The Jet Power and Emission Line Correlations of Radio Loud Optically Selected Quasars

In this Letter, the properties of the extended radio emission form SDSS DR7 quasars with $0.4 $ 20 - 30 kpc). The frequency of quasars with FR II level extended radio emission is $\approx 2.3%$ and $>0.4%$ of quasars have FR I level extended radio emission. The lower limit simply reflects the flux density limit of the survey. The distribution of the long term time averaged jet powers of these quasars, $\bar{Q}$, has a broad peak $\sim 3\times 10^{44}$ ergs/sec that turns over below below $10^{44}$ ergs/sec and sources above $10^{45}$ ergs/sec are extremely rare. It is found that the correlation between the bolometric (total thermal) luminosity of the accretion flow, $L_{bol}$, and $\bar{Q}$ is not strong. The correlation of $\bar{Q}$ with narrow line luminosity is stronger than the correlation with broad line luminosity and the continuum luminosity. It is therefore concluded that previous interpretations of correlations of $\bar{Q}$ with narrow line strengths in radio galaxies as a direct correlation of jet power and accretion power have been overstated. It is explained why this interpretation mistakenly overlooks the sizeable fraction of sources with weak accretion luminosity and powerful jets discovered by Ogle et al (2006).

Calibrating Emission Lines as Quasar Bolometers

Historically, emission lines have been considered a valuable tool for estimating the bolometric thermal luminosity of the accretion flow in AGN, $L_{bol}$. We study the reliability of this method by comparing line strengths to the optical/UV continuum luminosity of SDSS DR7 radio quiet quasars with $0.4<z<0.8$. We find formulae for $L_{bol}$ as a function of single line strengths for the broad components of H$β$ and Mg II, as well as the narrow lines of [O III] and [O II]. We determine the standard errors of the formulae that are fitted to the data. Our new estimators are shown to be more accurate than archival line strength estimations in the literature. It is demonstrated that the broad lines are superior estimators of the continuum luminosity (and $L_{bol}$) with $Hβ$ being the most reliable. The fidelity of the each of the estimators is determined in the context of the SDSS DR7 radio loud quasars as an illustrative application of our results. In general, individual researchers can use our results as a tool to help decide if a particular line strength provides an adequate estimate of $L_{bol}$ for their purposes. Finally, it is shown that considering all four line strength, simultaneously, can yield information on both $L_{bol}$ and the radio jet power.

H$β$ Line Widths as an Orientation Indicator for Low-Ionization Broad Absorption Line Quasars

There is evidence from radio-loud quasars to suggest that the distribution of the H$β$ broad emission line (BEL) gas is arranged in a predominantly planar orientation, and this result may well also apply to radio-quiet quasars. This would imply that the observed full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the H$β$ BELs is dependent on the orientation of the line of sight to the gas. If this view is correct then we propose that the FWHM can be used as a surrogate, in large samples, to determine the line of sight to the H$β$ BELs in broad absorption line quasars (BALQSOs).... It is determined that there is a statistically significant excess of narrow line profiles in the SDSS DR7 archival spectra of low ionization broad absorption line quasars (LoBALQSOs), indicating that BAL gas flowing close to the equatorial plane does not commonly occur in these sources. We also find that the data is not well represented by random lines of sight to the BAL gas. Our best fit indicates two classes of LoBALQSOs, the majority ($\approx 2/3$) are polar outflows, that are responsible for the enhanced frequency of narrow line profiles, and the remainder are equatorial outflows. We further motivated the line of sight explanation of the narrow line excess in LoBALQSOs by considering the notion that the skewed distribution of line profiles is driven by an elevated Eddington ratio in BALQSOs. We constructed a variety of control samples comprised of nonLoBALQSOs matched to a de-reddened LoBALQSO sample in redshift, luminosity, black hole mass and Eddington ratio. It is demonstrated that the excess of narrow profiles persists within the LoBALQSO sample relative to each of the control samples with no reduction of the statistical significance. Thus, we eliminate the possibility that the excess narrow lines seen in the LoBALQSOs arise from an enhanced Eddington ratio.

Low-z MgII Broad Absorption-Line Quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

We present a sample of 68 low-z MgII low-ionization broad absorption-line (loBAL) quasars. The sample is uniformly selected from the SDSS5 according to the following criteria: (1) 0.4 7, and (3) MgII absorption-line width > 1600 \kms. The last criterion is a trade-off between the completeness and consistency with respect to the canonical definition of BAL quasars that have the `balnicity index' BI>0 in CIV BAL. We adopted such a criterion to ensure that ~90% of our sample are classical BAL quasars and the completeness is ~80%, based on extensive tests using high-z quasar samples with measurements of both CIV and MgII BALs. We found (1) MgII BAL is more frequently detected in quasars with narrower Hbeta emission-line, weaker [OIII] emission-line, stronger optical FeII multiplets and higher luminosity. In term of fundamental physical parameters of a black hole accretion system, loBAL fraction is significantly higher in quasars with a higher Eddington ratio than those with a lower Eddington ratio. The fraction is not dependent on the black hole mass in the range concerned. The overall fraction distribution is broad, suggesting a large range of covering factor of the absorption material. (2) [OIII]-weak loBAL quasars averagely show undetected [NeV] emission line and a very small line ratio of [NeV] to [OIII]. However, the line ratio in non-BAL quasars, which is much larger than that in [OIII]-weak loBAL quasars, is independent of the strength of the [OIII] line. (3) loBAL and non-loBAL quasars have similar colors in near-infrared to optical band but different colors in ultraviolet. (4) Quasars with MgII absorption lines of intermediate width are indistinguishable from the non-loBAL quasars in optical emission line properties but their colors are similar to loBAL quasars, redder than non-BAL quasars. We also discuss the implication of these results.

Goldbach Conjecture and the least prime number in an arithmetic progression

In this Note, we try to study the relations between the Goldbach Conjecture and the least prime number in an arithmetic progression. We give a new weakened form of the Goldbach Conjecture. We prove that this weakened form and a weakened form of the Chowla Hypothesis imply that every sufficiently large even integer may be written as the sum of two distinct primes.

Euclid's Number-Theoretical Work

When people mention the mathematical achievements of Euclid, his geometrical achievements always spring to mind. But, his Number-Theoretical achievements (See Books 7, 8 and 9 in his magnum opus \emph{Elements} [1]) are rarely spoken. The object of this paper is to affirm the number-theoretical role of Euclid and the historical significance of Euclid's algorithm. It is known that almost all elementary number-theoretical texts begin with Division algorithm. However, Euclid did not do like this. He began his number-theoretical work by introducing his algorithm. We were quite surprised when we began to read the \emph{Elements} for the first time. Nevertheless, one can prove that Euclid's algorithm is essentially equivalent with the Bezout's equation and Division algorithm. Therefore, Euclid has preliminarily established Theory of Divisibility and the greatest common divisor. This is the foundation of Number Theory. After more than 2000 years, by creatively introducing the notion of congruence, Gauss published his \emph{Disquisitiones Arithmeticae} in 1801 and developed Number Theory as a systematic science. Note also that Euclid's algorithm implies Euclid's first theorem (which is the heart of `the uniqueness part' of the fundamental theorem of arithmetic) and Euclid's second theorem (which states that there are infinitely many primes). Thus, in the nature of things, Euclid's algorithm is the most important number-theoretical work of Euclid. For this reason, we further summarize briefly the influence of Euclid's algorithm. Knuth said `we might call Euclid's method the granddaddy of all algorithms'. Based on our discussion and analysis, it leads to the conclusion Euclid's algorithm is the greatest number-theoretical achievement of the Euclidean age.

The problem of the least prime number in an arithmetic progression and its applications to Goldbach's conjecture

The problem of the least prime number in an arithmetic progression is one of the most important topics in Number Theory. In [11], we are the first to study the relations between this problem and Goldbach's conjecture. In this paper, we further consider its applications to Goldbach's conjecture and refine the result in [11]. Moreover, we also try to generalize the problem of the least prime number in an arithmetic progression and give an analogy of Goldbach's conjecture.

On the Infinitude of Some Special Kinds of Primes

The aim of this paper is to try to establish a generic model for the problem that several multivariable number-theoretic functions represent simultaneously primes for infinitely many integral points. More concretely, we introduced briefly the research background-the history and current situation-from Euclid's second theorem to Green-Tao theorem. We analyzed some equivalent necessary conditions that irreducible univariable polynomials with integral coefficients represent infinitely many primes, found new necessary conditions which perhaps imply that there are only finitely many Fermat primes, obtained an analogy of the Chinese Remainder Theorem, generalized Euler's function, the prime-counting function and Schinzel-Sierpinski's Conjecture and so on. Nevertheless, this is only a beginning and it miles to go. We hope that number theorists consider further it.

Dickson's conjecture on $Z^n$--An equivalent form of Green-Tao's conjecture

In [1], we give Dickson's conjecture on $N^n$. In this paper, we further give Dickson's conjecture on $Z^n$ and obtain an equivalent form of Green-Tao's conjecture [2]. Based on our work, it is possible to establish a general theory that several multivariable integral polynomials on $Z^n$ represent simultaneously prime numbers for infinitely many integral points and generalize the analogy of Chinese Remainder Theorem in [3].

Estimating Black Hole Masses in Active Galactic Nuclei Using the MgII 2800 Emission Line

We investigate the relationship between the linewidths of broad Mg II \lambda2800 and Hbeta in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to refine them as tools to estimate black hole (BH) masses. We perform a detailed spectral analysis of a large sample of AGNs at intermediate redshifts selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, along with a smaller sample of archival ultraviolet spectra for nearby sources monitored with reverberation mapping. Careful attention is devoted to accurate spectral decomposition, especially in the treatment of narrow-line blending and Fe II contamination. We show that, contrary to popular belief, the velocity width of Mg II tends to be smaller than that of Hbeta, suggesting that the two species are not cospatial in the broad-line region. Using these findings and recently updated BH mass measurements from reverberation mapping, we present a new calibration of the empirical prescriptions for estimating virial BH masses for AGNs using the broad Mg II and Hbeta lines. We show that the BH masses derived from our new formalisms show subtle but important differences compared to some of the mass estimators currently used in the literature.

Notes on Dickson's Conjecture

In 1904, Dickson [5] stated a very important conjecture. Now people call it Dickson's conjecture. In 1958, Schinzel and Sierpinski [14] generalized Dickson's conjecture to the higher order integral polynomial case. However, they did not generalize Dickson's conjecture to the multivariable case. In 2006, Green and Tao [13] considered Dickson's conjecture in the multivariable case and gave directly a generalized Hardy-Littlewood estimation. But, the precise Dickson's conjecture in the multivariable case does not seem to have been formulated. In this paper, based on the idea in [15], we will try to complement this and give an equivalent form of Dickson's Conjecture, furthermore, generalize it to the multivariable case or a system of affine-linear forms on $N^k$ . We also give some remarks and evidences on conjectures in [15]. Finally, in Appendix, we briefly introduce the basic theory that several multivariable integral polynomials represent simultaneously prime numbers for infinitely many integral points.

The concept of primes and the algorithm for counting the greatest common divisor in Ancient China

When people mention the number theoretical achievements in Ancient China, the famous Chinese Remainder Theorem always springs to mind. But, two more of them--the concept of primes and the algorithm for counting the greatest common divisor, are rarely spoken. Some scholars even think that Ancient China has not the concept of primes. The aim of this paper is to show that the concept of primes in Ancient China can be traced back to the time of Confuciusor (about 500 B.C.) or more ago. This implies that the concept of primes in Ancient China is much earlier than the concept of primes in Euclid's \emph{Elements}(about 300 B.C.) of Ancient Greece. We also shows that the algorithm for counting the greatest common divisor in Ancient China is essentially the Euclidean algorithm or the binary gcd algorithm. Donald E. Knuth said that "the binary gcd algorithm was discovered by J. Stein in 1961". Nevertheless, Knuth was wrong. The ancient Chinese algorithm is clearly much earlier than J. Stein's algorithm.

W Sequences and the Distribution of Primes in Short Interval

Based on Euclid's algorithm, we find a kind of special sequences which play an interesting role in the study of primes. We call them W Sequences. They not only ties up the distribution of primes in short interval but also enables us to give new weakened forms of many classical problems in Number Theory. The object of this paper is to provide a brief introduction and preliminary analysis on this kind of special sequences.

On a Weakened Form of Polignac Conjecture

Polignac [1] conjectured that for every even natural number $2k (k\geq1)$, there exist infinitely many consecutive primes $p_n$ and $p_{n+1}$ such that $p_{n+1}-p_n=2k$. A weakened form of this conjecture states that for every $k\geq1$, there exist infinitely many primes $p$ and $q$ such that $p-q=2k$. Clearly, the weakened form of Polignac's conjecture implies that there exists an infinite sequence of positive integers $x_1,x_2,...,x_m,...$ such that $x_1 (2k+x_1),x_2 (2k+x_2),...,x_m (2k+x_m)...$ are pairwise relatively prime. In this note, we obtain a slightly stronger result than this necessary condition. This enables us to find a common property on some special kinds of number-theoretic functions (such as $2^x -1 $) which likely represent infinitely many primes by rich literatures and a lot of research reports. However, the function $2^{2^x}+1$ does not have this property. Does it imply that the number of Fermat primes is finite? Hardy and Wright [7] conjectured that the number of Fermat primes is finite. Nevertheless, they did not give any reasons and explanations. By factoring Fermat number, many people believe that the conjecture in [7] holds. Does our work explain this phenomenon? We will consider further this problem in another paper. Based on our work, one could give a new sufficient condition that there are an infinite number of twin primes (Sophie-Germain primes or Mersenne primes).

Generalizations of an Ancient Greek Inequality about the Sequence of Primes

In this note, we generalize an ancient Greek inequality about the sequence of primes to the cases of arithmetic progressions even multivariable polynomials with integral coefficients. We also refine Bouniakowsky's conjecture [16] and Conjecture 2 in [22]. Moreover, we give two remarks on conjectures in [22]
