Some closed manifolds that do not fibre over the circle

We construct closed manifolds with vanishing L^2-Betti numbers over every field) which do not virtually fibre over the circle. The class of fundamental groups that occurs is the largest possible, and in many cases the dimension may be taken to be six. We construct aspherical closed manifolds with residually (torsionfree and nilpotent) fundamental groups in all dimensions at least three whose L^2-Betti numbers vanish (over every field) and which do not virtually fibre over the circle. In particular this implies that in Kielak's Theorem about virtually algebraic fibring for RFRS-groups one cannot weaken the condition RFRS to residually (torsionfree and nilpotent.

Quasihomomorphisms to real algebraic groups

A quasihomomorphism is a map that satisfies the homomorphism relation up to bounded error. Fujiwara and Kapovich proved a rigidity result for quasihomomorphisms taking values in discrete groups, showing that all quasihomomorphisms can be built from homomorphisms and sections of bounded central extensions. We study quasihomomorphisms with values in real linear algebraic groups, and prove an analogous rigidity theorem.

Cobordism, spin structures, and profinite completions

Let $M$ and $N$ be smooth closed connected aspherical manifolds with good (in the sense of Serre) fundamental groups $G$ and $H$. We show that if $\widehat G\cong \widehat H$, then $M$ and $N$ are cobordant and the signatures of $M$ and $N$ agree modulo $8$. Moreover, $M$ is spin (resp.spin$^\CC$) if and only if $N$ is spin (resp.spin$^\CC$). We consider some analogous results for compact connected aspherical manifolds.

$L^2$-torsion of automorphisms

We develop the theory of $L^2$-torsion of an automorphism of a group and compute it for every automorphism of a group which is hyperbolic and one-ended relative to a finite collection of virtually polycyclic groups. We also prove a combination formula for the $L^2$-torsion of a group in terms of the $L^2$-torsion of its stabilisers of a sufficiently nice action on a contractible space. We apply it to compute the $L^2$-torsion of a selection of CAT(0) lattices, of many relatively hyperbolic groups and their automorphisms, of higher dimensional graph manifolds, and of handlebody groups.

Free-by-cyclic groups are conjugacy separable

We show that all finitely generated free-by-cyclic groups are conjugacy separable: if a finitely generated group $G$ surjects onto $\mathbb{Z}$ with free kernel, then for every pair of non-conjugate elements $g,h\in G$, there exists a finite quotient $\alpha:G\twoheadrightarrow Q$ such that $\alpha(g)$ is not conjugate to $\alpha(h)$. This resolves Question 19.41 of the Kourovka Notebook. We apply this to prove that the outer automorphism group of a finitely generated free-by-cyclic group is residually finite. Along the way we prove that if the monodromy of a {finitely generated free}-by-cyclic group is polynomially growing, then the double cosets of a cyclic subgroup are separable. Our approach combines vertex fillings in graph-of-groups decompositions, and Dehn fillings in relatively hyperbolic groups, according to the different geometric regimes in free-by-cyclic groups.

Profinite properties of Coxeter groups

We prove a number of results about profinite completions of Coxeter groups. For example we prove Coxeter groups are good in the sense of Serre and that various splittings of Coxeter groups arising from actions on trees are detected by the profinite completion. As an application we prove a number of families of Coxeter groups are profinitely rigid amongst Coxeter groups. We also prove that Gromov-hyperbolic FC type, extra large type, and odd Coxeter groups are almost profinitely rigid amongst Coxeter groups. In the appendix, Sam Fisher and Sam Hughes show that the Atiyah Conjecture holds for all Coxeter groups, and that $\ell^2$-Betti numbers and their positive characteristic analogues are profinite invariants of Coxeter groups and of virtually compact special groups.

Problems on handlebody groups

We survey a number of constructions and open problems related to the handlebody group, with a focus on recent trends in geometric group theory, (co)homological properties, and its relationship to outer automorphism groups of free groups. We also briefly describe how the \emph{cheap $\alpha$-rebuilding property} of Abert, Bergeron, Fraczyk, and Gaboriau can be applied using the disc complex to deduce results about the homology growth of the handlebody group.

Profinite rigidity of K\"ahler groups: Riemann surfaces and subdirect products

This paper establishes strong profinite rigidity results for K\"ahler groups, showing that certain groups are determined within the class of residually finite K\"ahler groups by their profinite completion. Examples include products of surface groups and certain groups with exotic finiteness properties studied earlier by Dimca-Papadima-Suciu and Llosa Isenrich. Consequently, there are aspherical smooth projective varieties that are determined up to homeomorphism by their algebraic fundamental group. The main tool is the following: the holomorphic fibrations of a closed K\"ahler manifold over hyperbolic 2-orbifolds can be recovered from the profinite completion of its fundamental group. We also prove profinite invariance of the BNS invariant.

Non-vanishing unitary cohomology of low-rank integral special linear groups

We construct explicit finite-dimensional orthogonal representations $\pi_N$ of $\operatorname{SL}_{N}(\mathbb{Z})$ for $N \in \{3,4\}$ all of whose invariant vectors are trivial, and such that $H^{N - 1}(\operatorname{SL}_{N}(\mathbb{Z}),\pi_N)$ is non-trivial. This implies that for $N$ as above, the group $\operatorname{SL}_{N}(\mathbb{Z})$ does not have property $(T_{N-1})$ of Bader-Sauer and therefore is not $(N-1)$-Kazhdan in the sense of De Chiffre-Glebsky-Lubotzky-Thom, both being higher versions of Kazhdan's property $T$.

Simple groups and complements of smooth surfaces in simply connected $4$-manifolds

For each integer $n$ we construct an oriented closed simply connected $4$-manifold $X$ admitting a smoothly embedded closed connected surface $\Sigma$ of self-intersection number $n$ such that the complement of the surface has non-trivial fundamental group. This answers a question of Kronheimer in Kirby's 1997 problem list. The proof combines a topological construction with homological properties of simple groups such as Thompson's group $V$ and certain sporadic finite simple groups.

BNSR invariants and $\ell^2$-homology

We prove that if the $n$th $\ell^2$-Betti number of a group is non-zero then its $n$th BNSR invariant over $\mathbb{Q}$ is empty, under suitable finiteness conditions. We apply this to answer questions of Friedl--Vidussi and Llosa Isenrich--Py about aspherical K\"ahler manifolds, to verify some cases of the Singer Conjecture, and to compute certain BNSR invariants of poly-free and poly-surface groups.

Automorphisms of relatively hyperbolic groups and the Farrell--Jones Conjecture

We prove the fibred Farrell--Jones Conjecture (FJC) in $A$-, $K$-, and $L$-theory for a large class of suspensions of relatively hyperbolic groups, as well as for all suspensions of one-ended hyperbolic groups. We deduce two applications: (1) FJC for the automorphism group of a one-ended group hyperbolic relative to virtually polycyclic subgroups; (2) FJC is closed under extensions of FJC groups with kernel in a large class of relatively hyperbolic groups. Along the way we prove a number of results about JSJ decompositions of relatively hyperbolic groups which may be of independent interest.

Higman-Thompson groups and profinite properties of right-angled Coxeter groups

We prove that every right-angled Coxeter group (RACG) is profinitely rigid amongst all Coxeter groups. On the other hand we exhibit RACGs which have infinite profinite genus amongst all finitely generated residually finite groups. We also establish profinite rigidity results for graph products of finite groups. Along the way we prove that the Higman-Thompson groups $V_{n}$ are generated by $4$ involutions, generalising a classical result of Higman for Thompson's group $V$.

Centralisers and the virtually cyclic dimension of $\mathrm{Out}(F_N)$

We prove that the virtually cyclic (geometric) dimension of the finite index congruence subgroup $\mathrm{IA}_N(3)$ of $\mathrm{Out}(F_N)$ is $2N-2$. From this we deduce the virtually cyclic dimension of $\mathrm{Out}(F_N)$ is finite. Along the way we prove L\"uck's property (C) holds for $\mathrm{Out}(F_N)$, we prove that the commensurator of a cyclic subgroup of $\mathrm{IA}_N(3)$ equals its centraliser, we give an $\mathrm{IA}_N(3)$ analogue of various exact sequences arising from reduction systems for mapping class groups, and give a near complete description of centralisers of infinite order elements in $\mathrm{IA}_3(3)$.

Homology growth of polynomially growing mapping tori

We prove that residually finite mapping tori of polynomially growing automorphisms of hyperbolic groups, groups hyperbolic relative to finitely many virtually polycyclic groups, right-angled Artin groups (when the automorphism is untwisted), and right-angled Coxeter groups have the cheap rebuilding property of Abert, Bergeron, Fraczyk, and Gaboriau. In particular, their torsion homology growth vanishes for every Farber sequence in every degree.

A note on asynchronously automatic groups and notions of non-positive curvature

We prove groups acting cocompactly on locally finite trees with hyperbolic vertex stabilisers are asynchronously automatic. Combining this with previous work of the authors, we obtain an example of a group satisfying several non-positive curvature properties (being a $\mathrm{CAT}(0)$ group, an injective group, a hierarchically hyperbolic group, and having quadratic Dehn function) which is asynchronously automatic but not biautomatic.

On profinite rigidity amongst free-by-cyclic groups I: the generic case

We prove that amongst the class of free-by-cyclic groups, Gromov hyperbolicity is an invariant of the profinite completion. We show that whenever $G$ is a free-by-cyclic group with first Betti number equal to one, and $H$ is a free-by-cyclic group which is profinitely isomorphic to $G$, the ranks of the fibres and the characteristic polynomials associated to the monodromies of $G$ and $H$ are equal. We further show that for hyperbolic free-by-cyclic groups with first Betti number equal to one, the stretch factors of the associated monodromy and its inverse is an invariant of the profinite completion. We deduce that irreducible free-by-cyclic groups with first Betti number equal to one are almost profinitely rigid amongst irreducible free-by-cyclic groups. We use this to prove that generic free-by-cyclic groups are almost profinitely rigid amongst free-by-cyclic groups. We also show a similar results for {universal Coxeter}-by-cyclic groups.
