Toroidal-OAM Hybrid Beam for Divergence-Suppressed OAM Wireless Communication

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams offer spatially independent multiplexing in wireless communications, but their donut-shaped intensity diverges with mode order, causing power capture loss at finite apertures and unequal link budgets. We propose a toroidal-OAM hybrid beam that combines the angular confinement and strong longitudinal electric field of toroidal electromagnetic pulses from a coaxial horn with a conventional OAM beam, lowering angular spread and producing non-zero on-axis intensity. A far-field model is built as a weighted superposition of OAM uniform circular array (UCA) radiation, a super-Gaussian toroidal angular envelope, and a zeroth-order Bessel longitudinal field, controlled by three dimensionless parameters (toroidal confinement, coupling strength, longitudinal coefficient) tied to measurable hardware. Numerical results at 3 GHz with a $5λ$ aperture show 12--41% divergence reduction for OAM modes $\ell = 1$--$4$, while modes $\ell \geq 5$ become fully center-peaked. The suppression ratio stays unchanged for fixed $kR$, $κ$, $α$, $β$, and $\ell$. Link evaluation shows 6.4--30.9 dB received SNR gain, over 108% extension in fixed-efficiency link-budget range, and up to five orders of magnitude reduction in multi-mode power imbalance. The central null is filled to 8--100% of the peak; the hybrid beam does not mix OAM modes, with intended-mode power fraction above $0.54$ where the ring is well-defined. OAM mode-division multiplexing capacity at $z=500λ$ shows up to $2.1\times$ ($107\%$) capacity enhancement. Full-wave simulation in ANSYS HFSS corroborates the model, confirming the hybrid launcher preserves the OAM vortex phase while reducing divergence compared with a UCA-only baseline. These findings establish toroidal beam engineering as a practical tool for OAM-based wireless links.

From Interference to Diversity: Mode Coloring and Two-Dimensional Modal-Time Rake Combining for Multipath OAM Communications

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams provide a spatial-multiplexing dimension for wireless communications, but multipath scattering broadens their mode spectrum, so that energy leaks across modes as inter-mode interference (IMI), which conventional OAM demultiplexing discards. This paper treats the leaked modal energy not as interference but as a structured, harvestable resource: it attains up to $LK$-fold asymptotic diversity under independent-branch fading and yields harvested energy under the rank-limited per-tap fading of the operating channel. Each active OAM mode is colored with a distinct time-domain orthogonal spreading code, and a two-dimensional (2D) receiver grid spanning the OAM modes and the resolvable multipath delays jointly combines the despread outputs. The design builds on the Bessel order-difference coupling law of tilted OAM beams, summarized by a Gaussian mode-diffusion model with a mode-coherence metric that quantifies the surviving orthogonality, and on an effective diversity metric that separates the combining gain available at finite signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) from the asymptotic diversity order. At 28~GHz, with a four-mode eight-element uniform circular array (UCA) and four resolvable multipath taps, the proposed 2D modal-time Rake lowers the bit-error rate (BER) by one to three orders of magnitude and saves roughly 10--15~dB of required SNR over mode-wise detection and mode-domain zero-forcing (ZF) and minimum mean-square error (MMSE) detection, and it also outperforms an uncolored modal-time MMSE equalizer; the advantage survives the spectral-efficiency cost of spreading as well as channel-estimation and timing imperfections.

Capacity Analysis on OAM-Based Wireless Communications: An Electromagnetic Information Theory Perspective

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) technology enhances the spectrum and energy efficiency of wireless communications by enabling multiplexing over different OAM modes. However, classical information theory, which relies on scalar models and far-field approximations, cannot fully capture the unique characteristics of OAM-based systems, such as their complex electromagnetic field distributions and near-field behaviors. To address these limitations, this paper analyzes OAM-based wireless communications from an electromagnetic information theory (EIT) perspective, integrating electromagnetic theory with classical information theory. EIT accounts for the physical properties of electromagnetic waves, offering advantages such as improved signal manipulation and better performance in real-world conditions. Given these benefits, EIT is more suitable for analyzing OAM-based wireless communication systems. Presenting a typical OAM model utilizing uniform circular arrays (UCAs), this paper derives the channel capacity based on the induced electric fields by using Green's function. Numerical and simulation results validate the channel capacity enhancement via exploration under EIT framework. Additionally, this paper evaluates the impact of various parameters on the channel capacity. These findings provide new insights for understanding and optimizing OAM-based wireless communications systems.

A New Channel Model for OAM Wireless Communication at 5.8 and 28 GHz

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) in electromagnetic (EM) waves can significantly enhance spectrum efficiency in wireless communications without requiring additional power, time, or frequency resources. Different OAM modes in EM waves create orthogonal channels, thereby improving spectrum efficiency. Additionally, OAM waves can more easily maintain orthogonality in line-of-sight (LOS) transmissions, offering an advantage over multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) technology in LOS scenarios. However, challenges such as divergence and crosstalk hinder OAM's efficiency. Additionally, channel modeling for OAM transmissions is still limited. A reliable channel model with balanced accuracy and complexity is essential for further system analysis. In this paper, we present a quasi-deterministic channel model for OAM channels in the 5.8 GHz and 28 GHz bands based on measurement data. Accurate measurement, especially at high frequencies like millimeter bands, requires synchronized RF channels to maintain phase coherence and purity, which is a major challenge for OAM channel measurement. To address this, we developed an 8-channel OAM generation device at 28 GHz to ensure beam integrity. By measuring and modeling OAM channels at 5.8 GHz and 28 GHz with a modified 3D geometric-based stochastic model (GBSM), this study provides insights into OAM channel characteristics, aiding simulation-based analysis and system optimization.

Joint Reflection and Power Splitting Optimization for RIS-assisted OAM-SWIPT

Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) can enhance the spectrum and power efficiencies of wireless communications networks. Line-of-sight (LOS) transmission is a typical SWIPT scenario. However, the strong channel correlation limits the spectrum and energy efficiencies of SWIPT in the LOS channel. Due to the orthogonal wavefronts, orbital angular momentum (OAM) waves can facilitate the SWIPT in LOS channels. With the assistance of the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), both the energy efficiency and capacity can be further improved for the OAM-SWIPT systems. In this paper, we model the RIS-assisted OAM-SWIPT transmission and derive the optimal reflection coefficients and power splitting ratio for it. We first give the system and channel models. Then, we propose the transmission scheme. Based on the transmission scheme, we formulate the capacity and energy harvesting (EH) trade-off problem. We solve the problem by developing an alternating optimization algorithm. Simulations validate the capacity and EH enhancements brought by the RIS for OAM-SWIPT.

Fractal OAM Generation and Detection Schemes

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) carried electromagnetic waves have the potential to improve spectrum efficiency in optical and radio-frequency communications due to the orthogonal wavefronts of different OAM modes. However, OAM beams are vortically hollow and divergent, which significantly decreases the capacity of OAM transmissions. In addition, unaligned transceivers in OAM transmissions can result in a high bit error rate (BER). The Talbot effect is a self-imaging phenomenon that can be used to generate optical or radio-frequency OAM beams with periodic repeating structures at multiples of a certain distance along the propagation direction. These periodic structures make it unnecessary for the transceiver antennas to be perfectly aligned and can also alleviate the hollow divergence of OAM beams. In this paper, we propose Talbot-effect-based fractal OAM generation and detection schemes using a uniform circular array (UCA) to significantly improve capacity and BER performance in unaligned OAM transmissions. We first provide a brief overview of fractal OAM. Then, we propose the fractal OAM beam generation and detection schemes. Numerical analysis and simulations verify the effectiveness of our proposed fractal OAM generation scheme and also demonstrate improved capacity and BER performance compared to normal OAM transmissions. We also analyze how the receive UCA radius and the distance between the UCAs impact the capacity and BER performances.

OAM-SWIPT for IoE-Driven 6G

Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT), which achieves both wireless energy transfer (WET) and information transfer, is an attractive technique for future Internet of Everything (IoE) in the sixth-generation (6G) mobile communications. With SWIPT, battery-less IoE devices can be powered while communicating with other devices. Line-of-sight (LOS) RF transmission and near-field inductive coupling based transmission are typical SWIPT scenarios, which are both LOS channels and without enough degree of freedom for high spectrum efficiency as well as high energy efficiency. Due to the orthogonal wavefronts, orbital angular momentum (OAM) can facilitate the SWIPT in LOS channels. In this article, we introduce the OAM-based SWIPT as well as discuss some basic advantages and challenges for it. After introducing the OAM-based SWIPT for IoE, we first propose an OAM-based SWIPT system model with the OAM-modes assisted dynamic power splitting (DPS). Then, four basic advantages regarding the OAM-based SWIPT are reviewed with some numerical analyses for further demonstrating the advantages. Next, four challenges regarding integrating OAM into SWIPT and possible solutions are discussed. OAM technology provides multiple orthogonal streams to increase both spectrum and energy efficiencies for SWIPT, thus creating many opportunities for future WET and SWIPT researches.

Modeling and Performance Analysis of OAM-NFC Systems

Due to its low energy consumption and simplicity, near field communication (NFC) has been extensively used in various short-range transmission scenarios, for example, proximity payment and NFC entrance guard. However, the low data rate of NFC limits its application in high rate demanded scenarios, such as high-resolution fingerprint identification and streaming media transmission as well as the future promising high rate indoor communications among pads, phones, and laptops. In this paper, we model and analyze the performance of the orbital angular momentum based NFC (OAM-NFC) system, which can significantly increase the capacity of NFC. We first give the OAM system model. With coils circularly equipped at the transmitter and receiver, OAM-NFC signals can be transmitted, received, and detected. Then, we develop the OAM-NFC generation and detection schemes for NFC multiplexing transmission. We also analyze the OAM-NFC channel capacity and compare it with those of single-input-single-output (SISO) as well as multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) NFC. Simulation results validate the feasibility and capacity enhancement of our proposed OAM-NFC system. How different variables, such as the transceiver misalignment, the numbers of transceiver coils, and transceiver distance, impact the OAM-NFC capacity are also analyzed.
