Benchmarking Egocentric Clinical Intent Understanding Capability for Medical Multimodal Large Language Models

Medical Multimodal Large Language Models (Med-MLLMs) require egocentric clinical intent understanding for real-world deployment, yet existing benchmarks fail to evaluate this critical capability. To address these challenges, we introduce MedGaze-Bench, the first benchmark leveraging clinician gaze as a Cognitive Cursor to assess intent understanding across surgery, emergency simulation, and diagnostic interpretation. Our benchmark addresses three fundamental challenges: visual homogeneity of anatomical structures, strict temporal-causal dependencies in clinical workflows, and implicit adherence to safety protocols. We propose a Three-Dimensional Clinical Intent Framework evaluating: (1) Spatial Intent: discriminating precise targets amid visual noise, (2) Temporal Intent: inferring causal rationale through retrospective and prospective reasoning, and (3) Standard Intent: verifying protocol compliance through safety checks. Beyond accuracy metrics, we introduce Trap QA mechanisms to stress-test clinical reliability by penalizing hallucinations and cognitive sycophancy. Experiments reveal current MLLMs struggle with egocentric intent due to over-reliance on global features, leading to fabricated observations and uncritical acceptance of invalid instructions.

Kitaev interactions in the van der Waals antiferromagnet VBr3

Van der Waals materials hosting Kitaev interactions are promising platforms for exploring exotic quantum phenomena. Here, we report inelastic neutron scattering investigations of the van der Waals antiferromagnet VBr3, which forms a honeycomb lattice structure at room temperature and exhibits zigzag-type magnetic order below 26.5 K. Our observations reveal distinctive low-energy spin excitations arising from gamma, gamma', and M' points, each featuring a spin gap of around 2.5 meV. The overall spin excitation spectra can be effectively described by a spin Hamiltonian incorporating substantial nearest-neighbor Kitaev and biquadratic interactions, along with Heisenberg interactions. Our findings not only establish VBr3 as a new Kitaev magnet but also suggest that ligand engineering may provide a promising strategy to modulate Kitaev interactions, offering new opportunities for designing Kitaev materials with tailored quantum properties.

Medical Reasoning in the Era of LLMs: A Systematic Review of Enhancement Techniques and Applications

The proliferation of Large Language Models (LLMs) in medicine has enabled impressive capabilities, yet a critical gap remains in their ability to perform systematic, transparent, and verifiable reasoning, a cornerstone of clinical practice. This has catalyzed a shift from single-step answer generation to the development of LLMs explicitly designed for medical reasoning. This paper provides the first systematic review of this emerging field. We propose a taxonomy of reasoning enhancement techniques, categorized into training-time strategies (e.g., supervised fine-tuning, reinforcement learning) and test-time mechanisms (e.g., prompt engineering, multi-agent systems). We analyze how these techniques are applied across different data modalities (text, image, code) and in key clinical applications such as diagnosis, education, and treatment planning. Furthermore, we survey the evolution of evaluation benchmarks from simple accuracy metrics to sophisticated assessments of reasoning quality and visual interpretability. Based on an analysis of 60 seminal studies from 2022-2025, we conclude by identifying critical challenges, including the faithfulness-plausibility gap and the need for native multimodal reasoning, and outlining future directions toward building efficient, robust, and sociotechnically responsible medical AI.

Lattice and magnetic structure in the van der Waals antiferromagnet VBr3

We report a comprehensive investigation of the lattice and magnetic structure in van der Waals antiferromagnet VBr3, characterized by a BiI3-type structure at room temperature. Neutron diffraction experiments were performed on both polycrystalline and single-crystalline VBr3 samples, revealing clear magnetic Bragg peaks emerging below the N\'eel temperature of TN = 26.5 K. These magnetic Bragg peaks can be indexed by k = (0, 0.5, 1) in hexagonal notation. Our refinement analysis suggests that the antiferromagnetic order in VBr3 manifests as a zigzag structure. Moreover, we observed peak splitting for nuclear Bragg peaks in the HK-plane below the structure transition temperature of Ts = 94 K, indicating the breaking of 3-fold symmetry within the ab-plane.

On the calculation of upper variance under multiple probabilities

The notion of upper variance under multiple probabilities is defined by a corresponding minimax optimization problem. This paper proposes a simple algorithm to solve the related minimax optimization problem exactly. As an application, we provide the probabilistic representation for a class of quadratic programming problems.

Exchange renormalized crystal field excitation in a quantum Ising magnet KTmSe$_2$

Rare-earth delafossite compounds, ARCh$_2$ (A = alkali or monovalent ion, R = rare earth, Ch = chalcogen), have been proposed for a range of novel quantum phenomena. Particularly, the Tm series, ATmCh$_2$, featuring Tm ions on a triangular lattice, serves as a representative group of compounds to illustrate the interplay and competition between spin-orbit coupling, crystal fields, and exchange couplings in the presence of geometric frustration. Here we report the thermodynamic and inelastic neutron scattering studies on the newly discovered triangular-lattice magnet KTmSe$_2$. Both heat capacity and neutron diffraction reveal the absence of long-range magnetic order. Magnetic susceptibility shows strong Ising-like interactions with antiferromagnetic correlations. Furthermore, inelastic neutron scattering measurements reveal a branch of dispersive crystal field excitations. To analyze these observations, we employ both the transverse field Ising model and the full crystal field scheme, along with exchange interactions. Our results suggest a strong competition between spin exchange interactions and crystal field effects. This work is expected to offer a valuable framework for understanding low-temperature magnetism in KTmSe$_2$ and similar materials.

Antiferromagnetic Kondo lattice compound CePt$_{3}$P

A new ternary platinum phosphide CePt$_{3}$P was synthesized and characterized by means of magnetic, thermodynamic and transport measurements. The compound crystallizes in an antiperovskite tetragonal structure similar to that in the canonical family of platinum-based superconductors $A$Pt$_{3}$P ($A$ = Sr, Ca, La) and closely related to the noncentrosymmetric heavy fermion superconductor CePt$_{3}$Si. In contrast to all the superconducting counterparts, however, no superconductivity is observed in CePt$_{3}$P down to 0.5 K. Instead, CePt$_{3}$P displays a coexistence of antiferromagnetic ordering, Kondo effect and crystalline electric field effect. A field-induced spin-flop transition is observed below the magnetic ordering temperature $T_{N1}$ of 3.0 K while the Kondo temperature is of similar magnitude as $T_{N1}$. The obtained Sommerfeld coefficient of electronic specific heat is ${\gamma}_{Ce}$ = 86 mJ/molK$^{2}$ indicating that CePt$_{3}$P is a moderately correlated antiferromagnetic Kondo lattice compound.
