The Editor Has Read-Only Access: Correctness Signals in Diffusion Language Models

Diffusion language models generate code by repeatedly updating a partially masked sequence. We ask whether their internal activations encode code correctness and whether that information can improve generation. Across six diffusion models, linear probes distinguish passing from failing attempts, with the strongest reads generally appearing beyond the early layers. Controls using small semantic mutations support a connection to correctness rather than surface style alone. In comparisons with model confidence, probe point estimates offer no consistent advantage. Adding a probe-derived direction to the residual stream does not yield a dependable improvement in the tested steering settings, while the opposite direction degrades performance. We distinguish these observations from claims about statistical significance or a general inability to steer. Supplementary methods, archived results, and code document the tested interventions and the limits of their statistical calibration and reproducibility.

Quadratic bounds for uncompletable words and matrix mortality

Every finite nonempty incomplete uniquely decipherable code with maximum word length $k$ has an uncompletable word of length at most $4k^2-3k$. The bound is independent of the number of codewords and their total length. Deleting a complete codeword cycle gives a finite path-counting identity; Kraft equality then supplies a short word of deficient compressed mass. Cyclic averaging and padding turn it into an uncompletable word. Conditional expectation makes the construction polynomial-time and also decides completeness. First-return words extend the bound to mortal families of nonnegative integer $n\times n$ matrices with joint spectral radius at most one, provided every strongly connected component has a vertex meeting every cycle. Such a family has a zero product of length at most $4n^2-3n$. A binary partial deterministic family with $2k-1$ states has shortest zero product of length $k^2+k-1$, establishing the optimal quadratic order. The bounds and the explicit-code algorithm, including its polynomial work bound, are proved in Lean.

Decodable In-Context State and Model Output Across Training

Prior work established that a probe can decode an in-context binding on model errors and that probe-guided steering can repair some of them. We follow probe accuracy, model output, and steering response across public pretraining and post-training checkpoints. Probe accuracy rises during Pythia pretraining, while probe-guided steering moves from negligible all-trial benefit to a larger benefit at two model sizes. Saved scores distinguish probe-correct errors with low and above-uniform model probability for the correct candidate. Oracle-target steering already repairs many early errors, but saved aggregates cannot separate target quality from intervention sensitivity. A held-out comparison of decoders trained on the final state or candidate logits finds no detected final-state advantage on late-checkpoint model errors. An information-theoretic counterexample explains why decodability on errors alone cannot establish discarded output information. The connection to downstream omissions remains open.

In-Context Binding Capacity in Language Models

How many assignments can a language model recall before it loses track of which value belongs to which entity? We measure this limit using continuous recall curves for 12 models at or below 3B parameters and a threshold sweep over 30 open models up to 12B. On the continuous curves, the load at which recall falls halfway to chance follows $K_{50}=cN^α$, with $α=0.820$ and $R^2=0.73$. The broader sweep shows an eightfold range associated with pretraining recipe, although the continuous curves show no detectable recipe effect after controlling for scale, with few modern models in the fit. We derive why interference can lower measured capacity by reducing single-binding recall even when the load-dependent recall profile is unchanged. Direct task training also exceeds the extrapolated zero-shot law, but different measurement criteria prevent interpreting that comparison as a capacity gain. Its formation times follow a power-law form in two independent codebases, conditional on runs that succeed. Together, these results characterize capacity at the model's query interface. Bounds on joint recall and a decomposition of policy errors connect this measurement to working memory and instruction following, without treating recall as a measure of alignment. The controlled task also provides a baseline for testing whether binding limits constrain world-state tracking; the present experiments do not measure state updates or downstream transfer.

Legible Failures: Detecting and Repairing In-Context Binding Errors

A wrong answer does not show whether the model lacked the needed information or held it and failed to use it. On an entity-obligation binding task, a language model can emit an incorrect prompt-supplied binding while a linear probe can recover the correct one from its frozen hidden state. We measure how often this occurs across 16 public checkpoints, each evaluated with three seeds. We fit a probe on a training fold, select its layer on a validation fold, and report results on a disjoint test fold. On the trials each model gets wrong, probe accuracy exceeds the strict present-obligation baseline, 1/K = 0.125, by +0.196 (95% CI [+0.101, +0.296], bootstrapped over models). A query-entity counterfactual rules out token presence and recency. A score built from the sign of probe-output disagreement improves failure detection over the model's own confidence by +0.079 AUROC (95% CI [+0.036, +0.126]). Raw probe confidence gives no measurable improvement over model confidence. Steering the residual stream toward the probe-decoded binding, with no gold label, raises accuracy on all eight models tested by a mean of +0.168 (95% CI [+0.066, +0.280]). Where recent studies report that probe-detected errors are resistant to interventions, we find that in-context binding is a setting in which probes are actionable.
