Methods of determining the absolute branching fractions of $\Lambda_c^+$ baryons and $D_s^+$ mesons at hadron colliders

Current absolute branching fractions of $\Lambda_c^+$ and $D_s^+$ mesons are limiting the determination of important measurements. They have only been measured at $e^+e^-$ colliders. Here techniques for measuring them at hadron colliders are discussed. The precision determination of $\Lambda_c^+\to p K^-\pi^+$ seems possible with current data, however the corresponding determination of $D_s^+\to K^+K^-\pi^+$ will require more integrated luminosity.

Signal coupling to embedded pitch adapters in silicon sensors

We have examined the effects of embedded pitch adapters on signal formation in n-substrate silicon microstrip sensors with data from beam tests and simulation. According to simulation, the presence of the pitch adapter metal layer changes the electric field inside the sensor, resulting in slowed signal formation on the nearby strips and a pick-up effect on the pitch adapter. This can result in an inefficiency to detect particles passing through the pitch adapter region. All these effects have been observed in the beam test data.

Exotics: Heavy Pentaquarks and Tetraquarks

For many decades after the invention of the quark model in 1964 there was no evidence that hadrons are formed from anything other than the simplest pairings of quarks and antiquarks, mesons being formed of a quark-antiquark pair and baryons from three quarks. In the last decade, however, in an explosion of data from both $e^+e^-$ and hadron colliders, there are many recently observed states that do not fit into this picture. These new particles are called generically "exotics". They can be either mesons or baryons. Remarkably, they all decay into at least one meson formed of either a $c\overline{c}$ or $b\overline{b}$ pair. In this review, after the introduction, we explore each of these new discoveries in detail first from an experimental point of view, then subsequently give a theoretical discussion. These exotics can be explained if the new mesons contain two-quarks and two-antiquarks (tetraquarks), while the baryons contain four-quarks plus an antiquark (pentquarks). The theoretical explanations for these states take three divergent tracks: tightly bound objects, just as in the case of normal hadrons, but with more constituents, or loosely bound "molecules" similar to the deuteron, but formed from two mesons, or a meson or baryon, or more wistfully, they are not multiquark states but appear due to kinematic effects caused by different rescatterings of virtual particles; most of these models have all been post-dictions. Both the tightly and loosely bound models predict the masses and related quantum numbers of new, as yet undiscovered states. Thus, future experimental discoveries are needed along with theoretical advances to elucidate the structure of these new exotic states.

Pentaquarks and Tetraquarks at LHCb

Exotic resonant structures found in $\Lambda^0_b$ and $\overline{B}^0$ decays into charmonium in the LHCb experiment are discussed. Examination of the $J/\psi p$ system in $\Lambda^0_b\to J/\psi K^- p$ decays shows two states each of which must be composed of $uudc\overline{c}$ quarks, and thus are called charmonium pentaquarks. Their masses are $4380\pm 8\pm 29$~MeV and $4449.8\pm 1.7\pm 2.5$~MeV, and their corresponding widths ($\Gamma$) are $205\pm 18\pm 86$ MeV, and $39\pm 5\pm 19$ MeV. The preferred $J^P$ assignments are of opposite parity, with one state having spin 3/2 and the other 5/2. Models of internal binding of the pentaquark states are discussed. Finally, another mesonic state is discussed, the $Z(4430)^-$ that decays into $\psi' \pi^-$ and was first observed by the Belle collaboration in $B^0\to \psi' K^+\pi^-$ decays. Using a sample of approximately 25,000 signal events, LHCb determines the $J^{P}$ to be $1^{+}$.

Leptonic Decays of Charged Pseudoscalar Mesons - 2015

We review the physics of purely leptonic decays of $\pi^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $D^{\pm}$, $D_s^\pm$, and $B^\pm$ pseudoscalar mesons. The measured decay rates are related to the product of the relevant weak-interaction-based CKM matrix element of the constituent quarks and a strong interaction parameter related to the overlap of the quark and antiquark wave-functions in the meson, called the decay constant $f_P$. The leptonic decay constants for $\pi^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $D^{\pm}$, $D_s^\pm$, and $B^\pm$ mesons can be obtained with controlled theoretical uncertainties and high precision from {\it ab initio} lattice-QCD simulations. The combination of experimental leptonic decay-rate measurements and theoretical decay-constant calculations enables the determination of several elements of the CKM matrix within the standard model. These determinations are competitive with those obtained from semileptonic decays, and also complementary because they are sensitive to different quark flavor-changing currents. They can also be used to test the unitarity of the first and second rows of the CKM matrix. Conversely, taking the CKM elements predicted by unitarity, one can infer "experimental" values for $f_P$ that can be compared with theory. These provide tests of lattice-QCD methods, provided new-physics contributions to leptonic decays are negligible at the current level of precision. This review is the basis of the article in the Particle Data Group's 2016 edition, updating the versions in Refs. [1-3].

Lifetimes of some $b$-flavored hadrons

Recent measurements of lifetimes of some $b$-flavored hadrons are presented and interpreted in the context of theoretical models, especially the Heavy Quark Expansion. Decay widths and decay width differences in the $B_s^0-\overline{B}_s^0$ system are discussed from studies of decays into the final states $J/\psi K^+K^-$, $J/\psi \pi^+\pi^-$, $D_s^+D_s^-$, $K^+K^-$, and $D_s^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}$. Lifetime measurements of the baryons $\Lambda_b^0$, $\Xi_b^-$, $\Xi_b^0$, and $\Omega_b^-$ are also shown.

Method of Studying $\Lambda_b^0$ decays with one missing particle

A new technique is discussed that can be applied to $\Lambda_b^0$ baryon decays where decays with one missing particle can be discerned from background and their branching fractions determined, along with other properties of the decays. Applications include measurements of the CKM elements $|V_{ub}|$ and $|V_{cb}|$, selected charmless decays, and detection of any exotic objects coupling to $b\to s$ decays, such as the inflaton.

Leptonic Decays of Charged Pseudoscalar Mesons - 2013

We review the physics of purely leptonic decays of $\pi^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $D^{\pm}$, $D_s^\pm$, and $B^\pm$ pseudoscalar mesons. The measured decay rates are related to the product of the relevant weak-interaction-based CKM matrix element of the constituent quarks and a strong interaction parameter related to the overlap of the quark and antiquark wave-functions in the meson, called the decay constant $f_P$. The interplay between theory and experiment is different for each particle. Theoretical predictions of $f_B$ that are needed in the $B$ sector can be tested by measuring $f_{D^+}$ and $f_{D_s^+}$ in the charm sector. The lighter $\pi^{\pm}$ and $K^{\pm}$ mesons provide stringent comparisons between experiment and theory due to the accuracy of both the measurements and the theoretical predictions. An abridged version of this review was prepared for the Particle Data Group's 2014 edition \cite{Previous}.

Use of B->J/\psi f0 decays to discern the q anti-q or tetraquark nature of scalar mesons

We consider the relative decay rates of B0 and Bs mesons into a J\psi\ plus a light scalar meson either the f0(500) (\sigma) or the f0(980). We show that it is possible to distinguish between the quark content of the scalars being quark-antiquark or tetraquark by measuring specific ratios of decay rates. Using current data we determine the ratio of form-factors in Bs->J\psi f0(980) with respect to B0->J\psi f0(500) decays to be 1.02(+0.14, -0.04) at a four-momentum transfer squared equal to the mass of the J\psi\ meson squared. In the case where these light mesons are considered to be quark-antiquark states, we give a determination of the mixing angle between strange and light quark states of less than 28 degrees at 90% confidence level. We also discuss the use of a similar ratio to investigate the structure of other isospin singlet states.

New physics from flavour

I report on investigations of physics beyond the Standard Model using experiments designed to investigate $b$ quark and $c$ quark interactions. Generalized searches involving loop diagrams using heavy meson mixing and CP violation experiments imply limits on New Physics (NP) at large scales from 100-100,000 TeV. There are ways of avoiding these limits, but satisfying their requirements puts severe restrictions on NP properties. Specific constraints on NP models are discussed from individual measurements including b-> s gamma, Bs->mu+ mu-, B0 -> K* l+ l-, and CP violation in the B0 and Bs systems. Hints of deviations from Standard Model predictions from other decays including B- -> tau- nu, and B->D(*)tau- nu$\ are investigated. Finally, searches for dark matter and Majorana neutrinos are reviewed.

Time-dependent Dalitz-plot formalism for B_q -> J/\psi\ h+ h-

A formalism for measuring time-dependent CP violation in B_q -> J/\psi h+ h- decays with J/\psi-> mu+ mu- is developed for the general case where there can be many h+ h- final states of different angular momentum present. Here h refers to any spinless meson. The decay amplitude is derived using similar considerations as those in a Daltiz like analysis of three-body spinless mesons taking into account the fact that the J/\psi is spin-1, and the various interferences allowed between different final states. Implementation of this procedure can, in principle, lead to the use of a larger number of final states for CP violation studies.

Heavy Flavor Physics

The main purpose of Heavy Flavor experiments is to discover physics beyond the Standard Model, or characterize it, should it be found elsewhere. Thus, current limits on New Physics (NP) are reviewed. New results are presented, some involving processes that could show NP even with current data. Specific topics include the CKM element |Vub|, the forward-backward asymmetry in B -> K* mu+ mu-, b-hadron fractions at the LHC, B(Bs -> mu+ mu-), first observations of several Bs and Bc decay modes, the X(4140), new b-baryons and their decays, searches for Majorana neutrinos, and Lepton Flavor Violation.

Top LHCb Physics

We suggest that top physics can be studied at the LHCb experiment, and that top production could be observed. Since LHCb covers a large pseudorapidity region in the forward direction, it has unique abilities to probe new physics in the top sector. Furthermore, we demonstrate that LHCb may be able to measure a t\bar t production rate asymmetry, and thus indirectly probe an anomalous forward backward t\bar t asymmetry in the forward region; a possibility suggested by the enhanced forward-backward asymmetry reported by the CDF experiment.

S-waves and the extraction of beta_s

The CP Violating asymmetry in Bs mixing (beta_s) is one of the most promising measurements where physics beyond the Standard Model could be revealed. As such, analyses need to be subjected to great scrutiny. The mode Bs -> J/psi\phi has been used, and the mode Bs -> \phi \phi proposed for future measurements. These modes both have two vector particles in the final state and thus angular analyses must be used to disentangle the contributions from CP+ and CP- configurations. The angular distributions, however, could be distorted by the presence of S-waves masquerading as low mass K+K- pairs, that could result in erroneous values of beta_s. The S-waves could well be the result of a final state formed from an s-quark anti-s-quark pair in a 0+ spin-parity state, such as the f0(980) meson. Data driven and theoretical estimates of the Bs decay rate into the CP+ final state J/psi f0(980) are given, when f0 -> pi+pi-. The S-wave contribution in J\psi\phi should be taken into account when determining beta_s by including a K+K- S-wave amplitude in the fit. This may change the central value of current results and will also increase the statistical uncertainty. Importantly, the J/psi f0(980) mode has been suggested as an alternative channel for measuring beta_s.

Leptonic Decays of Charged Pseudoscalar Mesons

We review the physics of purely leptonic decays of $π^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $D^{\pm}$, $D_s^\pm$, and $B^\pm$ pseudoscalar mesons. The measured decay rates are related to the product of the relevant weak-interaction-based CKM matrix element of the constituent quarks and a strong interaction parameter related to the overlap of the quark and anti-quark wave-functions in the meson, called the decay constant $f_P$. The interplay between theory and experiment is different for each particle. Theoretical predictions of $f_B$ that are needed in the $B$ sector can be tested by measuring $f_{D^+}$ and $f_{D_s^+}$ in the charm sector. Currently, these tests are unsatisfactory. The lighter $π$ and $K$ mesons provide stringent comparisons between experiment and theory due to the accuracy of both the measurements and the theoretical predictions. B Meson Decays

We discuss the most important Physics thus far extracted from studies of B meson decays. Measurements of the four CP violating angles accessible in B decay are reviewed as well as direct CP violation. A detailed discussion of the measurements of the CKM elements V_{cb} and V_{ub} from semileptonic decays is given, and the differences between resulting values using inclusive decays versus exclusive decays is discussed. Measurements of "rare" decays are also reviewed. We point out where CP violating and rare decays could lead to observations of physics beyond that of the Standard Model in future experiments. If such physics is found by directly observation of new particles, e.g. in LHC experiments, B decays can play a decisive role in interpreting the nature of these particles.

Measuring the CP Violating Phase in Bs Mixing Using Bs -> J/ψf_0(980)

We show that the decay Bs -> J/psi f0(980), f0(980)->pi+ pi- can be used to measure the CP violating phase in Bs mixing, -2β_s, and estimate the sensitivity as +/- 0.050 rad, for 2/fb of LHCb data. After adding in the related Bs -> J/psi eta', η' -> rho gamma mode, the sensitivity improves to +/- 0.044 rad. Use of these CP eigenstates obviates the need for a transversity analysis that must be used in the case of Bs -> J/psi phi decays.
