Spinning test particles in a weak gravitational wave and the memory effect

In this work, we investigate the worldline deviation of spinning test particles in a weak gravitational wave (GW) spacetime. Within the pole-dipole approximation and the Tulczyjew spin supplementary condition, we consider the modified deviation equation, which contains the standard geodesic deviation term and an additional contribution generated by the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon (MPD) force. We demonstrate how the deviation equation can be solved under viable approximations to yield a new expression for the change in the deviation vector in terms of the perturbation $h_{ij}$, its time derivative, the spin vector components and the longitudinal and transverse components of the deviation. The spin-curvature coupling is shown to play a crucial role in controlling the change in deviation. We then use this result to investigate the changes in the form and expressions of the net GW signal as well as our understanding of GW memory, in the presence of spin. We conclude with our attempts on the measurability of this spin-induced effect \emph{vis-a-vis} present GW observations.

Gravitational wave radiation from periodic orbits in regular black holes

Gravitational wave radiation from periodic orbits in some standard regular black hole spacetimes is studied, primarily using known methods (numerical and analytic). We demonstrate specific differences with the singular Schwarzschild geometry by analysing orbit characteristics, gravitational wave strain profiles, and the corresponding power spectrum density, for different values of the regularising parameter `$g$'. Further, we assess our results vis-a-vis the LISA sensitivity curves and show how our results may be useful while developing templates for detecting regular black holes as viable alternatives to the singular ones. The appendices to our article contain details on errors in our estimates and provide for the first time, some exact analytical expressions on gravitational wave radiation from different types of periodic orbits in Schwarzschild spacetime.

Displacement memory in regular black hole spacetimes

Displacement memory, induced by a wave pulse in a regular black hole spacetime, is studied using geodesic (timelike) separation and geodesic deviation. The presence of the wave pulse in such a black hole is modeled via a function $H(u)$ appearing in a restricted version of a generic Bondi-Sachs type line element. Choosing a sech-squared profile for $H(u)$, we first study (numerically) geodesic separation and geodesic deviation in a flat background. Thereafter, similar investigations are carried out in the presence of the black hole, but in regions far away from the vicinity of the horizon. Our results suggest the presence of a distinct displacement memory effect, which depends on the value of the regularisation parameter $g$ as well as the pulse height. Between different types of regular black holes, one notices parameter-dependent changes in the net displacement memory. Further, a clear difference in the magnitude of displacement memory (at large $u$) in regular and singular black holes is also visible in our numerical results.

A note on the Penrose process in rotating regular black holes

We investigate the Penrose process of energy extraction in the context of rotating regular black holes. For the Neves-Saa class of regular black hole solutions, which includes the Bardeen, Hayward and Fan-Wang spacetimes as special cases, the extraction efficiency is bounded above by the known value for Kerr spacetime. However, in the case of a new rotating regular black hole which does not have a Schwarzschild singular limit for zero rotation, the extraction efficiency can indeed become very large, as shown in our analysis here.

Quasinormal spectra of a wormhole family: overtone features and a parameter-controlled redshift

Though investigated extensively in the past, we take a detailed relook at the study of quasinormal modes (QNM) in a known family of wormholes (ultrastatic ($g_{00}=-1$), as well as spacetimes with different, non-constant $g_{00}$), which includes the familiar Bronnikov-Ellis spacetime as a special case. Our focus here is to go beyond the fundamental mode and obtain some of the QNM overtones using a suitable numerical scheme. Scalar and axial gravitational QNMs including two or three overtones are obtained for the family of ultrastatic geometries and their parameter dependencies are shown explicitly. Further, we comment on how (a) the overtones may influence the time-domain profile in a perturbation and (b) in what sense, the use of overtones may help in distinguishing between different geometries within the family. Finally, we show how an effect somewhat similar to the so-called `environment induced redshift' of QNMs, introduced recently (Phys. Rev. D \textbf{111}, 064026 (2025)), may be obtained for spacetimes with non-constant $g_{00}$, via an appropriate tuning of available metric parameters which systematically modify the shapes of the effective potentials arising in the perturbation equations.

Diverse regular spacetimes using a parametrised density profile

We explore the construction of diverse regular spacetimes (black holes and defects) in General Relativity (GR) using a generic parametrised density profile (the Dekel-Zhao profile), which includes, for specific parameter choices, various well-known examples usually studied in the context of dark matter halos. Our solutions, in the Schwarzschild gauge, include new regular black holes as well as non-singular solutions representing spacetime defects. For a sub-class of metrics, a TOV equation approach with a chosen equation of state works. The status of the energy conditions and the issue of geodesic completeness are explored in detail. We also provide possible Lagrangian density constructions for the matter energy-momentum tensors. Further, we study the shadow radius of the new regular black holes, and compare our findings with available observational results from the EHT collaboration. Finally, for the defect solution, we present a model for a stable star (a gravastar) by explicit use of the junction conditions and obtain relevant consequences highlighting its characteristic features.

Pulse-induced memory-like effect in cyclotron motion?

We study how a charged particle moving in a uniform magnetic field along its standard circular path (cyclotron motion) reacts to a short-duration, homogeneous, uniform electric field pulse injected in the plane perpendicular to the magnetic field. A `permanent' change in the radius of the initial circle and a shift of its centre is noted at later times, after the pulse is switched off. The velocity vector (components and magnitude) undergoes a change too, akin to a `velocity kick'. The cause behind this permanent change appears to be linked to the difference between the vector potentials before and after the duration of the electric pulse. Further, we show how such vector potentials in the past and future are related through a gauge transformation. In summary, our results suggest a pulse-induced `electromagnetic memory-like effect', which is not quite a `wave memory', but, nevertheless, has similar features within a simple, non-relativistic context.

New rotating Lorentzian wormhole spacetime

A rotating version of a known static, spherically symmetric, zero Ricci scalar Lorentzian wormhole is constructed. It turns out that for this given non-rotating geometry, the standard Newman-Janis algorithm does not produce a rotating wormhole and, therefore, the method pioneered by Azreg-A\"inou has to be used. The rotating spacetime thus obtained is shown to be regular with wormhole features, though it is no longer a $R=0$ spacetime. The required matter is found to violate the energy conditions, as expected. A few other characteristic properties of this new rotating spacetime are mentioned. Finally, we calculate the shadow for this geometry and discuss its features {\em vis-a-vis} the Kerr geometry and available event horizon telescope observations.

Closed strings in a class of pp-wave spacetimes and the memory effect

We study closed string evolution in the pp-wave spacetime assuming different pulse shapes (square and sech-squared) in the exact gravitational wave metric. It is shown that the shape of a circular closed string deforms permanently, after the pulse has departed. The worldsheet geometry also displays characteristic permanent changes caused by the gravitational wave pulse. The above effects collectively demonstrate features akin to what is known as `memory' in gravitational wave physics.

Modelling Einstein cluster using Einasto profile

We demonstrate a general relativistic approach to model dark matter halos using the Einstein cluster, with the matter stress-energy generated by collisionless particles moving on circular geodesics in all possible angular directions and orbital radii. Such matter, as is known, allows an anisotropic pressure profile with non-zero tangential but zero radial pressure. We use the Einasto density profile for the Einstein cluster. Analytical studies on its properties (metric functions) and stability issues are investigated. Further, to establish this model (with the Einasto profile) as one for a dark matter halo, we use the SPARC galactic rotation curve data and estimate the best-fit values for the model parameters. General relativistic features (beyond the Keplerian velocities) such as the tangential pressure profile, are quantitatively explored. Thus, Einstein clusters with the Einasto profile, which tally well with observations, may be considered as a viable model for dark matter halos.

Shadows of a generic class of spherically symmetric, static spacetimes

We explore the characteristics of shadows for a general class of spherically symmetric, static spacetimes, which may arise in general relativity or in modified theories of gravity. The chosen line element involves a sum (with constant but different coefficients) of integer powers of $\frac{1}{\text{r}}$ in $\text{g}_\text{tt}$ and $\text{g}_\text{rr}$, in the Schwarzschild gauge. We begin our discussion by motivating the line element through a study of the energy conditions (null and weak) and the extent to which they are satisfied/violated for diverse choices of the parameters appearing in the metric functions. Subsequently, we construct the circular shadows and analyse the dependence of the shadow radius on the metric parameters. We find that with specific choices of the metric parameters (within the ranges allowed by the energy conditions) one can, in principle, obtain values that conform with recent observations on shadows, as available in the literature. We also mention where such metrics may arise (i.e., in which theory of gravity and the physical scenario therein), thereby proposing that the observed shadows may be representative signatures of different theoretical contexts.

Novel regular black holes: geometry, source and shadow

We propose a two-parameter, static and spherically symmetric regular geometry, which, for specific parameter values represents a regular black hole. The matter required to support such spacetimes within the framework of General Relativity (GR), is found to violate the energy conditions, though not in the entire domain of the radial coordinate. A particular choice of the parameters reduces the regular black hole to a singular, mutated Reissner-Nordstrom geometry. It also turns out that our regular black hole is geodesically complete. Fortunately, despite energy condition violation, we are able to construct a viable source, within the framework of GR coupled to matter, for our regular geometry. The source term involves a nonlinear magnetic monopole in a chosen version of nonlinear electrodynamics. We also suggest an alternative approach towards constructing a source, using the effective Einstein equations which arise in the context of braneworld gravity. Finally, we obtain the circular shadow profile of our regular black hole and provide a preliminary estimate of the metric parameters using recent observational results from the EHT collaboration.

Shadows in dyonic Kerr-Sen black holes

Black holes with dyonic charges in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-axion supergravity theory are revisited in the context of black hole shadows. We consider static as well as rotating (namely the dyonic Kerr-Sen) black holes. The matter stress-energy tensor components, sourced by the Maxwell, axion and dilaton fields satisfy the standard energy conditions. The analytical expressions for the horizon and the shadow radius of the static spacetimes demonstrate their dependence on $P^2+Q^2$ ($P$, $Q$ the magnetic and electric charges, respectively) and the mass parameter $M$. The shadow radius lies in the range $2M <R_{shadow}<3\sqrt{3} M$ and there is no stable photon orbit outside the horizon. Further, shadows cast by the rotating dyonic Kerr-Sen black holes are also studied and compared graphically with their Kerr-Newman and Kerr-Sen counterparts. Deviation of the shadow boundary is prominent with the variation of the magnetic charge, for the relatively slowly rotating dyonic Kerr-Sen spacetimes. We test any possible presence of a magnetic monopole charge in the backdrop of recent EHT observations for the supermassive black holes M87$^*$ and Sgr A$^*$. Deviation from circularity of the shadow boundary ($\Delta C$) and deviation of the average shadow radius from the Schwarzschild shadow radius (quantified as the fractional deviation parameter $\delta$) are the two observables used here. Observational bound on $\Delta C$ (available only for M87$^*$) is satisfied for all theoretically allowed regions of parameter space and thus cannot constrain the parameters. The observational bound on $\delta$ available for Sgr A$^*$ translates into an upper limit on any possible magnetic monopole charge linked to Sgr A$^*$ and is given as $P\lesssim 0.873\, M$. Such a constraint on $P$ is however expected to be far more stringent for other astrophysical tests.

Generalised Hayward spacetimes: Geometry, matter and scalar quasinormal modes

Bardeen's 1968 idea of a regular black hole spacetime was revived by Hayward in 2006 through the construction of a new example of such a geometry. Later it was realised by Neves and Saa, that a wider, two-parameter class exists, with Bardeen and Hayward spacetimes as special cases. In this article, we revisit and generalise the Hayward spacetime by applying the Damour-Solodukhin (DS) prescription. Recalling the DS suggestion of a deformed Schwarzschild spacetime where $g_{tt} = -\left (1-\frac{2M_1}{r}\right )$, $g_{rr} = \left (1-\frac{2M_2}{r}\right )^{-1}$ and $M_1\neq M_2$, we propose a similar deformation of the Hayward geometry. The $g_{tt}$ and $g_{rr}$ in the original Hayward line element remain functionally the same, {\em albeit} mutations introduced via differently valued metric parameters, following the DS idea. This results in a plethora of spacetime geometries, known as well as new, and including singular black holes, wormholes or regular black holes. We first study the geometric features and matter content of each of such spacetimes in some detail. Subsequently, we find the scalar quasinormal modes corresponding to scalar wave propagation in these geometries. We investigate how the real and imaginary parts of the quasinormal modes depend on the values and ranges of the metric parameters used to classify the geometries. Finally, we argue how our results on this family of spacetimes suggest their utility as black hole mimickers.

Wormholes with a warped extra dimension?

We investigate the role of a specifically warped extra dimension in constructing examples of higher dimensional spacetimes representing Lorentzian wormholes. The warping chosen is largely inspired by the well-known non-static Witten bubble of nothing, though our spacetimes are static and geometrically different. Vacuum solutions in $D\geq 5$ dimensions and others (non-asymptotically flat) with `perfectly normal' matter stress energy are interpreted as possible Lorentzian wormholes. Asymptotically flat wormholes in $D\geq 5$ with `exotic matter' and within this class of spacetimes also appear to exist in all dimensions. A wormhole-black hole correspondence via double Wick rotation is revisited and discussed. Finally, geodesic motion as well as the behaviour of geodesic congruences, in the sub-class of five dimensional, warped, vacuum wormhole spacetimes is also briefly analysed, with the aim of obtaining characteristic properties and specific signatures which may help improve our understanding of these geometries.

A simple analytic example of the gravitational wave memory effect

We report an analytical example of the gravitational wave memory effect in exact plane wave spacetimes. A square pulse profile is chosen which gives rise to a curved wave region sandwiched between two flat Minkowski spacetimes. Working in the Brinkmann coordinate system, we solve the geodesic equations exactly in all three regions. Issues related to the continuity and differentiability of the solutions at the boundaries of the pulse are addressed. The evolution of the geodesic separation reveals displacement and velocity memory effects with quantitative estimates depending on initial values and the amplitude, width of the pulse. The deformation caused by the pulse on a ring of particles is then examined in detail. Formation of caustics is found in both scenarios i.e. evolution of separation for a pair of geodesics and shape deformation of a ring of particles -- a feature consistent with previous work on geodesic congruences in this spacetime. In summary, our analysis provides a useful illustration of memory effects involving closed-form exact expressions.

A curious variant of Bronnikov-Ellis spacetime

We explore a curious but simple variant of the Bronnikov-Ellis (BE) wormhole spacetime with a specific `red-shift function' (i.e. $g_{00}$) in the line element. The matter required to support such a geometry violates the local Null Energy Condition (NEC) only around the throat and the global Averaged Null Energy Condition (ANEC) integral along radial null geodesics may be adjusted to arbitrarily small negative values, using metric parameters. Properties of the line element manifest in the metric functions, curvature and the required matter stress energy are delineated. Further, exact null and timelike geodesics are found and generic features of periodic/non-periodic motion (closed, bounded or open) are presented. Scalar wave propagation is also solved analytically, thereby providing a partial check on the stability of the geometry under scalar perturbations. Interestingly, we note that this BE variant may be viewed as a four dimensional, timelike section of a five dimensional, static, non-vacuum, Witten bubble--like geometry which, with an extra dimension, also has wormhole features and is threaded by matter satisfying the NEC.

Perturbations of giant magnons and single spikes in $\mathbb R \times S^2$

Perturbations of giant magnons and single spikes in a $2+1$ dimensional $\mathbb R \times S^2$ background spacetime are analysed. Using the form of the giant magnon solution in the Jevicki-Jin gauge, the well-known Jacobi equation for small normal deformations of an embedded time-like surface are written down. Surprisingly, this equation reduces to a simple wave equation in a Minkowski background. The finiteness of perturbations and the ensuing stability of such giant magnons under small deformations are then discussed. It turns out that only the zero mode has finite deformations and is stable. Thereafter, we move on to explore the single spike solution in the Jevicki-Jin gauge. We obtain and solve the perturbation equation numerically and address stability issues.
