Corrections to the Banks-Casher relation with Wilson quarks

The Banks-Casher relation links the spectral density of the Dirac operator with the existence of a chiral condensate and spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry. This relation receives corrections from a finite value of the quark mass, a finite space-time volume and, if evaluated on a discrete lattice, from the finite value of the lattice spacing a. We present a status report of a determination of these corrections for Wilson quarks.

On the spectral density of the Wilson operator

We summarize our recent determination [1] of the spectral density of the Wilson operator in the p-regime of Wilson chiral perturbation theory. We discuss the range of validity of our formula and a possible extension to our computation in order to better understand the behaviour of the spectral density in a finite volume close to the threshold.

Spectral density of the Hermitean Wilson Dirac operator: a NLO computation in chiral perturbation theory

We compute the lattice spacing corrections to the spectral density of the Hermitean Wilson Dirac operator using Wilson Chiral Perturbation Theory at NLO. We consider a regime where the quark mass $m$ and the lattice spacing $a$ obey the relative power counting $m\sim a \Lambda_{\rm QCD}^2$: in this situation discretisation effects can be treated as perturbation of the continuum behaviour. While this framework fails to describe lattice spectral density close to the threshold, it allows nevertheless to investigate important properties of the spectrum of the Wilson Dirac operator. We discuss the range of validity of our results and the possible implications in understanding the phase diagram of Wilson fermions.

The epsilon regime with twisted mass Wilson fermions

We investigate the leading lattice spacing effects in mesonic two-point correlators computed with twisted mass Wilson fermions in the epsilon-regime. By generalizing the procedure already introduced for the untwisted Wilson chiral effective theory, we extend the continuum chiral epsilon expansion to twisted mass WChPT. We define different regimes, depending on the relative power counting for the quark masses and the lattice spacing. We explicitly compute, for arbitrary twist angle, the leading O(a^2) corrections appearing at NLO in the so-called GSM^* regime. As in untwisted WChPT, we find that in this situation the impact of explicit chiral symmetry breaking due to lattice artefacts is strongly suppressed. Of particular interest is the case of maximal twist, which corresponds to the setup usually adopted in lattice simulations with twisted mass Wilson fermions. The formulae we obtain can be matched to lattice data to extract physical low energy couplings, and to estimate systematic uncertainties coming from discretization errors.

Mixed action computations on fine dynamical lattices

We report on our first experiences in simulating Neuberger valence fermions on CLS $N_f=2$ configurations with light sea quark masses and small lattice spacings. Valence quark masses are considered that allow to explore the matching to (partially quenched) chiral perturbation theory both in the $ε$- and $p$-regimes. The setup is discussed, and first results are presented for spectral observables.

Testing chiral effective theory with quenched lattice QCD

We investigate two-point correlation functions of left-handed currents computed in quenched lattice QCD with the Neuberger-Dirac operator. We consider two lattice spacings a~0.09,0.12 fm and two different lattice extents L~ 1.5, 2.0 fm; quark masses span both the p- and the epsilon-regimes. We compare the results with the predictions of quenched chiral perturbation theory, with the purpose of testing to what extent the effective theory reproduces quenched QCD at low energy. In the p-regime we test volume and quark mass dependence of the pseudoscalar decay constant and mass; in the epsilon-regime, we investigate volume and topology dependence of the correlators. While the leading order behaviour predicted by the effective theory is very well reproduced by the lattice data in the range of parameters that we explored, our numerical data are not precise enough to test next-to-leading order effects.

Exploring Topology Conserving Gauge Actions for Lattice QCD

We explore gauge actions for lattice QCD, which are constructed such that the occurrence of small plaquette values is strongly suppressed. By choosing strong bare gauge couplings we arrive at values for the physical lattice spacings of O(0.1 fm). Such gauge actions tend to confine the Monte Carlo history to a single topological sector. This topological stability facilitates the collection of a large set of configurations in a specific sector, which is profitable for numerical studies in the epsilon-regime. The suppression of small plaquette values is also expected to be favourable for simulations with dynamical quarks. We use a local Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm to simulate such actions, and we present numerical results for the static potential, the physical scale, the topological stability and the kernel condition number of the overlap Dirac operator. In addition we discuss the question of reflection positivity for a class of such gauge actions.

Testing Topology Conserving Gauge Actions for Lattice QCD

We explore gauge actions for lattice QCD, which are constructed such that the occurrence of small plaquette values is strongly suppressed. Such actions originate from the admissibility condition in order to conserve the topological charge. The suppression of small plaquette values is expected to be advantageous for numerical studies in the $\epsilon$-regime and also for simulations with dynamical quarks. Performing simulations at a lattice spacing of about 0.1 fm, we present numerical results for the static potential, the physical scale $r_0$, the stability of the topological charge history, the condition number of the kernel of the overlap operator and the acceptance rate against the step size in the local HMC algorithm.

Lattice Gauge Actions for Fixed Topology

We test a set of lattice gauge actions for QCD that suppress small plaquette values and in this way also suppress transitions between topological sectors. This is well suited for simulations in the epsilon-regime and it is expected to help in numerical simulations with dynamical quarks.

Testing a Topology Conserving Gauge Action in QCD

We study lattice QCD with a gauge action, which suppresses small plaquette values. Thus the MC history is confined to a single topological sector over a significant time, while other observables are decorrelated. This enables the cumulation of statistics with a specific topological charge, which is needed for simulations of QCD in the $ε$-regime. The same action may also be useful for simulations with dynamical quarks. The update is performed with a local HMC algorithm.

SU(3) lattice gauge theory with a mixed fundamental and adjoint plaquette action: Lattice artefacts

We study the four-dimensional SU(3) gauge model with a fundamental and an adjoint plaquette term in the action. We investigate whether corrections to scaling can be reduced by using a negative value of the adjoint coupling. To this end, we have studied the finite temperature phase transition, the static potential and the mass of the 0^{++} glueball. In order to compute these quantities we have implemented variance reduced estimators that have been proposed recently. Corrections to scaling are analysed in dimensionless combinations such as T_c/\sqrtσ and m_{0^{++}}/T_c. We find that indeed the lattice artefacts in e.g. m_{0^{++}}/T_c can be reduced considerably compared with the pure Wilson (fundamental) gauge action at the same lattice spacing.

Thermal operators and cluster topology in q-state Potts Model

We discuss a new class of identities between correlation functions which arise from a local Z_2 invariance of the partition function of the q-state Potts model on general graphs or lattices. Their common feature is to relate the thermal operators of the Potts model to some topological properties of the Fortuin-Kasteleyn clusters. In particular it turns out that any even correlation function can be expressed in terms of observables which probe the linking properties of these clusters. This generalises a class of analogous relations recently found in the Ising model.
