We apply our earlier results on Fourier-Mukai partners to answer definitively a question about Kummer surface structures, posed by T. Shioda 25 years ago.
We study a static, spherically symmetric system of (2j+1) massive Dirac particles, each having angular momentum j, j=1,2,..., in a classical gravitational and SU(2) Yang-Mills field. We show that for any black hole solution of the associated Einstein-Dirac-Yang/Mills equations, the spinors must vanish identically outside of the event horizon.
We argue that G_2 manifolds for M-theory admitting string theory Calabi-Yau duals are fibered by coassociative submanifolds. Dual theories are constructed using the moduli space of M5-brane fibers as target space. Mirror symmetry and various string and M-theory dualities involving G_2 manifolds may be incorporated into this framework. To give some examples, we construct two non-compact manifolds with G_2 structures: one with a K3 fibration, and one with a torus fibration and a metric of G_2 holonomy. Kaluza-Klein reduction of the latter solution gives abelian BPS monopoles in 3+1 dimensions.
In this paper, we observe that the brane functional studied in hep-th/9910245 can be used to generalize some of the works that Schoen and I [4] did many years ago. The key idea is that if a three dimensional manifold M has a boundary with strongly positive mean curvature, the effect of this mean curvature can influence the internal geometry of M. For example, if the scalar curvature of M is greater than certain constant related to this boundary effect, no incompressible surface of higher genus can exist.
We consider autoequivalences of the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on a K3 surface. We prove that the image of the autoequivalences has index at most two in the group of the Hodge isometries of the Mukai lattice. Motivated by homological mirror symmetry we also consider the mirror counterpart, i.e. symplectic version of it. In the case of $ρ(X)=1$, we find an explicit formula which reproduces the number of Fourier-Mukai (FM) partners from the monodromy problem of the mirror K3 family. We present an explicit example in which a monodromy action does not come from an autoequivalence of the mirror side.
The Cauchy problem is considered for the massive Dirac equation in the non-extreme Kerr-Newman geometry, for smooth initial data with compact support outside the event horizon and bounded angular momentum. We prove that the Dirac wave function decays in L^\infty_loc at least at the rate t^{-5/6}. For generic initial data, this rate of decay is sharp. We derive a formula for the probability p that the Dirac particle escapes to infinity. For various conditions on the initial data, we show that p=0,1 or 0<p<1. The proofs are based on a refined analysis of the Dirac propagator constructed in gr-qc/0005088.
We describe the $S^1$-action on the Quot-scheme $\Quot({\cal E}^n)$ associated to the trivial bundle ${\cal E}^n=CP^1\times{\smallBbb C}^n$. In particlular, the topology of the $S^1$-fixed-point components in $\Quot({\cal E}^n)$ and the $S^1$-weights of the normal bundle of these components are worked out. Mirror Principle, as developed by three of the current authors in the series of work [L-L-Y1, I, II, III, IV], is a method for studying certain intersection numbers on a stable map moduli space. As an application, in Mirror Principle III, Sec 5.4, an outline was given in the case of genus zero with target a flag manifold. The results on $S^1$ fixed points in this paper are used here to do explicit Mirror Principle computations in the case of Grassmannian manifolds. In fact, Mirror Principle computations involve only a certain distinguished subcollection of the $S^1$-fixed-point components. These components are identified and are labelled by Young tableaus. The $S^1$-equivariant Euler class $e_{S^1}$ of the normal bundle to these components is computed. A diagrammatic rule that allows one to write down $e_{S^1}$ directly from the Young tableau is given. From this, the aforementioned intersection numbers on the moduli space of stable maps can be worked out. Two examples are given to illustrate our method. Using our method, the A-model for Calabi-Yau complete intersections in a Grassmannian manifold can now also be computed explicitly. This work is motivated by the intention to provide further details of mirror principle and to understand the relation to physical theory. Some related questions are listed for further study.
Fibrewise T-duality (Fourier-Mukai transform) for D-branes on an elliptic Calabi-Yau $X$ is shown to require naturally an appropriate twisting of the operation respectively a twisted charge. The fibrewise T-duality is furthermore expressed through known monodromies in the context of Kontsevich's interpretation of mirror symmetry.
Fibrewise T-duality (Fourier-Mukai transform) for D-branes on an elliptic Calabi-Yau three-fold $X$ is seen to have an expected adiabatic form for its induced cohomology operation only when an appropriately twisted operation resp. twisted charge is defined. Some differences with the case of $K3$ as well as connections with the spectral cover construction for bundles on $X$ are pointed out. In the context of mirror symmetry Kontsevich's association of line bundle twists (resp. a certain 'diagonal' operation) with monodromies (esp. the conifold monodromy) is made explicit and checked for two example models. Interpreting this association as a relation between FM transforms and monodromies, we express the fibrewise FM transform through known monodromies. The operation of fibrewise duality as well as the notion of a certain index relevant to the computation of the moduli space of the bundle is transported to the sLag side. Finally the moduli space for D4-branes and its behaviour under the FM transform is considered with an application to the spectral cover.
This note briefly reviews the {\it Mirror Principle} as developed in the series of papers \LLYI\LLYII\LLYIII\LLYIV\LCHY. We illustrate this theory with a few new examples. One of them gives an intriguing connection to a problem of counting holomorphic disks and annuli. This note has been submitted for the proceedings of the Workshop on Strings, Duality and Geometry the C.R.M. in Montreal of March 2000.
The computations that are suggested by String Theory in the B model requires the existence of degenerations of CY manifolds with maximum unipotent monodromy. In String Theory such a point in the moduli space is called a large radius limit (or large complex structure limit). In this paper we are going to construct one parameter families of $n$ dimensional Calabi-Yau manifolds, which are complete intersections in toric varieties and which have a monodromy operator $T$ such that (T$^{N}-id)^{n+1}=0$ but (T$^{N}-id)^{n}\neq0,$ i.e the monodromy operator is maximal unipotent.
We consider a spherically symmetric, static system of a Dirac particle interacting with classical gravity and an SU(2) Yang-Mills field. The corresponding Einstein-Dirac-Yang/Mills equations are derived. Using numerical methods, we find different types of soliton-like solutions of these equations and discuss their properties. Some of these solutions are stable even for arbitrarily weak gravitational coupling.
We consider a static, spherically symmetric system of a Dirac particle in a classical gravitational and SU(2) Yang-Mills field. We prove that the only black-hole solutions of the corresponding Einstein-Dirac-Yang/Mills equations are the Bartnik-McKinnon black-hole solutions of the SU(2) Einstein-Yang/Mills equations; thus the spinors must vanish identically. This indicates that the Dirac particles must either disappear into the black-hole or escape to infinity.
We prove that, in the non-extreme Kerr-Newman black hole geometry, the Dirac equation has no normalizable, time-periodic solutions. A key tool is Chandrasekhar's separation of the Dirac equation in this geometry. A similar non-existence theorem is established in a more general class of stationary, axisymmetric metrics in which the Dirac equation is known to be separable. These results indicate that, in contrast with the classical situation of massive particle orbits, a quantum mechanical Dirac particle must either disappear into the black hole or escape to infinity.
We exhibit a transformation taking special Lagrangian submanifolds of a Calabi-Yau together with local systems to vector bundles over the mirror manifold with connections obeying deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills equations. That is, the transformation relates supersymmetric A- and B-cycles. In this paper, we assume that the mirror pair are dual torus fibrations with flat tori and that the A-cycle is a section. We also show that this transformation preserves the (holomorphic) Chern-Simons functional for all connections. Furthermore, on corresponding moduli spaces of supersymmetric cycles it identifies the graded tangent spaces and the holomorphic m-forms. In particular, we verify Vafa's mirror conjecture with bundles in this special case.
We apply the mirror principle of [L-L-Y] to reconstruct the Euler data $Q=\{Q_d\}_{d\in{\tinyBbb N}\cup\{0\}}$ associated to a vector bundle $V$ on ${\smallBbb C}{\rm P}^n$ and a multiplicative class $b$. This gives a direct way to compute the intersection number $K_d$ without referring to any other Euler data linked to $Q$. Here $K_d$ is the integral of the cohomology class $b(V_d)$ of the induced bundle $V_d$ on a stable map moduli space. A package '{\tt \verb+EulerData_MP.m+}' in Maple V that carries out the actual computation is provided. For $b$ the Chern polynomial, the computation of $K_1$ for the bundle $V=T_{\ast}{\smallBbb C}{\rm P}^2$, and $K_d$, $d=1,2,3$, for the bundles ${\cal O}_{{\tinyBbb C}{\rm P}^4}(l)$ with $6\le l\le 10$ done using the code are also included.
From the work of Lian, Liu, and Yau on "Mirror Principle", in the explicit computation of the Euler data $Q=\{Q_0, Q_1, ... \}$ for an equivariant concavex bundle ${\cal E}$ over a toric manifold, there are two places the structure of the bundle comes into play: (1) the multiplicative characteric class $Q_0$ of $V$ one starts with, and (2) the splitting type of ${\cal E}$. Equivariant bundles over a toric manifold has been classified by Kaneyama, using data related to the linearization of the toric action on the base toric manifold. In this article, we relate the splitting type of ${\cal E}$ to the classifying data of Kaneyama. From these relations, we compute the splitting type of a couple of nonsplittable equivariant vector bundles over toric manifolds that may be of interest to string theory and mirror symmetry. A code in Mathematica that carries out the computation of some of these examples is attached.
