Quantum dominance of coherent bremsstrahlung in $^{124}$Sn + $^{124}$Sn scattering at 25 MeV/u

We present quantum-mechanical calculations of bremsstrahlung in the $^{124}$Sn + $^{124}$Sn at 25 MeV/u reproducing the measured photon spectrum over the full energy range. For the first time, we quantitatively determine the incoherent-to-coherent ratio in the photon spectrum. This ratio is extremely small, ranging from $10^{-11}$ to $10^{-4}$, which demonstrates that coherent emission dominates throughout the measured energy range. This behavior is in sharp contrast to proton-nucleus scattering, where incoherent emission dominates because of the leading role of nucleon magnetic moments. This contrast is illustrated by the TAPS Collaboration data for $p + ^{197}{\rm Au}$ collisions at a proton beam energy of 190 MeV, where the corresponding ratio reaches $10^{3}$-$10^{5}$. We find that incoherent-to-coherent ratios explain the difference between the two spectra in unified picture: (1) In proton--nucleus scattering, the spectrum contains a pronounced hump, (2) In $^{124}$Sn + $^{124}$Sn scattering, the spectrum decreases monotonically and has a nearly logarithmic shape. Our results identify a previously unexplored quantum regime of bremsstrahlung emission in nuclear reactions and open a new route for studying coherent effects in heavy-ion collisions.

Bremsstrahlung emission accompanying ternary fission of \isotope[252]{Cf}

\textbf{Background} In ternary fission, bremsstrahlung photons are emitted but those have never been studied yet theoretically and experimentally. In other reactions, bremsstrahlung has been studied for a long time. \textbf{Purpose} To clarify which new information about ternary fission can be obtained from study of bremsstrahlung emission accompanying the ternary fission of \isotope[252]{Cf}. \textbf{Methods} A new quantum model of emission of bremsstrahlung photons accompanying ternary fission of heavy nuclei with $α$-particle as light charged particle is developed. The model takes into account geometry and dynamics of ternary fission. \textbf{Results} We present the theoretical results on the bremsstrahlung emission in the ternary fission of the \isotope[252]{Cf} nucleus. High sensitivity of the bremsstrahlung spectra is established by the model concerning to the following aspects of the ternary fission, and the theoretical calcualtions are in agreement with the preliminary experimental data. It is found that: (a) Photons are emitted with highest intensity in case of perpendicular motion of the $α$\,particle concerning to fission axis; (b) Relative motion between heavy fragments reinforces significantly bremsstrahlung, leaving of $α$-particle concerning to system of heavy fragments is less important; (c) Relative motion between two heavy fragments is faster, bremsstrahlung is more intensive. \textbf{Conclusions} Theoretical study of bremsstrahlung in ternary fission of the \isotope[252]{Cf} nucleus shows high sensitivity of bremsstrahlung spectra on the geometry and dynamics of ternary fission process. It is expected that new information can be obtained by the model when new experimental measurements of bremsstrahlung in ternary fission of the \isotope[252]{Cf} nucleus are available.

Manifestation of quark effects in nuclei via bremsstrahlung analysis in the proton-nucleus scattering

\textbf{Background} (1) The incoherent emission of photons is dominant comparing to coherent one in proton-nucleus scattering. The incoherent bremsstrahlung is very sensitive to the magnetic moments of nucleons in nuclei. (2) According to the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model, the nucleon magnetic moments in nuclei are enhanced relative to those in vacuum, originating from the quark structure of nucleons. \textbf{Purpose} Investigate possibilities of observing quark effects in nuclei by the analysis of bremsstrahlung in nuclear reactions. \textbf{Methods} Analyse the bremsstrahlung cross sections with established model in proton-nucleus scattering, by extending with inclusion of in-medium modified nucleon magnetic moments in nuclei by the QMC model. \textbf{Results} (1) After calibrating the model without the quark effects for experimental data (TAPS Collaboration data for $p + \isotope[197]{Au}$), we calculate the cross sections and observe the slight difference between the spectra for models with and without quark effects. Such result is found for the first time, confirming possibilities of observing the quark effects in the spectra of bremsstrahlung. (2) As found, quark effects are not enough to be observed in middle and heavy nuclei, as they have dominant incoherent contributions. (3) \isotope[18]{C} has minimal incoherent contribution concerning other carbon isotopes, where the quark effects should be minimal. In ratios between the spectra for \isotope[18]{C} and \isotope[12]{C} with and without the quark effects the difference is clearly observed. \textbf{Conclusions} We establish the new physical observable for the quark effects in nuclei in the bremsstrahlung accompanied in the nuclear reactions, which can be measured. The present suggestion is for the first time in both theoretically and experimentally to study the quark effects in nuclei via the bremsstrahlung.

Structure of nuclei in dileptons production in proton-nucleus scattering

We investigate production of electron-positron pairs (dileptons) in the scattering of protons off nuclei. Focus is directed on clarifying role of nuclear interactions which make basis in mechanisms of scattering process and structure of nuclei. For that, we constructed a new model of production of dileptons, where scattering of nuclei and their structure are described on the basis of quantum mechanics. Cross sections of dilepton production are calculated in the scattering of protons on \isotope[9]{B} at energy of proton beam of 2.1~GeV. Tendency of the calculated full spectrum is in good agreement with experimental data of DLS Collaboration. Contribution of incoherent processes has a leading role in production of dileptons in comparison with coherent one. In our model calculated cross section of dileptons is sensitive to nuclear part of potential of interactions between proton and nucleus in scattering. Influence of structure of nucleus on calculations of cross sections of production of dileptons is essential. This result provides save basis for new opportunity to extract new information about structure of nuclei, nuclear part of potential from experimental data of dileptons at studied energies of proton beam.

Nucleon microscopy in proton-nucleus scattering via analysis of bremsstrahlung emission: role of incoherent emission

We study electromagnetic form factors of protons in proton-nucleus scattering via analysing of experimental cross-sections of accompanying bremsstrahlung photons. A new bremsstrahlung model for proton-nucleus scattering is developed, where a main focus is given on incoherent bremsstrahlung that has not been considered previously. In analysis we choose experimental bremsstrahlung data of $p$ + $^{197}$Au scattering at proton beam energy of 190 MeV obtained by TAPS collaboration. We find the following. (1) Inclusion of incoherent emission to calculations improves agreements with experimental data essentially, contribution of incoherent bremsstrahlung is essentially larger than coherent one. (2) Inclusion of form factors of the scattered proton improves agreement with experimental data in comparison with calculations with coherent and incoherent contributions without form factors. (3) Sensitivity of model in study of form factors of the scattered proton is high. This demonstrates a new opportunity to study internal structure of protons under influence of nuclear forces in nuclear scattering.

Incoherent processes in dileptons production in proton-nucleus scattering at high energies

$\mathbf{Purpose}$: Incoherent processes in production of lepton pairs in the scattering of protons off nuclei are investigated. $\mathbf{Methods}$: New quantum mechanical model is constructed which uses generalization of the nuclear model of emission of photons in the proton-nucleus reactions in region from low up to high energies with inclusion of formalism of production of lepton pairs. $\mathbf{Results}$: (1) Model with the coherent matrix elements is tested for the scattering of protons on the Be nuclei at energy of proton beam $E_{\rm p}$ of 2.1 GeV. The calculated cross section of production of lepton pairs is in good agreement with experimental data obtained by DLS Collaboration. (2) We analyzed dilepton production for nuclei-targets $\isotope[9]{Be}$, $\isotope[12]{C}$, $\isotope[16]{O}$, $\isotope[24]{Mg}$, $\isotope[44]{Ca}$, $\isotope[197]{Au}$ at $E_{\rm p}=2.1$ GeV. Coherent cross sections of dilepton production are monotonously decreased with increasing of nucleus-target mass. (3) Production of lepton pairs is more intensive at larger $E_{\rm p}$. (4) For $p + \isotope{9}Be$ at $E_{\rm p}=2.1$ GeV we analyzed role of incoherent processes in production of pairs of leptons. Inclusion of incoherent proton-nucleon processes to the model improves agreement with experimental data a little. (5) Adding of the longitudinal amplitude of virtual photon suppresses the cross section of dilepton production a little. (6) The incoherent contribution has a leading role in dilepton production (ratio between incoherent and coherent contributions is 10-100). Model provides the full spectrum for $p + \isotope[93]{Nb}$ at $E_{\rm p}=3.5$ GeV in good agreement with experimental data of HADES collaboration, shows large role of incoherent processes. Conclusion: Results above confirms importance of incoherent processes in study of dilepton production in this reaction.

Probing high-momentum component in nucleon momentum distribution by neutron-proton bremsstrahlung γ-rays in heavy ion reactions

The high momentum tail (HMT) of nucleons, as a signature of the short-range correlations in nuclei, has been investigated by the high-energy bremsstrahlung $γ$ rays produced in $^{86}$Kr + $^{124}$Sn at 25 MeV/u. The energetic photons are measured by a CsI(Tl) hodoscope mounted on the spectrometer CSHINE. The energy spectrum above 30 MeV can be reproduced by the IBUU model calculations incorporating the photon production channel from $np$ process in which the HMTs of nucleons is considered. A non-zero HMT ratio of about $15\%$ is favored by the data. The effect of the capture channel $np \to dγ$ is demonstrated.

Synthesis of elements in compact stars in pycnonuclear reactions with Carbon isotopes: Quasibound states versus states of zero-points vibrations

(1) Purpose: Conditions of formation of compound nuclear system needed for synthesis of heavy nuclei in pycnonuclear reactions in compact stars are studied on a quantum mechanical basis. (2) Methods: Method of multiple internal reflections is generalized for pycnoreactions in compact stars with new calculations of quasibound spectra and spectra of zero-point vibrations. (3) Results: Peculiarities of the method are analyzed for reaction with isotopes of Carbon. The developed method takes into account continuity and conservation of quantum flux (describing pycnonuclear reaction) inside the full spacial region of reaction including nuclear region. This gives appearance of new states (called as quasibound states), in which compound nuclear systems of Magnesium are formed with the largest probability. These states have not been studied yet in synthesis of elements in stars. Energy spectra of zero-point vibrations and spectra of quasibound states are estimated with high precision for reactions with isotopes of Carbon. At the first time influence of plasma screening on quasibound states and states of zero-point vibrations in pycnonuclear reactions has been studied. (4) Conclusion: The probability of formation of compound nuclear system in quasibound states in pycnonuclear reaction is essentially larger than the probability of formation of this system in states of zero-point vibrations studied by Zel'dovich and followers. So, synthesis of Magnesium from isotopes of Carbon is more probable through the quasibound states than through the states of zero-point vibrations in compact stars. Energy spectra of zero-point vibrations are changed essentially after taking plasma screening into account. Analysis shows that from all studied isotopes of Magnesium only \isotope[24]{Mg} is stable after synthesis at energy of relative motion of 4.881~MeV of incident nuclei \isotope[12]{C}.

Quantum design in study of pycnonuclear reactions in compact stars and new quasibound states

Pycnonuclear reactions in the compact stars at zero temperatures are studied on quantum mechanical basis in the paper. Formalism of multiple internal reflections is generalized for analysis, that was developed for nuclear decays and captures by nuclei with high precision and tests. For the chosen reaction $^{12}$C + $^{12}$C = $^{24}$Mg, we find the following. A quantum study of the pycnonuclear reaction requires a complete analysis of quantum fluxes in the internal nuclear region. This reduces rate and number of pycnonuclear reactions by 1.8 times. This leads to the appearance of new states (called as quasibound states) where the compound nuclear system is formed with maximal probability. As shown, minimal energy of such a state is a little higher than energy of zero-point vibrations in lattice sites in pycnonuclear reaction, however probability of formation of compound system at the quasibound state is essentially larger than the corresponding probability at state of zero-point vibrations. Hence, there is a sense to tell about reaction rates in such quasibound states as more probable, rather than states of zero-point vibrations. This can lead to the essential changes in estimation of the rates of nuclear reactions in stars.

Enhancement of incoherent bremsstrahlung in proton-nucleus scattering in the $Δ$-resonance energy region

We investigate emission of the bremsstrahlung photons in the scattering of protons off nuclei at the $Δ$-resonance energy region. Including properties of $Δ$-resonance in the nucleus-target to the bremsstrahlung model, we find the following. (1) Ratio between incoherent emission and coherent emission is about $10^{6}$--$10^{7}$ for $p + \isotope[197]{Au}$ (without $Δ$-resonance) at energy of proton beam $E_{\rm p}$ of 190~MeV, where the calculated full bremsstrahlung spectrum is in good agreement with experimental data. This confirms importance of incoherent processes in study of $Δ$-resonances in this reaction, which have never been studied yet. We estimate coherent and incoherent contributions, electric and magnetic contributions, full bremsstrahlung spectra for the scattering of protons on the \isotope[12]{C}, \isotope[40]{Ca}, \isotope[208]{Pb} nuclei at $E_{\rm p}=800$~MeV, we find conditions for the most intensive bremsstrahlung emission. (2) Transition $p\,N \to Δ^{+} N$ in the nucleus-target reinforces emission of bremsstrahlung photons in that reaction at $E_{\rm p}=800$~MeV. Difference between the spectra for normal nuclei and nuclei with included $Δ$-resonance is larger for more light nuclei, but the spectra are larger for heavier nuclei. (3) Taking into account shortly lived state of $Δ$-resonance, we find that the spectrum with $Δ$-resonance in the nucleus-target is essentially larger in the high energy photon region than the spectrum without this $Δ$-resonance (corresponding calculations for \isotope[12][Δ]{C}, \isotope[40][Δ]{Ca}, \isotope[208][Δ]{Pb} in comparison with \isotope[12]{C}, \isotope[40]{Ca}, \isotope[208]{Pb} are provided). Such an aspect is recommended for registration of $Δ$-resonances in nuclei in possible future experiments.

Bremsstrahlung emission from nuclear reactions in compact stars

Bremsstrahlung emission of photons during nuclear reactions inside dense stellar medium is investigated in the paper. For that, a new model of nucleus is developed, where nuclear forces combine nucleons as bound system in dependence on deep location inside compact star. A polytropic model of stars at index $n=3$ with densities characterized from white dwarf to neutron star is used. Bremsstrahlung formalism and calculations are well tested on existed experimental information for scattering of protons of light nuclei in Earth. We find the following. (1) In neutron stars a phenomenon of dissociation of nucleus is observed --- its disintegration on individual nucleons, starting from some critical distance between this nucleus and center of star with high density. We do not observe such a phenomenon in white dwarfs. (2) In the white dwarfs, influence of stellar medium imperceptibly affects on bremsstrahlung photons. Also, we have accurate description of bremsstrahlung photons in nuclear reactions in Sun. (3) For neutron stars, influence of stellar medium is essentially more intensive and it crucially changes the bremsstrahlung spectrum. The most intensive emission is from bowel of the star, while the weakest emission is from periphery.

Search of cluster structure in nuclei via analysis of bremsstrahlung emission

We investigate emission of bremsstrahlung photons during scattering of $α$-particles off nuclei. For that, we construct bremsstrahlung model for $α$-nucleus scattering, where a new formalism for coherent and incoherent bremsstrahlung emissions in elastic scattering and mechanisms in inelastic scattering is added. Basing of this approach, we analyze experimental bremsstrahlung cross-sections in the scattering of $α$-particles off the \isotope[59]{Co}, \isotope[116]{Sn}, \isotope[\rm nat]{Ag} and \isotope[197]{Au} nuclei at 50 MeV of $α$-particles beam measured at the Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre, Calcutta. We observe oscillations in the calculated spectra for elastic scattering for each nucleus. But, for \isotope[59]{Co}, \isotope[116]{Sn} and \isotope[\rm nat]{Ag} we obtain good agreement between calculated coherent spectrum with incoherent contribution for elastic scattering with experimental data in the full photon energy region. For heavy nucleus \isotope[197]{Au} we find that (1) Oscillating behavior of the calculated spectrum of coherent emission in elastic scattering is in disagreement with experimental data, (2) Inclusion of incoherent emission improves description of the data, but summarized spectrum is in satisfactory agreement with the experimental data. To understand unknown modification of wave function for scattering, we add new mechanisms of inelastic scattering to calculations and extract information about unknown new amplitude of such mechanisms from experimental data analysis. This amplitude has maxima at some energies, that characterizes existence of states of the most compact structures (clusters) in nucleus-target. We explain origin of oscillations in the bremsstrahlung spectra for elastic scattering (at first time). New information about coherent and incoherent contributions is extracted for studied reactions.

Nucleon microscopy in proton-nucleus scattering via analysis of bremsstrahlung emission

We investigate an idea, how to use analysis of the bremsstrahlung photons to study the internal structure of proton under nuclear reaction with nucleus. A new model is constructed to describe bremsstrahlung emission of photons which accompanies the scattering of protons off nuclei. Our bremsstrahlung formalism uses many-nucleon basis that allows to analyze coherent and incoherent bremsstrahlung emissions. As scattered proton can be under the influence of strong forces and produces the largest bremsstrahlung contribution to full spectrum, we focus on accurate determination of its quantum evolution concerning nucleus basing on quantum mechanics and scattering theory. For such a motivation, we at first time generalize Pauli equation with interacting potential describing evolution of fermion inside strong field, with including the electromagnetic form-factors of nucleon basing on DIS theory. Anomalous magnetic momenta of nucleons reinforce our motivation to develop such a formalism, starting from low energy. The full bremsstrahlung spectrum in our model (after renormalization) is dependent on form-factors of the scattered proton. For calculations, we choose the scattering of $p + ^{197}{\rm Au}$ at proton beam energy of 190~MeV, where experimental bremsstrahlung data were obtained with high accuracy. We show that the full bremsstrahlung spectrum is sensitive to the form-factors of the scattered proton. In the limit without such form-factors, we reconstruct our previous result (where internal structure of the scattered proton was not studied).

What can we know about hypernuclei via analysis of bremsstrahlung photons?

We investigate possibility of emission of the bremsstrahlung photons in nuclear reactions with hypernuclei for the first time. A new model of the bremsstrahlung emission which accompanies interactions between $α$ particles and hypernuclei is constructed, where a new formalism for the magnetic momenta of nucleons and hyperon inside hypernucleus is added. For first calculations, we choose $α$ decay of the normal nucleus $^{210}{\rm Po}$ and the hypernucleus $^{211}_Λ{\rm Po}$. We find that (1) emission for the hypernucleus $^{211}_Λ{\rm Po}$ is larger than for normal nucleus $^{210}{\rm Po}$, (2) difference between these spectra is small. We propose a way how to find hypernuclei, where role of hyperon is the most essential in emission of bremsstrahlung photons during $α$ decay. As demonstration of such a property, we show that the spectra for the hypernuclei $^{107}_Λ{\rm Te}$ and $^{109}_Λ{\rm Te}$ are essentially larger than the spectra for the normal nuclei $^{106}{\rm Te}$ and $^{108}{\rm Te}$. Such a difference is explained by additional contribution of emission to the full bremsstrahlung, which is formed by magnetic moment of hyperon inside hypernucleus. The bremsstrahlung emission formed by such a mechanism, is of the magnetic type. A new formula for fast estimations of bremsstrahlung spectra for even-even hypernuclei is proposed, where role of magnetic moment of hyperon of hypernucleus in formation of the bremsstrahlung emission is shown explicitly. Such an analysis opens possibility of new experimental study of properties of hypernuclei via bremsstrahlung study.

Manifestation of important role of nuclear forces in emission of photons in scattering of pions off nuclei

Bremsstrahlung of photons emitted during the scattering of $π^{+}$-mesons off nuclei is studied for the first time. Role of interactions between $π^{+}$-mesons and nuclei in the formation of the bremsstrahlung emission is analyzed in details. We discover essential contribution of emitted photons from nuclear part of Johnson-Satchler potential to the full spectrum, in contrast to the optical Woods-Saxon potential. We observe unusual essential influence of the nuclear part of both potentials on the spectrum at high photon energies. This phenomenon opens a new experimental way to study and check non-Coulomb and nuclear interactions between pions and nuclei via measurements of the emitted photons. We provide predictions of the bremsstrahlung spectra for pion scattering off $^{44}{\rm Ca}$.

New quasibound states of the compound nucleus in $α$-particle capture by the nucleus

We generalize the theory of nuclear decay and capture of Gamow that is based on tunneling through the barrier and internal oscillations inside the nucleus. In our formalism an additional factor is obtained, which describes distribution of the wave function of the $α$ particle inside the nuclear region. We discover new most stable states (called quasibound states) of the compound nucleus (CN) formed during the capture of $α$ particle by the nucleus. With a simple example, we explain why these states cannot appear in traditional calculations of the $α$ capture cross sections based on monotonic penetrabilities of a barrier, but they appear in a complete description of the evolution of the CN. Our result is obtained by a complete description of the CN evolution, which has the advantages of (1) a clear picture of the formation of the CN and its disintegration, (2) a detailed quantum description of the CN, (3) tests of the calculated amplitudes based on quantum mechanics (not realized in other approaches), and (4) high accuracy of calculations (not achieved in other approaches). These peculiarities are shown with the capture reaction of $α+ ^{44}{\rm Ca}$. We predict quasibound energy levels and determine fusion probabilities for this reaction. The difference between our approach and theory of quasistationary states with complex energies applied for the $α$ capture is also discussed. We show (1) that theory does not provide calculations for the cross section of $α$ capture (according to modern models of the $α$ capture), in contrast with our formalism, and (2) these two approaches describe different states of the $α$ capture (for the same $α$-nucleus potential).

Quantum corrections to the Relativistic mean-field theory

In this paper, we compare the RMF theory and the model of deformed oscillator shells (DOS) in description of the quantum properties of the bound states of the spherically symmetric light nuclei. We obtain an explicit analytical relation between differential equations for the RMF theory and DOS model, which determine wave functions for nucleons. On such a basis we perform analysis of correspondence of quantum properties of nuclei. We find: (1) Potential $V_{RMF}$ of the RMF theory for nucleons has the wave functions $f$ and $g$ with joint part $h$ coincident exactly with the nucleon wave function of DOS model with potential $V_{\rm shell}$. But, a difference between $V_{RMF}$ and $V_{\rm shell}$ is essential for any nucleus. (2) The nucleon wave functions and densities obtained by the DOS and RMF theories are essentially different. The nucleon densities of the RMF theory contradict to knowledge about distribution of the proton and neutron densities inside the nuclei obtained from experimental data. This indicates that $g$ and $f$ have no sense of the wave functions of quantum physics. But, $h$ provides proper description of quantum properties of nucleons inside the nucleus. (3) We calculate meson function $w^{0}$ and potential $V_{w}$ in RMF theory based on the found nucleon density. (4) $f$ and $g$ are not solutions of Dirac equation with $V_{w}$. If the meson theory describes quantum properties of nucleus well, then a difference between $V_{w}$ and $V_{RMF}$ should be as small as possible. We introduce new quantum corrections characterizing difference between these potentials. We find that (a) The function $w^{0}$ should be reinforced strongly, (b) The corrections are necessary to describe the quantum properties of the nuclei.

Study of compound nucleus formation via bremsstrahlung emission in proton $α$-particle scattering

In this paper a role of many-nucleon dynamics in formation of the compound $^{5}{\rm Li}$ nucleus in the scattering of protons off $α$-particles at the proton incident energies up to 20 MeV is investigated. We propose a bremsstrahlung model allowing to extract information about probabilities of formation of such nucleus on the basis of analysis of experimental cross-sections of the bremsstrahlung photons. In order to realize this approach, the model includes elements of microscopic theory and also probabilities of formation of the short-lived compound nucleus. Results of calculations of the bremsstrahlung spectra are in good agreement with the experimental cross-sections.
