Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation in the right half-plane

The Szeg\"o-Dirichlet kernel of the right half-plane $\mathbb H_{1/2}$ is given by ${\varkappa}(s, u) = \zeta(s+\overline{u}),$ $s, u \in \mathbb H_{1/2},$ where $\zeta$ denotes the Riemann zeta function. We show that none of the positive integer powers of $\varkappa$ has $2$-point scalar Pick property. Nevertheless, a network realization formula for the right half-plane $\mathbb H_0$ is obtained.

Ces\`{a}ro Operators on Rooted Directed Trees

In this paper, we introduce and investigate the notion of the Ces\'aro operator $C_{\mathscr T}$ on a rooted directed tree $\mathscr T.$ When $\mathscr T$ is the rooted tree with no branching vertex, then $C_{\mathscr T}$ is unitarily equivalent to the classical Ces\'aro operator $C_{0}$ on the sequence space $\ell^2(\mathbb N).$ We prove that for every narrow rooted directed tree $\mathscr T$, $C_{\mathscr T}$ is bounded, with norm bounded above by twice the width of $\mathscr T.$ When the tree is not narrow, this boundedness result no longer holds. Beyond several spectral properties, assuming $\mathscr T$ is leafless and narrow, we show that $C_{\mathscr T}$ is subnormal if and only if $\mathscr T$ is isomorphic to the rooted directed tree without any branching vertex. In particular, this demonstrates that the verbatim analogue of Kriete-Trutt theorem fails in the context of Ces\'aro operators on rooted directed trees. Nonetheless, under the same hypotheses, $C_{\mathscr T}$ is always a compact perturbation of a subnormal operator.

Wold-type decomposition for left-invertible weighted shifts on a rootless directed tree

Let $S_{\lambdab}$ be a bounded left-invertible weighted shift on a rootless directed tree $\mathcal T=(V, \mathcal E).$ We address the question of when $S_{\lambdab}$ has Wold-type decomposition. We relate this problem to the convergence of the series $\displaystyle {\tiny \sum_{n = 1}^{\infty} \sum_{u \in G_{v, n}\backslash G_{v, n-1}} \Big(\frac{\lambdab^{(n)}(u)}{\lambdab^{(n)}(v)}\Big)^2},$ $v \in V,$ involving the moments $\lambdab^{(n)}$ of $S^*_{\lambdab}$, where $G_{v, n}=\childn{n}{\parentn{n}{v}}.$ The main result of this paper characterizes all bounded left-invertible weighted shifts $S_{\lambdab}$ on $\mathcal T,$ which have Wold-type decomposition.

A transference principle for involution-invariant functional Hilbert spaces

Let $\sigma : \mathbb C^d \rightarrow \mathbb C^d$ be an affine-linear involution such that $J_\sigma = -1$ and let $U, V$ be two domains in $\mathbb C^d.$ Let $\phi : U \rightarrow V$ be a $\sigma$-invariant $2$-proper map such that $J_\phi$ is affine-linear and let $\mathscr H(U)$ be a $\sigma$-invariant reproducing kernel Hilbert space of complex-valued holomorphic functions on $U.$ It is shown that the space $\mathscr H_\phi(V):=\{f \in \mathrm{Hol}(V) : J_\phi \cdot f \circ \phi \in \mathscr H(U)\}$ endowed with the norm $\|f\|_\phi :=\|J_\phi \cdot f \circ \phi\|_{\mathscr H(U)}$ is a reproducing kernel Hilbert space and the linear mapping $\varGamma_\phi$ defined by $ \varGamma_\phi(f) = J_\phi \cdot f \circ \phi,$ $f \in \mathrm{Hol}(V),$ is a unitary from $\mathscr H_\phi(V)$ onto $\{f \in \mathscr H(U) : f = -f \circ \sigma\}.$ Moreover, a neat formula for the reproducing kernel $\kappa_{\phi}$ of $\mathscr H_\phi(V)$ in terms of the reproducing kernel of $\mathscr H(U)$ is given. The above scheme is applicable to symmetrized bidisc, tetrablock, $d$-dimensional fat Hartogs triangle and $d$-dimensional egg domain. Although some of these are known, this allows us to obtain an analog of von Neumann's inequality for contractive tuples naturally associated with these domains.

Helson matrices induced by measures

We discuss the boundedness, Schatten-class properties and scattering theory of Helson matrices. We also discuss a class of Helson matrices induced by positive and signed measures. All the results of this paper are illustrated with several examples not considered earlier.

Dirichlet-type spaces of the bidisc and Toral $2$-isometries

We introduce and study Dirichlet-type spaces $\mathcal D(\mu_1, \mu_2)$ of the unit bidisc $\mathbb D^2,$ where $\mu_1, \mu_2$ are finite positive Borel measures on the unit circle. We show that the coordinate functions $z_1$ and $z_2$ are multipliers for $\mathcal D(\mu_1, \mu_2)$ and the complex polynomials are dense in $\mathcal D(\mu_1, \mu_2).$ Further, we obtain the division property and solve Gleason's problem for $\mathcal D(\mu_1, \mu_2)$ over a bidisc centered at the origin. In particular, we show that the commuting pair $\mathscr M_z$ of the multiplication operators $\mathscr M_{z_1},$ $\mathscr M_{z_2}$ on $\mathcal D(\mu_1, \mu_2)$ defines a cyclic toral $2$-isometry and $\mathscr M^*_z$ belongs to the Cowen-Douglas class ${\bf B}_1(\mathbb D^2_r)$ for some $r >0.$ Moreover, we formulate a notion of wandering subspace for commuting tuples and use it to obtain a bidisc analog of Richter's representation theorem for cyclic analytic $2$-isometries. In particular, we show that a cyclic analytic toral $2$-isometric pair $T$ with cyclic vector $f_0$ is unitarily equivalent to $\mathscr M_z$ on $\mathcal D(\mu_1, \mu_2)$ if and only if $\ker T^*,$ spanned by $f_0,$ is a wandering subspace for $T.$

Convergence of power sequences of B-operators with applications to stability

The B-operators (abbreviation for Brownian-type operators) are upper triangular 2x2 block matrix operators that satisfy certain algebraic constraints. The purpose of this paper is to characterize the weak, the strongand the uniform stability of B-operators, respectively. This is achieved by giving equivalent conditions for the convergence of powers of a B-operator in each of the corresponding topologies. A more subtle characterization is obtained for B-operators with subnormal (2,2) entry. The issue of the strong stability of the adjoint of a B-operator is also discussed.

Lifting Brownian-type operators with subnormal entry

In this paper, we study Brownian-type operators, which are upper triangular $2\times 2$ block matrix operators with entries satisfying some algebraic constraints. We establish a lifting theorem stating that any Brownian-type operator with subnormal $(2,2)$ entry lifts to a Brownian-type operator with normal $(2,2)$ entry, where lifting is understood in the sense of extending entries of the block matrices representing the operators in question. The spectral inclusion and the filling in holes theorems are obtained for such operators.

Bi-isometries reducing the hyper-ranges of the coordinates

Let $(S_1, S_2)$ be a bi-isometry, that is, a pair of commuting isometries $S_1$ and $S_2$ on a complex Hilbert space $\mathscr H.$ By the von Neumann-Wold decomposition, the hyper-range $\mathscr H_\infty(S_1):=\cap_{n=0}^\infty S^n_1\mathscr H$ of $S_1$ reduces $S_1$ to a unitary operator. Although $\mathscr H_\infty(S_1)$ is an invariant subspace for $S_2,$ in general, $\mathscr H_\infty(S_1)$ is not a reducing subspace for $S_2.$ We show that $\mathscr H_\infty(S_1)$ reduces $S_2$ to an isometry if and only if the subspaces $S_2(\ker S^*_1)$ and $\mathscr H_\infty(S_1)$ of $\mathscr H$ are orthogonal. Further, we describe all bi-isometries $(S_1, S_2)$ satisfying the orthogonality condition mentioned above.

Operator theory on generalized Hartogs triangles

We consider the family $\mathcal P$ of $n$-tuples $P$ consisting of polynomials $P_1, \ldots, P_n$ with nonnegative coefficients which satisfy $\partial_i P_j(0) = \delta_{i, j},$ $i, j=1, \ldots, n.$ With any such $P,$ we associate a Reinhardt domain $\triangle^{\!n}_{_P}$ that we will call the generalized Hartogs triangle. We are particularly interested in the choices $P_a = (P_{1, a}, \ldots, P_{n, a}),$ $a \geq 0,$ where $P_{j, a}(z) = z_j + a \prod_{k=1}^n z_k,~ j=1, \ldots, n.$ The generalized Hartogs triangle associated with $P_a$ is given by \begin{equation} \triangle^{\!n}_a = \Big\{z \in \mathbb C \times \mathbb C^{n-1}_* : |z_j|^2 < |z_{j+1}|^2(1-a|z_1|^2), ~j=1, \ldots, n-1, |z_n|^2 + a|z_1|^2 < 1\Big\}. \end{equation} The domain $\triangle^{\!n}_{_P},$ $n \geq 2$ is never polynomially convex. However, $\triangle^{\!n}_{_P}$ is always holomorphically convex. With any $P \in \mathcal P$ and $m \in \mathbb N^n,$ we associate a positive semi-definite kernel $\mathscr K_{_{P, m}}$ on $\triangle^{\!n}_{_P}.$ This combined with the Moore's theorem yields a reproducing kernel Hilbert space $\mathscr H^2_m(\triangle^{\!n}_{_P})$ of holomorphic functions on $\triangle^{\!n}_{_P}.$ We study the space $\mathscr H^2_m(\triangle^{\!n}_{_P})$ and the multiplication $n$-tuple $\mathscr M_z$ acting on $\mathscr H^2_m(\triangle^{\!n}_{_P}).$ It turns out that $\mathscr M_z$ is never rationally cyclic. Although the dimension of the joint kernel of $\mathscr M^*_z-\lambda$ is constant of value $1$ for every $\lambda \in \triangle^{\!n}_{_P}$, it has jump discontinuity at the serious singularity $0$ of the boundary of $\triangle^{\!n}_{_P}$ with value equal to $\infty.$ We capitalize on the notion of joint subnormality to define a Hardy space on $\triangle^{\!n}_{_0}.$ This in turn gives an analog of the von Neumann's inequality for $\triangle^{\!n}_{_0}.$

Joint complete monotonicity of rational functions in two variables and toral $m$-isometric pairs

We discuss the problem of classifying polynomials $p : \mathbb R^2_+ \rightarrow (0, \infty)$ for which $\frac{1}{p}=\{\frac{1}{p(m, n)}\}_{m, n \geq 0}$ is joint completely monotone, where $p$ is a linear polynomial in $y.$ We show that if $p(x, y)=a+b x+c y+d xy$ with $a > 0$ and $b, c, d \geq 0,$ then $\frac{1}{p}$ is joint completely monotone if and only if $a d - b c \leq 0.$ We also present an application to the Cauchy dual subnormality problem for toral $3$-isometric weighted $2$-shifts.

Analyticity, rank one perturbations and the invariance of the left spectrum

We address the question of the analyticity of a rank one perturbation of an analytic operator. If $\mathscr M_z$ is the bounded operator of multiplication by $z$ on a functional Hilbert space $\mathscr H_\kappa$ and $f \in \mathscr H$ with $f(0)=0,$ then $\mathscr M_z + f \otimes 1$ is always analytic. If $f(0) \neq 0,$ then the analyticity of $\mathscr M_z + f \otimes 1$ is characterized in terms of the membership to $\mathscr H_\kappa$ of the formal power series obtained by multiplying $f(z)$ by $\frac{1}{f(0)-z}.$ As an application, we discuss the problem of the invariance of the left spectrum under rank one perturbation. In particular, we show that the left spectrum $\sigma_l(T + f \otimes g)$ of the rank one perturbation $T + f \otimes g,$ $\,g \in \ker(T^*),$ of a cyclic analytic left invertible bounded linear operator $T$ coincides with the left spectrum of $T$ except the point $\inp{f}{g}.$ In general, the point $\inp{f}{g}$ may or may not belong to $\sigma_l(T + f \otimes g).$ However, if it belongs to $\sigma_l(T + f \otimes g) \backslash \{0\},$ then it is a simple eigenvalue of $T + f \otimes g.$

Weakly concave operators

We study a class of left-invertible operators which we call weakly concave operators. It includes the class of concave operators and some subclasses of expansive strict $m$-isometries with $m > 2$. We prove a Wold-type decomposition for weakly concave operators. We also obtain a Berger-Shaw-type theorem for analytic finitely cyclic weakly concave operators. The proofs of these results rely heavily on a spectral dichotomy for left-invertible operators. It provides a fairly close relationship, written in terms of the reciprocal automorphism of the Riemann sphere, between the spectra of a left-invertible operator and any of its left inverses. We further place the class of weakly concave operators, as the term $\mathcal A_1$, in the chain $\mathcal A_0 \subseteq \mathcal A_1 \subseteq \ldots \subseteq \mathcal A_{\infty}$ of collections of left-invertible operators. We show that most of the aforementioned results can be proved for members of these classes. Subtleties arise depending on whether the index $k$ of the class $\mathcal A_k$ is finite or not. In particular, a Berger-Shaw-type theorem fails to be true for members of~$\mathcal A_{\infty}$. This discrepancy is better revealed in the context of $C^*$- and $W^*$-algebras.

Quasi-Invariance of the Dirichlet series kernels, Analytic symbols and Homogeneous operators

For a scalar matrix $\mathbf a=(a_{m, n})_{m, n=1}^{\infty},$ the Dirichlet series kernel $\kappa_{\mathbf a}$ is the double Dirichlet series $\kappa_{\mathbf a}(s, u) = \sum_{m, n =1}^{\infty} a_{m, n}m^{-s} n^{-\bar{u}}$ in the variables $s$ and $\bar{u},$ which is regularly convergent on some right half-plane $\mathbb H_\rho.$ The analytic symbols $A_{n, \mathbf a} = \sum_{m=1}^{\infty}a_{m, n}m^{-s},$ $n \geq 1$ play a central role in the study of the reproducing kernel Hilbert space $\mathscr H_{\mathbf a}$ associated with the positive semi-definite kernel $\kappa_{\mathbf a}.$ In particular, they form a total subset of $\mathscr H_{\mathbf a}$ and provide the formula $\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}\langle f, A_{n, \mathbf a} \rangle n^{-s},$ $s \in \mathbb H_\rho,$ for $f \in \mathscr H_{\mathbf a}.$ We combine the basic theory of Dirichlet series kernels with the Gelfond-Schneider theorem (Hilbert's seventh problem) to show that any quasi-invariant Dirichlet series kernel $\kappa_{\mathbf a}(s, u)$ factors as $f(s)\bar{f(u)}$ for some Dirichlet series $f$ on $\mathbb H_\rho.$ In particular, there is no quasi-invariant Dirichlet series kernel $\kappa_{\mathbf a}$ if the dimension of $\mathscr H_{\mathbf a}$ is bigger than one. This is in strict contrast with the case of the unit disc, where non-factorable quasi-invariant kernels exist in abundance. We further discuss the Dirichlet series kernels $\kappa_{\mathbf a}$ invariant under the group $\mathscr T$ of translation automorphisms of $\mathbb H_\rho$ and construct a family of densely defined $\mathscr T$-homogeneous operators in $\mathscr H_{\mathbf a},$ whose adjoints are defined only at the zero vector.

Dirichlet polynomials and a moment problem

Consider a linear functional $L$ defined on the space $\mathcal D[s]$ of Dirichlet polynomials with real coefficients and the set $\mathcal D_+[s]$ of non-negative elements in $\mathcal D[s].$ An analogue of the Riesz-Haviland theorem in this context asks: What are all $\mathcal D_+[s]$-positive linear functionals $L,$ which are moment functionals? Since the space $\mathcal D[s],$ when considered as a subspace of $C([0, \infty), \mathbb R),$ fails to be an adapted space in the sense of Choquet, the general form of Riesz-Haviland theorem is not applicable in this situation. In an attempt to answer the forgoing question, we arrive at the notion of a moment sequence, which we call the Hausdorff log-moment sequence. Apart from an analogue of the Riesz-Haviland theorem, we show that any Hausdorff log-moment sequence is a linear combination of $\{1, 0, \ldots, \}$ and $\{f(\log(n)\}_{n \geqslant 1}$ for a completely monotone function $f : [0, \infty) \rightarrow [0, \infty).$ Moreover, such an $f$ is uniquely determined by the sequence in question.

The Cauchy dual subnormality problem via de Branges-Rovnyak spaces

The Cauchy dual subnormality problem (for short, CDSP) asks whether the Cauchy dual of a $2$-isometry is subnormal. In this paper, we address this problem for cyclic $2$-isometries. In view of some recent developments in operator theory on function spaces (see \cite{AM, LGR}), one may recast CDSP as the problem of subnormality of the Cauchy dual $\mathscr M'_z$ of the multiplication operator $\mathscr M_z$ acting on a de Branges-Rovnyak space $\mathcal H(B),$ where $B$ is a vector-valued rational function. The main result of this paper characterizes the subnormality of $\mathscr M'_z$ on $\mathcal H(B)$ provided $B$ is a vector-valued rational function with simple poles. As an application, we provide affirmative solution to CDSP for the Dirichlet-type spaces $\mathscr D(\mu)$ associated with measures $\mu$ supported on two antipodal points of the unit circle.

The Cauchy dual subnormality problem for cyclic $2$-isometries

The Cauchy dual subnormality problem asks whether the Cauchy dual operator of a $2$-isometry is subnormal. Recently this problem has been solved in the negative. Here we show that it has a negative solution even in the class of cyclic $2$-isometries.
