Scalar Charges in a Self-Dual Background

In this work, we present a \(3+1d\) scalar QED model in a constant self-dual magnetic field configuration. We provide exact closed form analytic calculations of the partition function, the \(\beta\)-function, and the propagators. To our knowledge, we present the first closed-form finite expression for the matter field propagators in a self-dual background, which is made accessible by working entirely in the Landau level basis. This theory serves as a toy model for charged particles in parallel electric and magnetic fields, with natural extensions to studies of \(3+1d\) chiral magnetic effects and pulsar physics.

Ghost Hunting in the Yang-Mills Vacuum

In this work, I analyze the zero modes of a one-loop semiclassical Yang-Mills theory in \(3+1\)d. I find that zero modes are generated by gauge redundancy of the background field. Proper gauge fixing, achieved by introducing a bosonic ghost term, together with zeta-function regularization, yields a finite one-loop effective action in closed form that reproduces the well-known one-loop Yang-Mills beta function.

An Analytic Yang-Mills Vacuum Calculation in $3+1d$

I present a novel analytic framework for $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory in the four-dimensional continuum. Background and effective field theory techniques are used to include non-perturbative contributions from cubic and quartic interactions. This approach is inspired by Savvidy who claims first-order contributions from quartic interactions stabilize IR divergence found at one-loop order, making possible IR finite Yang-Mills calculations. I assess the validity of this claim and discuss the implications of my findings.

Vanishing Polyakov Loop for QCD with Twelve Massless Quarks

We consider continuum-formulation QCD in four dimensions with twelve massless fundamental quark flavors. Splitting the SU(\(N\)) gauge field into background and fluctuation parts, we use well-developed techniques to calculate the one-loop effective action for the theory. We find that for constant self-dual background field-strength tensor the notorious infrared divergences of the effective action cancel between gauge and matter sectors if the number of massless quark flavors is exactly . The ultraviolet divergencies of the effective action are non-perturbatively renormalized with a $\beta$-function that matches the known perturbative result in the high energy limit. The resulting UV- and IR-finite effective action possesses a non-trivial saddle which has lower free energy than the perturbative vacuum, and for which the expectation value of the Polyakov loop vanishes. Inclusion of finite temperature effects points to the presence of a first-order phase transition to the perturbative vacuum with a calculable critical temperature.

A Fully Solvable Model of Fermionic Interaction in $3+1d$

Recently, Romatschke found that the poles in $O(N)$ scalar theories do not affect observables such as temperature and pressure. Romatschke went on to show this result holds for marginal, relevant, and irrelevant operators in $3+1d$ $(O(N)$ scalar theories. We continue in this direction by studying large-$N$ fermi-interactions in $3+1d$. To do so, we produce a model of marginally coupled fermi-interactions which is fully renormalizable at large-$N$. This theory contains poles in the running coupling, however we argue these poles do not affect any physical observables. Further, our theory contains first order phase transition which separates a stable, meta-stable, and unstable phase.

Interacting CFTs for all couplings: Thermal versus Entanglement Entropy at Large $N$

In this paper, I calculate the large $N$ limit of marginal $O(N)$ models with non-polynomial potentials in arbitrary odd dimensions $d$. This results in a new class of interacting pure conformal field theories (CFTs) in $d=3+4n$ for any $n \in \mathbb{Z}_+$. Similarly, in $d=3+4n$ I calculate the thermal entropy for all couplings on $R^{2+4n} \times S^1$ for $n=0,1,2,3$. In 2+1 dimensions I find the strong-to-weak coupling ratio of the thermal entropy to be 4/5, matching recent results, and further extend this analysis to higher odd dimensions. Next, I calculated the vacuum entanglement entropy $s^d_{\text{EE}}$ on $S^{d-2}$ for all couplings in arbitrary odd $d$ in the large N limit. I find the vacuum entanglement entropy on $S^{d-2}$ to be not only solvable but also constant for all couplings $\lambda$. Thus, in the large $N$ limit, the vacuum entanglement entropy on $S^{d-2}$ for odd $d$ is constant for all $\lambda$, in contrast to the thermal entropy which is shown to also be monotonically decreasing with $\lambda$ in $d=3+4n$.
