An Improved Evaluation Framework for Generative Adversarial Networks

In this paper, we propose an improved quantitative evaluation framework for Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) on generating domain-specific images, where we improve conventional evaluation methods on two levels: the feature representation and the evaluation metric. Unlike most existing evaluation frameworks which transfer the representation of ImageNet inception model to map images onto the feature space, our framework uses a specialized encoder to acquire fine-grained domain-specific representation. Moreover, for datasets with multiple classes, we propose Class-Aware Frechet Distance (CAFD), which employs a Gaussian mixture model on the feature space to better fit the multi-manifold feature distribution. Experiments and analysis on both the feature level and the image level were conducted to demonstrate improvements of our proposed framework over the recently proposed state-of-the-art FID method. To our best knowledge, we are the first to provide counter examples where FID gives inconsistent results with human judgments. It is shown in the experiments that our framework is able to overcome the shortness of FID and improves robustness. Code will be made available.

Impression Network for Video Object Detection

Video object detection is more challenging compared to image object detection. Previous works proved that applying object detector frame by frame is not only slow but also inaccurate. Visual clues get weakened by defocus and motion blur, causing failure on corresponding frames. Multi-frame feature fusion methods proved effective in improving the accuracy, but they dramatically sacrifice the speed. Feature propagation based methods proved effective in improving the speed, but they sacrifice the accuracy. So is it possible to improve speed and performance simultaneously? Inspired by how human utilize impression to recognize objects from blurry frames, we propose Impression Network that embodies a natural and efficient feature aggregation mechanism. In our framework, an impression feature is established by iteratively absorbing sparsely extracted frame features. The impression feature is propagated all the way down the video, helping enhance features of low-quality frames. This impression mechanism makes it possible to perform long-range multi-frame feature fusion among sparse keyframes with minimal overhead. It significantly improves per-frame detection baseline on ImageNet VID while being 3 times faster (20 fps). We hope Impression Network can provide a new perspective on video feature enhancement. Code will be made available.

An End-to-End Compression Framework Based on Convolutional Neural Networks

Deep learning, e.g., convolutional neural networks (CNNs), has achieved great success in image processing and computer vision especially in high level vision applications such as recognition and understanding. However, it is rarely used to solve low-level vision problems such as image compression studied in this paper. Here, we move forward a step and propose a novel compression framework based on CNNs. To achieve high-quality image compression at low bit rates, two CNNs are seamlessly integrated into an end-to-end compression framework. The first CNN, named compact convolutional neural network (ComCNN), learns an optimal compact representation from an input image, which preserves the structural information and is then encoded using an image codec (e.g., JPEG, JPEG2000 or BPG). The second CNN, named reconstruction convolutional neural network (RecCNN), is used to reconstruct the decoded image with high-quality in the decoding end. To make two CNNs effectively collaborate, we develop a unified end-to-end learning algorithm to simultaneously learn ComCNN and RecCNN, which facilitates the accurate reconstruction of the decoded image using RecCNN. Such a design also makes the proposed compression framework compatible with existing image coding standards. Experimental results validate that the proposed compression framework greatly outperforms several compression frameworks that use existing image coding standards with state-of-the-art deblocking or denoising post-processing methods.

A Functional Package for Automatic Solution of Ordinary Differential Equations with Spectral Methods

We present a Python module named PyCheb, to solve the ordinary differential equations by using spectral collocation method. PyCheb incorporates discretization using Chebyshev points, barycentric interpolation and iterate methods. With this Python module, users can initialize the ODEsolver class by passing attributes, including the both sides of a given differential equation, boundary conditions, and the number of Chebyshev points, which can also be generated automatically by the ideal precision, to the constructor of ODEsolver class. Then, the instance of the ODEsolver class can be used to automatically determine the resolution of the differential equation as well as generate the graph of the high-precision approximate solution. Improved Total Variation based Image Compressive Sensing Recovery by Nonlocal Regularization

Recently, total variation (TV) based minimization algorithms have achieved great success in compressive sensing (CS) recovery for natural images due to its virtue of preserving edges. However, the use of TV is not able to recover the fine details and textures, and often suffers from undesirable staircase artifact. To reduce these effects, this letter presents an improved TV based image CS recovery algorithm by introducing a new nonlocal regularization constraint into CS optimization problem. The nonlocal regularization is built on the well known nonlocal means (NLM) filtering and takes advantage of self-similarity in images, which helps to suppress the staircase effect and restore the fine details. Furthermore, an efficient augmented Lagrangian based algorithm is developed to solve the above combined TV and nonlocal regularization constrained problem. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves significant performance improvements over the state-of-the-art TV based algorithm in both PSNR and visual perception.
