Weight decomposition for toroidal abelian fibrations

We study the action of the rational multiplication by $N$ map on the Chow groups of degenerations of principally polarized abelian varieties of torus rank at most one, as well as its interaction with the Fourier transform. As applications, we compute the class of the unit section, prove a generalized weight decomposition of the relative Chow motive of the universal family of such degenerations, and completely determine its tautological ring.

Birational Classification of Orbifold Compactified Jacobians

We study the equivariant orbifold birational classification problem for families of toroidal compactifications of a group $G$ over a toroidal base, in the cases where $G$ is an algebraic torus or a semiabelian scheme. The classification is reduced to the problem of finding the minimal orbifold toroidal compactifications of $G$ in the world of logarithmic geometry, which is shown to be a combinatorial problem. We solve the problem for families of algebraic tori, Jacobians of families of nodal curves, and semiabelian schemes with abelian generic fiber. The general semiabelian case is reduced to an open conjecture. These results generalize and geometrically interpret recent results of Schmitt.

Fourier transforms and Abel-Jacobi theory

We relate Fourier transforms between compactified Jacobians over the moduli space of stable curves to logarithmic Abel-Jacobi theory. As an application, we compute the pushforward of divisor monomials on compactified Jacobians in terms of the twisted double ramification cycle formula.

Tautological projection for cycles on the moduli space of abelian varieties

We define a tautological projection operator for algebraic cycle classes on the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties $\mathcal{A}_g$: every cycle class decomposes canonically as a sum of a tautological and a non-tautological part. The main new result required for the definition of the projection operator is the vanishing of the top Chern class of the Hodge bundle over the boundary $\bar{\mathcal{A}}_g\smallsetminus \mathcal{A}_g$ of any toroidal compactification $\bar{\mathcal{A}}_g$ of the moduli space $\mathcal{A}_g$. We prove the vanishing by a careful study of residues in the boundary geometry. The existence of the projection operator raises many natural questions about cycles on $\mathcal{A}_g$. We calculate the projections of all product cycles $\mathcal{A}_{g_1}\times \ldots \times \mathcal{A}_{g_\ell}$ in terms of Schur determinants, discuss Faber's earlier calculations related to the Torelli locus, and state several open questions. The Appendix contains a conjecture about the projection of the locus of abelian varieties with real multiplication.

Pullbacks of Brill-Noether Classes Under Abel-Jacobi Sections

We prove that the pullbacks of the virtual fundamental classes of the Brill-Noether loci under any Abel-Jacobi section lie in the tautological ring of the moduli space of stable curves. This resolves a conjecture of Pagani, Ricolfi and van Zelm, and is part of a broader program to understand the logarithmic intersection theory of $\Mgn$.

Smooth Compactifications of the Abel-Jacobi Section

For $\theta$ a small generic universal stability condition of degree $0$ and $A$ a vector of integers adding up to $k(2g-2)$, the spaces $\overline{M}_{g,n}^\theta$ resolving the Abel-Jacobi section to the compactified Jacobian Pic^\theta constructed in the work of Abreu-Pacini and Holmes-Molcho-Pandharipande-Pixton-Schmitt are observed to lie inside the space $\textbf{Div}$ of Marcus and Wise, and their pullback to the rubber space of loc. cit to be smooth. This provides smooth and modular blowups $\widetilde{M}_{g,n}^\theta$ of the moduli space of stable curves on which the logarithmic double ramification cycle can be calculated by several methods, old and novel.

A case study of intersections on blowups of the moduli of curves

We explain how logarithmic structures select principal components in an intersection of schemes. These manifest in Chow homology and can be understood using strict transforms under logarithmic blowups. Our motivation comes from Gromov--Witten theory. The \textit{toric contact cycles} in the moduli space of curves parameterize curves that admit a map to a fixed toric variety with prescribed contact orders. We show that they are intersections of virtual strict transforms of double ramification cycles in blowups of the moduli space of curves. We supply a calculation scheme for the virtual strict transforms, and deduce that toric contact cycles lie in the tautological ring of the moduli space of curves. This is a higher dimensional analogue of a result of Faber--Pandharipande. The operational Chow rings of Artin fans play a basic role, and are shown to be isomorphic to rings of piecewise polynomials on associated cone complexes. The ingredients in our analysis are Fulton's blowup formula, Aluffi's formulas for Segre classes of monomial schemes, piecewise polynomials, and degeneration methods. A model calculation in toric intersection theory is treated without logarithmic methods and may be read independently.

Logarithmically Regular Morphisms

We consider the stack $\mathcal{L}og_X$ parametrizing log schemes over a log scheme $X$, and weak and strong properties of log morphisms via $\mathcal{L}og_X$, as defined by Olsson. We give a concrete combinatorial presentation of $\mathcal{L}og_X$, and prove a simple criterion of when weak and strong properties of log morphisms coincide. We then apply this result to the study of logarithmic regularity, derive its main properties, and give a chart criterion analogous to Kato's chart criterion of logarithmic smoothness.

Universal Weak Semistable Reduction

We show that a toroidal morphism can be reduced to a weakly semistable one in a universal way if we allow families to be modified to Deligne-Mumford stacks instead of schemes.

A Theory of Stacky Fans

We study the category of KM fans - a "stacky" generalization of the category of fans considered in toric geometry - and its various realization functors to "geometric" categories. The "purest" such realization takes the form of a functor from KM fans to the 2-category of stacks over the category of fine fans, in the "characteristic-zero-\'etale" topology. In the algebraic setting, over a field of characteristic zero, we have a realization functor from KM fans to (log) Deligne-Mumford stacks. We prove that this realization functor gives rise to an equivalence of categories between (lattice) KM fans and an appropriate category of toric DM stacks. Finally, we have a differential realization functor to the category of (positive) log differentiable spaces. Unlike the other realizations, the differential realization of a stacky fan is an "actual" log differentiable space, not a stack. Our main results are generalizations of "classical" toric geometry, as well as a characterization of "when a map of KM fans is a torsor". The latter is used to explain the relationship between our theory and the "stacky fans" of Geraschenko and Satriano.
