Analytical solution of the Schrödinger equation with $1/r^3$ and attractive $1/r^2$ potentials: Universal three-body parameter of mixed-dimensional Efimov states

We study the Schrödinger equation with $1/r^3$ and attractive $1/r^2$ potentials. Using the quantum defect theory, we obtain analytical solutions for both repulsive and attractive $1/r^3$ interactions. The obtained discrete-scale-invariant energies and wave functions, validated by excellent agreement with numerical results, provide a natural framework for describing the universality of Efimov states in mixed dimension. Specifically, we consider a three-body system consisting of two heavy particles with large dipole moments confined to a quasi-one-dimensional geometry and resonantly interacting with an unconfined light particle. With the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, this system is effectively reduced to the Schrödinger equation with $1/r^3$ and $1/r^2$ potentials, and manifests the Efimov effect. Our analytical solution suggests that, for repulsive dipole interactions, the three-body parameter of the mixed-dimensional Efimov states is universally set by the dipolar length scale, whereas for attractive interactions it explicitly depends on the short-range phase. We also investigate the effects of finite transverse confinement and find that our analytical results are useful for describing the Efimov states composed of two polar molecules and a light atom.

Probing Near-Threshold $s$-Wave Components in Heavy Nuclei via Coulomb-Assisted Neutron Transfer

We propose a method to probe weakly bound s-wave neutron components near the neutron emission threshold in heavy nuclei using Coulomb-assisted neutron transfer reactions. Weakly bound s-wave neutrons have large asymptotic amplitudes, which are difficult to access directly with conventional methods. This work focuses on the $(d,p)$ reaction at low incident energies and backward angles, where the reaction is localized in the nuclear exterior due to the Coulomb barrier. Under these conditions, the transition amplitude becomes sensitive to the asymptotic part of the single-particle wave function. Finite-range DWBA calculations show that the cross section for weakly bound states exhibits a weak dependence on incident energy, while that for strongly bound states decreases rapidly with decreasing energy. Contributions from orbitals with $l \geq 1$ are suppressed by the centrifugal barrier, resulting in selectivity for s-wave components. This method provides a probe of the strength distribution of weakly bound s-wave components near threshold and the asymptotic structure of their wave functions.

Dynamics of entanglement asymmetry for space-inversion symmetry of free fermions on honeycomb lattices

We study the entanglement asymmetry for the space-inversion symmetry of free fermions on a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice with an on-site energy imbalance between the two sublattices. We show that the entanglement asymmetry of a local subsystem exhibits nonanalytic dependence on the energy imbalance, due to the presence of Dirac points in the Brillouin zone. We also study the quench dynamics from the ground state into the inversion-symmetric point at which the energy imbalance vanishes. Under certain conditions on the subsystem geometry, the entanglement asymmetry relaxes to a finite value after the quench, revealing that the inversion-symmetry breaking in the initial ground state can persist even under the symmetric dynamics. We attribute the absence of symmetry restoration to the presence of a flat energy dispersion (flat band) in a specific direction.

Neural-network quantum states for solving few-body problems: application to Efimov physics

Neural-network quantum states have recently emerged as a powerful method for solving quantum many-body problems, with notable successes in lattice systems. Here, we extend this approach to strongly interacting few-body problems in continuous space, and demonstrate its capability by computing the Efimov states and associated few-body bound states. Using a fully connected feedforward neural network with Jacobi coordinates as inputs, combined with a projection method, we compute the ground and first excited states for three- to six-body systems of identical bosons at unitarity, as well as a mass-imbalanced fermionic system consisting of two identical fermions and a third particle. The obtained energies of the ground and first excited states agree well with previously reported results. Furthermore, the proposed approach also reproduces key features of Efimov states, including the discrete scale invariance, the characteristic geometric structure of the wave function, and the critical-mass behavior in mass-imbalanced fermionic systems. Our method can be readily applied to a broad class of strongly correlated few-body problems in continuous space.

Complex-valued in-medium potential between heavy impurities in ultracold atoms

We formulate the induced potential in a finite temperature cold atomic medium between two heavy impurities, or polarons, which is shown to be \textit{complex-valued} in general. The imaginary part of the complex-valued potential describes a decoherence effect, and thus, the resulting Schrödinger equation for the two polarons acquires a non-Hermitian term. We apply the developed formulation to two representative cases of polarons interacting with medium particles through the $s$-wave contact interaction: (i) the normal phase of single-component (i.e., spin-polarized) fermions using the fermionic field theory, and (ii) a superfluid phase using the superfluid effective field theory, which is valid either for a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of a single-component Bose gas or for the BEC-BCS crossover in two-component fermions at a low-energy regime. Computing the leading-order term, the imaginary part of the potential in both cases is found to show a universal $r^{-2}$ behavior at long distance. We propose three experimental ways to observe the effects of the universal imaginary potential in cold atoms.

Quantum Fisher Information as a Measure of Symmetry Breaking in Quantum Many-Body Systems

Symmetry breaking underlies diverse phenomena from phase transitions in condensed matter to fundamental interactions in gauge theories. Despite many proposed indicators, a general quantification of symmetry breaking that is faithful, computable, and valid in the thermodynamic limit has remained elusive. Here, within quantum resource theory, we propose the quantum Fisher information (QFI) as such a measure. We demonstrate its utility by computing QFI for paradigmatic models: in the BCS superconductor, the QFI counts the number of Cooper pairs; in the transverse-field XY spin chains, it captures topological phase transition that has no local order parameter; and in quantum quench dynamics, it allows us to exactly derive the microscopic origin and conditions of the quantum Mpemba effect in terms of excitation propagation, including in the thermodynamic limit--beyond the reach of previous analyses. Our results show that the QFI, which is a complete resource monotone in the resource theory of asymmetry that plays the role of entanglement entropy in entanglement theory, faithfully captures symmetry breaking in condensed-matter systems. These results highlight the QFI as a universal and physically meaningful diagnostic of symmetry breaking in both equilibrium and non-equilibrium quantum many-body systems.

Universal Efimov spectra and fermionic doublets in highly mass-imbalanced cold-atom mixtures with van der Waals and dipole interactions

We study the Efimov states in highly mass-imbalanced three-body systems composed of two identical heavy atoms and one light atom, focusing on the Er-Er-Li and Dy-Dy-Li cold-atom mixtures with strong dipole-dipole interactions between the heavy atoms. By solving the Born-Oppenheimer equation for varying $s$-wave scattering lengths between the heavy and light atoms, we demonstrate for both bosonic and fermionic systems that the Efimov spectra and hence the three-body parameters are universal even with the dipole interaction comparable in strength to the van der Waals interaction. While the bosonic systems exhibit Efimov states only in the $M_z=0$ channel, the fermionic systems show a characteristic doublet of the Efimov states in the $M_z=0$ and $M_z = \pm 1$ channels due to the interplay of finite angular momentum and the anisotropy of the dipole interaction. Both numerical results and analytical formula obtained with the first-order perturbation show that the ratio of the three-body parameters between these two fermionic channels exhibits universality, particularly well in the limit of large mass imbalance. Leveraging this universality, we provide quantitative predictions for the values and ratios of the three-body parameters for experimentally relevant Er-Li and Dy-Li isotopes.

Dynamical invariant based shortcut to equilibration in open quantum systems

We propose using the dynamical invariant also known as the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant, to speed-up the equilibration of a driven open quantum system. This allows us to reverse engineer the time-dependent master equation that describes the dynamics of the open quantum system and systematically derive a protocol that realizes a shortcut to equilibration. The method does not require additional constraints on the timescale of the dynamics beside the Born-Markov approximation and can be generically applied to boost single particle quantum engines significantly. We demonstrate it with the damped harmonic oscillator, and show that our protocol can achieve a high-fidelity control in shorter timescales than simple non-optimized protocols. We find that the system is heated during the dynamics to speed-up the equilibration, which can be considered as an analogue of the Mpemba effect in quantum control.

Three-body forces and Efimov physics in nuclei and atoms

This review article presents historical developments and recent advances in our understanding on the three-body forces and Efimov physics, from an interdisciplinary viewpoint encompassing nuclear physics and cold atoms. Theoretical attempts to elucidate the three-body force with the chiral effective field theory are explained, followed by an overview of experiments aimed at observing signatures of the nuclear three-body force. Some recent experimental and theoretical works in the field of cold atoms devoted to measuring and engineering three-body forces among atoms are also presented. As a phenomenon arising from the three-body effect, Efimov physics in both cold atoms and nuclear systems is reviewed.

The interaction-sensitive states of a trapped two-component ideal Fermi gas and application to the virial expansion of the unitary Fermi gas

We consider a two-component ideal Fermi gas in an isotropic harmonic potential. Some eigenstates have a wavefunction that vanishes when two distinguishable fermions are at the same location, and would be unaffected by s-wave contact interactions between the two components. We determine the other, interaction-sensitive eigenstates, using a Faddeev ansatz. This problem is nontrivial, due to degeneracies and to the existence of unphysical Faddeev solutions. As an application we present a new conjecture for the fourth-order cluster or virial coefficient of the unitary Fermi gas, in good agreement with the numerical results of Blume and coworkers.

Universality of Efimov states in highly mass-imbalanced cold-atom mixtures with van der Waals and dipole interactions

We study three-body systems in a mass-imbalanced two-component cold-atom mixture, and we investigate the three-body parameter of their Efimov states for both bosonic and fermionic systems, with a major focus on the Er-Er-Li Efimov states. For a system interacting solely via van der Waals interactions, the van der Waals universality of the three-body parameter is analytically derived using the quantum defect theory. With the addition of a perturbative dipole interaction between the heavy atoms, the three-body parameters of the bosonic and fermionic Efimov states are found to behave differently. When the dipole interaction is as strong as the van der Waals interaction, corresponding to realistic Er-Er-Li Efimov states, we show that the van der Waals universality persists once the effects of the non-perturbative dipole interaction are renormalized into the s-wave and p-wave scattering parameters between the heavy atoms. For a dipole interaction much stronger than the van der Waals interaction, we find that the universality of the Efimov states can be alternatively characterized by a quasi-one-dimensional scattering parameter due to a strong anisotropic deformation of the Efimov wavefunctions. Our work thus clarifies the interplay of isotropic and anisotropic forces in the universality of the Efimov states. Based on the renormalized van der Waals universality, the three-body parameter is estimated for specific isotopes of Er-Li cold-atom mixtures.

The third virial coefficient of a two-component unitary Fermi gas across an Efimov-effect threshold

We consider a mixture of two single-spin-state fermions with an interaction of negligible range and infinite $s$-wave scattering length. By varying the mass ratio $α$ across $α_c\simeq 13.6069$ one can switch on-and-off the Efimov effect. We determine analytically the third cluster coefficient of the gas. We show that it is a smooth function of $α$ across $α_c$ since, unexpectedly, the three-body parameter characterizing the interaction is relevant even on the non-Efimovian side $α<α_c$.

Topological phases and edge modes of an uneven ladder

We investigate the topological properties of a two-chain quantum ladder with uneven legs, i.e. the two chains differ in their periods by a factor of two. Such an uneven ladder presents rich band structures classified by the closure of either direct or indirect bandgaps. It also provides opportunities to explore fundamental concepts concerning band topology and edge modes, including the difference of intracellular and intercellular Zak phases, and the role of the inversion symmetry (IS). We calculate the Zak phases of the two kinds and find excellent agreement with the dipole moment and extra charge accumulation, respectively. We also find that configurations with IS feature a pair of degenerate two-side edge modes emerging as the closure of the direct bandgap, while configurations without IS feature one-side edge modes emerging as not only the closure of both direct and indirect bandgap but also within the band continuum. Furthermore, by projecting to the two sublattices, we find that the effective Bloch Hamiltonian corresponds to that of a generalized Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model or Rice-Mele model whose hopping amplitudes depend on the quasimomentum. In this way, the topological phases can be efficiently extracted through winding numbers. We propose that uneven ladders can be realized by spin-dependent optical lattices and their rich topological characteristics can be examined by near future experiments.

Unitary boson-boson and boson-fermion mixtures: third virial coefficient and three-body parameter on a narrow Feshbach resonance

We give exact integral expressions of the third cluster or virial coefficients of binary mixtures of ideal Bose or Fermi gases, with interspecies interactions of zero range and infinite s-wave scattering length. In general the result depends on three-body parameters Rt appearing in three-body contact conditions, because an Efimov effect is present or because the mixture is in a preefimovian regime with a mass ratio close to an Efimov effect threshold. We give a new, exact integral expression of Rt for the microscopic narrow Feshbach resonance model. A divergence of Rt in the preefimovian regime at a scaling exponent s = 1/2 is predicted and physically discussed. The analytical results are applied to typical species used in cold atom experiments.

Absence of a four-body Efimov effect in the 2 + 2 fermionic problem

In the free three-dimensional space, we consider a pair of identical $\uparrow$ fermions of some species or in some internal state, and a pair of identical $\downarrow$ fermions of another species or in another state. There is a resonant $s$-wave interaction (that is of zero range and infinite scattering length) between fermions in different pairs, and no interaction within the same pair. We study whether this $2+2$ fermionic system can exhibit (as the $3+1$ fermionic system) a four-body Efimov effect in the absence of three-body Efimov effect, that is the mass ratio $α$ between $\uparrow$ and $\downarrow$ fermions and its inverse are both smaller than 13.6069{\ldots}. For this purpose, we investigate scale invariant zero-energy solutions of the four-body Schr\''odinger equation, that is positively homogeneous functions of the coordinates of degree {$s-7/2$}, where $s$ is a generalized Efimov exponent {that becomes purely imaginary in the presence of a four-body Efimov effect.} Using rotational invariance in momentum space, it is found that the allowed values of $s$ are such that $M(s)$ has a zero eigenvalue; here the operator $M(s)$, that depends on the total angular momentum $\ell$, acts on functions of two real variables (the cosine of the angle between two wave vectors and the logarithm of the ratio of their moduli), and we write it explicitly in terms of an integral matrix kernel. We have performed a spectral analysis of $M(s)$, analytical and for an arbitrary imaginary $s$ for the continuous spectrum, numerical and limited to $s = 0$ and $\ell \le 12$ for the discrete spectrum. We conclude that no eigenvalue of $M(0)$ crosses zero over the mass ratio interval $α\in [1, 13.6069\ldots]$, even if, in the parity sector $(-1)^{\ell}$, the continuous spectrum of $M(s)$ has everywhere a zero lower border. As a consequence, there is no possibility of a four-body Efimov effect for the 2+2 fermions. We also enunciated a conjecture for the fourth virial coefficient of the unitary spin-$1/2$ Fermi gas, inspired from the known analytical form of the third cluster coefficient and involving the integral over the imaginary $s$-axis of $s$ times the logarithmic derivative of the determinant of $M(s)$ summed over all angular momenta. The conjectured value is in contradiction with the experimental results.

Efimov states in excited nuclear halos

Universality -- an essential concept in physics -- implies that different systems show the same phenomenon and can be described by a unified theory. A prime example of the universal quantum phenomena is the Efimov effect, which is the appearance of multiples of low-energy three-body bound states with progressively large sizes dictated by the discrete scale invariance. The Efimov effect, originally proposed in the nuclear physics context, has been observed in cold atoms and $^4\mathrm{He}$ molecules. The search for the Efimov effect in nuclear physics, however, has been a long-standing challenge owing to the difficulty in identifying ideal nuclides with a large $s$-wave scattering length; such nuclides can be unambiguously considered as Efimov states. Here, we propose a systematic method to identify nuclides that exhibit Efimov states in their excited states in the vicinity of the neutron separation threshold. These nuclei are characterised by their enormous low-energy neutron capture cross-sections, hence giant $s$-wave scattering length. Using our protocol, we identified $^{90}$Zr and $^{159}$Gd as novel candidate nuclides that show the Efimov states. They are well inside the valley of stability in the nuclear chart, and are suited for experimental realisation of the Efimov states in nuclear physics.

Efimov Physics: a review

This article reviews theoretical and experimental advances in Efimov physics, an array of quantum few-body and many-body phenomena arising for particles interacting via short-range resonant interactions, that is based on the appearance of a scale-invariant three-body attraction theoretically discovered by Vitaly Efimov in 1970. This three-body effect was originally proposed to explain the binding of nuclei such as the triton and the Hoyle state of carbon-12, and later considered as a simple explanation for the existence of some halo nuclei. It was subsequently evidenced in trapped ultra-cold atomic clouds and in diffracted molecular beams of gaseous helium. These experiments revealed that the previously undetermined three-body parameter introduced in the Efimov theory to stabilise the three-body attraction typically scales with the range of atomic interactions. The few- and many-body consequences of the Efimov attraction have been since investigated theoretically, and are expected to be observed in a broader spectrum of physical systems.

Fourth cluster and virial coefficients of a unitary Fermi gas for an arbitrary mass ratio

We calculate the fourth cluster coefficients of the homogeneous unitary spin 1/2 Fermi gas as functions of the internal-state mass ratio, over intervals constrained by the 3- or 4-body Efimov effect. For this we use our 2016 conjecture (validated for equal masses by Hou and Drut in 2020) in a numerically efficient formulation making the sum over angular momentum converge faster, which is crucial at large mass ratio. The mean cluster coefficient, relevant for equal chemical potentials, is not of constant sign and increases rapidly close to the Efimovian thresholds. We also get the fourth virial coefficients, which we find to be very poor indicators of interaction-induced 4-body correlations. We obtain analytically for all $n$ the cluster coefficients of order $n$ + 1 for an infinity-mass impurity fermion, matching the conjecture for $n=3$. Finally, in a harmonic potential, we predict a non-monotonic behavior of the 3 + 1 cluster coefficient with trapping frequency, near mass ratios where this coefficient vanishes in the homogeneous case.
