Cyclic covers via mixed Hodge modules

Suppose we are given an arbitrary line bundle $\mathcal{L}$ on a complex algebraic variety $X$, not necessarily smooth. For a positive integer $N$, suppose there exists a global section $s \in \Gamma(X, \mathcal{L}^{N})$ that defines an effective Cartier divisor $D$. If we denote $\pi: Y \rightarrow X$ to be the $N$-fold cyclic covering of the divisor $D$ resulting from the global section $s$, we describe the cyclic covering in terms of Morihiko Saito's theory of mixed Hodge modules.

Topology and Euler characteristics of tropical varieties

We study Euler characteristics of tropical subvarieties of tropical abelian varieties. We prove that every H-regular subvariety, locally modeled on tropicalizations of sufficiently well-behaved very affine varieties, has nonnegative signed Euler characteristic. This gives a tropical analogue of a theorem of Green-Lazarsfeld for subvarieties of complex abelian varieties. The main input is a local vanishing theorem for H-regular tropical fans, which also yields a Lefschetz-type theorem for affine H-regular tropical varieties. We further show that the signed Euler characteristic inequality fails for general tropical subvarieties of tropical abelian varieties, and we construct a 3-dimensional tropical fan whose link is not homotopy equivalent to a bouquet of 2-spheres.

Differential forms on varieties with pre-$k$-rational singularities

Let $X$ be a complex algebraic variety. With $\mathbb{Q}$-coefficients, the compactly supported cohomology groups $H^{i}_{c}(X, \mathbb{Q})$ and the compactly supported intersection cohomology groups $IH^{i}_{c}(X, \mathbb{Q})$ have mixed Hodge structures. We compare these two mixed Hodge structures for varieties with pre-$k$-rational singularities. We then study various notions of differential forms on varieties with pre-$k$-rational singularities. In particular, we investigate the depth of the complex $\underline{\Omega}^{p}_{X}$, where $\underline{\Omega}^{p}_{X}$ is the $p^{th}$-graded piece of the Du Bois complex.

Differential Forms and Hodge Structures on Singular Varieties

We compare a couple of notions of differential form on singular complex algebraic varieties, and relate them to the outermost associated graded spaces of the Hodge filtration of ordinary and intersection cohomology. In particular, we introduce and study singularities, that we call quasi-rational, which are normal and such that for all p, the zeroth cohomology sheaf of the complex of Du Bois p-forms is isomorphic to the direct image of p-forms from a desingularization. We show that an isolated singularity is rational if and only if it is quasi-rational, Du Bois, and certain Hodge numbers of the local mixed Hodge structures vanish.

Equivariant Hodge modules and rational singularities

We define a notion of Hodge modules with rational singularities. A variety has rational singularities in the usual sense, if it is normal and the Hodge module related to intersection cohomology has rational singularities in the present sense. Our main result is a generalization of Boutot's theorem that if a reductive group acts on an affine variety with a stable point, and $H$ is an equivariant Hodge module with rational singularities, then the induced module on the GIT quotient also has rational singularities.

Vanishing of Local Cohomology with Applications to Hodge Theory

Let $\textbf{H} = ((H, F^{\bullet}), L)$ be a polarized variation of Hodge structure on a smooth quasi-projective variety $U.$ By M. Saito's theory of mixed Hodge modules, the variation of Hodge structure $\textbf{H}$ can be viewed as a polarized Hodge module $\mathcal{M} \in HM(U).$ Let $X$ be a compactification of $U,$ and $j:U \hookrightarrow X$ is the natural map. In this paper, we use local cohomology with mixed Hodge module theory to study $j_{+}\mathcal{M} \in D^{b}MHM(X).$ In particular, we study the graded pieces of the de Rham complex $Gr^{F}_{p}DR(j_{+}\mathcal{M}) \in D^{b}_{coh}(X),$ and the Hodge structure of $H^{i}(U,L)$ for $i$ in sufficiently low degrees.
