The Nu Class of Low-Degree-Truncated, Rational, Generalized Functions. Ic. IMSPE-optimal designs with circular-disk prediction domains

This paper is an extension of Part I of a series about Nu-class multifunctions. A method is presented for computing the integrated mean-squared prediction error (IMSPE) in the design of computer experiments, when the prediction domain is a circular disk. The method is extensible to more than two factors, to prediction domains other than squares or disks, and to a variety of assumed covariance functions. Three example optimal designs, under Gaussian covariance with known hyperparameters, are found using the method: an n=1 design centered on the disk; an n=2 continuously rotatable design with assumed inversion symmetry about the center of the disk; and an n=4 twin-point design similar to the n=4 twin-point design observed previously for a square prediction domain [1]. The four-point design on the disk demonstrates that non-round boundaries are not a prerequisite for the occurrence of twin-point optimal designs.

The Nu Class of Low-Degree-Truncated, Rational, Generalized Functions. Ib. Integrals of Matern-correlation functions for all odd-half-integer class parameters

This paper is an extension of Parts I and Ia of a series about Nu-class generalized functions. We provide hand-generated algebraic expressions for integrals of single Matern-covariance functions, as well as for products of two Matern-covariance functions, for all odd-half-integer class parameters. These are useful both for IMSPE-optimal design software and for testing universality of Nu-class generalized-function properties, across covariance classes.

The Nu Class of Low-Degree-Truncated, Rational, Generalized Functions. Ia. MINOS for IMSPE Evaluation and Optimal-IMSPE-Design Search

We provide compact algebraic expressions that replace the lengthy symbolic-algebra-generated integrals I6 and I8 in Part I of this series of papers [1]. The MRSE entries of Part I, Table 4.3 are thus updated to simpler algebraic expressions. We use MINOS [2-4] to tabulate several IMSPE-optimal designs with one factor and one or two design points, for the exponential-, two of the Mat\'ern-, and the Gaussian-correlation functions, i.e. for the class of problems considered in Part I. The tabulated results can be used as standards for optimal-design-software developers and users.

The Nu Class of Low-Degree-Truncated, Rational, Generalized Functions. I. IMSPE in Design of Computer Experiments: Integrals and Very-Low-N, Single-Factor, Free-Ranging Designs

We provide detailed algebra for determining the integrated mean-squared prediction error (IMSPE) of designs of computer experiments, with one factor and one or two points, under the exponential, Gaussian, or either of two Matern correlation functions. This algebra shall provide the basis for the identification of the IMSPE as a member of a special class of low-degree-truncated rational functions, which we name, here, the Nu class. We shall detail this function class in a series of papers, of which this is the first.

Four-Point, 2D, Free-Ranging, IMSPE-Optimal, Twin-Point Designs

We report the discovery of a set of four-point, two-factor, free-ranging, putatively IMSPE-optimal designs with a pair of twin points, in the statistical design of computer experiments, under Gaussian-process, fixed-Gaussian-covariance parameter, and zero-nugget assumptions. We conjecture this is the set of free-ranging, twin-point designs with the smallest number of degrees of freedom.

Factorization of the Determinant of the Gaussian-Correlation Matrix of Evenly Spaced Points Using an Inter-dimensional Multiset Duality

We prove that the determinant of a Gaussian-correlation matrix V of n evenly spaced points has leading power n(n-1) in the nearest-neighbor distance between points. The proof uses Neville elimination to determine all elements of the upper triangular matrix U of V and provides a factorization of det(V). The proof makes use of an inter-dimensional multiset duality involving simplices that emerge during the factorization. We conjecture that V for evenly spaced points is strictly totally positive.
