Intertwining of lasing and superradiance under spintronic pumping

We introduce a quantum optics platform featuring the minimal ingredients for the description of a spintronically pumped magnon condensate, which we use to promote driven-dissipative phase transitions in the context of spintronics. We consider a Dicke model weakly coupled to an out-of-equilibrium bath with a tunable spin accumulation. The latter is pumped incoherently in a fashion reminiscent of experiments with magnet-metal heterostructures. The core of our analysis is the emergence of a hybrid lasing-superradiant regime that does not take place in an ordinary pumped Dicke spin ensemble, and which can be traced back to the spintronics pumping scheme. We interpret the resultant non-equilibrium phase diagram from both a quantum optics and a spintronics standpoint, supplying a conceptual bridge between the two fields. The outreach of our results concern dynamical control in magnon condensates and frequency-dependent gain media in quantum optics.

Vertical Federated Linear Contextual Bandits

In this paper, we investigate a novel problem of building contextual bandits in the vertical federated setting, i.e., contextual information is vertically distributed over different departments. This problem remains largely unexplored in the research community. To this end, we carefully design a customized encryption scheme named orthogonal matrix-based mask mechanism(O3M) for encrypting local contextual information while avoiding expensive conventional cryptographic techniques. We further apply the mechanism to two commonly-used bandit algorithms, LinUCB and LinTS, and instantiate two practical protocols for online recommendation under the vertical federated setting. The proposed protocols can perfectly recover the service quality of centralized bandit algorithms while achieving a satisfactory runtime efficiency, which is theoretically proved and analyzed in this paper. By conducting extensive experiments on both synthetic and real-world datasets, we show the superiority of the proposed method in terms of privacy protection and recommendation performance.

First search for the absorption of fermionic dark matter with the PandaX-4T experiment

Compared with the signature of dark matter elastic scattering off nuclei, the absorption of fermionic dark matter by nuclei opens up a new searching channel for light dark matter with a characteristic monoenergetic signal. In this Letter, we explore the $95.0$-day data from the PandaX-4T commissioning run and report the first dedicated searching results of the fermionic dark matter absorption signal through a neutral current process. No significant signal was found, and the lowest limit on the dark matter-nucleon interaction cross section is set to be $1.5\times10^{-50}$ cm$^2$ for a fermionic dark matter mass of $40$ MeV/$c^2$ with 90\% confidence level.

Return of 4U~1730--22 after 49 years silence: the peculiar burst properties of the 2021/2022 outbursts observed by Insight-HXMT

After in quiescence for 49 years, 4U~1730--22 became active and had two outbursts in 2021 \& 2022; ten thermonuclear X-ray bursts were detected with Insight-HXMT. Among them, the faintest burst showed a double-peaked profile, placing the source as the 5th accreting neutron star (NS) exhibiting double/triple-peaked type-I X-ray bursts; the other bursts showed photospheric radius expansion (PRE). The properties of double-peaked non-PRE burst indicate that it could be related to a stalled burning front. For the five bright PRE bursts, apart from the emission from the neutron star (NS) surface, we find the residuals both in the soft ($<$3 keV) and hard ($>$10 keV) X-ray band. Time-resolved spectroscopy reveals that the excess can be attributed to an enhanced pre-burst/persistent emission or the Comptonization of the burst emission by the corona/boundary-layer. We find, the burst emission shows a rise until the photosphere touches down to the NS surface rather than the theoretical predicted constant Eddington luminosity. The shortage of the burst emission in the early rising phase is beyond the occlusion by the disk. We speculate that the findings above correspond to that the obscured part (not only the lower part) of the NS surface is exposed to the line of sight due to the evaporation of the obscured material by the burst emission, or the burst emission is anisotropic ($ξ>1$) in the burst early phase. In addition, based on the average flux of PRE bursts at their touch-down time, we derive a distance estimation as 10.4 kpc.

High energy Millihertz quasi-periodic oscillations in 1A 0535+262 with Insight-HXMT challenge current models

We studied the millihertz quasi-periodic oscillation (mHz QPO) in the 2020 outburst of the Be/X-ray binary 1A 0535+262 using Insight-HXMT data over a broad energy band. The mHz QPO is detected in the 27-120 keV energy band. The QPO centroid frequency is correlated with the source flux, and evolves in the 35-95 mHz range during the outburst. The QPO is most significant in the 50-65 keV band, with a significance of ~ 8 sigma, but is hardly detectable (<2 sigma) in the lowest (1-27 keV) and highest (>120 keV) energy bands. Notably, the detection of mHz QPO above 80 keV is the highest energy at which mHz QPOs have been detected so far. The fractional rms of the mHz QPO first increases and then decreases with energy, reaching the maximum amplitude at 50-65 keV. In addition, at the peak of the outburst, the mHz QPO shows a double-peak structure, with the difference between the two peaks being constant at ~0.02 Hz, twice the spin frequency of the neutron star in this system. We discuss different scenarios explaining the generation of the mHz QPO, including the beat frequency model, the Keplerian frequency model, the model of two jets in opposite directions, and the precession of the neutron star, but find that none of them can explain the origin of the QPO well. We conclude that the variability of non-thermal radiation may account for the mHz QPO, but further theoretical studies are needed to reveal the physical mechanism.

Vlasov Simulation of Emissive Plasma Sheath with Energy-Dependent Secondary Emission Coefficient and Improved Modeling for Dielectric Charging Effects

A one dimensional Vlasov Poisson simulation code is employed to investigate the plasma sheath considering electron induced secondary electron emission (SEE) and backscattering. The SEE coefficient is commonly treated as constant in a range of plasma simulations, here improved SEE model of a charged dielectric wall is constructed which includes the wall charging effect on SEE coefficient and the energy dependency of SEE coefficient. Pertinent algorithms to implement above SEE model in plasma simulation are studied in detail. It is found that the SEE coefficient increases with the amount of negative wall charges, which in turn reduces the emissive sheath potential. With energy dependent SEE coefficient, the sheath potential is a nonlinear function of the plasma electron temperature, as opposed to the linear relation predicted by classic emissive sheath theory. Simulation combining both wall charging effect and SEE coefficient energy dependency suggests that the space charged limited sheath is formed at high plasma electron temperature levels, where both sheath potential and surface charging saturate. Additionally, different algorithms to implement the backscattering in kinetic simulation are tested and compared. Converting backscattered electron to secondary electron via an effective SEE coefficient barely affects the sheath properties. The simulation results are shown to be commensurate with the upgraded sheath theory predictions.

Insight-HXMT observation on 4U~1608--52: evidence of interplay between thermonuclear burst and accretion environments

A type-I burst could influence the accretion process through radiation pressure and Comptonization both for the accretion disk and the corona/boundary layer of an X-ray binary, and vice versa. We investigate the temporal evolution of a bright photospheric radius expansion (PRE) burst of 4U 1608-52 detected by Insight-HXMT in 1-50 keV, with the aim of studying the interplay between the burst and persistent emission. Apart from the emission from the neutron star (NS) surface, we find the residuals both in the soft (<3 keV) and hard (>10 keV) X-ray band. Time-resolved spectroscopy reveals that the excess can be attributed to an enhanced pre-burst/persistent emission or the Comptonization of the burst emission by the corona/boundary layer. The Comptonization model is a convolution thermal-Comptonization model (thcomp in XSPEC) and the Comptonization parameters are fixed at the values derived from the persistent emission. We find, during the PRE phase, after the enhanced pre-burst/persistent emission or the Comptonization of the burst emission is removed, the NS surface emission shows a plateau, and then a rise until the photosphere touches down to the NS surface, resulting in a flux peak at that moment. We speculate that the findings above correspond to that the obscured lower part of the NS surface by the disk is exposed to the line of sight due to the inner disk evaporation by the burst emission. The consistency between the fa model and convolution thermal-Comptonization model indicates the interplay between thermonuclear bursts and accretion environments. These phenomena did not usually show up by the conventional blackbody model fitting, which may be due to low count rate and narrow energy coverage in previous observations.

The prolific thermonuclear X-ray bursts from the outburst of the newly discovered millisecond pulsar MAXI~J1816--195 observed by Insight-HXMT and NICER

MAXI J1816-195 is a newly discovered accreting millisecond pulsar with prolific thermonuclear bursts, detected during its outburst in 2022 June by Insight-HXMT and NICER. During the outburst, Insight-HXMT detected 73 bursts in its peak and decay phase, serving as a prolific burst system found in the accreting millisecond pulsars. By analyzing one burst which was simultaneously detected by Insight-HXMT and NICER, we find a mild deviation from the conventional blackbody model. By stacking the Insight-HXMT lightcurves of 66 bursts which have similar profiles and intensities, a hard X-ray shortage is detected with a significance of 15.7 sigma in 30-100 keV. The shortage is about 30% of the persistent flux, which is low compared with other bursters. The shortage fraction is energy-dependent: larger in a higher energy band. These findings make the newly discovered millisecond MAXI J1816-195 a rather peculiar system compared with other millisecond pulsars and atoll bursters. In addition, based on the brightest burst, we derive an upper limit of the distance as 6.3 kpc, and therefore estimate the upper limit of the inner disc radius of the accretion disc to be~ 40 km. Assuming the radius as the magnetospheric radius, the derived magnetic field strength is about 7.1*10^8 G.

Minimizers of $L^{2}$-critical inhomogeneous variational problems with a spatially decaying nonlinearity in bounded domains

We consider the minimizers of $L^{2}$-critical inhomogeneous variational problems with a spatially decaying nonlinear term in an open bounded domain $Ω$ of $\mathbb{R}^{N}$ which contains $0$. We prove that there is a threshold $a^{*}>0$ such that minimizers exist for $0 a^{*}$. In contrast to the homogeneous case, we show that both the existence and nonexistence of minimizers may occur at the threshold $a^*$ depending on the value of $V(0)$, where $V(x)$ denotes the trapping potential. Moreover, under some suitable assumptions on $V(x)$, based on a detailed analysis on the concentration behavior of minimizers as $a\nearrow a^*$, we prove local uniqueness of minimizers when $a$ is close enough to $a^*$.

An Insight-HXMT view of the mHz quasi-regular modulation phenomenon in the black hole X-ray binary 4U 1630-47

Here we report the spectral-timing results of the black hole X-ray binary 4U 1630-47 during its 2021 outburst using observations from the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope. Type-C quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in 1.6--4.2 Hz and quasi-regular modulation (QRM) near 60 mHz are detected during the outburst. The mHz QRM has a fractional rms of 10%--16% in the 8--35 keV energy band with a Q factor (frequency/width) of 2--4. Benefiting from the broad energy band of hxmt, we study the energy dependence of the 60 mHz QRM in 1--100 keV for the first time. We find that the fractional rms of the mHz QRM increases with photon energy, while the time lags of the mHz QRM are soft and decrease with photon energy. Fast recurrence of the mHz QRM, in a timescale of less than one hour, has been observed during the outburst. During this period, the corresponding energy spectra moderately change when the source transitions from the QRM state to the non-QRM state. The QRM phenomena also shows a dependence with the accretion rate. We suggest that the QRM could be caused by an unknown accretion instability aroused from the corona.

The disk wind in GRS 1915+105 as seen by Insight-HXMT

We analyze three observations of GRS 1915+105 in 2017 by Insight-HXMT when the source was in a spectrally soft state. We find strong absorption lines from highly ionized iron, which are due to absorption by disk wind outflowing at a velocity of $\sim$ 1000 km s$^{-1}$ along our line of sight. Two of the three observations show large amplitude oscillation in their light curves and the variation pattern corresponds to state $κ$ of GRS 1915+105. From time-averaged and flux-resolved analysis, we find that the variation of the ionization state of the disk wind follows the X-ray continuum on timescales from hundreds seconds to months. The radial location of the disk wind is consistent with thermal driving. The mass-loss rate due to the outflowing wind is comparable to the mass accretion rate in the inner disk, which demonstrates the important role of the disk wind in the disk accretion system.

Determination of QPO properties in the presence of strong broad-band noise: a case study on the data of MAXI J1820+070

Accurate calculation of the phase lags of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) will provide insight into their origin. In this paper we investigate the phase lag correction method which has been applied to calculate the intrinsic phase lags of the QPOs in MAXI J1820+070. We find that the traditional additive model between BBN and QPOs in the time domain is rejected, but the convolution model is accepted. By introducing a convolution mechanism in the time domain, the Fourier cross-spectrum analysis shows that the phase lags between QPOs components in different energy bands will have a simple linear relationship with the phase lags between the total signals, so that the intrinsic phase lags of the QPOs can be obtained by linear correction. The power density spectrum (PDS) thus requires a multiplicative model to interpret the data. We briefly discuss a physical scenario for interpreting the convolution. In this scenario, the corona acts as a low-pass filter, the Green's function containing the noise is convolved with the QPOs to form the low-frequency part of the PDS, while the high-frequency part requires an additive component. We use a multiplicative PDS model to fit the data observed by Insight-HXMT. The overall fitting results are similar compared to the traditional additive PDS model. Neither the width nor the centroid frequency of the QPOs obtained from each of the two PDS models were significantly different, except for the r.m.s. of the QPOs. Our work thus provides a new perspective on the coupling of noise and QPOs.

Insight-HXMT discovery of the highest energy CRSF from the first Galactic ultra-luminous X-ray pulsar Swift J0243.6+6124

The detection of cyclotron resonance scattering features (CRSFs) is the only way to directly and reliably measure the magnetic field near the surface of a neutron star (NS). The broad energy coverage and large collection area of \emph{Insight}-HXMT in the hard X-ray band allowed us to detect the CRSF with the highest energy known to date, reaching about 146 keV during the 2017 outburst of the first galactic pulsing ultraluminous X-ray source (pULX) Swift J0243.6+6124. During this outburst, the CRSF was only prominent close to the peak luminosity $\sim 2\times10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$, the highest to date in any of the Galactic pulsars. The CRSF is most significant in the spin phase region corresponding to the main pulse of the pulse profile, and its centroid energy evolves with phase from 120 to 146 keV. We identify this feature as the fundamental CRSF, since no spectral feature exists at $60-70$ keV. This is the first unambiguous detection of an electron CRSF from an ULX. We also estimate a surface magnetic field $\sim1.6\times10^{13}$ G for Swift J0243.6+6124. Considering that the dipole magnetic field strengths, inferred from several independent estimates of magnetosphere radius, are at least an order of magnitude lower than our measurement, we argue that the detection of the highest energy CRSF reported here unambiguously proves the presence of multipole field components close to the surface of the neutron star. Such a scenario has previously been suggested for several pulsating ULXs, including Swift J0243.6+6124, and our result represents the first direct confirmation of this scenario.

GRB 210121A: Observation of photospheric emissions from different regimes and the evolution of the outflow

GRB 210121A was observed by Insight-HXMT, Gravitational wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM), Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (Fermi/GBM) on Jan 21st 2021. In this work, photospheric emission from a structured jet is preferred to interpret the prompt emission phase of GRB 210121A and emissions from different regimes are observed on-axis. Particularly, the emission from the intermediate photosphere is first observed in the first 1.3 s of the prompt emission, while those from the other part are dominant by the saturated regime, and offers an alternative explanation compared with the previous work. Moreover, the emissions with considering the intermediate photosphere can well interpret the changes on low-energy photon index $α$ during the pulses. Besides, the evolution of the outflow is extracted from time-resolved analysis, and a correlation of $Γ_0 \propto L^{0.25\pm0.05}_0$ is obtained, which implies that the jet may be mainly launched by neutrino annihilation in a hyper-accretion disk.

Insight-HXMT Study of the Inner Accretion Disk in the Black Hole Candidate EXO 1846--031

We study the spectral evolution of the black hole candidate EXO 1846$-$031 during its 2019 outburst, in the 1--150 keV band, with the {\it {Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope}}. The continuum spectrum is well modelled with an absorbed disk-blackbody plus cutoff power-law, in the hard, intermediate and soft states. In addition, we detect an $\approx$6.6 keV Fe emission line in the hard intermediate state. Throughout the soft intermediate and soft states, the fitted inner disk radius remains almost constant; we suggest that it has settled at the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO). However, in the hard and hard intermediate states, the apparent inner radius was unphysically small (smaller than ISCO), even after accounting for the Compton scattering of some of the disk photons by the corona in the fit. We argue that this is the result of a high hardening factor, $f_{\rm col}\approx2.0-2.7$, in the early phases of outburst evolution, well above the canonical value of 1.7 suitable to a steady disk. We suggest that the inner disk radius was close to ISCO already in the low/hard state. Furthermore, we propose that this high value of hardening factor in the relatively hard state is probably caused by the additional illuminating of the coronal irradiation onto the disk. Additionally, we estimate the spin parameter with the continuum-fitting method, over a range of plausible black hole masses and distances. We compare our results with the spin measured with the reflection-fitting method and find that the inconsistency of the two results is partly caused by the different choices of $f_{\rm col}$.

A generalized model of magnon kinetics and subgap magnetic noise

Magnetic noise spectroscopy provides a noninvasive probe of spin dynamics in magnetic materials. We consider two-dimensional magnetically ordered insulators with magnon excitations, especially those supporting long-distance magnon transport, where nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers enable the access to (nearly) ballistic transport regime of magnons. We develop a generalized theory to describe the magnon transport across a wide range of length scales. The longitudinal dynamic spin susceptibility is derived from the Boltzmann equation and extended to a Lindhard form, which is modified by both the spin-conserving magnon collisions and spin relaxation. Our result is consistent with the diffusive (ballistic) model for the length scale much larger (smaller) than the magnon mean free path, and provides a description for the intermediate regime. We also give a prediction for the NV transition rate in different magnon transport regimes.

Use All The Labels: A Hierarchical Multi-Label Contrastive Learning Framework

Current contrastive learning frameworks focus on leveraging a single supervisory signal to learn representations, which limits the efficacy on unseen data and downstream tasks. In this paper, we present a hierarchical multi-label representation learning framework that can leverage all available labels and preserve the hierarchical relationship between classes. We introduce novel hierarchy preserving losses, which jointly apply a hierarchical penalty to the contrastive loss, and enforce the hierarchy constraint. The loss function is data driven and automatically adapts to arbitrary multi-label structures. Experiments on several datasets show that our relationship-preserving embedding performs well on a variety of tasks and outperform the baseline supervised and self-supervised approaches. Code is available at https://github.com/salesforce/hierarchicalContrastiveLearning.

Rapidly alternating flux states of GX 339-4 during its 2021 outburst captured by Insight-HXMT

The low mass X-ray binary GX 339-4 went into a new outburst in 2021. At the end of the hard to soft transition of this outburst, Insight-HXMT found that the source rapidly alternated between low flux and high flux states on a timescale of hours. Two high flux states lasted only for a period comparable to the orbital period of the observatory. Time-resolved spectral analysis shows that the sudden changes of flux are confined in the hard X-ray band (>4 keV). The variable non-thermal emission, including the power-law continuum from the corona and the reflected emission from the inner accretion disk, is responsible for the observed variability. The strength of disk thermal emission and the inner radius of the accretion disk are consistent between the two flux states. Assuming the lamppost geometry, our best-fit disk reflection models suggest a very low corona height (within 3 $R_{\rm g}$) and there is no evidence of significant variation in the corona geometry either. The observed rapidly alternating flux states suggest that the intrinsic power of the corona must change during the state transition. We discuss possible mechanisms for the observed sudden changes in the coronal power of GX 339-4.
