Simple biset functors and double Burnside rings

Let G be a finite group and let k be a field. Our purpose is to investigate the simple modules for the double Burnside ring kB(G,G). It turns out that they are evaluations at G of simple biset functors. For a fixed finite group H, we introduce a suitable bilinear form on kB(G,H) and we prove that the quotient of kB(-,H) by the radical of the bilinear form is a semi-simple functor. This allows for a description of the evaluation of simple functors, hence of simple modules for the double Burnside ring.

A conjecture on B-groups

In this note, I propose the following conjecture: a finite group G is nilpotent if and only if its largest quotient B-group β(G) is nilpotent. I give a proof of this conjecture under the additional assumption that G be solvable. I also show that this conjecture is equivalent to the following: the kernel of restrictions to nilpotent subgroups is a biset-subfunctor of the Burnside functor.

The Roquette category of finite p-groups

Let p be a prime number. This paper introduces the Roquette category R_p of finite p-groups, which is an additive tensor category containing all finite p-groups among its objects. In R_p, every finite p-group P admits a canonical direct summand, called the edge of P. Moreover P splits uniquely as a direct sum of edges of Roquette p-groups, and the tensor structure of R_p can be described in terms of such edges. The main motivation for considering this category is that the additive functors from R_p to abelian groups are exactly the rational p-biset functors. This yields in particular very efficient ways of computing such functors on arbitrary p-groups : this applies to the representation functors R_K, where K is any field of characteristic 0, but also to the functor of units of Burnside rings, or to the torsion part of the Dade group.

The slice Burnside ring and the section Burnside ring of a finite group

This paper introduces two new Burnside rings for a finite group $G$, called the slice Burnside ring and the section Burnside ring. They are built as Grothendieck rings of the category of morphisms of $G$-sets, and of Galois morphisms of $G$-sets, respectively. The well known results on the usual Burnside ring, concerning ghost maps, primitive idempotents, and description of the prime spectrum, are extended to these rings. It is also shown that these two rings have a natural structure of Green biset functor. The functorial structure of unit groups of these rings is also discussed.

The extension algebra of some cohomological Mackey functors

Let $k$ be a field of characteristic $p$. We construct a new inflation functor for cohomological Mackey functors for finite groups over $k$. Using this inflation functor, we give an explicit presentation of the graded algebra of self extensions of the simple functor $S_\un^G$, when $p$ is odd and $G$ is an elementary abelian $p$-group.

On the Cartan matrix of Mackey algebras

Let k be a field of characteristic p>0, and G be a finite group. The first result of this paper is an explicit formula for the determinant of the Cartan matrix of the Mackey algebra mu_k(G) of G over k. The second one is a formula for the rank of the Cartan matrix of the cohomological Mackey algebra comu_k(G) of G over k, and a characterization of the groups G for which this matrix is non singular. The third result is a generalization of this rank formula and characterization to blocks of comu_k(G) : in particular, if b is a block of kG, the Cartan matrix of the corresponding block comu_k(b) of comu_k(G) is non singular if and only if b is nilpotent with cyclic defect groups.

The primitive idempotents of the p-permutation ring

Let G be a finite group, let p be a prime number, and let K be a field of characteristic 0 and k be a field of characteristic p, both large enough. In this note we state explicit formulae for the primitive idempotents of K\otimes pp_k(G), where pp_k(G) is the ring of p-permutation kG-modules.

Complexity and cohomology of cohomological Mackey functors

Let $k$ be a field of characteristic $p>0$. Call a finite group $G$ a poco group over $k$ if any finitely generated cohomological Mackey functor for $G$ over $k$ has polynomial growth. The main result of this paper is that $G$ is a poco group over $k$ if and only if the Sylow $p$-subgroups of $G$ are cyclic, when $p>2$, or have sectional rank at most 2, when $p=2$. A major step in the proof is the case where $G$ is an elementary abelian $p$-group. In particular, when $p=2$, all the extension groups between simple functors can be determined completely, using a presentation of the graded algebra of self extensions of the simple functor $S_1^G$, by explicit generators and relations.

Gluing endo-permutation modules

In this paper, I show that if $p$ is an odd prime, and if $P$ is a finite $p$-group, then there exists an exact sequence of abelian groups $$0\to T(P)\to D(P)\to\lproj{P}\to H^1\big(\apdeux(P),\Z\big)^{(P)},$$ where $D(P)$ is the Dade group of $P$ and $T(P)$ is the subgroup of endo-trivial modules. Here $\lproj{P}$ is the group of sequences of compatible elements in the Dade groups $D\big(N_P(Q)/Q\big)$ for non trivial subgroups $Q$ of $P$. The poset $\apdeux(P)$ is the set of elementary abelian subgroups of rank at least 2 of $P$, ordered by inclusion. The group $H^1\big(\apdeux(P),\Z\big)^{(P)}$ is the subgroup of $H^1\big(\apdeux(P),\Z\big)$ consisting of classes of $P$-invariant 1-cocycles. A key result to prove that the above sequence is exact is a characterization of elements of $2D(P)$ by sequences of integers, indexed by sections $(T,S)$ of $P$ such that $T/S\cong (\Z/p\Z)^2$, fulfilling certain conditions associated to subquotients of $P$ which are either elementary abelian of rank~3, or extraspecial of order $p^3$ and exponent $p$.

A sectional characterization of the Dade group

Let $k$ be a field of characteristic $p$, let $P$ be a finite $p$- group, where $p$ is an odd prime, and let $D(P)$ be the Dade group of endo-permutation $kP$-modules. It is known that $D(P)$ is detected via deflation--restriction by the family of all sections of $P$ which are elementary abelian of rank $\leq2$. In this paper, we improve this result by characterizing $D(P)$ as the limit (with respect to deflation--restriction maps and conjugation maps) of all groups $D(T/S)$ where $T/S$ runs through all sections of $P$ which are either elementary abelian of rank $\leq3$ or extraspecial of order $p^3$ and exponent $p$.

Rational $p$-biset functors

In this paper, I give several characterizations of {\em rational biset functors over $p$-groups}, which are independent of the knowledge of genetic bases for $p$-groups. I also introduce a construction of new biset functors from known ones, which is similar to the Yoneda construction for representable functors, and to the Dress construction for Mackey functors, and I show that this construction preserves the class of rational $p$-biset functors.\par This leads to a characterization of rational $p$-biset functors as additive functors from a specific quotient category of the biset category to abelian groups. Finally, I give a description of the largest rational quotient of the Burnside $p$-biset functor : when $p$ is odd, this is simply the functor $R_\Q$ of rational representations, but when $p=2$, it is a non split extension of $R_\Q$ by a specific uniserial functor, which happens to be closely related to the functor of units of the Burnside ring.

The functor of units of Burnside rings for p-groups

In this note I describe the structure of the biset functor $B^\times$ sending a $p$-group $P$ to the group of units of its Burnside ring $B(P)$. In particular, I show that $B^\times$ is a rational biset functor. It follows that if $P$ is a $p$-group, the structure of $B^\times(P)$ can be read from a genetic basis of $P$: the group $B^\times(P)$ is an elementary abelian 2-group of rank equal to the number isomorphism classes of rational irreducible representations of $P$ whose type is trivial, cyclic of order 2, or dihedral.
