A tale of two volumes of moduli spaces: Weil-Petersson and Masur-Veech

Weil-Petersson and Masur-Veech volumes measure the sizes of moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces equipped with hyperbolic and flat metrics, respectively. Over the past several decades, the computation of these volumes has inspired remarkable developments in combinatorial enumeration, intersection theory, and recursion relations. In this survey, we review key results, methods, open problems, as well as interesting parallels that emerge in the approaches to computing both types of volumes.

Isoresidual fibrations and the birational geometry of moduli of pointed stable curves

We show that the pseudo-effective cone of divisors of $\overline{M}_{0,n}$ is not polyhedral for $n\geq 8$ by constructing an extremal non-polyhedral ray of the dual cone of moving curves via maps on meromorphic strata of differentials returning the residues at the poles of the parameterised differentials. An immediate corollary is that these spaces are not Mori Dream Spaces.

Weil-Petersson volumes, stability conditions and wall-crossing

In this paper we study Weil-Petersson volumes of the moduli spaces of conical hyperbolic surfaces. The moduli spaces are parametrised by their cone angles which naturally live inside Hassett's space of stability conditions on nodal curves. Such stability conditions produce weighted pointed stable curves which define compactifications of the moduli space of curves generalising the Deligne-Mumford compactification. The space of stability conditions decompose into chambers separated by walls. We assign to each chamber a polynomial corresponding to the Weil-Petersson volume of a moduli space of conical hyperbolic surfaces. The chambers are naturally partially ordered and the maximal chamber is assigned Mirzakhani's polynomial. We calculate wall-crossing polynomials, which relates the polynomial on any chamber to Mirzakhani's polynomial via wall-crossings, and we show how to apply this in particular cases. Since the polynomials are volumes, they have nice properties such as positivity, continuity across walls, and vanishing in certain limits.

Teichm\"uller curves in hyperelliptic components of meromorphic strata

We provide a complete classification of Teichm\"uller curves occurring in hyperelliptic components of the meromorphic strata of differentials. Using a non-existence criterion based on how Teichm\"uller curves intersect the boundary of the moduli space we derive a contradiction to the algebraicity of any candidate outside of Hurwitz covers of strata with projective dimension one and Hurwitz covers of zero residue loci in strata with projective dimension two.

Definable structures on flat bundles

A flat vector bundle on an algebraic variety supports two natural definable structures given by the flat and algebraic coordinates. In this note we show these two structures coincide, subject to a condition on the local monodromy at infinity which is satisfied for all flat bundles underlying variations of Hodge structures.

The Kodaira classification of the moduli of hyperelliptic curves

We study the birational geometry of the moduli spaces of hyperelliptic curves with marked points. We show that these moduli spaces have non $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial singularities. We complete the Kodaira classification by proving that these spaces have Kodaira dimension $4g+3$ when the number of markings is $4g+6$ and are of general type when the number of markings is $n\geq4g+7$. Similarly, we consider the natural finite cover given by ordering the Weierstrass points. In this case, we provide a full Kodaira classification showing that the Kodaira dimension is negative when $n\leq3$, one when $n=4$, and of general type when $n\geq 5$. For this, we carry out a singularity analysis of ordered and unordered pointed Hurwitz spaces. We show that the ordered space has canonical singularities and the unordered space has non-canonical singularities. We describe all non-canonical points and show that pluricanonical forms defined on the full regular locus extend to any resolution. Further, we provide a full classification of the structure of the pseudo-effective cone of Cartier divisors for the moduli space of hyperelliptic curves with marked points. We show the cone is non-polyhedral when the number of markings is at least two and polyhedral in the remaining cases.

On the Kodaira dimension of Hurwitz spaces

We show that the canonical bundle of the Hurwitz stack classifying covers of genus g>1 and degree k>2 of the projective line is big. We show that all coarse moduli spaces of trigonal curves of genus g>1 are of general type.

Non-polyhedral effective cones from the moduli space of curves

We show that the pseudoeffective cone of divisors $\overline{\text{Eff}}^1(\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n})$ for $g\geq 2$ and $n\geq 2$ is not polyhedral by showing that the class of the fibre of the morphism forgetting one point forms an extremal ray of the dual nef cone of curves $\overline{\text{Nef}}_1(\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n})$ and the cone at this ray is not polyhedral.

Strata of differentials of the second kind, positivity and irreducibility of certain Hurwitz spaces

We consider two applications of the strata of differentials of the second kind (all residues equal to zero) with fixed multiplicities of zeros and poles: Positivity: In genus $g=0$ we show any associated divisorial projection to $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$ is $F$-nef and hence conjectured to be nef. We compute the class for all genus when the divisorial projection forgets only simple zeros and show in these cases the genus $g=0$ projections are indeed nef. Hurwitz spaces: We show the Hurwitz spaces of degree $d$, genus $g$ covers of $\mathbb{P}^1$ with pure branching (one ramified point over the branch point) at all but possibly one branch point are irreducible if there are at least $3g+d-1$ simple branch points or $d-3$ simple branch points when $g=0$.

$k$-differentials on curves and rigid cycles in moduli space

For $g\geq2$, $j=1,\dots,g$ and $n\geq g+j$ we exhibit infinitely many new rigid and extremal effective codimension $j$ cycles in $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ from the strata of quadratic differentials and projections of these strata under forgetful morphisms and show the same holds for $k$-differentials with $k\geq 3$ if the strata are irreducible. We compute the class of the divisors in the case of quadratic differentials which contain the first known examples of effective divisors on $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ with negative $\psi_i$ coefficients.

Two moduli spaces of Calabi-Yau type

We show $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{10,10}$ and $\mathcal{F}_{11,9}$ have Kodaira dimension zero. Our method relies on the construction of a number of curves via nodal Lefschetz pencils on blown-up $K3$ surfaces. The construction further yields that any effective divisor in $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g}$ with slope $<6+(12-\delta)/(g+1)$ must contain the locus of curves that are the normalization of a $\delta$-nodal curve lying on a $K3$ surface of genus $g+\delta$.

Divisorial strata of abelian differentials

We compute a closed formula for the class of the closure of the locus of curves in $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_g$ that admit an abelian differential of signature $κ=(k_1,...,k_{g-2})$.

Cohomological vanishing on Siegel modular varieties and applications to lifting Siegel modular forms

We use vanishing results for sheaf cohomology on Siegel modular varieties to study two lifting problems: (a) When can Siegel modular forms (mod p) be lifted to characteristic zero? This uses and extends previous results for cusp forms by Stroh and Lan-Suh. (b) When is the restriction of Siegel modular forms to the boundary of the moduli space a surjective map? We investigate this question in arbitrary characteristic, generalising analytic results of Weissauer and Arakawa.
