We study the one-dimensional Fermionic Hubbard model with SU(N) spin symmetry in the incommensurate filling case. The basic properties of Green's function, momentum distribution and tunneling density of states of the system at low temperature are studied in the frame work of Luttinger liquid theory combined with Bethe Ansatz solutions for arbitrary interaction. In the strong interacting case, the system enters the spin-incoherent regime at intermediate temperature Espin < T < Ec and we obtain the Green's function and tunneling density of states by generalizing the path integral approach for the SU(2) case to the SU(N) case in this regime. The theoretical results we obtained agree qualitatively with the experiments on the one-dimensional alkaline earth atomic system with SU(N) spin symmetry. The similarities and difference between the one-dimensional SU(N) Fermionic Hubbard system at large N and the one-dimensional spinless Bosonic system are also investigated.

Tuning topological orders by a conical magnetic field in the Kitaev model

We show that a conical magnetic field ${\bf H}=(1,1,1)H$ can be used to tune the topological order and hence anyon excitations of the $\mathrm{Z_2}$ quantum spin liquid in the isotropic antiferromagnetic Kitaev model. A novel topological order, featured with Chern number $C=4$ and Abelian anyon excitations, is induced in a narrow range of intermediate fields $H_{c1}\leq H\leq H_{c2}$. On the other hand, the $C=1$ Ising-topological order with non-Abelian anyon excitations, is previously known to be present at small fields, and interestingly, is found here to survive up to $H_{c1}$, and revive above $H_{c2}$, until the system becomes trivial above a higher field $H_{c3}$. The results are obtained by devoloping and applying a $\mathrm{Z_2}$ mean field theory, that works at zero as well as finite fields, and the associated variational quantum Monte Carlo.

Aharonov-Bohm interference of fractional quantum Hall edge modes

We demonstrate operation of a small Fabry-Perot interferometer in which highly coherent Aharonov-Bohm oscillations are observed in the integer and fractional quantum Hall regimes. Using a novel heterostructure design, Coulomb effects are drastically suppressed. Coherency of edge mode interference is characterized by the energy scale for thermal damping, ${T_0=206}mK$ at $ν=1$. Selective backscattering of edge modes originating in the ${N=0,1,2}$ Landau levels allows for independent determination of inner and outer edge mode velocities. Clear Aharonov-Bohm oscillations are observed at fractional filling factors $ν=2/3$ and $ν=1/3$. Our device architecture provides a platform for measurement of anyonic braiding statistics.

Phototransistor-like Light Controllable IoT Sensor based on Series-connected RGB LEDs

An IoT optical sensor based on the series-connected RGB LEDs is designed, which exhibits the light-controllable optical-to-electrical response like a phototransistor. The IoT sensor has the maximal AC and DC responsivities to the violet light mixed by blue and red light. Its responsivity to the blue light is programmable by the impinging red or green light. A theoretical model based on the light-dependent impedance is developed to interpret its novel optoelectronic response. Such IoT sensor can simultaneously serve as the transmitter and the receiver in the IoT optical communication network, thus significantly reduces the system complexity.

Integral Human Pose Regression

State-of-the-art human pose estimation methods are based on heat map representation. In spite of the good performance, the representation has a few issues in nature, such as not differentiable and quantization error. This work shows that a simple integral operation relates and unifies the heat map representation and joint regression, thus avoiding the above issues. It is differentiable, efficient, and compatible with any heat map based methods. Its effectiveness is convincingly validated via comprehensive ablation experiments under various settings, specifically on 3D pose estimation, for the first time.

Response and phase transition of a Kitaev spin liquid in a local magnetic field

We study the response of the Kitaev spin liquid (KSL) to a local magnetic field perpendicular to the Kitaev honeycomb lattice. The local magnetic field induces a dynamical excitation of a flux pair in the spin liquid and the system can be described by a generally particle-hole asymmetric interacting resonant level model. The dynamical excitation of the flux pair closes the flux gap in the spectrum of the spin correlation function locally for the gapless KSL even from the perturbative response to a weak magnetic field. Beyond the perturbative regime, the p-h asymmetry competes with the magnetic field and results in a rich phase diagram. Moreover, the magnetic field breaks the gauge equivalence of the ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic Kitaev couplings of the ground state and leads to very different behaviors for the two cases. The anti-ferromagnetic case experiences a first order phase transition to the polarized state during magnetization whereas the ferromagnetic case does not. This study can be generalized to the Kitaev model in a uniform magnetic field and may help understand issues in recent experiments on KSL candidates.

Intermediate gapless phase and topological phase transition of Kitaev model in a uniform magnetic field

We study the Kitaev spin liquid (KSL) in a [001] magnetic field employing the mean field theory (MFT/MF) in the Majorana fermion representation. The MF Hamiltonian of the system has the Bogoliubov de-Gennes (BdG) form of a 2D Weyl superconductor. We discover a robust gapless regime in intermediate magnetic field for both gapless and gapped AFM KSL with Jx = Jy before the system is polarized in high magnetic field. A topological phase transition (PT) connecting two gapless phases with nodal lines takes place at a critical magnetic field hc1 in this regime. While the nodal lines at hc1 is protected by the mirror symmetry with Jx = Jy and disappear at Jx 6= Jy with a gap opening near the critical field, the nodal points at E = 0 can exist at intermediate fields even without mirror symmetry. We reveal that the phase evolution of the KSL in the magnetic field is driven by the competition between the magnetic field and the particle-hole (p-h) asymmetry of the normal state of the BdG Hamiltonian, which results in the robust intermediate gapless phase for AFM KSL. For FM KSL, there is no intermediate PT before polarization. The above phase diagrams are confirmed by dynamical MFT (DMFT) results.

Pseudo Mask Augmented Object Detection

In this work, we present a novel and effective framework to facilitate object detection with the instance-level segmentation information that is only supervised by bounding box annotation. Starting from the joint object detection and instance segmentation network, we propose to recursively estimate the pseudo ground-truth object masks from the instance-level object segmentation network training, and then enhance the detection network with top-down segmentation feedbacks. The pseudo ground truth mask and network parameters are optimized alternatively to mutually benefit each other. To obtain the promising pseudo masks in each iteration, we embed a graphical inference that incorporates the low-level image appearance consistency and the bounding box annotations to refine the segmentation masks predicted by the segmentation network. Our approach progressively improves the object detection performance by incorporating the detailed pixel-wise information learned from the weakly-supervised segmentation network. Extensive evaluation on the detection task in PASCAL VOC 2007 and 2012 [12] verifies that the proposed approach is effective.

Compositional Human Pose Regression

Regression based methods are not performing as well as detection based methods for human pose estimation. A central problem is that the structural information in the pose is not well exploited in the previous regression methods. In this work, we propose a structure-aware regression approach. It adopts a reparameterized pose representation using bones instead of joints. It exploits the joint connection structure to define a compositional loss function that encodes the long range interactions in the pose. It is simple, effective, and general for both 2D and 3D pose estimation in a unified setting. Comprehensive evaluation validates the effectiveness of our approach. It significantly advances the state-of-the-art on Human3.6M and is competitive with state-of-the-art results on MPII.

Deep Kinematic Pose Regression

Learning articulated object pose is inherently difficult because the pose is high dimensional but has many structural constraints. Most existing work do not model such constraints and does not guarantee the geometric validity of their pose estimation, therefore requiring a post-processing to recover the correct geometry if desired, which is cumbersome and sub-optimal. In this work, we propose to directly embed a kinematic object model into the deep neutral network learning for general articulated object pose estimation. The kinematic function is defined on the appropriately parameterized object motion variables. It is differentiable and can be used in the gradient descent based optimization in network training. The prior knowledge on the object geometric model is fully exploited and the structure is guaranteed to be valid. We show convincing experiment results on a toy example and the 3D human pose estimation problem. For the latter we achieve state-of-the-art result on Human3.6M dataset.

Attribute Recognition from Adaptive Parts

Previous part-based attribute recognition approaches perform part detection and attribute recognition in separate steps. The parts are not optimized for attribute recognition and therefore could be sub-optimal. We present an end-to-end deep learning approach to overcome the limitation. It generates object parts from key points and perform attribute recognition accordingly, allowing adaptive spatial transform of the parts. Both key point estimation and attribute recognition are learnt jointly in a multi-task setting. Extensive experiments on two datasets verify the efficacy of proposed end-to-end approach.
