Experimental study of underwater explosions below a free surface: bubble dynamics and pressure wave emission

The current work experimentally studies the complex interaction between underwater explosion (UNDEX) bubbles and a free surface. We aim to reveal the dependence of the associated physics on the key factor, namely, the dimensionless detonation depth $γ$ (scaled by the maximum equivalent bubble radius). Four typical bubble behavior patterns are identified with the respective range of $γ$: (i) bubble bursting at the free surface, (ii) bubble jetting downward, (iii) neutral collapse of the bubble, and (iv) quasi-free-field motion. By comparison of the jet direction and the migration of the bubble centroid, a critical value of $γ$ is vital for ignoring the effects of the free surface on UNDEX bubbles. Good agreements are obtained between the experimental data and the unified theory for bubble dynamics by Zhang et al. Additionally, the dependence of the pressure signals in the flow field on $γ$ is investigated. The peak pressure, impulse, and energy dissipation in the UNDEX are investigated.

Rethinking Document-Level Relation Extraction: A Reality Check

Recently, numerous efforts have continued to push up performance boundaries of document-level relation extraction (DocRE) and have claimed significant progress in DocRE. In this paper, we do not aim at proposing a novel model for DocRE. Instead, we take a closer look at the field to see if these performance gains are actually true. By taking a comprehensive literature review and a thorough examination of popular DocRE datasets, we find that these performance gains are achieved upon a strong or even untenable assumption in common: all named entities are perfectly localized, normalized, and typed in advance. Next, we construct four types of entity mention attacks to examine the robustness of typical DocRE models by behavioral probing. We also have a close check on model usability in a more realistic setting. Our findings reveal that most of current DocRE models are vulnerable to entity mention attacks and difficult to be deployed in real-world end-user NLP applications. Our study calls more attentions for future research to stop simplifying problem setups, and to model DocRE in the wild rather than in an unrealistic Utopian world.

Patch-level Routing in Mixture-of-Experts is Provably Sample-efficient for Convolutional Neural Networks

In deep learning, mixture-of-experts (MoE) activates one or few experts (sub-networks) on a per-sample or per-token basis, resulting in significant computation reduction. The recently proposed \underline{p}atch-level routing in \underline{MoE} (pMoE) divides each input into $n$ patches (or tokens) and sends $l$ patches ($l\ll n$) to each expert through prioritized routing. pMoE has demonstrated great empirical success in reducing training and inference costs while maintaining test accuracy. However, the theoretical explanation of pMoE and the general MoE remains elusive. Focusing on a supervised classification task using a mixture of two-layer convolutional neural networks (CNNs), we show for the first time that pMoE provably reduces the required number of training samples to achieve desirable generalization (referred to as the sample complexity) by a factor in the polynomial order of $n/l$, and outperforms its single-expert counterpart of the same or even larger capacity. The advantage results from the discriminative routing property, which is justified in both theory and practice that pMoE routers can filter label-irrelevant patches and route similar class-discriminative patches to the same expert. Our experimental results on MNIST, CIFAR-10, and CelebA support our theoretical findings on pMoE's generalization and show that pMoE can avoid learning spurious correlations.

Learning Music Sequence Representation from Text Supervision

Music representation learning is notoriously difficult for its complex human-related concepts contained in the sequence of numerical signals. To excavate better MUsic SEquence Representation from labeled audio, we propose a novel text-supervision pre-training method, namely MUSER. MUSER adopts an audio-spectrum-text tri-modal contrastive learning framework, where the text input could be any form of meta-data with the help of text templates while the spectrum is derived from an audio sequence. Our experiments reveal that MUSER could be more flexibly adapted to downstream tasks compared with the current data-hungry pre-training method, and it only requires 0.056% of pre-training data to achieve the state-of-the-art performance.

Detection of Cross-Dataset Fake Audio Based on Prosodic and Pronunciation Features

Existing fake audio detection systems perform well in in-domain testing, but still face many challenges in out-of-domain testing. This is due to the mismatch between the training and test data, as well as the poor generalizability of features extracted from limited views. To address this, we propose multi-view features for fake audio detection, which aim to capture more generalized features from prosodic, pronunciation, and wav2vec dimensions. Specifically, the phoneme duration features are extracted from a pre-trained model based on a large amount of speech data. For the pronunciation features, a Conformer-based phoneme recognition model is first trained, keeping the acoustic encoder part as a deeply embedded feature extractor. Furthermore, the prosodic and pronunciation features are fused with wav2vec features based on an attention mechanism to improve the generalization of fake audio detection models. Results show that the proposed approach achieves significant performance gains in several cross-dataset experiments.

TO-Rawnet: Improving RawNet with TCN and Orthogonal Regularization for Fake Audio Detection

Current fake audio detection relies on hand-crafted features, which lose information during extraction. To overcome this, recent studies use direct feature extraction from raw audio signals. For example, RawNet is one of the representative works in end-to-end fake audio detection. However, existing work on RawNet does not optimize the parameters of the Sinc-conv during training, which limited its performance. In this paper, we propose to incorporate orthogonal convolution into RawNet, which reduces the correlation between filters when optimizing the parameters of Sinc-conv, thus improving discriminability. Additionally, we introduce temporal convolutional networks (TCN) to capture long-term dependencies in speech signals. Experiments on the ASVspoof 2019 show that the Our TO-RawNet system can relatively reduce EER by 66.09\% on logical access scenario compared with the RawNet, demonstrating its effectiveness in detecting fake audio attacks.

Wavelet-based Unsupervised Label-to-Image Translation

Semantic Image Synthesis (SIS) is a subclass of image-to-image translation where a semantic layout is used to generate a photorealistic image. State-of-the-art conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) need a huge amount of paired data to accomplish this task while generic unpaired image-to-image translation frameworks underperform in comparison, because they color-code semantic layouts and learn correspondences in appearance instead of semantic content. Starting from the assumption that a high quality generated image should be segmented back to its semantic layout, we propose a new Unsupervised paradigm for SIS (USIS) that makes use of a self-supervised segmentation loss and whole image wavelet based discrimination. Furthermore, in order to match the high-frequency distribution of real images, a novel generator architecture in the wavelet domain is proposed. We test our methodology on 3 challenging datasets and demonstrate its ability to bridge the performance gap between paired and unpaired models.

Synchrotron Radiation Dominates the Extremely Bright GRB 221009A

The brightest Gamma-ray burst, GRB 221009A, has spurred numerous theoretical investigations, with particular attention paid to the origins of ultra-high energy TeV photons during the prompt phase. However, analyzing the mechanism of radiation of photons in the $\sim$MeV range has been difficult because the high flux causes pile-up and saturation effects in most GRB detectors. In this letter, we present systematic modeling of the time-resolved spectra of the GRB using unsaturated data obtained from Fermi/GBM (precursor) and SATech-01/GECAM-C (main emission and flare). Our approach incorporates the synchrotron radiation model, which assumes an expanding emission region with relativistic speed and a global magnetic field that decays with radius, and successfully fits such a model to the observational data. Our results indicate that the spectra of the burst are fully in accordance with a synchrotron origin from relativistic electrons accelerated at a large emission radius. The lack of thermal emission in the prompt emission spectra supports a Poynting-flux-dominated jet composition.

Simple and Fast Polarization Tracking algorithm for Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution System Using Orthogonal Pilot Tone

To reduce the influence of random channel polarization variation, especially fast polarization perturbation, for continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) systems, a simple and fast polarization tracking algorithm is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The algorithm is implemented by an orthogonal pilot tone scheme, one of the pilot tones is used for estimating the polarization rotation angle, and the other one is used for compensating the polarization perturbation introduced phase noise. Meanwhile, residual effects are compensated precisely with the help of a real-valued FIR filter. In this case, the excess noise introduced by polarization perturbation is effectively suppressed. Experimental results show that the polarization scrambling rate 12.57 krad/s can be tracked by using the proposed algorithm, and a good estimated parameters performance is achieved. Compared to conventional polarization tracking algorithms such as the constant modulus algorithm (CMA), experimental results show that the polarization tracking apability of the proposed algorithm is significantly improved. Furthermore, much faster polarization tracking performance is evaluated by digital simulations, and the simulation results show that about 188.50 Mrad/s can be tracked by the proposed algorithm. Thus, our method provides effective technology for the practical application of fiber-based CV-QKD.

Room-Temperature Bound States in the Continuum Polariton Condensation

Exciton-polaritons resulting from the strong exciton-photon interaction stimulate the development of novel coherent light sources with low threshold, long range spatial, and temporal coherence to circumvent the ever increasing energy demands of optical communications. Polaritons from bound states in the continuum (BICs) are promising for Bose-Einstein condensation owing to their infinite quality factors that enlarge photon lifetimes and benefit polariton accumulations. However, BIC polariton condensation remains limited to cryogenic temperatures ascribed to the small exciton binding energies of conventional material platforms. Herein, we demonstrated a room-temperature BIC polaritonic platform based on halide perovskite air-hole photonic crystals, profiting from the non-radiative BIC states and stable excitons of cesium lead bromide. BIC polariton condensation was achieved near the dispersion minimum that generates directional vortex beam emission with long-range coherence. Our work provides a significant basis for the applications of polariton condensates for integrated photonic and topological circuits.

Practical Continuous-variable Quantum Key Distribution with Feasible Optimization Parameters

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) offers an approach to achieve a potential high secret key rate (SKR) in metropolitan areas. There are several challenges in developing a practical CV-QKD system from the laboratory to the real world. One of the most significant points is that it is really hard to adapt different practical optical fiber conditions for CV-QKD systems with unified hardware. Thus, how to improve the performance of practical CV-QKD systems in the field without modification of the hardware is very important. Here, a systematic optimization method, combining the modulation variance and error correction matrix optimization, is proposed to improve the performance of a practical CV-QKD system with a restricted capacity of postprocessing. The effect of restricted postprocessing capacity on the SKR is modeled as a nonlinear programming problem with modulation variance as an optimization parameter, and the selection of an optimal error correction matrix is studied under the same scheme. The results show that the SKR of a CV-QKD system can be improved by 24% and 200% compared with previous frequently used optimization methods theoretically with a transmission distance of 50 km. Furthermore, the experimental results verify the feasibility and robustness of the proposed method, where the achieved optimal SKR achieved practically deviates <1.6% from the theoretical optimal value. Our results pave the way to deploy high-performance CV-QKD in the real world.

Magnetic bulk photovoltaic effect as a probe of magnetic structures of $EuSn_2As_2$

The bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) is a second-order optical process in noncentrosymmetric materials that converts the light into DC currents. BPVE is classified into shift current and injection current according to the generation mechanisms, whose dependence on the polarization of light is sensitive to the spatial and time-reversal symmetry of materials. In this work, we present a comprehensive study on the BPVE response of $EuSn_2As_2$ with different magnetic structures through symmetry analysis and first-principles calculation. We demonstrate that the interlayer antiferromagnetic (AFM) $EuSn_2As_2$ of even-layer breaks the inversion symmetry and has the second-order optical responses. Moreover, the bilayer AFM $EuSn_2As_2$ not only displays distinct BPVE responses when magnetic moments align in different directions, but also shows symmetry-related responses in two phases which have mutually perpendicular in-plane magnetic moments. Due to the dependence of BPVE responses on the polarization of light and magnetic symmetry, these magnetic structures can be distinguished by the circular polarized light with well-designed experiments. Our work demonstrates the feasibility of the BPVE response as a tool to probe the magnetic structure.

Joint Edge-Model Sparse Learning is Provably Efficient for Graph Neural Networks

Due to the significant computational challenge of training large-scale graph neural networks (GNNs), various sparse learning techniques have been exploited to reduce memory and storage costs. Examples include \textit{graph sparsification} that samples a subgraph to reduce the amount of data aggregation and \textit{model sparsification} that prunes the neural network to reduce the number of trainable weights. Despite the empirical successes in reducing the training cost while maintaining the test accuracy, the theoretical generalization analysis of sparse learning for GNNs remains elusive. To the best of our knowledge, this paper provides the first theoretical characterization of joint edge-model sparse learning from the perspective of sample complexity and convergence rate in achieving zero generalization error. It proves analytically that both sampling important nodes and pruning neurons with the lowest-magnitude can reduce the sample complexity and improve convergence without compromising the test accuracy. Although the analysis is centered on two-layer GNNs with structural constraints on data, the insights are applicable to more general setups and justified by both synthetic and practical citation datasets.

In-plane anisotropy in biaxial ReS2 crystals probed by nano-optical imaging of waveguide modes

Near-field imaging has emerged as a reliable probe of the dielectric function of van der Waals crystals. In principle, analyzing the propagation patterns of subwavelength waveguide modes (WMs) allows for extraction of the full dielectric tensor. Yet previous studies have mostly been restricted to high-symmetry materials or narrowband probing. Here, we resolve in-plane anisotropic WMs in thin rhenium disulfide (ReS2) crystals across a wide range of near-infrared frequencies. By tracing the evolution of these modes as a function of crystallographic direction, polarization of the electric field and sample thickness, we have determined the anisotropic dielectric tensor including the elusive out-of-plane response. The excitonic absorption at ~1.5 eV manifests itself as a clear backbending feature in the WM dispersion and a reduction of the quality factors as fully supported by numerical calculations. Our results extend the sensitivity of near-field microscopy towards biaxial anisotropy and provide key insights into the optoelectronic properties of ReS2.

A Multifunctional Array System Based on Adjustable-Phase Antenna for Wireless Communications

In this work, an innovative method for controlling the current distribution of the radiating patch by adjusting the input phase is investigated to achieve both pattern and polarization reconfigurable characteristics for the multifunction. A compact and low-profile antenna with four fed ports is designed to implement the proposed method, which can operate linear, right-hand circular polarization (RHCP) and left-hand circular polarization (LHCP) with different beam directions in the operating band from 4.0 to 5.0 GHz. Even more, a four-by-four passive planar array is designed and fabricated based on this antenna element, which can scan the coverage of 70° with low gain fluctuation and low sidelobe with dual-polarization. Meanwhile, it can realize the wide-angle scanning capability up to 60° with low sidelobe with RHCP and LHCP. More important, the dual- and triple-beam with different directions can be obtained by the proposed array. Good agreement has been shown between measured and simulated results. Therefore, the proposed antenna is a good solution for wireless communication systems because of its simple-configuration, multifunction, and beamforming capability.

Learning and generalization of one-hidden-layer neural networks, going beyond standard Gaussian data

This paper analyzes the convergence and generalization of training a one-hidden-layer neural network when the input features follow the Gaussian mixture model consisting of a finite number of Gaussian distributions. Assuming the labels are generated from a teacher model with an unknown ground truth weight, the learning problem is to estimate the underlying teacher model by minimizing a non-convex risk function over a student neural network. With a finite number of training samples, referred to the sample complexity, the iterations are proved to converge linearly to a critical point with guaranteed generalization error. In addition, for the first time, this paper characterizes the impact of the input distributions on the sample complexity and the learning rate.

Onset of visible capillary waves from high-frequency acoustic excitation

Remarkably, the interface of a fluid droplet will produce visible capillary waves when exposed to acoustic waves. For example, a small ($\sim\! 1 μ$L) sessile droplet will oscillate at a low $\sim\!10^2$~Hz frequency when weakly driven by acoustic waves at $\sim\!10^6$~Hz frequency and beyond. We measured such a droplet's interfacial response to 6.6~MHz ultrasound to gain insight into the energy transfer mechanism that spans these vastly different timescales, using high-speed microscopic digital transmission holography, a unique method to capture three-dimensional surface dynamics at nanometer space and microsecond time resolutions. We show that low-frequency capillary waves are driven into existence via a feedback mechanism between the acoustic radiation pressure and the evolving shape of the fluid interface. The acoustic pressure is distributed in the standing wave cavity of the droplet, and as the shape of the fluid interface changes in response to the distributed pressure present on the interface, the standing wave field also changes shape, feeding back to produce changes in the acoustic radiation pressure distribution in the cavity. A physical model explicitly based upon this proposed mechanism is provided, and simulations using it were verified against direct observations of both the microscale droplet interface dynamics from holography and internal pressure distributions using microparticle image velocimetry. The pressure-interface feedback model accurately predicts the vibration amplitude threshold at which capillary waves appear, the subsequent amplitude and frequency of the capillary waves, and the distribution of the standing wave pressure field within the sessile droplet responsible for the capillary waves.

Large Exchange Bias Effect and Coverage-Dependent Interfacial Coupling in CrI3/MnBi2Te4 van der Waals Heterostructures

Igniting interface magnetic ordering of magnetic topological insulators by building a van der Waals heterostructure can help to reveal novel quantum states and design functional devices. Here, we observe an interesting exchange bias effect, indicating successful interfacial magnetic coupling, in CrI3/MnBi2Te4 ferromagnetic insulator/antiferromagnetic topological insulator (FMI/AFM-TI) heterostructure devices. The devices originally exhibit a negative exchange bias field, which decays with increasing temperature and is unaffected by the back-gate voltage. When we change the device configuration to be half-covered by CrI3, the exchange bias becomes positive with a very large exchange bias field exceeding 300 mT. Such sensitive manipulation is explained by the competition between the FM and AFM coupling at the interface of CrI3 and MnBi2Te4, pointing to coverage-dependent interfacial magnetic interactions. Our work will facilitate the development of topological and antiferromagnetic devices.
