Magnetophonons & type-B Goldstones from Hydrodynamics to Holography

We perform a detailed analysis of a large class of effective holographic models with broken translations at finite charge density and magnetic field. We exhaustively discuss the dispersion relations of the hydrodynamic modes at zero magnetic field and successfully match them to the predictions from charged hydrodynamics. At finite magnetic field, we identify the presence of an expected type-B Goldstone boson $\mathrm{Re}[ω]\sim k^2$, known as magnetophonon and its gapped partner -- the magnetoplasmon. We discuss their properties in relation to the effective field theory and hydrodynamics expectations. Finally, we compute the optical conductivities and the quasinormal modes at finite magnetic field. We observe that the pinning frequency of the magneto-resonance peak increases with the magnetic field, in agreement with experimental data on certain 2D materials, revealing the quantum nature of the holographic pinning mechanism.

Nonlinear Oscillatory Shear Tests in Viscoelastic Holography

We provide the first characterization of the nonlinear and time dependent rheologic response of viscoelastic bottom-up holographic models. More precisely, we perform oscillatory shear tests in holographic massive gravity theories with finite elastic response, focusing on the large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) regime. The characterization of these systems is done using several techniques: (I) the Lissajous figures, (II) the Fourier analysis of the stress signal, (III) the Pipkin diagram and (IV) the dependence of the storage and loss moduli on the amplitude of the applied strain. We find substantial evidence for a strong strain stiffening mechanism, typical of hyper-elastic materials such as rubbers and complex polymers. This indicates that the holographic models considered are not a good description for rigid metals, where strain stiffening is not commonly observed. Additionally, a crossover between a viscoelastic liquid regime at small graviton mass (compared to the temperature scale), and a viscoelastic solid regime at large values is observed. Finally, we discuss the relevance of our results for soft matter and for the understanding of the widely used homogeneous holographic models with broken translations.

Entanglement entropy and $T\bar T$ deformations beyond antipodal points from holography

We consider the entanglement entropies in dS$_d$ sliced (A)dS$_{d+1}$ in the presence of a hard radial cutoff for $2\le d\le 6$. By considering a one parameter family of analytical solutions, parametrized by their turning point in the bulk $r^\star$, we are able to compute the entanglement entropy for generic intervals on the cutoff slice. It has been proposed that the field theory dual of this scenario is a strongly coupled CFT, deformed by a certain irrelevant deformation -- the so-called $T\bar T$ deformation. Surprisingly, we find that we may write the entanglement entropies formally in the same way as the entanglement entropy for antipodal points on the sphere by introducing an effective radius $R_\text{eff}=R\,\cos(β_ε)$, where $R$ is the radius of the sphere and $β_ε$ related to the length of the interval. Geometrically, this is equivalent to following the $T\bar T$ trajectory until the generic interval corresponds to antipodal points on the sphere. Finally, we check our results by comparing the asymptotic behavior (no Dirichlet wall present) with the results of Casini, Huerta and Myers. We then switch on counterterms on the cutoff slice which are important with regards to the field theory calculation. We explicitly compute the contributions of the counterterms to the entanglement entropy by considering the Wald entropy. In the second part of this work, we extend the field theory calculation of the entanglement entropy for antipodal points for a $d$-dimensional field theory in context of DS/dS holography. We find excellent agreement with the results from holography and show, in particular, that the effects of the counterterms in the field theory calculation match the Wald entropy associated with the counterterms on the gravity side.

Zoology of Solid & Fluid Holography : Goldstone Modes and Phase Relaxation

We provide a comprehensive classification of isotropic solid and fluid holographic models with broken translational invariance. We describe in detail the collective modes in both the transverse and longitudinal sectors. First, we discuss holographic fluid models, i.e. systems invariant under internal volume preserving diffeomorphisms. We consider the explicit (EXB) and the spontaneous (SSB) breaking of translations and we emphasize the differences with respect to their solid counterpart. Then, we present a study of the longitudinal collective modes in simple holographic solid and fluid models exhibiting the interplay between SSB and EXB. We confirm the presence of light pseudo-phonons obeying the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation and the validity of the relation proposed in the literature between the novel phase relaxation scale, the mass of the pseudo-Golstone modes and the Goldstone diffusion. Moreover, we find very good agreement between the dispersion relation of our longitudinal sound mode and the formulae derived from the Hydro$+$ framework. Finally, our results suggest that the crystal diffusion mode does not acquire a simple damping term because of the novel relaxation scale proportional to the EXB. The dynamics is more complex and it involves the interplay of three modes: the crystal diffusion and two more arising from the splitting of the original sound mode. In this sense, the novel relaxation scale, which comes from the explicit breaking of the global internal shift symmetry of the Stückelberg fields, is different from the one induced by elastic defects, and depending solely on the SSB scale.

Longitudinal Sound and Diffusion in Holographic Massive Gravity

We consider a simple class of holographic massive gravity models for which the dual field theories break translational invariance spontaneously. We study, in detail, the longitudinal sector of the quasi-normal modes at zero charge density. We identify three hydrodynamic modes in this sector: a pair of sound modes and one diffusion mode. We numerically compute the dispersion relations of the hydrodynamic modes. The obtained speed and the attenuation of the sound modes are in agreement with the hydrodynamic predictions. On the contrary, we surprisingly find disagreement in the case of the diffusive mode; its diffusion constant extracted from the quasi-normal mode data does not agree with the expectations from hydrodynamics. We confirm our numerical results using analytic tools in the decoupling limit and we comment on some possible reasons behind the disagreement. Finally, we extend the analysis of the collective longitudinal modes beyond the hydrodynamic limit by displaying the dynamics of the higher quasi-normal modes at large frequencies and momenta.

Entropy, Entanglement and Swampland Bounds in DS/dS

We calculate the entanglement entropy of the de-Sitter (dS) static patch in the context of the DS/dS correspondence. Interestingly, we find that there exists a one parameter family of bulk minimal surfaces that all have the same area. Two of them have appeared earlier in the literature. All of them correctly calculate the dS entropy. One surface yields the entanglement between the two different CFTs that provide the holographic dual of the bulk DS geometry. The second surface describes the entanglement across the horizon in the boundary static patch. The other surfaces describe a mixture of these two concepts. We also show that in the presence of extra matter fields the former entanglement entropy always exceeds the dS entropy. We interpret this result in the context of entropy bounds in de Sitter space and the swampland program.

Holographic quenches and anomalous transport

In my master thesis, I investigated the chiral-magnetic effect in the context of holography; I focused in especially on the impact of the chiral anomaly at transport properties and non-equilbrium behaviour in response to an holographic quench. Concretely, I considered an $U(1)_\text{A}\times U(1)_\text{V}$-Einstein-Maxwell bottom-up model consisting of two massless gauge fields, coupled by a Chern-Simons term in the fivedimensional AdS spacetime. The two gauge fields provide a time dependent electric field and a static magnetic field, parallel to it. As response of the system to quench, I investigated the electromagnetic current in direction of the magnetic field which is generated due to the CME. In the first part of the thesis, I characterised the initial response of the system, in a fixed Schwarzschild AdS background, subjected to a 'fast' quench. The corresponding hyperbolic PDE is solved by means of a fully spectral code in spaces as well as in time direction. Note that this was the first application of a fully spectral code within holography. In the case of 'fast' quenches, the system exhibits an universal scaling behaviour, independent of the external parameters as the strength of the anomaly and the magnetic field, respectively. The late time behaviour of the system shows, depending on the quench and external parameters, in some cases long lived oscillations in the current. Furthermore, I computed the quasi-normal modes of the systems, including the backreaction of the matter fields on the background metric. It turns out that the long lived oscillations appear only in presence of the anomaly and can be traced back to the presence of Landau levels in the system. The results of my master thesis were partly published in arXiv:1607.06817; however, the thesis contains a lot of interesting, and so far unpublished, results and can be viewed as extended version of the paper.

Holographic quenches and anomalous transport

We study the response of the chiral magnetic effect due to continuous quenches induced by time dependent electric fields within holography. Concretely, we consider a holographic model with dual chiral anomaly and compute the electric current parallel to a constant, homogeneous magnetic field and a time dependent electric field in the probe approximation. We explicitly solve the PDEs by means of pseudospectral methods in spatial and time directions and study the transition to an universal "fast" quench response. Moreover, we compute the amplitudes, i.e.,~residues of the quasi normal modes, by solving the (ODE) Laplace transformed equations. We investigate the possibility of considering the asymptotic growth rate of the amplitudes as a well defined notion of initial time scale for linearized systems. Finally, we highlight the existence of Landau level resonances in the electrical conductivity parallel to a magnetic field at finite frequency and show explicitly that these only appear in presence of the anomaly. We show that the existence of these resonances induces, among others, a long-lived AC electric current once the electric field is switched off.
