Anomaly and invertible field theory with higher-form symmetry: Extended group cohomology

In the realm of invertible symmetry, the topological approach based on classifying spaces dominates the classification of 't Hooft anomalies and symmetry protected topological phases. We explore the alternative algebraic approach based on cochains that directly characterize the lattice lagrangian of invertible field theories and the anomalous phase factor of topological operator rearrangements. In the current literature, the algebraic approach has been systematically described for only finite 0-form symmetries. In this initial work, we generalize it to finite higher-form symmetries with trivial higher-group structure. We carefully analyze the algebraic cochains and abstract a purely algebraic structure that naturally generalizes group cohomology. Using techniques from simplicial homotopy theory, we show its isomorphism to the cohomology of classifying spaces. The proof is based on an explicit construction of Eilenberg-MacLane spaces and their products.

A Good Score Does not Lead to A Good Generative Model

Score-based Generative Models (SGMs) is one leading method in generative modeling, renowned for their ability to generate high-quality samples from complex, high-dimensional data distributions. The method enjoys empirical success and is supported by rigorous theoretical convergence properties. In particular, it has been shown that SGMs can generate samples from a distribution that is close to the ground-truth if the underlying score function is learned well, suggesting the success of SGM as a generative model. We provide a counter-example in this paper. Through the sample complexity argument, we provide one specific setting where the score function is learned well. Yet, SGMs in this setting can only output samples that are Gaussian blurring of training data points, mimicking the effects of kernel density estimation. The finding resonates a series of recent finding that reveal that SGMs can demonstrate strong memorization effect and fail to generate.

GTAutoAct: An Automatic Datasets Generation Framework Based on Game Engine Redevelopment for Action Recognition

Current datasets for action recognition tasks face limitations stemming from traditional collection and generation methods, including the constrained range of action classes, absence of multi-viewpoint recordings, limited diversity, poor video quality, and labor-intensive manually collection. To address these challenges, we introduce GTAutoAct, a innovative dataset generation framework leveraging game engine technology to facilitate advancements in action recognition. GTAutoAct excels in automatically creating large-scale, well-annotated datasets with extensive action classes and superior video quality. Our framework's distinctive contributions encompass: (1) it innovatively transforms readily available coordinate-based 3D human motion into rotation-orientated representation with enhanced suitability in multiple viewpoints; (2) it employs dynamic segmentation and interpolation of rotation sequences to create smooth and realistic animations of action; (3) it offers extensively customizable animation scenes; (4) it implements an autonomous video capture and processing pipeline, featuring a randomly navigating camera, with auto-trimming and labeling functionalities. Experimental results underscore the framework's robustness and highlights its potential to significantly improve action recognition model training.

A Pure Integral-Type PLL with a Damping Branch to Enhance the Stability of Grid-Tied Inverter under Weak Grids

In a phase-locked loop (PLL) synchronized inverter, due to the strong nonlinear coupling between the PLL's parame-ters and the operation power angle, the equivalent damping coefficient will quickly deteriorate while the power angle is close to 90° under an ultra-weak grid, which causes the synchronous instability. To address this issue, in this letter, a pure integral-type phase-locked loop (IPLL) with a damping branch is proposed to replace the traditional PI-type PLL. The equivalent damping coefficient of an IPLL-synchronized inverter is decoupled with the steady-state power angle. As a result, the IPLL-synchronized inverter can stably operate under an ultra-weak grid when the equilibrium point exists. Finally, time-domain simulation results verify the effectiveness and correctness of the proposed IPLL.

Cross-Scope Spatial-Spectral Information Aggregation for Hyperspectral Image Super-Resolution

Hyperspectral image super-resolution has attained widespread prominence to enhance the spatial resolution of hyperspectral images. However, convolution-based methods have encountered challenges in harnessing the global spatial-spectral information. The prevailing transformer-based methods have not adequately captured the long-range dependencies in both spectral and spatial dimensions. To alleviate this issue, we propose a novel cross-scope spatial-spectral Transformer (CST) to efficiently investigate long-range spatial and spectral similarities for single hyperspectral image super-resolution. Specifically, we devise cross-attention mechanisms in spatial and spectral dimensions to comprehensively model the long-range spatial-spectral characteristics. By integrating global information into the rectangle-window self-attention, we first design a cross-scope spatial self-attention to facilitate long-range spatial interactions. Then, by leveraging appropriately characteristic spatial-spectral features, we construct a cross-scope spectral self-attention to effectively capture the intrinsic correlations among global spectral bands. Finally, we elaborate a concise feed-forward neural network to enhance the feature representation capacity in the Transformer structure. Extensive experiments over three hyperspectral datasets demonstrate that the proposed CST is superior to other state-of-the-art methods both quantitatively and visually. The code is available at \url{https://github.com/Tomchenshi/CST.git}.

No-Regret Learning in Two-Echelon Supply Chain with Unknown Demand Distribution

Supply chain management (SCM) has been recognized as an important discipline with applications to many industries, where the two-echelon stochastic inventory model, involving one downstream retailer and one upstream supplier, plays a fundamental role for developing firms' SCM strategies. In this work, we aim at designing online learning algorithms for this problem with an unknown demand distribution, which brings distinct features as compared to classic online optimization problems. Specifically, we consider the two-echelon supply chain model introduced in [Cachon and Zipkin, 1999] under two different settings: the centralized setting, where a planner decides both agents' strategy simultaneously, and the decentralized setting, where two agents decide their strategy independently and selfishly. We design algorithms that achieve favorable guarantees for both regret and convergence to the optimal inventory decision in both settings, and additionally for individual regret in the decentralized setting. Our algorithms are based on Online Gradient Descent and Online Newton Step, together with several new ingredients specifically designed for our problem. We also implement our algorithms and show their empirical effectiveness.

What Do Deep Saliency Models Learn about Visual Attention?

In recent years, deep saliency models have made significant progress in predicting human visual attention. However, the mechanisms behind their success remain largely unexplained due to the opaque nature of deep neural networks. In this paper, we present a novel analytic framework that sheds light on the implicit features learned by saliency models and provides principled interpretation and quantification of their contributions to saliency prediction. Our approach decomposes these implicit features into interpretable bases that are explicitly aligned with semantic attributes and reformulates saliency prediction as a weighted combination of probability maps connecting the bases and saliency. By applying our framework, we conduct extensive analyses from various perspectives, including the positive and negative weights of semantics, the impact of training data and architectural designs, the progressive influences of fine-tuning, and common failure patterns of state-of-the-art deep saliency models. Additionally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework by exploring visual attention characteristics in various application scenarios, such as the atypical attention of people with autism spectrum disorder, attention to emotion-eliciting stimuli, and attention evolution over time. Application of Deep Learning Methods Combined with Physical Background in Wide Field of View Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes

The HADAR experiment, which will be constructed in Tibet, China, combines the wide-angle advantages of traditional EAS array detectors with the high sensitivity advantages of focused Cherenkov detectors. Its physics objective is to observe transient sources such as gamma-ray bursts and counterparts of gravitational waves. The aim of this study is to utilize the latest AI technology to enhance the sensitivity of the HADAR experiment. We have built training datasets and models with distinctive creativity by incorporating relevant physical theories for various applications. They are able to determine the kind, energy, and direction of incident particles after careful design. We have obtained a background identification accuracy of 98.6%, a relative energy reconstruction error of 10.0%, and an angular resolution of 0.22-degrees in a test dataset at 10 TeV. These findings demonstrate the enormous potential for enhancing the precision and dependability of detector data analysis in astrophysical research. Thanks to deep learning techniques, the HADAR experiment's observational sensitivity to the Crab Nebula has surpassed that of MAGIC and H.E.S.S. at energies below 0.5 TeV and remains competitive with conventional narrow-field Cherenkov telescopes at higher energies. Additionally, our experiment offers a fresh approach to dealing with strongly connected scattered data.

Solitonic symmetry as non-invertible symmetry: cohomology theories with TQFT coefficients

Originating from the topology of the path-integral target space $Y$, solitonic symmetry describes the conservation law of topological solitons and the selection rule of defect operators. As Ref.~\cite{Chen:2022cyw} exemplifies, the conventional treatment of solitonic symmetry as an invertible symmetry based on homotopy groups is inappropriate. In this paper, we develop a systematic framework to treat solitonic symmetries as non-invertible generalized symmetries. We propose that the non-invertible solitonic symmetries are generated by the partition functions of auxiliary topological quantum field theories (TQFTs) coupled with the target space $Y$. We then understand solitonic symmetries as non-invertible cohomology theories on $Y$ with TQFT coefficients. This perspective enables us to identify the invertible solitonic subsymmetries and also clarifies the topological origin of the non-invertibility in solitonic symmetry. We finally discuss how solitonic symmetry relies on and goes beyond the conventional wisdom of homotopy groups. This paper is aimed at a tentative general framework for solitonic symmetry, serving as a starting point for future developments.

AIGCIQA2023: A Large-scale Image Quality Assessment Database for AI Generated Images: from the Perspectives of Quality, Authenticity and Correspondence

In this paper, in order to get a better understanding of the human visual preferences for AIGIs, a large-scale IQA database for AIGC is established, which is named as AIGCIQA2023. We first generate over 2000 images based on 6 state-of-the-art text-to-image generation models using 100 prompts. Based on these images, a well-organized subjective experiment is conducted to assess the human visual preferences for each image from three perspectives including quality, authenticity and correspondence. Finally, based on this large-scale database, we conduct a benchmark experiment to evaluate the performance of several state-of-the-art IQA metrics on our constructed database.

Solitonic symmetry beyond homotopy: Invertibility from bordism and noninvertibility from topological quantum field theory

Solitonic symmetry has been believed to follow the homotopy-group classification of topological solitons. Here, we point out a more sophisticated algebraic structure when solitons of different dimensions coexist in the spectrum. We uncover this phenomenon in a concrete quantum field theory, the $4$d $\mathbb{C}P^1$ model. This model has two kinds of solitonic excitations, vortices and hopfions, which would follow two $U(1)$ solitonic symmetries according to homotopy groups. Nevertheless, we demonstrate the nonexistence of the hopfion $U(1)$ symmetry by evaluating the hopfion charge of vortex operators. We clarify that what conserves hopfion numbers is a non-invertible symmetry generated by 3d spin topological quantum field theories (TQFTs). Its invertible part is just $\mathbb{Z}_2$, which we recognize as a spin bordism invariant. Compared with the 3d $\mathbb{C}P^1$ model, our work suggests a unified description of solitonic symmetries and couplings to topological phases.

On optimal bases for multiscale PDEs and Bayesian homogenization

PDE solutions are numerically represented by basis functions. Classical methods employ pre-defined bases that encode minimum desired PDE properties, which naturally cause redundant computations. What are the best bases to numerically represent PDE solutions? From the analytical perspective, the Kolmogorov $n$-width is a popular criterion for selecting representative basis functions. From the Bayesian computation perspective, the concept of optimality selects the modes that, when known, minimize the variance of the conditional distribution of the rest of the solution. We show that these two definitions of optimality are equivalent. Numerically, both criteria reduce to solving a Singular Value Decomposition (SVD), a procedure that can be made numerically efficient through randomized sampling. We demonstrate computationally the effectiveness of the basis functions so obtained on several linear and nonlinear problems. In all cases, the optimal accuracy is achieved with a small set of basis functions.

Unlocking Hidden Spins in Centrosymmetric SnSe2 by Vacancy-Controlled Spin-Orbit Scattering

Spin current generation and manipulation remain the key challenge of spintronics, in which relativistic spinorbit coupling (SOC) play a ubiquitous role. In this letter, we demonstrate that hidden Rashba spins in the non-magnetic, centrosymmetric lattice of multilayer SnSe2 can be efficiently activated by spin-orbit scattering introduced by Se vacancies. Via vacancy scattering, conduction electrons with hidden spin-momentum locked polarizations acquire out-of-plane magnetization components, which effectively break the chiral symmetry between the two Se sublattices of an SnSe2 monolayer when electron spins start precession in the strong built-in Rashba SOC field. The resulting spin separations are manifested in quantum transport as vacancy concentrationand temperature-dependent crossovers from weak antilocalization (WAL) to weak localization (WL), with the distinctive spin relaxation mechanism of the Dyakonov-Perel type. Our study shows the great potential of twodimensional systems with hidden-spin textures for spintronics.

Learning Harmonic Molecular Representations on Riemannian Manifold

Molecular representation learning plays a crucial role in AI-assisted drug discovery research. Encoding 3D molecular structures through Euclidean neural networks has become the prevailing method in the geometric deep learning community. However, the equivariance constraints and message passing in Euclidean space may limit the network expressive power. In this work, we propose a Harmonic Molecular Representation learning (HMR) framework, which represents a molecule using the Laplace-Beltrami eigenfunctions of its molecular surface. HMR offers a multi-resolution representation of molecular geometric and chemical features on 2D Riemannian manifold. We also introduce a harmonic message passing method to realize efficient spectral message passing over the surface manifold for better molecular encoding. Our proposed method shows comparable predictive power to current models in small molecule property prediction, and outperforms the state-of-the-art deep learning models for ligand-binding protein pocket classification and the rigid protein docking challenge, demonstrating its versatility in molecular representation learning.

Divide and Conquer: Answering Questions with Object Factorization and Compositional Reasoning

Humans have the innate capability to answer diverse questions, which is rooted in the natural ability to correlate different concepts based on their semantic relationships and decompose difficult problems into sub-tasks. On the contrary, existing visual reasoning methods assume training samples that capture every possible object and reasoning problem, and rely on black-boxed models that commonly exploit statistical priors. They have yet to develop the capability to address novel objects or spurious biases in real-world scenarios, and also fall short of interpreting the rationales behind their decisions. Inspired by humans' reasoning of the visual world, we tackle the aforementioned challenges from a compositional perspective, and propose an integral framework consisting of a principled object factorization method and a novel neural module network. Our factorization method decomposes objects based on their key characteristics, and automatically derives prototypes that represent a wide range of objects. With these prototypes encoding important semantics, the proposed network then correlates objects by measuring their similarity on a common semantic space and makes decisions with a compositional reasoning process. It is capable of answering questions with diverse objects regardless of their availability during training, and overcoming the issues of biased question-answer distributions. In addition to the enhanced generalizability, our framework also provides an interpretable interface for understanding the decision-making process of models. Our code is available at https://github.com/szzexpoi/POEM.

Magnetic enhancement of baryon confinement modeled via a deformed Skyrmion

We discuss the baryon properties under a strong magnetic field. We adopt the Skyrme model and calculate the magnetic field dependence of the mass and the pressure distribution in the soliton. We elucidate a magnetically induced contribution to the pressure sum rule and interpret it as an extra confining force. We also quantize the soliton to estimate the difference between the proton and the neutron and find a simple relation between the pressure and the mass differences.

Detecting Fermi Surface Nesting Effect for Fermionic Dicke Transition by Trap Induced Localization

Recently, the statistical effect of fermionic superradiance is approved by series of experiments both in free space and in a cavity. The Pauli blocking effect can be visualized by a 1/2 scaling of Dicke transition critical pumping strength against particle number Nat for fermions in a trap. However, the Fermi surface nesting effect, which manifests the enhancement of superradiance by Fermi statistics is still very hard to be identified. Here we studied the influence of localized fermions on the trap edge when both pumping optical lattice and the trap are presented. We find due to localization, the statistical effect in superradiant transition is enhanced. Two new scalings of critical pumping strength are observed as 4/3, and 2/3 for mediate particle number, and the Pauli blocking scaling 1/3 (2d case) in large particle number limit is unaffected. Further, we find the 4/3 scaling is subject to a power law increasing with rising ratio between recoil energy and trap frequency in pumping laser direction. The divergence of this scaling of critical pumping strength against $N_{\rm at}$ in $E_R/ω_x\rightarrow+\infty$ limit can be identified as the Fermi surface nesting effect. Thus we find a practical experimental scheme for visualizing the long-desired Fermi surface nesting effect with the help of trap induced localization in a two-dimensional Fermi gas in a cavity.

Late-time correlation functions in dS$_3$/CFT$_2$ correspondence

We compute the late-time correlation functions on three-dimensional de Sitter spacetime for a higher-spin gravity theory. For this, we elaborate on the formulation to obtain the wave functional of universe from a dual conformal field theory, which is used to compute the late-time correlation functions. We argue that the relation to direct bulk Feynman diagram computations in the in-in formulation. We furthermore provide a precise prescription to construct a higher-spin dS$_3$ holography as an analytic continuation of Gaberdiel-Gopakumar duality for AdS$_3$. Part of results here were already reported in an earlier letter. We explain the details of their derivations and extend the analysis to more generic cases in this paper. Previously, we have examined two- and three-point functions and a simple four-point correlator at the leading order in Newton constant. Here we also evaluate more complicated four-point correlators. Finally, we study late-time correlators in an alternative limit of dS$_3$/CFT$_2$ with critical level coset, such as, two-point correlator on conical defect geometry. We also examine one-loop corrections to two-point correlator on dS$_3$.
