Magnetic states of iron-based two-leg ladder tellurides

The recent discovery of superconductivity at high pressure in the two-leg ladder compounds BaFe$_2X_3$ ($X$=S, Se) started the novel field of quasi-one-dimensional iron-based superconductors. In this publication, we use Density Functional Theory (DFT) to predict that the previously barely explored ladder compound RbFe$_2$Te$_3$ should be magnetic with a CX-type arrangement involving ferromagnetic rungs and antiferromagnetic legs, at the realistic density of $n=5.5$ electrons per iron. The magnetic state similarity with BaFe$_2$S$_3$ suggests that RbFe$_2$Te$_3$ could also become superconducting under pressure. Moreover, at $n=6.0$ our DFT phase diagrams (with and without lattice tetramerization) reveal that the stable magnetic states could be either a 2$\times$2 magnetic Block-type, as for $X$=Se, or a previously never observed before CY-type state, with ferromagnetic legs and antiferromagnetic rungs. In the Te-based studies, electrons are more localized than in S, implying that the degree of electronic correlation is enhanced for the Te case.

Electronic Transport Evidence for Topological Nodal-Line Semimetals of ZrGeSe single crystals

Although the band topology of ZrGeSe has been studied via magnetic torque technique, the electronic transport behaviors related to the relativistic Fermions in ZrGeSe are still unknown. Here, we first report systematic electronic transport properties of high-quality ZrGeSe single crystals under magnetic fields up to 14 T. Resistivity plateaus of temperature dependent resistivity curves both in the presence and absence of magnetic fields as well as large, non-saturating magnetoresistance in low-temperature region were observed. By analyzing the temperature- and angular-dependent Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations and fitting it via the Lifshitz-Kosevich (LK) formula with the Berry phase being taken into account, we proved that Dirac fermions dominate the electronic transport behaviors of ZrGeSe and the presence of non-trivial Berry phase. First principles calculations demonstrate that ZrGeSe possesses Dirac bands and normal bands near Fermi surface, resulting in the observed magnetotransport phenomena. These results demonstrate that ZrGeSe is a topological nodal-line semimetal, which provides a fundamentally important platform to study the quantum physics of topological semimetals.

Type-II multiferroic Hf$_{2}$VC$_{2}$F$_{2}$ MXene monolayer with high transition temperature

Achieving multiferroic two-dimensional (2D) materials should enable numerous functionalities in nanoscale devices. Until now, however, predicted 2D multiferroics are very few and with coexisting yet only loosely coupled (type-I) ferroelectricity and magnetism. Here, a type-II multiferroic MXene Hf$_{2}$VC$_{2}$F$_{2}$ monolayer is identified, where ferroelectricity originates directly from its magnetism. The noncollinear Y-type spin order generates a polarization perpendicular to the spin helical plane. Remarkably, the multiferroic transition is estimated to occur above room temperature. Our investigation should open the door to a new branch of 2D materials for pursuit of intrinsically strong magnetoelectricity.

Giant anisotropic magnetoresistance and nonvolatile memory in canted antiferromagnet Sr2IrO4

Antiferromagnets have been generating intense interest in the spintronics community, owing to their intrinsic appealing properties like zero stray field and ultrafast spin dynamics. While the control of antiferromagnetic (AFM) orders has been realized by various means, applicably appreciated functionalities on the readout side of AFM-based devices are urgently desired. Here, we report the remarkably enhanced anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) as giant as ~ 160% in a simple resistor structure made of AFM Sr2IrO4 without auxiliary reference layer. The underlying mechanism for the giant AMR is an indispensable combination of atomic scale giant-MR-like effect and magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy, which was not accessed earlier. Furthermore, we demonstrate the bistable nonvolatile memory states that can be switched in-situ without the inconvenient heat-assisted procedure, and robustly preserved even at zero magnetic field, due to the modified interlayer coupling by 1% Ga-doping in Sr2IrO4. These findings represent a straightforward step toward the AFM spintronic devices.

Possible emergence of a skyrmion phase in ferroelectric GaMo$_4$S$_8$

Polar lacunar spinels, such as GaV$_4$S$_8$ and GaV$_4$Se$_8$, were proposed to host skyrmion phases under magnetic field. In this work, we put forward, as a candidate for Néel-type skyrmion lattice, the isostructural GaMo$_4$S$_8$, here systematically studied via both first-principles calculations and Monte Carlo simulations of model Hamiltonian. Electric polarization, driven by Jahn-Teller distortion, is predicted to arise in GaMo$_4$S$_8$, showing a comparable size but an opposite sign with respect to that evaluated in V-based counterparts and explained in terms of different electron counting arguments and resulting distortions. Interestingly, a larger spin-orbit coupling of 4d orbitals with respect to 3d orbitals in vanadium-spinels leads to stronger Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, which are beneficial to stabilize a cycloidal spin texture, as well as smaller-sized skyrmions (radius<10 nm). Furthermore, the possibly large exchange anisotropy of GaMo4S8 may lead to a ferroelectric-ferromagnetic ground state, as an alternative to the ferroelectric-skyrmionic one, calling for further experimental verification.

Oxidized silicon sulfide: stability and electronic properties of a novel two-dimensional material

Isolated oxygen impurities and fully oxidized structures of four stable two-dimensional (2D) SiS structures are investigated by {\em ab initio} density functional calculations. Binding energies of oxygen impurities for all the four 2D SiS structures are found larger than those for phosphorene, due to the lower electronegativity of Si atoms. The most stable configurations of isolated oxygen impurities for different 2D SiS structures are decided and the corresponding 2D structures with saturated oxidation (SiSO) are predicted. Among all the four fully oxidized structures, $α$-SiSO is demonstrated to be stable by phonon spectra calculations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Electronic structure calculations indicate that $α$-SiSO monolayer is semiconducting with a direct band gap of ${\approx}2.28$~eV, which can be effectively tuned by in-layer strain. The value of band gap and thermodynamic stability are found depending sensitively on the saturation level of oxygen.

Challenges in Band Alignment between Semiconducting Materials: A Case of Rutile and Anatase TiO$_2$

This topical review focuses on the recently active debate on the band alignment between two polymorphs of TiO$_2$, rutile and anatase. A summary is given to the popular methods for measurement and calculation of band alignment between materials. We point out, through examination of recently experimental and theoretical reports, that the outstanding discrepancy in the band alignment between two TiO$_2$ phases is attributed to factors that influence band alignment rather than needs a definite answer of which band alignment is right. According to an important factor, the presence of an interface, a new classification of band alignment is proposed as the coupled and intrinsic band alignments. This classification indeed reveals that the rutile/anatase interface can qualitatively change the type of their band alignment. However, further systematic information of the interface and other factors that influence band alignment will be needed to understand changes in energy bands of materials better. The results obtained from discussion of the band alignment between rutile and anatase may also work for the band alignment between other semiconductors.

Magnetoelectricity in Multiferroics: a Theoretical Perspective

The key physical property of multiferroic materials is the existence of a coupling between magnetism and polarization, i.e. magnetoelectricity. The origin and manifestations of magnetoelectricity can be very different in the available plethora of multiferroic systems, with multiple possible mechanisms hidden behind the phenomena. In this Review, we describe the fundamental physics that causes magnetoelectricity from a theoretical viewpoint. The present review will focus on the main stream physical mechanisms in both single phase multiferroics and magnetoelectric heterostructures. The most recent tendencies addressing possible new magnetoelectric mechanisms will also be briefly outlined.

Magnetic borophenes from evolutionary search

A computation methodology based on ab initio evolutionary algorithms and the spin-polarized density functional theory was developed to predict two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials. Its application to a model system borophene reveals an unexpected rich magnetism and polymorphism. A stable borophene with nonzero thickness was an antiferromagnetic (AFM) semiconductor from first-principles calculations, which can be further turned into a half metal by finite electron doping. In this borophene, the buckling and coupling among three atomic layers are not only responsible for the magnetism, but also result in an out-of-plane negative Poissons ratios under uniaxial tension, making it the first elemental material possessing auxetic and magnetic properties simultaneously.

Protective layer enhanced the stability and superconductivity of tailored antimonene bilayer

For two-dimensional superconductors, the high stability in ambient conditions is critical for experiments and applications. Few-layer antimonene can be non-degradative over a couple of months, which is superior to the akin black phosphorus. Based on the anisotropic Migdal-Eliashberg theory and maximally-localised Wannier functions, this work predicts that electron-doping and Ca-intercalation can transform $β$-Sb bilayer from a semimetal to a superconductor. However, the stability of antimonene bilayer in air trends to be decreased due to the electron doping. To overcome this drawback, two kinds of protective layers (graphene and $h$-BN) are proposed to enhance the stability. Interestingly, the superconducting transition temperature will also be enhanced to $9.6$ K, making it a promising candidate as nanoscale superconductor.

Unusual Ferroelectricity of Trans-Unitcell Ion-Displacement and Multiferroic Soliton in Sodium and Potassium Hydroxides

We show the first-principles evidence of a hitherto unreported type of ferroelectricity with ultra-long ion-displacement in sodium and potassium hydroxides. Even a small amount of proton vacancies can completely change the mode of proton-transfer from intra-unitcell to trans-unitcell, giving rise to multiferroic soliton with mobile magnetism and a tremendous polarization that can be orders of magnitude higher compared with most perovskite ferroelectrics. Their vertical polarizations of thin-film are robust against depolarizing field, rendering various designs of 2D ferroelectric field-transistors with non-destructive readout and ultra-high on/off ratio via sensing the switchable metallic/insulating state.

Proton-transfer Ferroelectricity / Multiferroicity in Rutile Oxyhydroxides

Oxyhydroxide minerals like FeOOH have been a research focus in geology for studying the Earth interior, and also in chemistry for studying oxygen electrocatalysis activity. In this paper we provide first-principles evidence of a new class of ferroelectrics or multiferroics among them:GaOOH,InOOH,CrOOH,FeOOH, which are earth-abundant minerals and have been experimentally verified to possess distorted rutile structures, are ferroelectric with considerable polarizations(up to 24 muC/cm2) and piezoelectric coefficients. Their atomic-thick layer may possess vertical polarization robust against depolarizing field due to the formation of O-H O bonds that can hardly be symmetrized. Moreover,CrOOH (guyanaite) is revealed to be a combination of high-Tc in-plane type-I multiferroics and vertical type-II multiferroics, which is strain-tunable and may render a desirable coupling between magnetism and ferroelectricity. Supported by experimental evidence on reversible conversion between metal oxyhydroxides and dioxides and their nice lattice match that renders convenient epitaxial growth, heterostructure composed of oxyhydroxides and prevalent metal dioxides (e.g. TiO2, SnO2 and CrO2) may be constructed for various applications like ferroelectric field-effect transistors and multiferroic tunneling junctions.

Stabilization and modulation of the topological magnetic phase with a $Z_2$-vortex lattice in the Kitaev-Heisenberg honeycomb model: The key role of the third-nearest-neighbor interaction

The topologically nontrivial magnetic phase with a $Z_2$-vortex (Z$_2$V) lattice is investigated by simulation in the Kitaev-Heisenberg honeycomb model expanded by considering the second- and third-nearest-neighbor Heisenberg interactions ($J_{H2}$ and $J_{H3}$). On the parameter region of the Z$_2$V phase, a gradual modulation of vortex density is observed, together with a transition from single-Z$_2$V to triple-Z$_2$V state driven by the variation of frustration. Additionally, $Z_2$ vortices are arranged in different manners on the whole honeycomb structure for these two types of Z$_2$V states. Moreover, topologically equivalent states are revealed to exist in single-Z$_2$V dominant and triple-Z$_2$V dominant styles on different parameter points, which can be controlled to switch between each other without energy consumption. It is worth noting that $J_{H3}$ plays a key role in expanding the Z$_2$V phase, and also in stabilizing the single-Z$_2$V state.

Possible origin of the absence of magnetic order in LiOsO$_3$: Spin-orbit coupling controlled ground state

LiOsO$_3$ is the first experimentally confirmed polar metal with ferroelectric-like distortion. One puzzling experimental fact is its paramagnetic state down to very low temperature with negligible magnetic moment, which is anomalous considering its $5d^3$ electron configuration since other osmium oxides (e.g. NaOsO$_3$) with $5d^3$ Os ions are magnetic. Here the magnetic and electronic properties of LiOsO$_3$ are re-investigated carefully using the first-principles density functional theory. Our calculations reveal that the magnetic state of LiOsO$_3$ can be completely suppressed by the spin-orbit coupling. The subtle balance between significant spin-orbit coupling and weak Hubbard $U$ of $5d$ electrons can explain both the nonmagnetic LiOsO$_3$ and magnetic NaOsO$_3$. Our work provides a reasonable understanding of the long-standing puzzle of magnetism in some osmium oxides.

Influence of drying temperature on morphology of MAPbI$_3$ thin films and the performance of solar cells

Photoelectric conversion efficiency of organic-inorganic perovskite solar cells has been rapidly raised and attracted great attention in recent years. The quality of perovskite films is vital for the performance of devices. We used the anti-solvent method to prepare CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$ thin films by spin coating and dried them at various temperature to transform adduct MAI.PbI$_2$.DMSO into CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$. We researched in detail on the relationship between surface morphology of MAPbI$_3$ thin films fabricated by the anti-solvent method and various drying temperature. We found that surface roughness and grain size of CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$ films together increased with increasing drying temperature. The larger grain size could efficiently reduce crystal boundaries which is advantageous for the suppression of photo-induced charge carrier recombination resulting in increase of FF. However, increase of surface roughness resulted in larger contact area at interface which might produce more tarp states and poorer wettability of HTM solution leading in decrease of Jsc. Surface morphology of MAPbI3 layer on the performance of solar cell devices is also an important research issue. By optimizing the drying temperature to 60 oC, the highest efficiency of 14.4% was achieved for the CH3NH3PbI3-based solar cell devices.

Electron mass enhancement and magnetic phase separation near the Mott transition in double layer ruthenates

We present a detailed investigation of the specific heat in Ca$_3$(Ru$_{1-x}M_x$)$_2$O$_7$ ($M$ = Ti, Fe, Mn) single crystals. With different dopants and doping levels, three distinct regions are present, including a quasi-2D metallic state with an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order formed by ferromagnetic bilayers (AFM-$b$), a Mott insulating state with G-type AFM order (G-AFM) and a localized state with a mixed AFM-b and G-AFM phase. Our specific heat data provide deep insights into the Mott transitions induced by Ti and Mn dopings. We observed not only an anomalous large mass enhancement but also an additional term in the specific heat i.e. $C\propto T^2$ in the localized region. The $C\propto T^2$ term is most likely due to the long-wavelength excitations with both FM and AFM components. A decrease of Debye temperature is observed in the G-type AFM region, indicating a lattice softening associated with the Mott transition.

Direct observation of ferroelectricity in Ca$_3$Mn$_2$O$_7$ and its prominent light absorption

Layered perovskites $A_3M_2$O$_7$ are known to exhibit the so-called hybrid improper ferroelectricity. Despite experimentally confirmed cases (e.g. nonmagnetic $M$=Ti and Sn), the ferroelectricity in magnetic Ca$_3$Mn$_2$O$_7$ remains a puzzle. Here, the structural, ferroelectric, magnetoelectric, and optical properties of Ca$_3$Mn$_2$O$_7$ are systematically investigated. Switchable polarization is directly measured, demonstrating its ferroelectricity. In addition, magnetoelectric response is also evidenced, implying the coupling between magnetism and ferroelectricity. Furthermore, strong visible light absorption is observed, which can be understood from its electronic structure. Its direct and appropriate band gap, as well as wide conducting bands, makes Ca$_3$Mn$_2$O$_7$ a potential candidate for ferroelectric photoelectric applications.

Application of compact TiO$_2$ layer fabricated by pulsed laser deposition in organometal trihalide perovskite solar cells

Organometal trihalide perovskite solar cells have been rapidly developed and attracted much attention in recent years due to their high photoelectric conversion efficiency and low cost. Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) is a widely adopted technology which is used in the preparation of thin films, especially oxide thin films. With this technology, the thickness and composition of films can be conveniently and accurately controlled. In the structure of perovskite solar cells, TiO$_2$ layer working as the n-type semiconductor is used to block holes and transport electrons into electrode, which is crucial for the performance of whole devices. We introduced the PLD technique into preparation of TiO$_2$ layer. In comparison with common spin coating method, TiO$_2$ layer prepared by this technique is ultrathin and more compact. Compact TiO$_2$ (c-TiO$_2$) layers with optimized thickness of 32 nm have been prepared by the PLD method and the highest efficiency of 13.95 % for the MAPbI$_3$-based solar cell devices has been achieved.
