Magnetoelectric Phase Transition and Axion Dynamics

Magnetoelectric phase transitions have been experimentally studied, but no macroscopic theory has been proposed to explain their dynamical origin. In this work, we assume that the axion quasiparticle with frequency undergoes a condensation like process. We show that these magnetoelectric phase transitions can be described within a Ginzbur Landau framework by introducing a coupled dynamic parameter, the axion angle, which is proportional to the magnetoelectric coeffcient. We derive relations between the static axion angle, the axion frequency, and the phase transition temperature for different magnetoelectric materials, respectively, and compare these calculations with existing experimental results. We also connect the artificially designed Dzyaloshinskii Moriya interaction with the axion condensate like process, so that the relation between the static axion angle and the experimentally measured frequency shift can be obtained.

Decoupling Policy Extraction for Offline Reinforcement Learning

Offline RL methods commonly jointly train the actor and critic, where the critic is used to guide the actor toward higher-value actions. This coupled learning process is well motivated in online RL, where an improved actor collects new data that can further update the actor and the critic. However, training data remains fixed in offline RL, making actor-side policy improvement unable to generate new data to validate or correct the critic. Moreover, retaining this coupled paradigm leads to two related challenges. Firstly, actor updates can drift toward high-valued but potentially out-of-distribution (OOD) actions and amplify critic overestimation. Secondly, conservative value estimation or behavior-cloning regularization creates a difficult trade-off between suppressing OOD actions and selecting high-value actions within the data-supported region. Motivated by this observation, we revisit the conventional offline RL paradigm and propose decoupling policy improvement from actor training. Specifically, we train the actor solely to model the behavior distribution and perform policy improvement at inference time by reranking multiple actor-generated proposals with a separately learned critic. We refer to this paradigm as the decoupled policy extraction paradigm. Under such paradigm, the actor provides behavior-supported action candidates, while the critic performs value-based selection within this candidate set. Extensive experiments show that the decoupled policy extraction paradigm outperforms both behavior cloning and jointly learned offline RL methods, while remaining effective even with a naive Q-learning critic.

Axion Dark Matter Modulated Spin Wave Interferometry

We propose a novel asymmetric spin wave interferometer to detect ultralight axion dark matter. The axion modulates spin-wave properties via a weak effective magnetic field in ferromagnets. The interferometer splits a spin-wave source into two paths of different lengths and sets them to interfere destructively. The system then converts the axion-induced phase shift into a measurable magnetization oscillation that can radiate electromagnetic waves and generate electrical signals via Faraday induction. The signal-to-noise ratios have been evaluated for three detection schemes: the linear amplifier, the single-photon detector, and the electrical signal detection approach, accounting for both magnetization fluctuation and thermal noise. The accessible axion mass range is approximately $10^{-8}$ eV to $10^{-6}$ eV, set by the spin wave propagation length and the relaxation time.

UEREBot: Learning Safe Quadrupedal Locomotion under Unstructured Environments and High-Speed Dynamic Obstacles

Quadruped robots are increasingly deployed in unstructured environments. Safe locomotion in these settings requires long-horizon goal progress, passability over uneven terrain and static constraints, and collision avoidance against high-speed dynamic obstacles. A single system cannot fully satisfy all three objectives simultaneously: planning-based decisions can be too slow, while purely reactive decisions can sacrifice goal progress and passability. To resolve this conflict, we propose UEREBot (Unstructured-Environment Reflexive Evasion Robot), a hierarchical framework that separates slow planning from instantaneous reflexive evasion and coordinates them during execution. UEREBot formulates the task as a constrained optimal control problem blueprint. It adopts a spatial--temporal planner that provides reference guidance toward the goal and threat signals. It then uses a threat-aware handoff to fuse navigation and reflex actions into a nominal command, and a control barrier function shield as a final execution safeguard. We evaluate UEREBot in Isaac Lab simulation and deploy it on a Unitree Go2 quadruped equipped with onboard perception. Across diverse environments with complex static structure and high-speed dynamic obstacles, UEREBot achieves higher avoidance success and more stable locomotion while maintaining goal progress than representative baselines, demonstrating improved safety--progress trade-offs.

Emerging axion detection in artificial magnetoelectric materials

Axions are considered a key component of dark matter, characterized by very weak couplings to fermions and Chern-Simons couplings to gauge fields. We propose a novel detection mechanism based on symmetry-breaking magnetoelectric materials with a linear axionic coupling between magnetization and ferroelectric polarization. The focus is on a strain gradient Sr2IrO4 film, where the breaking of space-inversion symmetry results in an emergent polar phase and an out-of-plane magnetic moment, exhibiting a flexomagnetoelectric effect. In this material, the linear P||M enables a direct coupling between the external axion field and the intrinsic axion-like field, which amplifies the weak electromagnetic signals induced by axions, paving the way for pioneering axion detection. In contrast to conventional detection techniques, this mechanism is expected to enhance the sensitivity of the axion-electron and axion-photon coupling, providing a novel platform for axion detection and advancing the study of dark matter through the magnetoelectric effect.
