Focusing Ultrasound with Acoustic Metamaterial Network

We present the first experimental demonstration of focusing ultrasound waves through a flat acoustic metamaterial lens composed of a planar network of subwavelength Helmholtz resonators. We observed a tight focus of half-wavelength in width at 60.5 KHz by imaging a point source. This result is in excellent agreement with the numerical simulation by transmission line model in which we derived the effective mass density and compressibility. This metamaterial lens also displays variable focal length at different frequencies. Our experiment shows the promise of designing compact and light-weight ultrasound imaging elements.

Integral and Rxte/Asm Observations on Igr J17098-3628

To probe further the possible nature of the unidentified source IGR J17098-3628, we have carried out a detailed analysis of its long-term time variability as monitored by RXTE/ASM, and of its hard X-ray properties as observed by INTEGRAL. INTEGRAL has monitored this sky region over years and significantly detected IGR J17098-3628 only when the source was in this dubbed active state. In particular, at $\ge$ 20 keV, IBIS/ISGRI caught an outburst in March 2005, lasting for $\sim$5 days with detection significance of 73$σ$ (20-40 keV) and with the emission at $< $200 keV. The ASM observations reveal that the soft X-ray lightcurve shows a similar outburst to that detected by INTEGRAL, however the peak of the soft X-ray lightcurve either lags, or is preceded by, the hard X-ray ($>$20 keV) outburst by $\sim$2 days. This resembles the behavior of X-ray novae like XN 1124-683, hence it further suggests a LMXB nature for IGR J17098-3628. While the quality of the ASM data prevents us from drawing any definite conclusions, these discoveries are important clues that, coupled with future observations, will help to resolve the as yet unknown nature of IGR J17098-3628.

High energy properties of PKS 1830-211

We report on an analysis of X- and $γ$-ray observations of PKS 1830-211, based on the long-term campaigns carried out by \emph{INTEGRAL} and COMPTEL. The \emph{INTEGRAL} data currently available present a $33σ$ significance detection in the 20-100 keV band, while the COMPTEL 6-years data provide a $5.2σ$ significance detection in the 1-3 MeV energy band. At hard X-rays, \emph{INTEGRAL} and supplementary \emph{SWIFT} observations show flux variability on timescales of months. At $γ$-rays, the source shows persistent emission over years. The hard X-ray spectrum is well represented by a power-law model, with $Γ\sim 1.3$ in the 20-250 keV band. This photon index is well consistent with the previous report of $Γ\sim 1.3$ obtained at $E > 3.5$ keV from the best fit of \emph{XMM-Newton} data with a broken power law model. The joint \emph{XMM-Newton}/\emph{INTEGRAL} spectrum presented here is then fit with a broken power-law model and the parameters are refined compared to the previous. The results show the photon index changes from $\sim 1.0$ to $\sim 1.3$ at a break energy $\sim 4$ keV. At MeV energies, the spectrum softens to $Γ\sim 2.2$. These results, together with the EGRET measurement at $E \ge 100$ MeV, constitute a broad-band spectrum containing the peak of the power output at MeV energies, similar to most high-luminosity $γ$-ray blazars. The measured spectral characterstics are then discussed in the framework of the gravitational lens effects.

Spins of the supermassive black hole in M87: new constraints from TeV observations

The rapid TeV $γ-$ray variability detected in the well-known nearby radio galaxy M87 implies an extremely compact emission region (5-10 Schwarzschild radii) near the horizon of the supermassive black hole in the galactic center. TeV photons are affected by dilution due to interaction with the radiation field of the advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) around the black hole, and can thus be used to probe the innermost regions around the black hole. We calculate the optical depth of the ADAF radiation field to the TeV photons and find it strongly depends on the spin of the black hole. We find that transparent radii of 10 TeV photons are of $5R_{\rm S}$ and $13R_{\rm S}$ for the maximally rotating and non-rotating black holes, respectively. With the observations, the calculated transparent radii strongly suggest the black hole is spinning fast in the galaxy. TeV photons could be used as a powerful diagnostic for estimating black hole spins in galaxies in the future.

X-ray Spectral and timing properties of the black hole x-ray transient Swift J1753.5-0127

We have carried out detailed analysis on the black hole candidate (BHC) X- ray transient Swift J1753.5-0127 observed by the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) during its outburst in 2005 {2006. The spectral analysis shows that the emissions are dominated by the hard X-rays, thus revealing the low/hard state of the source during the outburst. The peak luminosity is found lower than the typical value of balancing the mass flow and evaporation of the inner edge of disk (Meyer-Hofmeister 2004). As a result, the disk is prevented from extending inward to produce strong soft X-rays, corresponding to the so-called high/soft state. These are the typical characteristics for a small subset of BHCs, i.e. those soft X-ray transients stay at the low/hard state during the outburst. In most observational time, the QPO frequencies are found to vary roughly linearly with the fluxes and the spectral indices, while the deviation from this relationship at the peak luminosity might provide the first observational evidence of a partially evaporated inner edge of the accretion disk. The anti-correlation between the QPO frequency and spectral color suggests that the global disk oscillation model proposed by Titarchuk & Osherovich (2000) is not likely at work.

INTEGRAL/XMM views on the MeV source GRO J1411-64

The COMPTEL unidentified source GRO J 1411-64 was observed by INTEGRAL and XMM-Newton in 2005. The Circinus Galaxy is the only source detected within the 4$σ$ location error of GRO J1411-64, but in here excluded as the possible counterpart. At soft X-rays, 22 reliable and statistically significant sources (likelihood $> 10$) were extracted and analyzed from XMM-Newton data. Only one of these sources, XMMU J141255.6 -635932, is spectrally compatible with GRO J1411-64 although the fact the soft X-ray observations do not cover the full extent of the COMPTEL source position uncertainty make an association hard to quantify and thus risky. At the best location of the source, detections at hard X-rays show only upper limits, which, together with MeV results obtained by COMPTEL suggest the existence of a peak in power output located somewhere between 300-700 keV for the so-called low state. Such a spectrum resembles those in blazars or microquasars, and might suggest at work by a similar scenario. However, an analysis using a microquasar model consisting on a magnetized conical jet filled with relativistic electrons, shows that it is hard to comply with all observational constrains. This fact and the non-detection at hard X-rays introduce an a-posteriori question mark upon the physical reality of this source, what is discussed here.

INTEGRAL and XMM-Newton observations towards the unidentified MeV source GRO J1411-64

The COMPTEL unidentified source GRO J1411-64 was observed by INTEGRAL, and its central part, also by XMM-Newton. The data analysis shows no hint for new detections at hard X-rays. The upper limits in flux herein presented constrain the energy spectrum of whatever was producing GRO J1411-64, imposing, in the framework of earlier COMPTEL observations, the existence of a peak in power output located somewhere between 300-700 keV for the so-called low state. The Circinus Galaxy is the only source detected within the 4$σ$ location error of GRO J1411-64, but can be safely excluded as the possible counterpart: the extrapolation of the energy spectrum is well below the one for GRO J1411-64 at MeV energies. 22 significant sources (likelihood $> 10$) were extracted and analyzed from XMM-Newton data. Only one of these sources, XMMU J141255.6-635932, is spectrally compatible with GRO J1411-64 although the fact the soft X-ray observations do not cover the full extent of the COMPTEL source position uncertainty make an association hard to quantify and thus risky. The unique peak of the power output at high energies (hard X-rays and gamma-rays) resembles that found in the SED seen in blazars or microquasars. However, an analysis using a microquasar model consisting on a magnetized conical jet filled with relativistic electrons which radiate through synchrotron and inverse Compton scattering with star, disk, corona and synchrotron photons shows that it is hard to comply with all observational constrains. This and the non-detection at hard X-rays introduce an a-posteriori question mark upon the physical reality of this source, which is discussed in some detail.

Recovery of the orbital parameters and pulse evolution of V0332+53 during a huge outburst

The high mass X-ray binary (HMXB) V0332+53 became active at the end of 2004 and the outburst was observed at hard X-rays by RXTE and INTEGRAL. Based on these hard X-ray observations, the orbital parameters are measured through fitting the Doppler-shifted spin periods. The derived orbital period and eccentricity are consistent with those of Stella et al. (1985) obtained from EXOSAT observations, whereas the projected semimajor axis and the periastron longitude are found to have changed from 48$\pm$4 to 86$^{+6}_{-10}$ lt-s and from 313$^{\circ}$$\pm$10 to 283$^{\circ}$$\pm$14, respectively. This would indicate an angular speed of $\geq$ 1.5$^{\circ}$$\pm$0.8 yr$^{-1}$ for rotation of the orbit over the past 21 years. The periastron passage time of MJD 53367$\pm$1 is just around the time when the intensity reached maximum and an orbital period earlier is the time when the outburst started. This correlation resembles the behavior of a Type I outburst. During outburst the source spun up with a rate of 8.01$^{+1.00}_{-1.14}$$\times10^{-6}$ s day$^{-1}$. The evolution of pulse profile is highly intensity dependent. The separation of double pulses remained almost constant ($\sim$ 0.47) when the source was bright, and dropped to 0.37 within $\leq$ 3 days as the source became weaker. The pulse evolution of V0332+53 may correlate to the change in dominance of the emission between fan-beam and pencil-beam mechanisms.

Charge and spin dynamics in the one-dimensional $t-J_z$ and $t-J$ models

The impact of the spin-flip terms on the (static and dynamic) charge and spin correlations in the Luttinger-liquid ground state of the 1D $t-J$ model is assessed by comparison with the same quantities in the 1D $t-J_z$ model, where spin-flip terms are absent. We employ the recursion method combined with a weak-coupling or a strong-coupling continued-fraction analysis. At $J_z/t=0^+$ we use the Pfaffian representation of dynamic spin correlations. The changing nature of the dynamically relevant charge and spin excitations on approach of the transition to phase separation is investigated in detail. The $t-J_z$ charge excitations (but not the spin excitations) at the transition have a single-mode nature, whereas charge and spin excitations have a complicated structure in the $t-J$ model. In the $t-J_z$ model, phase separation is accompanied by Néel long-range order, caused by the condensation of electron clusters with an already existing alternating up-down spin configuration (topological long-range order). In the $t-J$ model, by contrast, the spin-flip processes in the exchange coupling are responsible for continued strong spin fluctuations (dominated by 2-spinon excitations) in the phase-separated state.

Order-parameter fluctuations in the frustrated Heisenberg model on the square lattice

The $T=0$ dynamics of the two-dimensional $s=1/2$ Heisenberg model with competing nearest-neighbor $(J_1)$ and next-nearest-neighbor $(J_2)$ interactions is explored via the recursion method, specifically the frequency-dependent fluctuations of the order parameters associated with some of the known or suspected ordering tendencies in this system, i.e. Néel, collinear, dimer, and chiral order. The results for the dynamic structure factors of the respective fluctuation operators show a strong indication of collinear order at $J_2/J_1 \gtrsim 0.6$ and a potential for dimer order at $0.5 \lesssim J_2/J_1 \lesssim 0.6$, whereas the chiral ordering tendency is observed to be considerably weaker.

Impact of criticality and phase separation on the spin dynamics of the one-dimensional t-J model

The recursion method is used to determine the T=0 spin dynamic structure factor S_{zz}(q,ω) in the Luttinger liquid state and in the phase-separated state of the one-dimensional t-J model. As the exchange coupling increases from zero, the dispersions and line shapes of the dominant spin excitations are observed to undergo a major metamorphosis between the free-fermion limit and the onset of phase separation. The familiar two-spinon spectrum of the Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain emerges gradually in the strongly phase-separated state.
