Infinite volume and atoms at the bottom of the spectrum

Let $G$ be a higher rank simple real algebraic group, or more generally, any semisimple real algebraic group with no rank one factors and $X$ the associated Riemannian symmetric space. For any Zariski dense discrete subgroup $\Gamma<G$, we prove that $\operatorname{Vol}(\Gamma\backslash X)=\infty$ if and only if no positive Laplace eigenfunction belongs to $L^2(\Gamma\backslash X)$, or equivalently, the bottom of the $L^2$-spectrum is not an atom of the spectral measure of the negative Laplacian. This contrasts with the rank one situation where the square-integrability of the base eigenfunction is determined by the size of the critical exponent relative to the volume entropy of $X$.

Torus counting and self-joinings of Kleinian groups

For any $d\geq 1$, we obtain counting and equidistribution results for tori with small volume for a class of $d$-dimensional torus packings, invariant under a self-joining $\Gamma_\rho<\prod_{i=1}^d\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{C})$ of a Kleinian group $\Gamma$ formed by a $d$-tuple of convex cocompact representations $\rho=(\rho_1, \cdots, \rho_d)$. More precisely, if $\mathcal P$ is a $\Gamma_\rho$-admissible $d$-dimensional torus packing, then for any bounded subset $E\subset \mathbb{C}^d$ with $\partial E$ contained in a proper real algebraic subvariety, we have $$\lim_{s\to 0} { s^{\delta_{L^1}({\rho}) }} \cdot \#\{T\in \mathcal{P}: \mathrm{Vol} (T)> s,\, T\cap E\neq \emptyset \}= c_{\mathcal P}\cdot \omega_{\rho} (E\cap \Lambda_\rho).$$ Here $0<\delta_{L^1}(\rho)\le 2/\sqrt d$ is the critical exponent of $\Gamma_\rho$ with respect to the $L^1$-metric on the product $\prod_{i=1}^d \mathbb{H}^3$, $\Lambda_\rho\subset (\mathbb{C}\cup\{\infty\})^d$ is the limit set of $\Gamma_\rho$, and $\omega_{\rho}$ is a locally finite Borel measure on $\mathbb{C}^d\cap \Lambda_\rho$ which can be explicitly described. The class of admissible torus packings we consider arises naturally from the Teichm\"{u}ller theory of Kleinian groups. Our work extends previous results of Oh-Shah on circle packings (i.e. one-dimensional torus packings) to $d$-torus packings.

Temperedness of $L^2(\Gamma\backslash G)$ and positive eigenfunctions in higher rank

Let $G=\operatorname{SO}^\circ(n,1) \times \operatorname{SO}^\circ(n,1)$ and $X={\mathbb H}^{n}\times {\mathbb H}^{n}$ for $n\ge 2$. For a pair $(\pi_1, \pi_2)$ of non-elementary convex cocompact representations of a finitely generated group $\Sigma$ into $\operatorname{SO}^\circ(n,1)$, let $\Gamma=(\pi_1\times \pi_2)(\Sigma)$. Denoting the bottom of the $L^2$-spectrum of the negative Laplacian on $\Gamma\backslash X$ by $\lambda_0$, we show: (1) $L^2(\Gamma\backslash G)$ is tempered and $\lambda_0=\frac{1}{2}(n-1)^2$; (2) There exists no positive Laplace eigenfunction in $L^2(\Gamma \backslash X)$. In fact, analogues of (1)-(2) hold for any Anosov subgroup $\Gamma$ in the product of at least two simple algebraic groups of rank one as well as for Hitchin subgroups $\Gamma<\operatorname{PSL}_d(\mathbb R)$, $d\ge 3$. Moreover, if $G$ is a semisimple real algebraic group of rank at least $2$, then (2) holds for any Anosov subgroup $\Gamma$ of $G$.

Uniqueness of conformal measures and local mixing for Anosov groups

In the late seventies, Sullivan showed that for a convex cocompact subgroup $\Gamma$ of $\operatorname{SO}^\circ(n,1)$ with critical exponent $\delta>0$, any $\Gamma$-conformal measure on $\partial \mathbb{H}^n$ of dimension $\delta$ is necessarily supported on the limit set $\Lambda$ and that the conformal measure of dimension $\delta$ exists uniquely. We prove an analogue of this theorem for any Zariski dense Anosov subgroup of a connected semisimple real algebraic group $G$ of rank at most $3$. We also obtain the local mixing for generalized BMS measures on $\Gamma\backslash G$ including Haar measures.

The ABC130 barrel module prototyping programme for the ATLAS strip tracker

For the Phase-II Upgrade of the ATLAS Detector, its Inner Detector, consisting of silicon pixel, silicon strip and transition radiation sub-detectors, will be replaced with an all new 100 % silicon tracker, composed of a pixel tracker at inner radii and a strip tracker at outer radii. The future ATLAS strip tracker will include 11,000 silicon sensor modules in the central region (barrel) and 7,000 modules in the forward region (end-caps), which are foreseen to be constructed over a period of 3.5 years. The construction of each module consists of a series of assembly and quality control steps, which were engineered to be identical for all production sites. In order to develop the tooling and procedures for assembly and testing of these modules, two series of major prototyping programs were conducted: an early program using readout chips designed using a 250 nm fabrication process (ABCN-25) and a subsequent program using a follow-up chip set made using 130 nm processing (ABC130 and HCC130 chips). This second generation of readout chips was used for an extensive prototyping program that produced around 100 barrel-type modules and contributed significantly to the development of the final module layout. This paper gives an overview of the components used in ABC130 barrel modules, their assembly procedure and findings resulting from their tests.

Anosov groups: local mixing, counting, and equidistribution

Let $G$ be a connected semisimple real algebraic group, and $\Gamma<G$ be a Zariski dense Anosov subgroup with respect to a minimal parabolic subgroup. We describe the asymptotic behavior of matrix coefficients $\langle (\exp tv). f_1, f_2\rangle$ in $L^2(\Gamma\backslash G)$ as $t\to \infty$ for any $f_1, f_2\in C_c(\Gamma\backslash G)$ and any vector $v$ in the interior of the limit cone of $\Gamma$. These asymptotics involve higher rank analogues of Burger-Roblin measures which are introduced in this paper. As an application, for any affine symmetric subgroup $H$ of $G$, we obtain a bisector counting result for $\Gamma$-orbits with respect to the corresponding generalized Cartan decomposition of $G$. Moreover, we obtain analogues of the results of Duke-Rudnick-Sarnak and Eskin-McMullen for counting discrete $\Gamma$-orbits in affine symmetric spaces $H\backslash G$.

Alternative glues for the production of ATLAS silicon strip modules for the Phase-II upgrade of the ATLAS Inner Detector

The Phase-II upgrade of the ATLAS detector for the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) includes the replacement of the current Inner Detector with an all-silicon tracker consisting of pixel and strip detectors. The current Phase-II detector layout requires the construction of 20,000 strip detector modules consisting of sensor, circuit boards and readout chips, which are connected mechanically using adhesives. The adhesive between readout chips and circuit board is a silver epoxy glue as was used in the current ATLAS SemiConductor Tracker (SCT). This glue has several disadvantages, which motivated the search for an alternative. This paper presents a study concerning the use of six ultra-violet (UV) cure glues and a glue pad for use in the assembly of silicon strip detector modules for the ATLAS upgrade. Trials were carried out to determine the ease of use, the thermal conduction and shear strength, thermal cycling, radiation hardness, corrosion resistance and shear strength tests. These investigations led to the exclusion of three UV cure glues as well as the glue pad. Three UV cure glues were found to be possible better alternatives. Results from electrical tests of first prototype modules constructed using these glues are presented.

SU(2) lattice gauge theory in 2+1 dimensions: critical couplings from twisted boundary conditions and universality

We present a precision determination of the critical coupling beta_c for the deconfinement transition in pure SU(2) gauge theory in 2+1 dimensions. This is possible from universality, by intersecting the center vortex free energy as a function of the lattice coupling beta with the exactly known value of the interface free energy in the 2D Ising model at criticality. Results for lattices with different numbers of sites N_t along the Euclidean time direction are used to determine how beta varies with temperature for a given N_t around the deconfinement transition.
