Phase structures in fuzzy geometries

We study phase structures of quantum field theories in fuzzy geometries. Several examples of fuzzy geometries as well as QFT's on such geometries are considered. They are fuzzy spheres and beyond as well as noncommutative deformations of BTZ blackholes. Analysis is done analytically and through simulations. Several features like novel stripe phases as well as spontaneous symmetry breaking avoiding Colemen, Mermin, Wagner theorem are brought out. Also we establish that these phases are stable due to topological obstructions.

Charmonium Production and Corona Effect

We study the centrality dependence to be expected if only charmonium production in the corona survives in high energy nuclear collisions, with full suppression in the hot, deconfined core. To eliminate cold nuclear matter effects as far as possible, we consider the ratio of charmonium to open charm production. The centrality dependence of this ratio is found to follow a universal geometric form, applicable to both RHIC and LHC in collisions at central and forward rapidities.

Phase structure of fuzzy black holes

Noncommutative deformations of the BTZ blackholes are described by noncommutative cylinders. We study the scalar fields in this background. The spectrum is studied analytically and through numerical simulations we establish the existence of novel `stripe phases'. These are different from stripes on Moyal spaces and stable due to topological obstruction.

Topological stability of broken symmetry on fuzzy spheres

We study the spontaneous symmetry breaking of O(3) scalar field on a fuzzy sphere $S_F^2$. We find that the fluctuations in the background of topological configurations are finite. This is in contrast to the fluctuations around a uniform configuration which diverge, due to Mermin-Wagner-Hohenberg-Coleman theorem, leading to the decay of the condensate. Interesting implications of enhanced topological stability of the configurations are pointed out.

Spontaneous symmetry breakdown in fuzzy spheres

We study and analyse the questions regarding breakdown of global symmetry on noncommutative sphere. We demonstrate this by considering a complex scalar field on a fuzzy sphere and isolating Goldstone modes. We discuss the role of nonlocal interactions present in these through geometrical considerations.

Finite temperature phase transition of a single scalar field on a fuzzy sphere

We study finite temperature phase transition of neutral scalar field on a fuzzy sphere using Monte Carlo simulations. We work with the zero mode in the temporal directions, while the effects of the higher modes are taken care by the temperature dependence of r. In the numerical calculations we use "pseudo-heatbath" method which reduces the auto-correlation considerably. Our results agree with the conventional calculations. We report some new results which show the presence of meta-stable states and also suggest that for suitable choice of parameters the symmetry breaking transition is of first order.

Semi-superfluid strings in High Density QCD

We show that topological superfluid strings/vortices with flux tubes exist in the color-flavor locked (CFL) phase of color superconductors. Using a Ginzburg-Landau free energy we find the configurations of these strings. These strings can form during the transition from the normal phase to the CFL phase at the core of very dense stars. We discuss an interesting scenario for a network of strings and its evolution at the core of dense stars.

Heavy Quark Interactions in Finite Temperature QCD

We study the free energy of a heavy quark-antiquark pair in a thermal medium. We constuct a simple ansatz for the free energy for two quark flavors motivated by the Debye-Hückel theory of screening.

Predictions for J/Psi Suppression by Parton Percolation

Parton percolation provides geometric deconfinement in the pre-equilibrium stage of nuclear collisions. The resulting parton condensate can lead to charmonium suppression. We formulate a local percolation condition viable for non-uniform collision environments and show that it correctly reproduces the suppression observed for S-U and Pb-Pb collisions at the SPS. Using this formulation, we then determine the behavior of J/Psi suppression for In-In collisions at the SPS and for Au-Au collisions at RHIC.

Heavy Quark Free Energies and Screening in SU(2) Gauge Theory

We study the properties of the free energy of infinitely heavy quark anti-quark pair in SU(2) gauge theory. By means of lattice Monte Carlo simulations we calculated the free energies in the singlet, triplet and color averaged channels, both in the confinement and in the deconfinement phase. The singlet and triplet free energies are defined in Coulomb gauge which is equivalent to their gauge invariant definitions recently introduced by Philipsen. We analyzed the short and the long distance behavior, making comparisons with the zero temperature case. The temperature dependence of the electric screening mass is carefully investigated. The order of the deconfining transition is manifest in the results near T_c and it allows a reliable test of a recently proposed method to renormalize the Polyakov loop.

Heavy Quark Free Energies and Screening in SU(2) Gauge Theory

We investigate the singlet, triplet and colour average heavy quark free energies in SU(2) pure gauge theory at various temperatures T. We focus on the long distance behaviour of the free energies, studying in particular the temperature dependence of the string tension and the screening masses. The results are qualitatively similar to the SU(3) scenario, except near the critical temperature Tc of the deconfining transition. Finally we test a recently proposed method to renormalize the Polyakov loop.

Parton Percolation and J/Psi Suppression

The geometric clustering of partons in the transverse plane of nuclear collisions leads for increasing A or sqrt(s) to percolation. In the resulting condensate, the partons are deconfined but not yet in thermal equilibrium. We discuss quarkonium dissociation in this precursor of the quark-gluon plasma, with an onset of dissociation when the saturation scale of the parton condensate reaches that of the given quarkonium state.

Non-abelian Topological Strings and Metastable States in Linear Sigma Model

Non-abelian (NA) topological string defects exist in QCD with the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking $U(N_f)_L \times U(N_f)_R \to U(N_f)_V$. Anomaly effects lead to domain walls connected to these strings. In the framework of linear sigma model we find the configuration of these defects. Also we show that in this model metastable CP violating vacuua exist. Strings as well as extended regions of metastable vacuua may form during the chiral transition which could have interesting effects.

Topological String Defect Formation During the Chiral Phase Transition

We extend and generalize the seminal work of Brandenberger, Huang and Zhang on the formation of strings during chiral phase transitions(berger) and discuss the formation of abelian and non-abelian topological strings during such transitions in the early Universe and in the high energy heavy-ion collisions. Chiral symmetry as well as deconfinement are restored in the core of these defects. Formation of a dense network of string defects is likely to play an important role in the dynamics following the chiral phase transition. We speculate that such a network can give rise to non-azimuthal distribution of transverse energy in heavy-ion collisions.

Sequential Quarkonium Suppression

We use recent lattice data on the heavy quark potential in order to determine the dissociation temperatures of different quarkonium states in hot strongly interacting matter. Our analysis shows in particular that certain quarkonium states dissociate below the deconfinement point.

Quarkonium Feed-Down and Sequential Suppression

About 40-50 % of the quarkonium ground states J/psi(1S) and Upsilon(1S) produced in hadronic collisions originate from the decay of higher excitations. In a hot medium, these higher states are dissociated at lower temperatures than the more tightly bound ground states, leading to a sequential suppression pattern. Using new finite temperature lattice results, we specify the in-medium potential between heavy quarks and determine the dissociation points of different quarkonium states. On the basis of recent CDF data on bottomonium production, we then obtain first predictions for sequential Upsilon suppression in nuclear collisions.

String Breaking and Quarkonium Dissociation at Finite Temperatures

Recent lattice studies of string breaking in QCD with dynamical quarks determine the in-medium temperature dependence of the heavy quark potential. Comparing this to the binding energies of different quarkonium states, we check if these can decay into open charm/beauty in a confined hadronic medium. Our studies indicate in particular that the chi_c and the psi dissociate into open charm below the deconfinement point.

Deconfinement Through Chiral Transition In 2 Flavour QCD

We propose that in QCD with dynamical quarks, colour deconfinement occurs when an external field induced by the chiral condensate strongly aligns the Polyakov loop. This effect sets in at the chiral symmetry restoration temperature $T_χ$ and thus makes deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoration coincide. The predicted singular behavior of Polyakov loop susceptibilities at $T_χ$ is shown to be supported by finite temperature lattice calculations.
