The QCD crossover temperature and curvature coefficient from unbiased exponential resummation at physical quark masses in (2+1)-flavor lattice QCD

We present the first application of the unbiased exponential resummation method to the determination of the QCD pseudocritical temperature $T_{\rm pc}$ at vanishing baryon chemical potential $\mu_B$. By reconstructing the finite-density baryon number susceptibility $\chi_2^B$, we define two thermal-derivative observables whose peak positions yield $T_{\rm pc}^T=160.2(4)(3)$ MeV and $T_{\rm pc}^C=158.1(5)(3)$ MeV. We also show that the pseudocritical temperature, $T_{\rm pc}^\chi$ obtained from the peak of the fourth-order baryon number susceptibility $\chi_4^B$ is consistent with these determinations and with previous lattice-QCD results based on Taylor expansions \cite{Bollweg:2022Pade}. Further, we demonstrate that scaling relations \cite{Bollweg:2022fqq} between $\chi_4^B$ and the thermal derivatives of $\chi_2^B$ yield mutually consistent estimates of the leading second order curvature coefficient $\kappa_2^B$ at the corresponding pseudocritical temperatures. A direct analysis of the $\mu_B$ dependence of the pseudocritical temperatures provides an independent but substantially less constrained determination of the curvature, which remains statistically consistent with the scaling-based estimates. These results demonstrate the consistency of unbiased exponential resummation with the expected scaling behavior and establish it as a complementary approach for probing the QCD crossover at small finite baryon density.

Universal and non-universal finite-volume effects in the vicinity of chiral phase transition in (2+1)-flavor QCD

In this proceeding, we discuss the finite-size scaling analysis of the order parameter related to the chiral phase transition in QCD with two massless quarks. We use data obtained in lattice QCD calculations performed with highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ) for a range of light quark masses, $1/240 \leq m_\ell/m_s \leq 1/27$ for different spatial volumes ($N_\sigma$) on Euclidean lattices with temporal extent $N_\tau=8$, satisfying $3\,N_\tau \leq N_\sigma \leq 10\,N_\tau$. We observe that infinite volume extrapolated data for the order parameter agree reasonably well with the expected $O(2)$ scaling behavior even for physical ratios of the light-to-strange quark mass ratio. We quantify deviations from asymptotic scaling and perform a detailed analysis of the influence of finite-size effects in terms of temperature and quark masses at a fixed lattice cutoff. This is crucial for improving the reliability of the infinite-volume extrapolated estimate of the chiral order parameter and for a more precise determination of chiral phase transition temperature from direct Lattice QCD simulations.

Finite-volume analysis and universal scaling signatures near the chiral phase transition in (2+1)-flavor QCD

For quantifying the universal properties of the chiral phase transition in QCD through numerical calculations on a discrete space-time lattice, one needs to perform controlled extrapolations to the continuum and infinite-volume limits followed by an extrapolation to the limit of massless light quarks. We discuss here, the results on the latter two limits at still finite lattice spacings. We use here for chiral symmetry breaking, an improved order parameter free of additive and multiplicative divergences and we analyse its volume and quark mass dependence. Comparing to the expected universal behavior in the chiral limit, we quantify deviations from the universal finite-size scaling behavior as function of the light to strange quark mass ratio.

Towards a parameter-free analysis of the QCD chiral phase transition and its universal critical behavior

To quantify the universal properties of chiral phase transition in (2+1)-flavor QCD, we use an improved, renormalized order parameter for the chiral symmetry breaking. We construct ratios of this divergence-free order parameter from its values for different pairs of light quark masses. From this, we determine in a parameter-independent manner, the chiral phase transition temperature $T_c$ and the associated critical exponent $\delta$ of the universality class. We present first numerical results of these calculations on $N_\tau=8$ lattices, with staggered fermions.

Towards a parameter-free determination of critical exponents and chiral phase transition temperature in QCD

In order to quantify the universal properties of the chiral phase transition in (2+1)-flavor QCD, we make use of an improved, renormalized order parameter for chiral symmetry breaking which is obtained as a suitable difference of the $2$-flavor light quark chiral condensate and its corresponding light quark susceptibility. Having no additive ultraviolet as well as multiplicative logarithmic divergences, we use ratios of this order parameter constructed from its values for two different light quark masses. We show that this facilitates determining in a parameter-independent manner, the chiral phase transition temperature $T_c$ and the associated critical exponent $\delta$ which, for sufficiently small values of the light quark masses, controls the quark mass dependence of the order parameter at $T_c$. We present first results of these calculations from our numerical analysis performed with staggered fermions on $N_\tau=8$ lattices.

Estimates of Lee-Yang zeros and a possible critical point on the pion condensate boundary in the QCD isospin phase diagram using an unbiased exponential resummation on the lattice

Without invoking any cumulant determination at the input level, we present here the first calculations of direct estimates of the Lee-Yang zeros of QCD partition function in (2+1)-flavor QCD. These zeros are obtained in complex isospin chemical potential $\mu_I$ plane using the unbiased exponential resummation formalism on $N_\tau=8$ lattices and with physical quark masses. For different temperatures, we illustrate the stability of the zeros closest to the origin from which, we subsequently procure the radius of convergence estimates. From the temperature-dependence study of the real and imaginary parts of these zeros, we try estimating one of the possible critical points forming the second order pion condensate critical line in the isospin phase diagram. Further, we compare these resummed estimates with the corresponding Mercer-Roberts estimates of the subsequent Taylor series expansions of the first three partition function cumulants. We also outline comparisons between resummed and Taylor series results of these cumulants for real and imaginary values of $\mu_I$ and highlight the behavior of different expansion orders within and beyond the obtained resummed estimates of radius of convergence. We also re-establish that this resummed radius of convergence can efficiently capture the onset of overlap problem for finite real $\mu_I$ simulations.

Exponential Resummation of QCD at finite chemical potential

A comprehensive study of the QCD phase diagram is one of the challenging and open problems in high energy physics. Having significant astrophysical implications, this is also important in constructing the chronological evolution of the universe. With this aim, this thesis describes the behaviour of thermodynamic observables like pressure and number density with changing chemical potential $\mu$, through the method of an unbiased exponential resummation of lower order Taylor series of these observables at a finite $\mu$. We address the problem of biased estimates, which manifest uncontrollably in exponential resummation and which become severe in the domain of large values, higher orders of $\mu$ and also in observables which are higher $\mu$ derivatives of the thermodynamic potential. We show that our new formalism of unbiased exponential resummation can eliminate these biased estimates exactly upto a given order of $\mu$, and can capture important contributions of higher order Taylor series for all our working temperatures starting from hadronic phase to the plasma phase, including the crossover region. We also demonstrate that this new formalism is highly efficient in saving appreciable computational time and storage space for computations.

A Comparative Analysis between Unbiased Exponential Resummation and Taylor Expansion in Finite-Density QCD with a new phasefactor for Isospin

The recently introduced unbiased exponential resummation at finite chemical potential has become an important approach which promises to capture reliably the behaviour of higher order conserved charge cumulants appearing otherwise in the finite-density QCD Taylor series of thermodynamic observables. In this paper, we present a thorough analysis of the estimates of charge cumulants upto eighth order and have compared them using Taylor expansion method and unbiased exponential resummation approach for baryon and isospin chemical potentials. We also subsequently compare the different estimates of the radius of convergence obtained using these two methods and check if the zeros of phasefactor for baryochemical potential can indicate something about these estimated values. We propose a new method of finding a non-trivial phasefactor for isospin chemical potential and we attempt explaining the different estimates of radius of convergence from the zeroes of this newly constructed gauge-ensemble average phasefactor for isospin chemical potential. Lastly, we also illustrate kurtosis plots describing the behaviour of overlap problem in isospin chemical potential and check if it maintains consistency with the appearance of zeros of the newly proposed phasefactor.

QCD equation of state at finite chemical potential from unbiased exponential resummation of the lattice QCD Taylor series

Exponential resummation of the QCD finite-density Taylor series has been recently introduced as an alternative way of resumming the finite-density lattice QCD Taylor series. Unfortunately the usual exponential resummation formula suffers from stochastic bias which must be subtracted before identifying genuine higher-order contributions. In this paper, we present a new way of subtracting the stochastic bias at the level of each individual gauge configuration, up to a certain order of either the Taylor series or the cumulant expansion, by modifying the argument of the exponential. Retaining the exponential form of the resummation allows us to also calculate the phase factor of the fermion determinant on each gauge configuration. We present our results for the excess pressure, number density, and the average phase factor and show that the new results contain less stochastic bias and are in better agreement with the QCD Taylor series compared to the previous exponential resummation.

Determination of Lattice QCD Equation of state at a finite chemical potential

Exponential resummation to all orders in $\mu_B$ is a promising scheme which can capture contributions to all orders in $\mu_B$ by considering only the first few Taylor coefficients in the Taylor expansion of thermodynamic observables in lattice QCD. This approach however, gets affected by biased estimates of $n$-point correlation functions $D_n$ whose effects can significantly hinder probe of finite density QCD. We present an unbiased exponential resummation formalism, which can reproduce the Taylor series up to the desired order in $\mu_B$, besides retaining the original form of the all-order resummation estimate of QCD partition function.

A new way of determining the Lattice QCD equation of state at a finite chemical potential

The Taylor expansion of thermodynamic observables at a finite baryon chemical potential $\mu_B$ is an oft-used method to circumvent the well-known sign problem of Lattice QCD. Owing to the associated difficulty and limitations of precision in calculating these high-ordered Taylor coefficients, it becomes essential to look for various resummation schemes which can mitigate the computational cost, besides providing trustworthy estimates of different thermodynamic observables. Recently, a way to exponentially resum the contribution of the first $N$ charge density correlation functions $D_1,\dots,D_N$ to the Taylor series to all orders in $\mu_B$ was proposed in Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 2, 022001 (2022). Since the correlation functions $D_n$ are calculated stochastically using estimates from different random volume sources, the resummation formulation gets affected by the biased estimates. These estimates can become very drastic and can radically misdirect the calculations for large values of $N$ and $\mu$ and also for observables which are higher order $\mu$ derivatives of free energy, specially at lower temperatures. In this work, we present a cumulant expansion procedure that allows to investigate and regulate these biased estimates at different orders in $\mu$. We find that the unbiased estimates in the cumulant expansion can truly capture the genuine higher-order stochastic fluctuations of the higher order correlation functions, which got suppressed by the exponential resummation formulation. Finally, we discover an unbiased formalism of the exponential resummation, which when expanded in a series, can exactly reproduce the Taylor series upto a desired power in $\mu$. We are also able to regain the knowledge of reweighting factor and many other important properties of the partition function, which got entirely lost through the implementation of cumulant expansion scheme.

New Way to Resum the Lattice QCD Taylor Series Equation of State at Finite Chemical Potential

Taylor expansion of the thermodynamic potential in powers of the (baryo)chemical potential $\mu_B$ is a well-known method to bypass the Sign Problem of Lattice QCD. Due to the difficulty in calculating the higher order Taylor coefficients, various alternative expansion schemes as well as resummation techniques have been suggested to extend the Taylor series to larger values of $\mu_B$. Recently, a way to resum the contribution of the first $N$ charge density correlation functions $D_1,\dots,D_N$ to the Taylor series to all orders in $\mu_B$ was proposed in Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 2, 022001 (2022). The resummation takes the form of an exponential factor. Since the correlation functions are calculated stochastically, the exponential factor contains a bias which can be significant for large $N$ and $\mu_B$. In this paper, we present a new method to calculate the QCD equation of state based on the well-known cumulant expansion from statistics. By truncating the expansion at a maximum order $M$, we end up with only finite products of the correlation functions which can be evaluated in an unbiased manner. Although our formalism is also applicable for $\mu_B\ne0$, here we present it for the simpler case of a finite isospin chemical potential $\mu_I$ for which there is no Sign Problem. We present and compare results for the pressure and the isospin density obtained using Taylor expansion, exponential resummation and cumulant expansion, and provide evidence that the absence of bias in the latter actually improves the convergence.
