Where is VALDO? VAscular Lesions Detection and segmentatiOn challenge at MICCAI 2021

Imaging markers of cerebral small vessel disease provide valuable information on brain health, but their manual assessment is time-consuming and hampered by substantial intra- and interrater variability. Automated rating may benefit biomedical research, as well as clinical assessment, but diagnostic reliability of existing algorithms is unknown. Here, we present the results of the \textit{VAscular Lesions DetectiOn and Segmentation} (\textit{Where is VALDO?}) challenge that was run as a satellite event at the international conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Aided Intervention (MICCAI) 2021. This challenge aimed to promote the development of methods for automated detection and segmentation of small and sparse imaging markers of cerebral small vessel disease, namely enlarged perivascular spaces (EPVS) (Task 1), cerebral microbleeds (Task 2) and lacunes of presumed vascular origin (Task 3) while leveraging weak and noisy labels. Overall, 12 teams participated in the challenge proposing solutions for one or more tasks (4 for Task 1 - EPVS, 9 for Task 2 - Microbleeds and 6 for Task 3 - Lacunes). Multi-cohort data was used in both training and evaluation. Results showed a large variability in performance both across teams and across tasks, with promising results notably for Task 1 - EPVS and Task 2 - Microbleeds and not practically useful results yet for Task 3 - Lacunes. It also highlighted the performance inconsistency across cases that may deter use at an individual level, while still proving useful at a population level.

DFNet: Enhance Absolute Pose Regression with Direct Feature Matching

We introduce a camera relocalization pipeline that combines absolute pose regression (APR) and direct feature matching. By incorporating exposure-adaptive novel view synthesis, our method successfully addresses photometric distortions in outdoor environments that existing photometric-based methods fail to handle. With domain-invariant feature matching, our solution improves pose regression accuracy using semi-supervised learning on unlabeled data. In particular, the pipeline consists of two components: Novel View Synthesizer and DFNet. The former synthesizes novel views compensating for changes in exposure and the latter regresses camera poses and extracts robust features that close the domain gap between real images and synthetic ones. Furthermore, we introduce an online synthetic data generation scheme. We show that these approaches effectively enhance camera pose estimation both in indoor and outdoor scenes. Hence, our method achieves a state-of-the-art accuracy by outperforming existing single-image APR methods by as much as 56%, comparable to 3D structure-based methods.

The gravimeter based on atom interferometry has potentially wide applications on building the gravity networks, geophysics as well as gravity assisted navigation. Here, we demonstrate experimentally a portable atom gravimeter operating in the noisy urban environment. Despite the influence of noisy external vibrations, our portable atom gravimeter reaches a sensitivity as good as 65 uGal/\sqrt{Hz} and a resolution of 1.1 uGal after 4000 s integration time, being comparable to state-of-the-art atom gravimeters. Our achievement paves the way for bring the portable atom gravimeter to field applications, such as gravity survey on a moving platform.

Modeling Users' Behavior Sequences with Hierarchical Explainable Network for Cross-domain Fraud Detection

With the explosive growth of the e-commerce industry, detecting online transaction fraud in real-world applications has become increasingly important to the development of e-commerce platforms. The sequential behavior history of users provides useful information in differentiating fraudulent payments from regular ones. Recently, some approaches have been proposed to solve this sequence-based fraud detection problem. However, these methods usually suffer from two problems: the prediction results are difficult to explain and the exploitation of the internal information of behaviors is insufficient. To tackle the above two problems, we propose a Hierarchical Explainable Network (HEN) to model users' behavior sequences, which could not only improve the performance of fraud detection but also make the inference process interpretable. Meanwhile, as e-commerce business expands to new domains, e.g., new countries or new markets, one major problem for modeling user behavior in fraud detection systems is the limitation of data collection, e.g., very few data/labels available. Thus, in this paper, we further propose a transfer framework to tackle the cross-domain fraud detection problem, which aims to transfer knowledge from existing domains (source domains) with enough and mature data to improve the performance in the new domain (target domain). Our proposed method is a general transfer framework that could not only be applied upon HEN but also various existing models in the Embedding & MLP paradigm. Based on 90 transfer task experiments, we also demonstrate that our transfer framework could not only contribute to the cross-domain fraud detection task with HEN, but also be universal and expandable for various existing models.

Neural Hierarchical Factorization Machines for User's Event Sequence Analysis

Many prediction tasks of real-world applications need to model multi-order feature interactions in user's event sequence for better detection performance. However, existing popular solutions usually suffer two key issues: 1) only focusing on feature interactions and failing to capture the sequence influence; 2) only focusing on sequence information, but ignoring internal feature relations of each event, thus failing to extract a better event representation. In this paper, we consider a two-level structure for capturing the hierarchical information over user's event sequence: 1) learning effective feature interactions based event representation; 2) modeling the sequence representation of user's historical events. Experimental results on both industrial and public datasets clearly demonstrate that our model achieves significantly better performance compared with state-of-the-art baselines.

Direct-PoseNet: Absolute Pose Regression with Photometric Consistency

We present a relocalization pipeline, which combines an absolute pose regression (APR) network with a novel view synthesis based direct matching module, offering superior accuracy while maintaining low inference time. Our contribution is twofold: i) we design a direct matching module that supplies a photometric supervision signal to refine the pose regression network via differentiable rendering; ii) we modify the rotation representation from the classical quaternion to SO(3) in pose regression, removing the need for balancing rotation and translation loss terms. As a result, our network Direct-PoseNet achieves state-of-the-art performance among all other single-image APR methods on the 7-Scenes benchmark and the LLFF dataset.

SHORING: Design Provable Conditional High-Order Interaction Network via Symbolic Testing

Deep learning provides a promising way to extract effective representations from raw data in an end-to-end fashion and has proven its effectiveness in various domains such as computer vision, natural language processing, etc. However, in domains such as content/product recommendation and risk management, where sequence of event data is the most used raw data form and experts derived features are more commonly used, deep learning models struggle to dominate the game. In this paper, we propose a symbolic testing framework that helps to answer the question of what kinds of expert-derived features could be learned by a neural network. Inspired by this testing framework, we introduce an efficient architecture named SHORING, which contains two components: \textit{event network} and \textit{sequence network}. The \textit{event} network learns arbitrarily yet efficiently high-order \textit{event-level} embeddings via a provable reparameterization trick, the \textit{sequence} network aggregates from sequence of \textit{event-level} embeddings. We argue that SHORING is capable of learning certain standard symbolic expressions which the standard multi-head self-attention network fails to learn, and conduct comprehensive experiments and ablation studies on four synthetic datasets and three real-world datasets. The results show that SHORING empirically outperforms the state-of-the-art methods.

Modeling the Field Value Variations and Field Interactions Simultaneously for Fraud Detection

With the explosive growth of e-commerce, online transaction fraud has become one of the biggest challenges for e-commerce platforms. The historical behaviors of users provide rich information for digging into the users' fraud risk. While considerable efforts have been made in this direction, a long-standing challenge is how to effectively exploit internal user information and provide explainable prediction results. In fact, the value variations of same field from different events and the interactions of different fields inside one event have proven to be strong indicators for fraudulent behaviors. In this paper, we propose the Dual Importance-aware Factorization Machines (DIFM), which exploits the internal field information among users' behavior sequence from dual perspectives, i.e., field value variations and field interactions simultaneously for fraud detection. The proposed model is deployed in the risk management system of one of the world's largest e-commerce platforms, which utilize it to provide real-time transaction fraud detection. Experimental results on real industrial data from different regions in the platform clearly demonstrate that our model achieves significant improvements compared with various state-of-the-art baseline models. Moreover, the DIFM could also give an insight into the explanation of the prediction results from dual perspectives.

Region-of-interest guided Supervoxel Inpainting for Self-supervision

Self-supervised learning has proven to be invaluable in making best use of all of the available data in biomedical image segmentation. One particularly simple and effective mechanism to achieve self-supervision is inpainting, the task of predicting arbitrary missing areas based on the rest of an image. In this work, we focus on image inpainting as the self-supervised proxy task, and propose two novel structural changes to further enhance the performance of a deep neural network. We guide the process of generating images to inpaint by using supervoxel-based masking instead of random masking, and also by focusing on the area to be segmented in the primary task, which we term as the region-of-interest. We postulate that these additions force the network to learn semantics that are more attuned to the primary task, and test our hypotheses on two applications: brain tumour and white matter hyperintensities segmentation. We empirically show that our proposed approach consistently outperforms both supervised CNNs, without any self-supervision, and conventional inpainting-based self-supervision methods on both large and small training set sizes.

Realization of ideal Weyl semimetal band in ultracold quantum gas with 3D Spin-Orbit coupling

The Weyl semimetals [1-6] are three-dimensional (3D) gapless topological phases with Weyl cones in the bulk band, and host massless quasiparticles known as Weyl fermions which were theorized by Hermann Weyl in the last twenties [7]. The lattice theory constrains that Weyl cones must come in pairs, with the minimal number of cones being two. The semimetal with only two Weyl cones is an ideal Weyl semimetal (IWSM) which is the optimal platform to explore broad Weyl physics but hard to engineer in solids. Here, we report the experimental realization of the IWSM band by synthesising for the first time a 3D spin-orbit (SO) coupling for ultracold atoms. Engineering a 3D configuration-tunable optical Raman lattice [8], we realize the Weyl type SO coupling for ultracold quantum gas, with which the IWSM band is achieved with controllability. The topological Weyl points are clearly measured via the virtual slicing imaging technique [8, 9] in equilibrium, and further resolved in the quench dynamics, revealing the key information of the realized IWSM bands. The realization of the IWSM band opens an avenue to investigate various exotic phenomena based on the optimal Weyl semimetal platforms.

Side-On transition radiation detector: a detector prototype for TeV energy scale calibration of calorimeters in space

Transition Radiation (TR) plays an important role in particle identification in high-energy physics and its characteristics provide a feasible method of energy calibration in the energy range up to 10 TeV, which is of interest for dark matter searches in cosmic rays. In a Transition Radiation Detector (TRD), the TR signal is superimposed onto the ionization energy loss signal induced by incident charged particles. In order to make the TR signal stand out from the background of ionization energy loss in a significant way, we optimized both the radiators and the detector. We have designed a new prototype of regular radiator optimized for a maximal TR photon yield, combined with the Side-On TRD which is supposed to improve the detection efficiency of TR. We started a test beam experiment with the Side-On TRD at Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire (CERN), and found that the experimental data is consistent with the simulation results.

A New Local Transformation Module for Few-shot Segmentation

Few-shot segmentation segments object regions of new classes with a few of manual annotations. Its key step is to establish the transformation module between support images (annotated images) and query images (unlabeled images), so that the segmentation cues of support images can guide the segmentation of query images. The existing methods form transformation model based on global cues, which however ignores the local cues that are verified in this paper to be very important for the transformation. This paper proposes a new transformation module based on local cues, where the relationship of the local features is used for transformation. To enhance the generalization performance of the network, the relationship matrix is calculated in a high-dimensional metric embedding space based on cosine distance. In addition, to handle the challenging mapping problem from the low-level local relationships to high-level semantic cues, we propose to apply generalized inverse matrix of the annotation matrix of support images to transform the relationship matrix linearly, which is non-parametric and class-agnostic. The result by the matrix transformation can be regarded as an attention map with high-level semantic cues, based on which a transformation module can be built simply. The proposed transformation module is a general module that can be used to replace the transformation module in the existing few-shot segmentation frameworks. We verify the effectiveness of the proposed method on Pascal VOC 2012 dataset. The value of mIoU achieves at 57.0% in 1-shot and 60.6% in 5-shot, which outperforms the state-of-the-art method by 1.6% and 3.5%, respectively.

Design of Phosphorene for Hydrogen Evolution Performance Comparable to Platinum

Phosphorene, a monolayer of bulk black phosphorus, is promising for light harvest owing to its high charge mobility and tunable direct band gap covering a broad spectral range of light. Here, via atomic-scale first-principles simulations, we report a ultrahigh activity of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) of phosphorene originated from defective activation. Quantitative evaluation of the Gibbs free energy of the ad desorption of hydrogen (H) to from phosphorene (delta_GH) reveals that atomic vacancies and edges play a dominant role in activating the reaction. We find that the defective states, empty and well-localized around the defect core, are compensated by H species. This induces a proper hydrogen interaction complying with the thermoneutral condition of the free energy (delta_GH=0) comparable to platinum. Our findings of the highly activating defective states suggest the design of non-metal HER catalysts with structural engineering of earth-abundant phosphorus structures.

Evolution of Intrinsic Vacancies and Prolonged Lifetime of Vacancy Clusters in Black Phosphorene

Due to the relatively low formation energies and highly mobile characteristics of atomic vacancies in phosphorene, understanding their evolutions becomes crucial for its structural integrity, chemical activities and applications. Herein, by combining first-principles calculations and kinetic Monte Carlo simulation, we investigate the time evolution and formation of atomic vacancy clusters from isolated monovacancies (MVs), aiming to uncover the mechanisms of diffusion, annihilation, reaction of these atomic vacancies. We find that while isolated MVs possess a highly mobile character, they react and form MV pairs which possess much lower mobility and high stability under ambient condition. We also show that the disappearance of MVs at the edge is quite slow due to the relatively high energy barrier, and as a result, around 80% of MVs remains even after two years under ambient condition. Our findings on one hand provide useful information for the structural repairing of phosphorene through chemical functionalization of these vacancy clusters, and on the other hand, suggest that these rather stable vacancy clusters may be used as an activated catalyst.

Class Activation Map generation by Multiple Level Class Grouping and Orthogonal Constraint

Class activation map (CAM) highlights regions of classes based on classification network, which is widely used in weakly supervised tasks. However, it faces the problem that the class activation regions are usually small and local. Although several efforts paid to the second step (the CAM generation step) have partially enhanced the generation, we believe such problem is also caused by the first step (training step), because single classification model trained on the entire classes contains finite discriminate information that limits the object region extraction. To this end, this paper solves CAM generation by using multiple classification models. To form multiple classification networks that carry different discriminative information, we try to capture the semantic relationships between classes to form different semantic levels of classification models. Specifically, hierarchical clustering based on class relationships is used to form hierarchical clustering results, where the clustering levels are treated as semantic levels to form the classification models. Moreover, a new orthogonal module and a two-branch based CAM generation method are proposed to generate class regions that are orthogonal and complementary. We use the PASCAL VOC 2012 dataset to verify the proposed method. Experimental results show that our approach improves the CAM generation.

Critical role of the sign structure in the doped Mott insulator: Superconductivity vs. Fermi liquid

Mechanism of superconductivity (SC) in a purely interacting electron system has been one of the most challenging issues in condensed matter physics. In the BCS theory, the Landau's Fermi liquid is a normal state against which an SC instability occurs once an \emph{additional} pairing force is added. We show that in the doped Mott insulator an \emph{intrinsic} SC ground state (specifically a Luther-Emery state in a finite-doping two-leg $t$-$J$ ladder) can be directly turned into a Fermi-gas-like state by merely switching off the hidden statistical sign structure via two schemes. It points to a new pairing paradigm, %beyond the resonating-valence-bond scheme, which is an "Amperean-like pairing" with a "stringlike" pairing force as shown by an adiabatic continuity to a strong anisotropic limit of the model.

Multi-Task Attention-Based Semi-Supervised Learning for Medical Image Segmentation

We propose a novel semi-supervised image segmentation method that simultaneously optimizes a supervised segmentation and an unsupervised reconstruction objectives. The reconstruction objective uses an attention mechanism that separates the reconstruction of image areas corresponding to different classes. The proposed approach was evaluated on two applications: brain tumor and white matter hyperintensities segmentation. Our method, trained on unlabeled and a small number of labeled images, outperformed supervised CNNs trained with the same number of images and CNNs pre-trained on unlabeled data. In ablation experiments, we observed that the proposed attention mechanism substantially improves segmentation performance. We explore two multi-task training strategies: joint training and alternating training. Alternating training requires fewer hyperparameters and achieves a better, more stable performance than joint training. Finally, we analyze the features learned by different methods and find that the attention mechanism helps to learn more discriminative features in the deeper layers of encoders.

Single-hole wave function in two dimensions: A case study of the doped Mott insulator

We study a ground-state ansatz for the single-hole doped $t$-$J$ model in two dimensions via a variational Monte Carlo (VMC) method. Such a single-hole wave function possesses finite angular momenta generated by hidden spin currents, which give rise to a novel ground state degeneracy in agreement with recent exact diagonalization (ED) and density matrix renormalization group (DMGR) results. We further show that the wave function can be decomposed into a quasiparticle component and an incoherent momentum distribution in excellent agreement with the DMRG results up to an $8\times 8 $ lattice. Such a two-component structure indicates the breakdown of Landau's one-to-one correspondence principle, and in particular, the quasiparticle spectral weight vanishes by a power law in the large sample-size limit. By contrast, turning off the phase string induced by the hole hopping in the so-called $σ\cdot t\text{-}J$ model, a conventional Bloch-wave wave function with a finite quasiparticle spectral weight can be recovered, also in agreement with the ED and DMRG results. The present study shows that a singular effect already takes place in the single-hole-doped Mott insulator, by which the bare hole is turned into a non-Landau quasiparticle with translational symmetry breaking. Generalizations to pairing and finite doping are briefly discussed.
