Constraints on braneworld inflation from CMB anisotropies

We obtain observational constraints on Randall--Sundrum type II braneworld inflation using a compilation of data including WMAP, the 2dF and latest SDSS galaxy redshift surveys. We place constraints on three classes of inflation models (large-field, small-field and hybrid models) in the high-energy regime, which exhibit different behaviour compared to the low-energy case. The quartic potential is outside the $2σ$ observational contour bound for a number of $e$-folds less than 60, and steep inflation driven by an exponential potential is excluded because of its high tensor-to-scalar ratio. It is more difficult to strongly constrain small-field and hybrid models due to additional freedoms associated with the potentials, but we obtain upper bounds for the energy scale of inflation and the model parameters in certain cases. We also discuss possible ways to break the degeneracy of consistency relations and inflationary observables.

Density perturbations in generalized Einstein scenarios and constraints on nonminimal couplings from the Cosmic Microwave Background

We study cosmological perturbations in generalized Einstein scenarios and show the equivalence of inflationary observables both in the Jordan frame and the Einstein frame. In particular the consistency relation relating the tensor-to-scalar ratio with the spectral index of tensor perturbations coincides with the one in Einstein gravity, which leads to the same likelihood results in terms of inflationary observables. We apply this formalism to nonminimally coupled chaotic inflationary scenarios with potential $V=cϕ^p$ and place constraints on the strength of nonminimal couplings using a compilation of latest observational data. In the case of the quadratic potential ($p=2$), the nonminimal coupling is constrained to be $ξ>-7.0 \times 10^{-3}$ for negative $ξ$ from the $1σ$ observational contour bound. Although the quartic potential ($p=4$) is under a strong observational pressure for $ξ=0$, this property is relaxed by taking into account negative nonminimal couplings. We find that inflationary observables are within the $1σ$ contour bound as long as $ξ<-1.7 \times 10^{-3}$. We also show that the $p \ge 6$ cases are disfavoured even in the presence of nonminimal couplings.

Inflation in string-inspired cosmology and suppression of CMB low multipoles

We construct a string-inspired nonsingular cosmological scenario in which an inflaton field is driven up the potential before the graceful exit by employing a low-energy string effective action with an orbifold compactification. This sets up an initial condition for the inflaton to lead to a sufficient amount of $e$-foldings and to generate a nearly scale-invariant primordial density perturbation during slow-roll inflation. Our scenario provides an interesting possibility to explain a suppressed power spectrum at low multipoles due to the presence of the modulus-driven phase prior to slow-roll inflation and thus can leave a strong imprint of extra dimensions in observed CMB anisotropies.

Non-commutative inflation and the CMB

Non-commutative inflation is a modification of standard general relativity inflation which takes into account some effects of the space-time uncertainty principle motivated by ideas from string theory. The corrections to the primordial power spectrum which arise in a model of power-law inflation lead to a suppression of power on large scales, and produce a spectral index that is blue on large scales and red on small scales. This suppression and running of the spectral index are not imposed ad hoc, but arise from an early-Universe stringy phenomenology. We show that it can account for some loss of power on the largest scales that may be indicated by recent WMAP data. Cosmic microwave background anisotropies carry a signature of these very early Universe corrections, and can be used to place constraints on the parameters appearing in the non-commutative model. Applying a likelihood analysis to the WMAP data, we find the best-fit value for the critical wavenumber k_* (which involves the string scale) and for the exponent p (which determines the power-law inflationary expansion). The best-fit value corresponds to a string length of L_s \sim 10^{-28} cm.

Cosmological density perturbations from perturbed couplings

The density perturbations generated when the inflaton decay rate is perturbed by a light scalar field $χ$ are studied. By explicitly solving the perturbation equations for the system of two scalar fields and radiation, we show that even in low energy-scale inflation nearly scale-invariant spectra of scalar perturbations with an amplitude set by observations are obtained through the conversion of $χ$ fluctuations into adiabatic density perturbations. We demonstrate that the spectra depend on the average decay rate of the inflaton & on the inflaton fluctuations. We then apply this new mechanism to string cosmologies & generalized Einstein theories and discuss the conditions under which scale-invariant spectra are possible.

Construction of nonsingular cosmological solutions in string theories

We study nonsingular cosmological scenarios in a general $D$-dimensional string effective action of the dilaton-modulus-axion system in the presence of the matter source. In the standard dilatonic Brans-Dicke parameter ($ω=-1$) with radiation, we analytically obtain singularity-free bouncing solutions where the universe starts out in a state with a finite curvature and evolves toward the weakly coupled regime. We apply this analytic method to the string-gas cosmology including the massive state in addition to the leading massless state (radiation), with and without the axion. We numerically find bouncing solutions which asymptotically approach an almost radiation-dominant universe with a decreasing curvature irrespective of the presence of the axion, implying that inclusion of the matter source is crucial for the existence of such solutions for $ω=-1$. In the theories with $ω\ne -1$, it is possible to obtain complete regular bouncing solutions with a finite dilaton and curvature in both past and future asymptotics for the general dimension, $D$. We also discuss the case where dilatonic higher-order corrections are involved to the tree-level effective action and demonstrate that the presence of axion/modulus fields and the matter source does not significantly affect the dynamics of the dilaton-driven inflation and the subsequent graceful exit.

Correlation-consistency cartography of the double inflation landscape

We show explicitly some exciting features of double-inflation: (i) it can often lead to strongly correlated adiabatic and entropy (isocurvature) power spectra. (ii) The two-field slow-roll consistency relations can be violated when the correlation is large at Hubble crossing. (iii) The spectra of adiabatic and entropy perturbations can be strongly scale-dependent and tilted toward either the red or blue. These effects are typically due to a light or time-dependent entropy mass and a non-negligible angular velocity in field space during inflation. They are illustrated via a multi-parameter numerical search for correlations in two concrete models. The correlation is found to be particularly strong in a supersymmetric scenario due to rapid growth of entropy perturbations in the tachyonic region separating the two inflationary stages. Our analysis suggests that realistic double-inflation models will provide a rich and fruitful arena for the application of future cosmic data sets and new approximation schemes which go beyond slow-roll.

Aspects of String-Gas Cosmology at Finite Temperature

We study string-gas cosmology in dilaton gravity, inspired by the fact that it naturally arises in a string theory context. Our main interest is the thermodynamical treatment of the string-gas and the resulting implications for the cosmology. Within an adiabatic approximation, thermodynamical equilibrium and a small, toroidal universe as initial conditions, we numerically solve the corresponding equations of motions in two different regimes describing the string-gas thermodynamics: (i) the Hagedorn regime, with a single scale factor, and (ii) an almost-radiation dominated regime, which includes the leading corrections due to the lightest Kaluza Klein and winding modes, with two scale factors. The scale factor in the Hagedorn regime exhibits very slow time evolution with nearly constant energy and negligible pressure. By contrast, in case (ii) we find interesting cosmological solutions where the large dimensions continue to expand and the small ones are kept undetectably small.

On the Construction of Nonsingular Pre-Big-Bang and Ekpyrotic Cosmologies and the Resulting Density Perturbations

We consider the construction of nonsingular Pre-Big-Bang and Ekpyrotic type cosmological models realized by the addition to the action of specific higher-order terms stemming from quantum corrections. We study models involving general relativity coupled to a single scalar field with a potential motivated by the Ekpyrotic scenario. We find that the inclusion of the string loop and quantum correction terms in the string frame makes it possible to obtain solutions of the variational equations which are nonsingular and bouncing in the Einstein frame, even when a negative exponential potential is present, as is the case in the Ekpyrotic scenario. We analyze the spectra of perturbations produced during the bouncing phase and find that the spectrum of curvature fluctuations in the model proposed originally to implement the Ekpyrotic scenario has a large blue tilt ($n_R= 3$). Except for instabilities introduced on small scales, the result agrees with what is obtained by imposing continuity of the induced metric and of the extrinsic curvature across a constant scalar field (up to $k^2$ corrections equal to the constant energy density) matching surface between the contracting and the expanding Einstein Universes. We also discuss nonsingular cosmological solutions obtained when a Gauss-Bonnet term with a coefficient suitably dependent on the scalar matter field is added to the action in the Einstein frame with a potential for the scalar field present.

When can preheating affect the CMB?

We discuss the principles governing the selection of inflationary models for which preheating can affect the CMB. This is a (fairly small) subset of those models which have non-negligible entropy/isocurvature perturbations on large scales during inflation. We study new models which belong to this class - two-field inflation with negative nonminimal coupling and hybrid/double/supernatural inflation models where the tachyonic growth of entropy perturbations can lead to the variation of the curvature perturbation, ${\cal R}$, on super-Hubble scales. Finally we present evidence against recent claims for the variation of ${\cal R}$ in the absence of substantial super-Hubble entropy perturbations.

Nature of singularities in anisotropic string cosmology

We study nature of singularities in anisotropic string-inspired cosmological models in the presence of a Gauss-Bonnet term. We analyze two string gravity models-- dilaton-driven and modulus-driven cases-- in the Bianchi type-I background without an axion field. In both scenarios singularities can be classified in two ways- the determinant singularity where the main determinant of the system vanishes and the ordinary singularity where at least one of the anisotropic expansion rates of the Universe diverges. In the dilaton case, either of these singularities inevitably appears during the evolution of the system. In the modulus case, nonsingular cosmological solutions exist both in asymptotic past and future with determinant $D=+\infty$ and D=2, respectively. In both scenarios nonsingular trajectories in either future or past typically meet the determinant singularity in past/future when the solutions are singular, apart from the exceptional case where the sign of the time-derivative of dilaton is negative. This implies that the determinant singularity may play a crucial role to lead to singular solutions in an anisotropic background.

Density perturbations in the Ekpyrotic Universe and string-inspired generalizations

We study density perturbations in several cosmological models motivated by string theory. The evolution and the spectra of curvature perturbations ${\cal R}$ are analyzed in the Ekpyrotic scenario and nonsingular string cosmologies. We find that these string-inspired models generally exhibit blue spectra in contrast to standard slow-roll inflationary scenarios. We also clarify the parameter range where ${\cal R}$ is enhanced on superhorizon scales.

Fermion production from preheating-amplified metric perturbations

We study gravitational creation of light fermions in the presence of classical scalar metric perturbations about a flat Friedmann-Lemaitre- Robertson-Walker (FLRW) background. These perturbations can be large during preheating, breaking the conformal flatness of the background spacetime. We compute numerically the total number of particles generated by the modes of the metric perturbations which have grown sufficiently to become classical. In the absence of inhomogeneities massless fermions are not gravitationally produced, and then this effect may be relevant for abundance estimates of light gravitational relics.

Cosmological perturbations from multi-field inflation in generalized Einstein theories

We study cosmological perturbations generated from quantum fluctuations in multi-field inflationary scenarios in generalized Einstein theories, taking both adiabatic and isocurvature modes into account. In the slow-roll approximation, explicit closed-form long-wave solutions for field and metric perturbations are obtained by the analysis in the Einstein frame. Since the evolution of fluctuations depends on specific gravity theories, we make detailed investigations based on analytic and numerical approaches in four generalized Einstein theories: the Jordan-Brans-Dicke (JBD) theory, the Einstein gravity with a non-minimally coupled scalar field, the higher-dimensional Kaluza-Klein theory, and the $R+R^2$ theory with a non-minimally coupled scalar field. We find that solutions obtained in the slow-roll approximation show good agreement with full numerical results except around the end of inflation. Due to the presence of isocurvature perturbations, the gravitational potential $Φ$ and the curvature perturbations ${\cal R}$ and $ζ$ do not remain constant on super-horizon scales. In particular, we find that negative non-minimal coupling can lead to strong enhancement of ${\cal R}$ in both the Einstein and higher derivative gravity, in which case it is difficult to unambiguously decompose scalar perturbations into adiabatic and isocurvature modes during the whole stage of inflation.

Massive fermion production in nonsingular superstring cosmology

We study massive spin-1/2 fermion production in nonsingular superstring cosmology, taking into account one-loop quantum corrections to a superstring effective action with dilaton and modulus fields. While no creation occurs in the massless limit, massive fermions can be produced by the existence of a time-dependent frequency. Due to the increase of the Hubble expansion rate during the modulus-driven phase, the occupation of number of fermions continues to grow until the point of the graceful exit, after which fermion creation ceases with the decrease of the Hubble rate.

Preheating - cosmic magnetic dynamo ?

We study the amplification of large-scale magnetic fields during preheating and inflation in several different models. Preheating can resonantly amplify seed fields on cosmological scales. In the presence of conductivity, however, the effect of resonance is typically weakened while the amplitude of produced magnetic fields depends sensitively on the evolution of the conductivity during the preheating and thermalisation phases. In addition we discuss geometric magnetisation, where amplification of magnetic fields occurs through coupling to curvature invariants. This can be efficient during inflation due to a negative coupling instability. Finally we discuss the breaking of the conformal flatness of the background metric whereby magnetic fields can be stimulated through the growth of scalar metric perturbations during metric preheating.

Inflationary preheating and primordial black holes

Preheating after inflation may over-produce primordial black holes (PBH's) in many regions of parameter space. As an example we study two-field models with a massless self-interacting inflaton, taking into account second order field and metric backreaction effects as spatial averages. We find that a complex quilt of parameter regions above the Gaussian PBH over-production threshold emerges due to the enhancement of curvature perturbations on all scales. It should be possible to constrain realistic models of inflation through PBH over-production although many issues, such as rescattering and non-Gaussianity, remain unsolved or unexplored.
