Quasinormal modes as exterior probes of black hole interiors in our Universe

We consider a scenario in which a black hole is enclosed in a reflecting timelike cavity and linearly perturbed. For the resulting quasinormal spectra of gravitational, electromagnetic, and other perturbations, in conjunction with our arXiv:2606.11297, we establish a thermal product formula and derive a universal asymptotic expression for high quasinormal overtones. Both results hold in asymptotically flat, de Sitter, and Anti-de Sitter spacetimes (known previously). This spectral signature directly encodes information about the black hole interior and its singularity, and is, at least in principle, accessible to an observer outside the event horizon. We then propose a concrete observational setup in which accreting plasma plays the role of a partially transmissive mirror. For small, hypothetical, primordial black holes, we argue that one may thereby be able to extract concrete information about the black hole interior from electromagnetic waves in the radiowave spectrum.

Bouncing Geodesics, Singularities, and the Cavity Thermal Product Formula in Asymptotically Flat and de Sitter Black Holes

We investigate the existence and implications of ``bouncing geodesics'' in asymptotically flat Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild--de Sitter black holes. These trajectories, which probe the high-curvature regions near the black hole singularity, correspond to specific ``bouncing singularities'' in the bulk retarded Green's function. We provide a precise description of these singularities by combining the local Hadamard form with the global propagation of singularities theorem. We then derive the critical times at which the bulk retarded correlator becomes singular, considering all possible anchorings of the bouncing geodesics, including null infinity and the cosmological horizon. Finally, for black holes enclosed in a reflecting cavity, we establish a universal connection between the locations of the bouncing singularities and the spectrum of cavity quasinormal modes (QNMs) by deriving a cavity version of the thermal product formula, analogous to the one known for anti-de Sitter black holes. This relation allows one to extract information about the black hole interior from the asymptotic QNM spectrum measured at a reflecting hypersurface, even when the cosmological constant is zero or positive. We confirm this prediction through explicit examples by computing the cavity QNMs of scalar and electromagnetic fields, as well as gravitational waves, in spacetimes with asymptotically flat and de Sitter black holes.

Bouncing geodesics, black hole singularities, and singularities of thermal correlators

Bouncing geodesics have been used as valuable probes of black hole singularities. In the dual boundary theory, the presence of bouncing geodesics is encoded in the analytic structure of correlation functions. Thus, when their existence is related to the presence of a black hole singularity, this presents a practical holographic framework to analyse, diagnose, and classify spacetimes with curvature singularities. To make this intuition precise, we use the Hadamard theory of hyperbolic differential equations to prove that both bulk and boundary retarded propagators diverge whenever two points can be connected by a null geodesic. We clarify why this statement remains valid beyond the geodesic regime (for operators of any dimension) and examine how holographic renormalisation modifies the structure of the dual propagator. We also present a general characterisation of bouncing geodesics and the associated singularities in correlation functions for arbitrary spacetimes. Furthermore, we compare the analytic structure of the correlators in position and momentum space and discuss explicit examples. Finally, we demonstrate the validity and concrete limitations of the bouncing geodesic approach to the study of black hole singularities. In particular, we show an explicit example of a black hole in the self-dual linear axion model, which has a curvature singularity despite the absence of bouncing geodesics.

Fooling the Censor: Going beyond inner horizons with the OPE

The analytic structure of holographic correlation functions at finite temperature contains information about curvature singularities of black holes in AdS. We compute the Operator Product Expansion (OPE) coefficients of the holographic two-point function of scalar operators at finite temperature and finite chemical potential. We show that the stress-tensor and current (T+J) sector of the OPE contains a singularity in the complex time plane at a location that can be identified with the time-shift of a bouncing geodesic in the charged black hole geometry: The geodesic starts at a boundary of a charged black hole in AdS, bounces off the timelike singularity, before returning to a different asymptotic boundary on the same side of the Penrose diagram. We show that the singularity in the T+J sector is smooth across the point where black hole becomes extremal, indicating that the analytic properties of holographic correlators could potentially probe naked singularities.

Thermal Correlators and Black Holes: From Infinity to Singularity

This thesis explores thermal correlation functions in conformal field theories (CFTs) and their connection to black hole geometry within the AdS/CFT correspondence, using a near-boundary expansion as the main tool. Two themes are examined. First, we show that the stress-tensor sector of boundary correlators encodes information about black hole singularities. By resumming contributions from the stress-tensor and its composites, we uncover branch-point singularities in complex time, corresponding to bulk geodesics that cross the horizon, reflect off the singularity, and return to the boundary. We further clarify the role of double-trace operators in restoring analyticity and the KMS condition, and establish a map between bulk geodesics and OPE sectors of the thermal correlator. Second, we study thermal stress-tensor correlators in CFTs with pure gravity duals. Through holographic calculations in Einstein and Gauss-Bonnet gravity, we identify a robust universal behaviour - near the lightcone the correlators are described by three universal functions. The bulk Lagrangian only affects the arguments of these functions through corrections to the cubic stress-tensor couplings and the thermal stress-tensor one-point function. We relate this behaviour to causality constraints such as the averaged null energy condition (ANEC), showing that ANEC saturation makes the correlator temperature-independent. Overall, our results demonstrate that thermal correlators - especially their stress-tensor sector - serve as sensitive probes of black hole interiors, causality, and universality in holographic CFTs.

Black Hole Singularity from OPE

Eternal asymptotically AdS black holes are dual to thermofield double states in the boundary CFT. It has long been known that black hole singularities have certain signatures in boundary thermal two-point functions related to null geodesics bouncing off the singularities (bouncing geodesics). In this paper we shed light on the manifestations of black hole singularities in the dual CFT. We decompose the boundary CFT correlator of scalar operators using the Operator Product Expansion (OPE) and focus on the contributions from the identity, the stress tensor, and its products. We show that this part of the correlator develops singularities precisely at the points that are connected by bulk bouncing geodesics. Black hole singularities are thus encoded in the analytic behavior of the boundary correlators determined by multiple stress tensor exchanges. Furthermore, we show that in the limit where the conformal dimension of the operators is large, the sum of multi-stress-tensor contributions develops a branch point singularity as predicted by the geodesic analysis. We also argue that the appearance of complexified geodesics, which play an important role in computing the full correlator, is related to the contributions of the double-trace operators in the boundary CFT.

Thermal Stress Tensor Correlators near Lightcone and Holography

We consider thermal stress-tensor two-point functions in holographic theories in the near-lightcone regime and analyse them using the operator product expansion (OPE). In the limit we consider only the leading-twist multi-stress tensors contribute and the correlators depend on a particular combination of lightcone momenta. We argue that such correlators are described by three universal functions, which can be holographically computed in Einstein gravity; higher-derivative terms in the gravitational Lagrangian enter the arguments of these functions via the cubic stress-tensor couplings and the thermal stress-tensor expectation value in the dual CFT. We compute the retarded correlators and observe that in addition to the perturbative OPE, which contributes to the real part, there is a non-perturbative contribution to the imaginary part.

Freedom near Lightcone and ANEC Saturation

Averaged Null Energy Conditions (ANECs) hold in unitary quantum field theories. In conformal field theories, ANECs in states created by the application of the stress tensor to the vacuum lead to three constraints on the stress-tensor three-point couplings, depending on the choice of polarization. The same constraints follow from considering two-point functions of the stress tensor in a thermal state and focusing on the contribution of the stress tensor in the operator product expansion (OPE). One can observe this in holographic Gauss-Bonnet gravity, where ANEC saturation coincides with the appearance of superluminal signal propagation in thermal states. We show that, when this happens, the corresponding generalizations of ANECs for higher-spin multi-stress tensor operators with minimal twist are saturated as well and all contributions from such operators to the thermal two-point functions vanish in the lightcone limit. This leads to a special near-lightcone behavior of the thermal stress-tensor correlators -- they take the vacuum form, independent of temperature.

Thermal Stress Tensor Correlators, OPE and Holography

In strongly coupled conformal field theories with a large central charge important light degrees of freedom are the stress tensor and its composites, multi-stress tensors. We consider the OPE expansion of two-point functions of the stress tensor in thermal and heavy states and focus on the contributions from the stress tensor and double-stress tensors in four spacetime dimensions. We compare the results to the holographic finite temperature two-point functions and read off conformal data beyond the leading order in the large central charge expansion. In particular, we compute corrections to the OPE coefficients which determine the near-lightcone behavior of the correlators. We also compute the anomalous dimensions of the double-stress tensor operators.
