Understanding and Improving UMAP with Geometric and Topological Priors: The JORC-UMAP Algorithm

Nonlinear dimensionality reduction techniques, particularly UMAP, are widely used for visualizing high-dimensional data. However, UMAP's local Euclidean distance assumption often fails to capture intrinsic manifold geometry, leading to topological tearing and structural collapse. We identify UMAP's sensitivity to the k-nearest neighbor graph as a key cause. To address this, we introduce Ollivier-Ricci curvature as a geometric prior, reinforcing edges at geometric bottlenecks and reducing redundant links. Since curvature estimation is noise-sensitive, we also incorporate a topological prior using Jaccard similarity to ensure neighborhood consistency. The resulting method, JORC-UMAP, better distinguishes true manifold structure from spurious connections. Experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets show that JORC-UMAP reduces tearing and collapse more effectively than standard UMAP and other DR methods, as measured by SVM accuracy and triplet preservation scores, while maintaining computational efficiency. This work offers a geometry-aware enhancement to UMAP for more faithful data visualization.

Asymptotic behavior of the generalized Derrida-Retaux recursive model

We study the max-type recursive model introduced by Hu and Shi (J. Stat. Phys., 2018), which generalizes the model of Derrida and Retaux (J. Stat. Phys., 2014). The class of geometric-type marginal distributions is preserved by the model with a geometric offspring distribution. We give some long-time asymptotic expansions of the parameters of the marginal distribution. From the expansions, we derive the asymptotics of the sustainability probability, marginal distribution, first moment and probability generating function.

Derrida-Retaux type models and related scaling limit theorems

We give characterizations of the transition semigroup and generator of a continuous-time Derrida--Retaux type process that generalizes the one introduced by Hu, Mallein and Pain (Commun. Math. Phys., 2020). It is shown that the process arises naturally as the scaling limit of the discrete-time max-type recursive models introduced by Hu and Shi (J. Stat. Phys., 2018).

Characterizing EOSIO Blockchain

EOSIO has become one of the most popular blockchain platforms since its mainnet launch in June 2018. In contrast to the traditional PoW-based systems (e.g., Bitcoin and Ethereum), which are limited by low throughput, EOSIO is the first high throughput Delegated Proof of Stake system that has been widely adopted by many applications. Although EOSIO has millions of accounts and billions of transactions, little is known about its ecosystem, especially related to security and fraud. In this paper, we perform a large-scale measurement study of the EOSIO blockchain and its associated DApps. We gather a large-scale dataset of EOSIO and characterize activities including money transfers, account creation and contract invocation. Using our insights, we then develop techniques to automatically detect bots and fraudulent activity. We discover thousands of bot accounts (over 30\% of the accounts in the platform) and a number of real-world attacks (301 attack accounts). By the time of our study, 80 attack accounts we identified have been confirmed by DApp teams, causing 828,824 EOS tokens losses (roughly 2.6 million US\$) in total.
