p/${π^+}$ response of single layer THGEM detector in Ar/3%iC$_4$H$_{10}$

In this work, we study the response of single layer Thick GEM (THGEM) detector to p/${π^+}$ at E3 line of Beijing Test Beam Facility. In our experiment, the drift gap of THGEM Detector is 4mm, and the working gas is Ar/3% iso. Result shows at the momentum 500MeV/c to 1000MeV/c, detection efficiency for p is from 93% to 99% in a relatively lower gain($\sim$2000), while the detection efficiency for ${π^+}$ is slightly lower than that for p, which is from 82% to 88%. Meanwhile, simple Geant4 simulations have been done, and results of beam test are almost consistent with it. We preliminarily study the feasibility of THGEM detectors as sampling elements for Digital Hadronic Calorimeter(DHCAL), which may provide related reference for THGEM possibly applied in Circular Electron Positron Collider(CEPC) HCAL.

Significance of self magnetic field in long-distance collimation of laser-generated electron beams

Long-distance collimation of fast electron beams generated by laser-metallic-wire targets has been observed in recent experiments, while the mechanism behind this phenomenon remains unclear. In this work, we investigate in detail the laser-wire interaction processes with a simplified model and Classical Trajectory Monte Carlo simulations, and demonstrate the significance of the self magnetic fields of the beams in the long-distance collimation. Good agreements of simulated image plate patterns with various experiments and detailed analysis of electron trajectories show that the self magnetic fields provide restoring force that is critical for the beam collimation. By studying the wire-length dependence of beam divergence in certain experiments, we clarify that the role of the metallic wire is to balance the space-charge effect and thus maintain the collimation.

Spatial-Temporal Dynamics of High-Resolution Animal Social Networks: What Can We Learn from Domestic Animals?

Recent studies of animal social networks have significantly increased our understanding of animal behavior, social interactions, and many important ecological and epidemiological processes. However, most of the studies are at low temporal and spatial resolution due to the difficulty in recording accurate contact information. Domestic animals such as cattle have social behavior and serve as an excellent study system because their position can be explicitly and continuously tracked, allowing their social networks to be accurately constructed. We used radio-frequency tags to accurately track cattle position and analyze high-resolution cattle social networks. We tested the hypothesis of temporal stationarity and spatial homogeneity in these high-resolution networks and demonstrated substantial spatial-temporal heterogeneity during different daily time periods (feeding and non-feeding) and in different areas of the pen (grain bunk, water trough, hay bunk, and other general pen area). The social network structure is analyzed using global network characteristics (network density, exponential random graph model structure), subgroup clustering (modularity), triadic property (transitivity), and dyadic interactions (correlation coefficient from a quadratic assignment procedure). Cattle tend to have the strongest and most consistent contacts with others around the hay bunk during the feeding time. These results cannot be determined from data at lower spatial (aggregated at entire pen level) or temporal (aggregated at daily level) resolution. These results reveal new insights for real-time animal social network structure dynamics, providing more accurate descriptions that allow more accurate modeling of multiple (both direct and indirect) disease transmission pathways.

Magnetic Generation due to Mass Difference between Charge Carriers

The possibility of spontaneous magnetization due to the "asymmetry in mass" of charge carriers in a system is investigated. Analysis shows that when the masses of positive and negative charge carriers are identical, no magnetization is predicted. However, if the masses of two species are different, spontaneous magnetic field would appear, either due to the equipartition of magnetic energy or due to fluctuations together with a feedback mechanism. The conditions for magnetization to occur are also obtained, in the form of n-T phase diagram. The theory proposed here, if confirmed by future observations and/or experiments, would provide a new insight on the origin of magnetic fields in the universe.

Experimental studies of THGEM in different Ar/CO2 mixtures

In this paper, the performances of a type of the domestic THGEM (THick Gaseous Electron Multiplier) working in the Ar/CO2 mixtures are reported in details. This kind of single THGEM can provide the gain range from 100 to 1000, which is very suitable for the application in the neutron detection. In order to study its basic characteristics as the references for the development of THGEM based neutron detector, the counting rate plateau, the energy resolution and the gain of the THGEM have been measured in the different Ar/CO2 mixtures with the change of the electrical fields. For the Ar/CO2(90%/10%) gas mixture, a wide counting rate plateau is got from 720V to 770V with the plateau slope of 2.4% / 100 V and the excellent energy resolution about 22% is obtained at the 5.9keV full energy peak of the 55Fe X-ray source.

Cross Kerr Effect Induced by Coupled Josephson Qubits in Circuit Quantum Electrodynamics

We propose a scheme for implementing cross Kerr nonlinearity between two superconducting transmission line resonators (TLR) via their interaction with a coupler which is constructed by two superconducting charge qubits connected to each other via a superconducting quantum interference device. When suitably driven, the coupler can induce very strong cross phase modulation (XPM) between the two TLRs due to its N-type level structure and the consequent electromagnetically induced transparency in its lowest states. The flexibility of our design can lead to various inter-TLR coupling configurations. The obtained cross Kerr coefficient is large enough to allow many important quantum operations in which only few photons are involved. We further show that this scheme is very robust against the fluctuations in solid state circuits. Our numerical calculations imply that the absorption and dispersion resulted from the decoherence of the coupler are very small compared with the strength of the proposed XPM.

A Model Analyzing Life Cycle of Periodical Cicadas

This paper focuses on a mathematical model interpreting the prime number life cycle of periodical cicadas.Changed the viewpoint to predators rather than the prey, this model fits reality very well by utilizing some principles and assumption. With the definition of the predator income, natural selection from predators seems to be the main reason for such a long life cycle.Consequent solution of this model is exactly the fact of real nature.

A Fixed-Length Coding Algorithm for DNA Sequence Compression

While achieving a compression ratio of 2.0 bits/base, the new algorithm codes non-N bases in fixed length. It dramatically reduces the time of coding and decoding than previous DNA compression algorithms and some universal compression programs.

A DNA Sequence Compression Algorithm Based on LUT and LZ77

This article introduces a new DNA sequence compression algorithm which is based on LUT and LZ77 algorithm. Combined a LUT-based pre-coding routine and LZ77 compression routine, this algorithm can approach a compression ratio of 1.9bits \slash base and even lower. The biggest advantage of this algorithm is fast execution, small memory occupation and easy implementation.

A Predation Behavior Model Based on Game Theory

This article adopts game theory to build a model for explaining the predation behavior of animals. We assume that both the prey and the preydator have two stratigies in this game, the active one and the passive one.By calculating the outcome and the income of energy in different stratigies, we find the solution to analyze the different evolution path of both the prey and the predator.A simulation result approximately represents the correctness of our model.
