On Neumann $p$-Laplacian Lane-Emden equations and their asymptotic relationship with relative isoperimetric problems

We consider a family of pure Neumann $p$-Laplacian problems, including eigenvalue problems, Lane-Emden type equations, and extremal cases such as sign nonlinearities and the $1$-Laplacian. Using variational methods, we develop a unified framework that establishes existence of solutions and characterizes their asymptotic behavior as the parameters vary. This approach reveals a natural asymptotic connection between pure Neumann $p$-Laplacian equations and a relative isoperimetric problem known as the Neumann-Cheeger problem. We describe the shape of minimizers in domains with different geometries and obtain results on regularity, uniqueness, multiplicity, symmetry, and symmetry breaking phenomena.

Quantitative Estimates on the Topology and Singular Set of Prescribed Mean Curvature Hypersurfaces

We establish quantitative topological and singularity properties for (certain) prescribed mean curvature (PMC) hypersurfaces $V^n$ in Riemannian manifolds $(N^{n+1},h)$. Indeed, if $V$ has area at most $A>0$ with PMC given by a $C^{1,\alpha}$ function $g:N\to \mathbb{R}$ with the bound $|g|_{C^{1,\alpha}}\leq \Gamma$, we show that there exists a constant $C$ depending only on $n,h,A,\Gamma$ and geometric quantities such that: \[\sum^n_{i=0}b^i(V) \leq C(1+\text{index}(V)) \quad \text{if }3\leq n+1\leq 7;\] \[M^{*n-7}(\text{sing}(V)) \leq C(1+\text{index}(V)) \quad \text{if }n+1\geq 8.\] Here, $b^i$ denote the Betti numbers over any field, $M^{*n-7}$ denotes the upper $(n-7)$-dimensional Minkowski content, and $\text{sing}(V)$ is the singular set of $V$. The first inequality extends the work of Song from the minimal hypersurface setting to the PMC hypersurface setting, whilst the second extends work of the authors. Our results apply to the PMC hypersurfaces constructed recently through min-max techniques by Bellettini--Wickramasekera.

Chatting Up Attachment: Using LLMs to Predict Adult Bonds

Obtaining data in the medical field is challenging, making the adoption of AI technology within the space slow and high-risk. We evaluate whether we can overcome this obstacle with synthetic data generated by large language models (LLMs). In particular, we use GPT-4 and Claude 3 Opus to create agents that simulate adults with varying profiles, childhood memories, and attachment styles. These agents participate in simulated Adult Attachment Interviews (AAI), and we use their responses to train models for predicting their underlying attachment styles. We evaluate our models using a transcript dataset from 9 humans who underwent the same interview protocol, analyzed and labeled by mental health professionals. Our findings indicate that training the models using only synthetic data achieves performance comparable to training the models on human data. Additionally, while the raw embeddings from synthetic answers occupy a distinct space compared to those from real human responses, the introduction of unlabeled human data and a simple standardization allows for a closer alignment of these representations. This adjustment is supported by qualitative analyses and is reflected in the enhanced predictive accuracy of the standardized embeddings.

Critical Allard regularity: pointwise tilt-excess estimates

The main results of this paper provide VMO-type estimates for the quadratic tilt-excess on varifolds with critical generalized mean curvature. These estimates apply to varifolds with "almost-integral" density which are close to a multiplicity one $m$-disc in a ball in the usual senses. The class of almost-integral varifolds allows for varifolds with non-perpendicular mean curvature. Moreover, the estimates hold \emph{uniformly for every point} in a relatively open set in $\text{spt}||V||$ and naturally imply a Reifenberg-type parametrization. The proof relies upon generalizing the $Q$-valued Lipschitz approximation and Sobolev-Poincar\'e estimates of arXiv:0808.3660 to almost-integral rectifiable varifolds.

Structure of measures for which Ehrhard symmetrization is perimeter non-increasing

In this paper, we prove that isotropic Gaussian functions are \textit{characterized} by a rearrangement inequality for weighted perimeter in dimensions $n \geq 2$ within the class of non-negative weights in $L^1(\mathbb{R}^n) \cap W^{1,1}_{loc}(\mathbb{R}^n)$. More specifically, we prove that within this class, generalized Ehrhard symmetrization is perimeter non-increasing for all measurable sets in all directions if and only if the distribution function is an isotropic Gaussian. The class of non-negative $L^1(\mathbb{R}^n) \cap W^{1,1}_{loc}(\mathbb{R}^n)$-weights is the broadest class in which this problem can be posed for distributional perimeter. One of the main challenges in this paper is handling these weights without imposing any additional structure. Principally, we establish that generalized Ehrhard symmetrization preserves $\mu$-measurability through a novel approximation argument. Additionally, our proof that a rearrangement inequality for weighted perimeter implies that half-spaces are isoperimetric sets is new in the context of generalized Ehrhard symmetrization. Moreover, our version of a variational argument, which had previously appeared in [Rosales, 2014] and [Brock-Chiacchio-Mercaldo, 2008], is carried out under minimal regularity. Finally, we establish some basic but useful results for weighted BV functions with non-negative $L^1(\mathbb{R}^n) \cap W^{1,1}_{loc}(\mathbb{R}^n)$-weights which may be of independent interest.

Quantitative Estimates on the Singular Set of Minimal Hypersurfaces with Bounded Index

We prove local measure bounds on the tubular neighbourhood of the singular set of codimension one stationary integral $n$-varifolds $V$ in Riemannian manifolds which have both: (i) finite index on their smoothly embedded part; and (ii) $\mathcal{H}^{n-1}$-null singular set. A direct consequence of such a bound is a bound on the upper Minkowski content of the singular set of such a varifold in terms of its total mass and its index. Such a result improves on known bounds, namely the corresponding bound on the $\mathcal{H}^{n-7}$-measure of the singular set established by A. Song ([10]), as well as the same bounds established by A. Naber and D. Valtorta ([6]) for codimension one area minimising currents. Our results also provide more structural information on the singular set for codimension one integral varifolds with finite index (on the regular part) and no classical singularities established by N. Wickramasekera ([11]).

Subsets of rectifiable curves in Banach spaces II: universal estimates for almost flat arcs

We prove that in any Banach space the set of windows in which a rectifiable curve resembles two or more straight line segments is quantitatively small with constants that are independent of the curve, the dimension of the space, and the choice of norm. Together with Part I, this completes the proof of the necessary half of the Analyst's Traveling Salesman theorem with sharp exponent in uniformly convex spaces.

Non-existence of cusps for a Free-boundary Problem for Water Waves

In arXiv:0908.1031, Varvaruca and Weiss eliminate the existence of cusps for a free-boundary problem for two-dimensional water waves under assumptions that hold for solutions such that $\{u>0\}$ is a "strip-like" domain in the sense of arXiv:0708.4371. In this paper it is proven that cusps do not exists in the natural setting for these free-boundary problems. In particular, non strip-like domains are also allowed. This builds upon recent work on non-existence of cusps in arXiv:2202.00616.

Non-existence of cusps for degenerate Alt-Caffarelli functionals

We eliminate the existence of cusps in a class of \textit{degenerate} free-boundary problems for the Alt-Caffarelli functional $J_{Q}(v, \Omega):= \int_{\Omega}|\nabla v|^2 + Q^2(x)\chi_{\{v>0\}}dx,$ so-called because $Q(x) = \text{dist}(x, \Gamma)^{\gamma}$ for $\Gamma$ an affine $k$-plane and $0< \gamma$. This problem is inspired by a generalization of the variational formulation of the Stokes Wave by Arama and Leoni. The elimination of cusps implies that the results of [Mccurdy20] in fact describe the entire free-boundary as it intersects $\Gamma$.

Conditions for Eliminating Cusps in One-Phase Free Boundary Problems with Degeneracy

In this paper, we continue the study local minimizers of a degenerate version of the Alt-Caffarelli functional. Specifically, we consider local minimizers of the functional $J_{Q}(u, \Omega):= \int_{\Omega} |\nabla u|^2 + Q(x)^2\chi_{\{u>0\}}dx$ where $Q(x) = dist(x, \Gamma)^{\gamma}$ for $\gamma>0$ and $\Gamma$ a submanifold of dimension $0 \le k \le n-1$. Previously, it was shown that on $\Gamma$, the free boundary $\partial \{u>0\}$ may be decomposed into a rectifiable set $\mathcal{S}$, which satisfies effective estimates, and a cusp set $\Sigma$. In this note, we prove that under mild assumptions, in the case $n = 2$ and $\Gamma$ a line, the cusp set $\Sigma$ does not exist. Building upon the work of Arama and Leoni \cite{AramaLeoni12}, our results apply to the physical case of a variational formulation of the Stokes' wave and provide a complete characterization of the singular portion of the free boundary in complete generality in this context.

One-phase free-boundary problems with degeneracy

In this paper, we study local minimizers of a degenerate version of the Alt-Caffarelli functional. Specifically, we consider local minimizers of the functional $J_{Q}(u, \Omega):= \int_{\Omega} |\nabla u|^2 + Q(x)^2\chi_{\{u>0\}}dx$ where $Q(x) = \text{dist}(x, \Gamma)^{\gamma}$ for $\gamma>0$ and $\Gamma$ a $C^{1, \alpha}$ submanifold of dimension $0 \le k \le n-1$. We show that the free boundary may be decomposed into a rectifiable set, on which we prove upper Minkowski content estimates, and a degenerate cusp set about which little can be said in general with the current techniques. Work in the theory of water waves and the Stokes wave serves as our inspiration, however the main thrust of this paper is to study the geometry of the free boundary for degenerate one-phase Bernoulli free-boundary problems in the context of local minimizers.

Subsets of rectifiable curves in Banach spaces I: sharp exponents in traveling salesman theorems

The Analyst's Traveling Salesman Problem is to find a characterization of subsets of rectifiable curves in a metric space. This problem was introduced and solved in the plane by Jones in 1990 and subsequently solved in higher-dimensional Euclidean spaces by Okikiolu in 1992 and in the infinite-dimensional Hilbert space $\ell_2$ by Schul in 2007. In this paper, we establish sharp extensions of Schul's necessary and sufficient conditions for a bounded set $E\subset\ell_p$ to be contained in a rectifiable curve from $p=2$ to $1<p<\infty$. While the necessary and sufficient conditions coincide when $p=2$, we demonstrate that there is a strict gap between the necessary condition and sufficient condition when $p\neq 2$. We also identify and correct technical errors in the proof by Schul. This investigation is partly motivated by recent work of Edelen, Naber, and Valtorta on Reifenberg-type theorems in Banach spaces and complements work of Hahlomaa and recent work of David and Schul on the Analyst's TSP in general metric spaces.

Unique Continuation on Convex Domains

In this paper, we obtain estimates on the quantitative strata of the critical set of non-trivial harmonic functions $u$ which vanish continuously on $V \subset \partial \Omega$, a relatively open subset of the boundary of a convex domain $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^n$. In particular, these estimates improve dimensional estimates on $\{|\nabla u| =0\}$ both in $V \subset \partial \Omega$ and as it \textit{approaches} $V \cap \overline{\Omega}.$ These estimates are not obtainable by naively combining interior and boundary estimates and represent a significant improvement upon existing results for boundary analytic continuation in the convex case.

Wild examples of rectifiable sets

We study the geometry of sets based on the behavior of the Jones function, $J_{E}(x) = \int_{0}^{1} \beta_{E;2}^{1}(x,r)^{2} \frac{dr}{r}$. We construct two examples of countably $1$-rectifiable sets in $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ with positive and finite $\mathcal{H}^1$-measure for which the Jones function is nowhere locally integrable. These examples satisfy different regularity properties: one is connected and one is Ahlfors regular. Both examples can be generalized to higher-dimension and co-dimension.

The Singular Strata of a Free-Boundary problem for harmonic measure

In this paper, we obtain \textit{quantitative} estimates on the fine structure of the singular set of the mutual boundary $\partial \Omega^{\pm}$ for pairs of complementary domains, $\Omega^+, \Omega^- \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ which arise in a class of two-sided free boundary problems for harmonic measure. These estimates give new insight into the structure of the mutual boundary, $\partial \Omega^{\pm}.$
