Regularized Model Predictive Control via Contractivity and Implicit Lur'e Analysis

This paper develops a contraction-based stability analysis for regularized model predictive control (MPC), whose feedback law is defined implicitly by a finite-horizon optimal control problem with an additional regularizing cost. The proposed approach interprets regularized MPC as an implicit Lur'e system, in which the regularizing cost perturbs the optimality conditions. We develop a multiplier-based contraction framework for implicit Lur'e systems and derive linear matrix inequality conditions for regularized MPC with three broad classes of regularizers: convex smooth stage costs, convex closed proper stage costs, and differentiable regularizers with Lipschitz gradients. Numerical studies on input and state soft penalties, hard input constraints, and sparsity-promoting penalties illustrate that regularization shapes closed-loop performance while retaining formal contraction-based stability guarantees.

Convex Chance-Constrained Stochastic Control under Uncertain Specifications with Application to Learning-Based Hybrid Powertrain Control

This paper presents a strictly convex chance-constrained stochastic control framework that accounts for uncertainty in control specifications such as reference trajectories and operational constraints. By jointly optimizing control inputs and risk allocation under general (possibly non-Gaussian) uncertainties, the proposed method guarantees probabilistic constraint satisfaction while ensuring strict convexity, leading to uniqueness and continuity of the optimal solution. The formulation is further extended to nonlinear model-based control using exactly linearizable models identified through machine learning. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated through model predictive control applied to a hybrid powertrain system.

Modeling and Control of Deep Sign-Definite Dynamics with Application to Hybrid Powertrain Control

Data-driven control increasingly relies on deep models for complex systems whose first-principles models are difficult to obtain. For reliable deployment, however, learned dynamics should respect physical structure and lead to tractable optimal control. We introduce sign constraints, namely sign restrictions on Jacobian entries, as a unified description of monotonicity, positivity, and sign-definiteness. For exactly linearizable deep dynamics, we provide structural conditions and neural-network parameterizations that enforce these constraints by construction. The same structure also allows model predictive control to be formulated as a convex quadratic program or as a convex relaxation, yielding a unique optimizer and a Lipschitz continuous control law. Applications to a three-tank system and a hybrid powertrain demonstrate that the proposed approach offers improved extrapolation performance and smoother control inputs compared with competing nonconvex formulations.

Contractivity Analysis and Control Design for Lur'e Systems: Lipschitz, Incrementally Sector Bounded, and Monotone Nonlinearities

In this paper, we study the contractivity of Lur'e dynamical systems whose nonlinearity is either Lipschitz, incrementally sector bounded, or monotone. We consider both the discrete- and continuous-time settings. In each case, we provide state-independent linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) which are necessary and sufficient for contractivity. Additionally, we provide LMIs for the design of controller gains such that the closed-loop system is contracting. Finally, we provide a numerical example for control design.

Continuation Method for Nonsmooth Model Predictive Control Using Proximal Technique

This paper presents a novel framework for the continuation method of model predictive control based on optimal control problem with a nonsmooth regularizer. Via the proximal operator, the first-order optimality inclusion relation is reformulated into an equation system, to which the continuation method is applicable. In addition, we present constraint qualifications that ensure the well-posedness of the proposed equation system. A numerical example is also presented that demonstrates the effectiveness of our approach.

Contraction Analysis of Continuation Method for Suboptimal Model Predictive Control

This letter analyzes the contraction property of the nonlinear systems controlled by suboptimal model predictive control (MPC) using the continuation method. We propose a contraction metric that reflects the hierarchical dynamics inherent in the continuation method. We derive a pair of matrix inequalities that elucidate the impact of suboptimality on the contraction of the optimally controlled closed-loop system. A numerical example is presented to verify our contraction analysis. Our results are applicable to other MPCs than stabilization, including economic MPC.
