Statistical mechanical description of liquid systems in electric field

We formulate the statistical mechanical description of liquid systems for both polarizable and polar systems in an electric field in the $\mathbf{E}$-ensemble, which is the pendant to the thermodynamic description in terms of the free energy at constant potential. The contribution of the electric field to the configurational integral $\tilde{Q}_{N}(\mathbf{E})$ in the $\mathbf{E}$-ensemble is given in an exact form as a factor in the integrand of $\tilde{Q}_{N}(\mathbf{E})$. We calculate the contribution of the electric field to the Ornstein-Zernike formula for the scattering function in the $\mathbf{E}$-ensemble. As an application we determine the field induced shift of the critical temperature for polarizable and polar liquids, and show that the shift is upward for polarizable liquids and downward for polar liquids.

Polymer drift in a solvent by force acting on one polymer end

We investigate the effect of hydrodynamic interactions on the non-equilibrium drift dynamics of an ideal flexible polymer pulled by a constant force applied at one end of the polymer using the perturbation theory and the renormalization group method. For moderate force, if the polymer elongation is small, the hydrodynamic interactions are not screened and the velocity and the longitudinal elongation of the polymer are computed using the renormalization group method. Both the velocity and elongation are nonlinear functions of the driving force in this regime. For large elongation we found two regimes. For large force but finite chain length $L$ the hydrodynamic interactions are screened. For large chain lengths and a finite force the hydrodynamic interactions are only partially screened, which in three dimensions results in unusual logarithmic corrections to the velocity and the longitudinal elongation.

Skeleton expansions for directed polymers in disordered media

Partial summations of perturbation expansions of the directed polymer in disordered media (DPRM) enables one to represent the latter as skeleton expansions in powers of the effective coupling constant $Δ(t)$, which corresponds to the binding state between two replicas in the replica field theory of DPRM, and is equivalent to the binding state of a quantum particle in an external $δ$% -potential. The strong coupling phase is characterized by the exponential dependence of $Δ(t)$ on $t$, $Δ(t)\sim \exp (p_{c}t)$ with $% p_{c} $ being the binding energy of the particle. For dimensions $d>2$ the strong coupling phase exists for $Δ_{0}>Δ_{c}(d)$. We compute explicitly the mean-square displacement and the 2nd cumulant of the free energy to the lowest order in powers of effective coupling in $d=1$. We argue that the elimination of the terms $\exp (p_{c}t)$ in skeleton expansions demands an additional partial summation of skeleton series.

Surface segregation of conformationally asymmetric polymer blends

We have generalized the Edwards' method of collective description of dense polymer systems in terms of effective potentials to polymer blends in the presence of a surface. With this method we have studied conformationally asymmetric athermic polymer blends in the presence of a hard wall to the first order in effective potentials. For polymers with the same gyration radius $R_g$ but different statistical segment lengths $l_{A}$ and $l_{B}$ the excess concentration of stiffer polymers at the surface is derived as $% δρ_{A}(z=0)\sim (l_{B}^{-2}-l_{A}^{-2}){\ln (}R_{g}^{2}/l_{c}^{2}{)%}$, where $l_{c}$ is a local length below of which the incompressibility of the polymer blend is violated. For polymer blends differing only in degrees of polymerization the shorter polymer enriches the wall.

On the behaviour of short Kratky-Porod chain

Using the exact computation of a large number of moments of the distribution function of the end-to-end distance $G(r,N)$ of the worm-like chain, we have established the analytical form of the coefficients in Taylor expansions of the moments for short chain lengths $N$. The knowledge of these coefficients enabled us to resummate the moment expansion of $G(r,N)$ by taking into account consecutively the deviations of the moments from their stiff rod limit. Within this procedure we have derived the short chain expansion for $G(r,N)$, the scattering function, and the extension-force relation, which take into account the deviations of the moments from their stiff rod limit to the seventh order in $N$.

Dielectric response due to stochastic motion of pinned domain walls

We study the contribution of stochastic motion of a domain wall (DW) to the dielectric AC susceptibility for low frequencies. Using the concept of waiting time distributions, which is related to the energy landscape of the DW in a disordered medium, we derive the power-law behavior of the complex susceptibility observed recently in some ferroelectrics below Curie temperature.

Statistical mechanics of semiflexible polymers

We present the statistical-mechanical theory of semiflexible polymers based on the connection between the Kratky-Porod model and the quantum rigid rotator in an external homogeneous field, and treatment of the latter using the quantum mechanical propagator method. The expressions and relations existing for flexible polymers can be generalized to semiflexible ones, if one replaces the Fourier-Laplace transform of the end-to-end polymer distance, $1/(k^{2}/3+p)$, through the matrix $\tilde{P}(k,p)=(I+ikDM)^{-1}D$, where $D$ and $M$ are related to the spectrum of the quantum rigid rotator, and considers an appropriate matrix element of the expression under consideration. The present work provides also the framework to study polymers in external fields, and problems including the tangents of semiflexible polymers. We study the structure factor of the polymer, the transversal fluctuations of a free end of the polymer with fixed tangent of another end, and the localization of a semiflexible polymer onto an interface. We obtain the partition function of a semiflexible polymer in half space with Dirichlet boundary condition in terms of the end-to-end distribution function of the free semiflexible polymer, study the behaviour of a semiflexible polymer in the vicinity of a surface, and adsorption onto a surface.

Depinning transition at the upper critical dimension

We study the effect of quenched random field disorder on a driven elastic interface close to the depinning transition at the upper critical dimension d_{c}=4 using the functional renormalization group. We have found that the displacement correlation function behaves with distance x as ln(x)^{2/3} for large x. Slightly above the depinning transition the force-velocity characteristics is described by the equation v ~ f |ln(f)|^{2/9}, while the correlation length behaves as L_{v} ~ f^{-1/2}|ln(f)|^{1/6}, where f=F/F_{c}-1 is the reduced driving force.

Universal energy distribution for interfaces in a random field environment

We study the energy distribution function $ρ(E)$ for interfaces in a random field environment at zero temperature by summing the leading terms in the perturbation expansion of $ρ(E)$ in powers of the disorder strength, and by taking into account the non perturbational effects of the disorder using the functional renormalization group. We have found that the average and the variance of the energy for one-dimensional interface of length $L$ behave as, $ _{R}\propto L\ln L$, $ΔE_{R}\propto L$, while the distribution function of the energy tends for large $L$ to the Gumbel distribution of the extreme value statistics.

Localization of a Gaussian polymer in a weak periodic surface potential disturbed by a single defect

Using the results of the recently studied problem of adsorption of a Gaussian polymer in a weak periodic surface potential we study the influence of a single rod like defect on the polymer being localized in the periodic surface potential. We have found that the polymer will be localized at the defect under condition u>u_c, where u_c is the localization threshold in the periodic potential, for any infinitesimal strength of the interaction with defect. We predict that the concentration of monomers of the localized polymer decays exponentially as a function of the distance to the defect and is modulated with the period of the surface potential.

The distribution function of a semiflexible polymer and random walks with constraints

In studying the end-to-end distribution function $G(r,N)$ of a worm like chain by using the propagator method we have established that the combinatorial problem of counting the paths contributing to $G(r,N)$ can be mapped onto the problem of random walks with constraints, which is closely related to the representation theory of the Temperley-Lieb algebra. By using this mapping we derive an exact expression of the Fourier-Laplace transform of the distribution function, $G(k,p)$, as a matrix element of an inverse of an infinite rank matrix. Using this result we also derived a recursion relation permitting to compute $G(k,p)$ directly. We present the results of the computation of $G(k,N)$ and its moments. The moments $ $ of $% G(r,N)$ can be calculated \emph{exactly} by calculating the (1,1) matrix element of $2n$-th power of a truncated matrix of rank $n+1$.

Localization of a random heteropolymer onto a surface

We study the localization of a random heteropolymer onto an homogeneous surface, the problem which is equivalent to the wetting of an interface at disordered substrate in two dimensions, via replica trick by using the Green's function technique. The exact treatment of one- and two-replica binding states is used to compute the free energy of the random heteropolymer. We present analytical results for two particular cases: {\it (i)} nearly statistically symmetric copolymer in the vicinity of the threshold of the annealed problem, and {\it (ii)} the asymmetric polymer with the interaction part of the annealed Hamiltonian being nearly zero. In both cases the localization is due to two-replica binding states. In the case {\it (i)} the two-replica binding state exists both above and below of the one-replica binding state. In the case {\it (ii)} the energy of the two-replica binding state at the transition is finite. A schematic phase diagram of the localization-delocalization transition of the random heteropolymer is suggested.

Adsorption of a random heteropolymer with self-interactions onto an interface

We consider the adsorption of a random heteropolymer onto an interface within the model by Garel et al. [1] by taking into account self-interactions between the monomers. Within the replica trick and by using a self-consistent preaveraging procedure we map the adsorption problem onto the problem of binding state of a quantum mechanical Hamiltonian. The analysis of the latter is treated within the variational method based on the 2-nd Legendre transform. We have found that self-interactions favor the localization. The effect is intensified with decrease of the temperature. Within a model without taking into account the repulsive ternary monomer-monomer interactions we predict a reentrant localization transition for large values of the asymmetry of the heteropolymer and at low enough temperatures.

Adsorption of a semiflexible polymer onto interfaces and surfaces

We consider the adsorption of a semiflexible polymer chain onto interfaces and surfaces by using the differential equation of the distribution function $G(R,L)$ of the end-to-end distance $R$, which is associated with the moment expansion of the latter. We present the results of the approximative treatment consisting of taking into account the 2nd and 4th moments in the differential equation for $G(R,L)$. The essential features of adsorption of the semiflexible polymer are: {\it i}) the existence of a new local length scale, which results in two-exponential decay of the monomer density of adsorbed polymer; {\it ii}) the binding of the semiflexible polymer is weaker than that for flexible one for both interface and wall. The approximative theory presented is restricted to the regime of weak adsorption, where the effect of the rodlike behavior of the polymer on small scales is weak.

On the Behavior of the Lifshitz Line in Ternary Homopolymer/Diblock-Copolymer Blends

We present results of the study of the non-monotonous behavior of the Lifshitz line as a function of temperature in ternary homopolymer/diblock-copolymer mixtures. The non-monotonous behavior of the Lifshitz line is due to the wave vector dependence of fluctuational corrections, which we treat in the framework of the renormalization group method. Our results are in agreement with the experimental findings of Schwahn et al.[1,2]

Drift of a polymer chain in disordered media

We consider the drift of a polymer chain in a disordered medium, which is caused by a constant force applied to the one end of the polymer, under neglecting the thermal fluctuations. In the lowest order of the perturbation theory we have computed the transversal fluctuations of the centre of mass of the polymer, the transversal and the longitudinal size of the polymer, and the average velocity of the polymer. The corrections to the quantities under consideration, which are due to the interplay between the motion and the quenched forces, are controlled by the driving force and the degree of polymerization. The transversal fluctuations of the Brownian particle and of the centre of mass of the polymer are obtained to be diffusive. The transversal fluctuations studied in the present Letter may also be of relevance for the related problem of the drift of a directed polymer in disordered media and its applications.

Localization transition of random copolymers at interfaces

We consider adsorption of random copolymer chains onto an interface within the model of Garel et al. Europhysics Letters 8, 9 (1989). By using the replica method the adsorption of the copolymer at the interface is mapped onto the problem of finding the ground state of a quantum mechanical Hamiltonian. To study this ground state we introduce a novel variational principle for the Green's function, which generalizes the well-known Rayleigh-Ritz method of Quantum Mechanics to nonstationary states. Minimization with an appropriate trial Green's function enables us to find the phase diagram for the localization-delocalization transition for an ideal random copolymer at the interface.

Driven Interface Depinning in a Disordered Medium

The dynamics of a driven interface in a medium with random pinning forces is analyzed. The interface undergoes a depinning transition where the order parameter is the interface velocity $v$, which increases as $v \sim (F-F_c)^θ$ for driving forces $F$ close to its threshold value $F_c$. We consider a Langevin-type equation which is expected to be valid close to the depinning transition of an interface in a statistically isotropic medium. By a functional renormalization group scheme the critical exponents characterizing the depinning transition are obtained to the first order in $ε=4-D>0$, where $D$ is the interface dimension. The main results were published earlier [T. Nattermann et al., J. Phys. II France {\bf 2} (1992) 1483]. Here, we present details of the perturbative calculation and of the derivation of the functional flow equation for the random-force correlator. The fixed point function of the correlator has a cusp singularity which is related to a finite value of the threshold $F_c$, similar to the mean field theory. We also present extensive numerical simulations and compare them with our analytical results for the critical exponents. For $ε=1$ the numerical and analytical results deviate from each other by only a few percent. The deviations in lower dimensions $ε= 2,3$ are larger and suggest that the roughness exponent is somewhat larger than the value $ζ= ε/ 3$ of an interface in thermal equilibrium.
