Description of nucleon transfer reactions at intermediate energies within the impulse picture

Background: At intermediate energies, transfer reactions are suppressed because the momentum-matching condition is difficult to satisfy. In the standard distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA), a high momentum component of the transferred particle is required to match the large momentum transfer. Purpose: We investigate the applicability of the distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA) for describing ($p,d$) transfer reactions at intermediate energies by performing a comparative study with the standard DWBA. DWIA, which has been successful for knockout reactions, is expected to provide an alternative reaction mechanism at this energy region. Methods: Both DWBA and DWIA formalisms are applied to the $^{16}$O($p,d$){}$^{15}$O reaction at 200~MeV. In DWBA, the reaction is described as a neutron pickup, while in DWIA, it is treated as a quasi-elastic scattering from a preformed deuteron cluster in the target. Results: The DWBA calculation is in good agreement with the experimental data, reproducing both the angular distribution and the absolute magnitude of the cross section with a reasonable spectroscopic factor. In contrast, the DWIA calculation, while qualitatively reproducing the trend of the angular distribution, severely underestimates the cross section by about two orders of magnitude. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that conventional DWBA provides a more suitable description for the $^{16}$O($p,d$){}$^{15}$O reaction at 200~MeV. The failure of DWIA in this case, unlike its success in knockout reactions, raises open questions about its applicability to transfer reactions. This motivates the need for systematic investigations to delineate the applicability of both reaction mechanisms under various conditions.

Systematic analysis of the nuclear absorption effect on the cross section of the knockout reaction

Recent studies on nucleon and alpha knockout reactions have shown that the distorted-wave impulse approximation (DWIA) is a simple and accurate method to describe these reactions. As it has been argued for decades, the nuclear absorption is one of the most important ingredients of the DWIA calculation. In this work, we systematically investigate the absorption effects on the cross sections of the nucleon and alpha knockout reactions. To do this, we calculate the ratio of the cross sections of the DWIA and plane-wave impulse approximation (PWIA) and examine its dependence on the mass number and single-particle orbital of the knocked-out particles. We will discuss the specific characteristics of the absorption effect for each reaction.

Extension of the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility: Third White Paper

The J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility was constructed with an aim to explore the origin and evolution of matter in the universe through the experiments with intense particle beams. In the past decade, many results on particle and nuclear physics have been obtained at the present facility. To expand the physics programs to unexplored regions never achieved, the extension project of the Hadron Experimental Facility has been extensively discussed. This white paper presents the physics of the extension of the Hadron Experimental Facility for resolving the issues in the fields of the strangeness nuclear physics, hadron physics, and flavor physics.

Charmed baryon productions in proton-antiproton collisions in effective Lagrangian and Regge approaches

Strange and charmed baryon productions from proton-antiproton collisions are studied in the effective Lagrangian and Regge approaches. We include only the $t$-channel dynamics which is dominant for the diffractive region that is relevant in the present discussions. For strangeness productions, the coupling constants for $K$ meson are determined by $SU(3)$ relations while other unknown parameters for $K^{*}$ couplings and for form factors are fixed by existing observed data for strangeness productions. By extrapolating the amplitudes for strangeness productions to those for charm, we predict charm production cross sections. It turns out that the total cross sections are $10^{4}$ to $10^{5}$ smaller than those of strangeness productions, depending on the final states. By using the known total cross sections for strangeness, $\sim 10^{2} \mu b$ for $\Lambda \bar{\Lambda}$ and, $\sim 10^{1} \mu b$ for $\Sigma \bar{\Lambda}$ the total cross sections for charm productions are predicted to be $\sim 10^{-2} \mu b$ for $\Lambda_{c} \bar{\Lambda}_c$, $\sim 10^{-3} \mu b$ for $\Sigma_{c} \bar{\Lambda}_c$, and $\sim 10^{-4} \mu b$ for $\Sigma_{c} \bar{\Sigma}_c$. Our results can be tested in the future experiments at $\bar{\text{P}}$ANDA.

Heavy baryon production with an instanton interaction

We propose a new reaction mechanism for the study of strange and charmed baryon productions. In this mechanism we consider the correlation of two quarks in baryons, so it can be called the two-quark process. As in the previously studied one-quark process, we find large production rates for charmed baryons in comparison with strange baryons. Moreover, the new mechanism causes the excitation of both the $\rho$ mode and the $\lambda$ mode. Using the wave functions for baryons from a quark model, we compute the production rates of various baryon states. We find that the production rates reflect the structure of the wave functions that imply the usefulness of the reactions for the study of baryon structures.

Strange and charmed baryon productions with an instanton interaction

We study strange and charmed baryon productions, ${\pi + p \rightarrow K(D) + Y(Y_c)}$, where ${Y(Y_c)}$ is a strange(charmed) baryon of a ground or an excited state. We propose a new production mechanism where two quarks in the baryon participate in the reaction (two-quark process), which enables excitation of both ${\lambda}$- and ${\rho}$-modes of the baryons. To deal with the two-quark process, we consider the 't Hooft six-quark interaction from the instanton model. We study production rates in relation with the structure of charmed baryons for the forward angle scattering.

Vector and Axial-vector form factors in radiative kaon decay and flavor SU(3) symmetry breaking

We study the vector and axial-vector form factors of radiative kaon decay within the framework of the gauged nonlocal effective chiral action from the instanton vacuum, focusing on the effects of flavor SU(3) symmetry breaking. The general tendency of the results are rather similar to those of radiative pion decays: The nonlocal contributions make the results of the vector form factor increased by about $20\,\%$, whereas they reduce those of the axial-vector form factor by almost $30\,\%$. Suppressing the prefactors consisting of the kaon mass and the pion decay constant, we scrutinize how the kaon form factors undergo changes as the mass of the strange current quark is varied. Those related to the vector and second axial-vector form factors tend to decrease monotonically as the strange quark mass increases, whereas that for the axial-vector form factor decreases. When $K\to e\nu\gamma$ decay is considered, both the results of the vector and axial-vector form factors at the zero momentum transfer are in good agreement with the experimental data. The results are also compared with those from chiral perturbation theory to $p^6$ order.

Pion radiative weak decay from the instanton vacuum

We investigate the vector and axial-vector form factors for the pion radiative weak decays $\pi^+\to e^+\nu_e \gamma$ and $\pi^+\to e^+\nu_e e^+ e^-$, based on the gauged effective chiral action from the instanton vacuum in the large $N_c$ limit. The nonlocal contributions, which arise from the gauging of the action, enhance the vector form factor by about $20\,\%$, whereas the axial-vector form factor is reduced by almost $30\,\%$. Both the results for the vector and axial-vector form factors at the zero momentum transfer are in good agreement with the experimental data. The dependence of the form factors on the momentum transfer is also studied. The slope parameters are computed and compared with other works.
