Security-Aware Pinching-Antenna Systems (PASS): Physical-Layer Security Transmission

This paper investigates heterogeneous secure multi-user transmission in pinching-antenna systems (PASS), where dynamically adjustable pinching antennas reshape both guided-wave and free-space propagation to improve communication and confidentiality performance. Unlike conventional physical-layer security designs that represent different security requirements merely through weights or thresholds, heterogeneous services may change the logical role of each receiver for each information stream. To address this issue, we establish a unified role-dependent PASS transmission framework comprising low-, medium-, and high-security modes. These modes respectively maximize the minimum legitimate-user rate, protect confidential streams against external eavesdroppers, and further prevent non-target legitimate users from intercepting unauthorized information. The resulting joint optimization of information beamforming, artificial noise, and pinching-antenna positions is formulated as a long-horizon continuous-control problem. Two learning-based controllers are then developed to provide complementary complexity-performance tradeoffs. First, heterogeneous security-aware proximal policy optimization (HSPPO) directly transforms mode-specific rate and secrecy violations into normalized smooth feedback embedded in the proximal-policy-optimization advantage, enabling lightweight and violation-sensitive control. Second, multi-relational hierarchy-aware diffusion policy optimization (MRHA-DPO) combines a PASS-aware multi-relational graph encoder, a graph-conditioned hierarchical velocity network, and exact-inversion DPO training to achieve topology-aware and expressive control. The proposed framework enables a common PASS platform to flexibly support service-dependent confidentiality requirements while balancing online efficiency and control capability.

Beamforming Design for Pinching Antenna Systems Enabled Cognitive Radio Systems

A pinching antenna system (PASS) assisted cognitive radio (CR) system is proposed. A secondary system sum rate maximization problem is formulated by jointly considering the base station (BS) power budget, the pinching antenna (PA) deployment constraints, and the interference tolerance requirements of primary users. To address the resulting non-convex problem, a tractable reformulation based on the weighted minimum mean-square error (WMMSE) approach is adopted, followed by the development of an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm. Within this framework, the auxiliary variables are updated in closed form, enabling an efficient transformation of the digital beamforming subproblem to a convex form, while the PA deployment is refined through a tailored element-wise optimization strategy. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of the proposed design and show consistent performance gains compared with conventional benchmark schemes.

Graph-Enhanced LLM for SWAN-ISAC

Segmented pinching antenna assisted integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems enable flexible spatial resource utilization by allowing different waveguide segments to be dynamically configured for transmission and reception. However, the resulting design requires the joint optimization of antenna deployment, segment partitioning, and beamforming under coupled communication and sensing constraints. In this paper, we propose a general learning framework for segmented pinching antenna assisted ISAC systems. Specifically, a channel state information (CSI)-induced self-graph is constructed to capture the scenario-dependent interactions among communication users and sensing targets. Based on the learned graph representation, a large language model (LLM) backbone with low-rank adaptation (LoRA) is employed, followed by two task-specific output heads for antenna deployment and beamforming prediction, respectively. Simulation results show that the proposed framework achieves a favorable tradeoff between communication rate and sensing accuracy

LLM-enabled Antenna Partitioning and Beamforming Optimization for Segmented Pinching

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) requires spatial architectures that can flexibly balance data transmission and environment sensing. Segmented pinching antenna-assisted ISAC provides such flexibility by allowing different waveguide segments to be dynamically configured for transmission and reception. However, its design involves the joint optimization of antenna deployment, segment partitioning, and beamforming under coupled communication and sensing constraints, which becomes particularly challenging when the numbers of communication users and sensing targets vary across scenarios. To endow the system with stronger adaptability to changing user and target configurations, we propose a general learning framework for segmented pinching antenna-assisted ISAC systems. Specifically, a channel state information (CSI)-induced self-graph is constructed to produce permutation-invariant representations of user-target interactions, and the resulting features are processed by a large language model (LLM) backbone with two task-specific heads for jointly predicting antenna deployment, segment partitioning, and ISAC beamforming. In addition, a user count transfer mechanism is developed to examine whether the learned deployment policy is site-specific and reusable under changed user configurations. Simulation results show that the proposed framework achieves higher communication rates while maintaining reliable sensing accuracy. Moreover, the learned deployment policy remains highly stable when transferring to other user counts, which reduces the training cost from full model retraining to beamforming head adaption.

Waveform Design for Partial-Time Superimposed ISAC Systems

Nowadays, waveforms of integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) are almost based on conventional communication and sensing signal, which bounds both the communication and sensing performance. To deal with this issue, in this paper, a novel waveform design is presented for the partial-time superimposed (PTS) ISAC system. At the base station (BS), a parameter-adjustable linear frequency modulation (LFM) pulse signal and a continuous communication orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal are employed to broadcast public information and perform sensing tasks, respectively, using a PTS scheme. Pulse compression gain enhances the system's long-range sensing capability, while OFDM ensures the system's high-speed data transmission capability. Meanwhile, the LFM signal is utilized as superimposed pilot for channel estimation, which has higher time-frequency resource utilization and stronger real-time performance compared to orthogonal pilots. We present an accurate parameter estimation method of multi-path sensing signal for reconstructing and interference cancellation in communication users. Additionally, a cyclic maximum likelihood method is introduced for channel estimation and the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) of channel estimation is derived. Simulations demonstrate the accuracy and robustness of the proposed parameter estimation algorithm as well as the improved channel estimation performance over traditional methods. The proposed waveform design method can achieve reliable data transmission and accurate target sensing.

RL based Beamforming Optimization for 3D Pinching Antenna assisted ISAC Systems

In this paper, a three-dimensional (3D) deployment scheme of pinching antenna array is proposed, aiming to enhances the performance of integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems. To fully realize the potential of 3D deployment, a joint antenna positioning, time allocation and transmit power optimization problem is formulated to maximize the sum communication rate with the constraints of target sensing rates and system energy. To solve the sum rate maximization problem, we propose a heterogeneous graph neural network based reinforcement learning (HGRL) algorithm. Simulation results prove that 3D deployment of pinching antenna array outperforms 1D and 2D counterparts in ISAC systems. Moreover, the proposed HGRL algorithm surpasses other baselines in both performance and convergence speed due to the advanced observation construction of the environment.

Integrated Sensing and Communication for Segmented Waveguide-Enabled Pinching Antenna Systems

In this paper, an integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) design for segmented waveguide-enabled pinching-antenna array (SWAN) systems is proposed to improve the performance of systems by leveraging the low in-waveguide propagation loss of segmented waveguides. The hybrid segment selection and multiplexing (HSSM) protocol is implemented to provide favorable performance with less hardware cost. To achieve this, a joint transmit beamforming optimization, segment selection, and pinching antenna positioning problem is formulated to maximize the sum communication rate with the constraints of sensing performance. To solve the maximization problem, we propose a segment hysteresis based reinforcement learning (SHRL) algorithm to learn segment selection and pinching antenna positions in different progress to explore better strategies. Simulation results demonstrate that 1) the proposed SWAN-ISAC scheme outperforms the other baseline schemes, and 2) the proposed HARL algorithm achieves better performance compared to conventional RL algorithms.

Deep Learning based Three-stage Solution for ISAC Beamforming Optimization

In this paper, a general ISAC system where the base station (BS) communicates with multiple users and performs target detection is considered. Then, a sum communication rate maximization problem is formulated, subjected to the constraints of transmit power and the minimum sensing rates of users. To solve this problem, we develop a framework that leverages deep learning algorithms to provide a three-stage solution for ISAC beamforming. The three-stage beamforming optimization solution includes three modules: 1) an unsupervised learning based feature extraction algorithm is proposed to extract fixed-size latent features while keeping its essential information from the variable channel state information (CSI); 2) a reinforcement learning (RL) based beampattern optimization algorithm is proposed to search the desired beampattern according to the extracted features; 3) a supervised learning based beamforming reconstruction algorithm is proposed to reconstruct the beamforming vector from beampattern given by the RL agent. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed three-stage solution outperforms the baseline RL algorithm by optimizing the intuitional beampattern rather than beamforming.

PASS-Enhanced MEC: Joint Optimization of Task Offloading and Uplink PASS Beamforming

A pinching-antenna system (PASS)-enhanced mobile edge computing (MEC) architecture is investigated to improve the task offloading efficiency and latency performance in dynamic wireless environments. By leveraging dielectric waveguides and flexibly adjustable pinching antennas, PASS establishes short-distance line-of-sight (LoS) links while effectively mitigating the significant path loss and potential signal blockage, making it a promising solution for high-frequency MEC systems. We formulate a network latency minimization problem to joint optimize uplink PASS beamforming and task offloading. The resulting problem is modeled as a Markov decision process (MDP) and solved via the deep reinforcement learning (DRL) method. To address the instability introduced by the $\max$ operator in the objective function, we propose a load balancing-aware proximal policy optimization (LBPPO) algorithm. LBPPO incorporates both node-level and waveguide-level load balancing information into the policy design, maintaining computational and transmission delay equilibrium, respectively. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed PASS-enhanced MEC with adaptive uplink PASS beamforming exhibit stronger convergence capability than fixed-PA baselines and conventional MIMO-assisted MEC, especially in scenarios with a large number of UEs or high transmit power.

CRB minimization for PASS Assisted ISAC

A multiple waveguide PASS assisted integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system is proposed, where the base station (BS) is equipped with transmitting pinching antennas (PAs) and receiving uniform linear array (ULA) antennas. The PASS-transmitting-ULA-receiving (PTUR) BS transmits the communication and sensing signals through the stretched PAs on waveguides and collects the echo sensing signals with the mounted ULA. Based on this configuration, a target sensing Cramer Rao Bound (CRB) minimization problem is formulated under communication quality-of-service (QoS) constraints, power budget constraints, and PA deployment constraints. An alternating optimization (AO) method is employed to address the formulated non-convex optimization problem. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed PASS assisted ISAC framework achieves superior performance over benchmark schemes.

Pinching Antenna Systems for Integrated Sensing and Communications

Recently, the pinching antenna system (PASS) has attracted considerable attention due to their advantages in flexible deployment and reduction of signal propagation loss. In this work, a multiple waveguide PASS assisted integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system is proposed, where the base station (BS) is equipped with transmitting pinching antennas (PAs) and receiving uniform linear array (ULA) antennas. The full-duplex (FD) BS transmits the communication and sensing signals through the PAs on waveguides and collects the echo sensing signals with the mounted ULA. Based on this configuration, a target sensing Cramer Rao Bound (CRB) minimization problem is formulated under communication quality-of-service (QoS) constraints, power budget constraint, and PA deployment constraints. The alternating optimization (AO) method is employed to address the formulated non-convex optimization problem. In each iteration, the overall optimization problem is decomposed into a digital beamforming sub-problem and a pinching beamforming sub-problem. The sensing covariance matrix and communication beamforming matrix at the BS are optimized by solving the digital beamforming sub-problem with semidefinite relaxation (SDR). The PA deployment is updated by solving the pinching beamforming sub-problem with the successive convex approximation (SCA) method, penalty method, and element-wise optimization. Simulation results show that the proposed PASS assisted ISAC framework achieves superior performance over benchmark schemes, is less affected by stringent communication constraints compared to conventional MIMO-ISAC, and benefits further from increasing the number of waveguides and PAs per waveguide.

Intelligent Travel Activity Monitoring: Generalized Distributed Acoustic Sensing Approaches

Obtaining data on active travel activities such as walking, jogging, and cycling is important for refining sustainable transportation systems (STS). Effectively monitoring these activities not only requires sensing solutions to have a joint feature of being accurate, economical, and privacy-preserving, but also enough generalizability to adapt to different climate environments and deployment conditions. In order to provide a generalized sensing solution, a deep learning (DL)-enhanced distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) system for monitoring active travel activities is proposed. By leveraging the ambient vibrations captured by DAS, this scheme infers motion patterns without relying on image-based or wearable devices, thereby addressing privacy concerns. We conduct real-world experiments in two geographically distinct locations and collect comprehensive datasets to evaluate the performance of the proposed system. To address the generalization challenges posed by heterogeneous deployment environments, we propose two solutions according to network availability: 1) an Internet-of-Things (IoT) scheme based on federated learning (FL) is proposed, and it enables geographically different DAS nodes to be trained collaboratively to improve generalizability; 2) an off-line initialization approach enabled by meta-learning is proposed to develop high-generality initialization for DL models and to enable rapid model fine-tuning with limited data samples, facilitating generalization at newly established or isolated DAS nodes. Experimental results of the walking and cycling classification problem demonstrate the performance and generalizability of the proposed DL-enhanced DAS system, paving the way for practical, large-scale DAS monitoring of active travel.

Enabling Distributed Generative Artificial Intelligence in 6G: Mobile Edge Generation

Mobile edge generation (MEG) is an emerging technology that allows the network to meet the challenging traffic load expectations posed by the rise of generative artificial intelligence~(GAI). A novel MEG model is proposed for deploying GAI models on edge servers (ES) and user equipment~(UE) to jointly complete text-to-image generation tasks. In the generation task, the ES and UE will cooperatively generate the image according to the text prompt given by the user. To enable the MEG, a pre-trained latent diffusion model (LDM) is invoked to generate the latent feature, and an edge-inferencing MEG protocol is employed for data transmission exchange between the ES and the UE. A compression coding technique is proposed for compressing the latent features to produce seeds. Based on the above seed-enabled MEG model, an image quality optimization problem with transmit power constraint is formulated. The transmitting power of the seed is dynamically optimized by a deep reinforcement learning agent over the fading channel. The proposed MEG enabled text-to-image generation system is evaluated in terms of image quality and transmission overhead. The numerical results indicate that, compared to the conventional centralized generation-and-downloading scheme, the symbol number of the transmission of MEG is materially reduced. In addition, the proposed compression coding approach can improve the quality of generated images under low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions.

Mobile Edge Generation-Enabled Digital Twin: Architecture Design and Research Opportunities

A novel paradigm of mobile edge generation (MEG)-enabled digital twin (DT) is proposed, which enables distributed on-device generation at mobile edge networks for real-time DT applications. First, an MEG-DT architecture is put forward to decentralize generative artificial intelligence (GAI) models onto edge servers (ESs) and user equipments (UEs), which has the advantages of low latency, privacy preservation, and individual-level customization. Then, various single-user and multi-user generation mechanisms are conceived for MEG-DT, which strike trade-offs between generation latency, hardware costs, and device coordination. Furthermore, to perform efficient distributed generation, two operating protocols are explored for transmitting interpretable and latent features between ESs and UEs, namely sketch-based generation and seed-based generation, respectively. Based on the proposed protocols, the convergence between MEG and DT are highlighted. Considering the seed-based image generation scenario, numerical case studies are provided to reveal the superiority of MEG-DT over centralized generation. Finally, promising applications and research opportunities are identified. Code is available at https://github.com/xiaoxiaxusummer/MEG_DT

AllTheDocks road safety dataset: A cyclist's perspective and experience

Active travel is an essential component in intelligent transportation systems. Cycling, as a form of active travel, shares the road space with motorised traffic which often affects the cyclists' safety and comfort and therefore peoples' propensity to uptake cycling instead of driving. This paper presents a unique dataset, collected by cyclists across London, that includes video footage, accelerometer, GPS, and gyroscope data. The dataset is then labelled by an independent group of London cyclists to rank the safety level of each frame and to identify objects in the cyclist's field of vision that might affect their experience. Furthermore, in this dataset, the quality of the road is measured by the international roughness index of the surface, which indicates the comfort of cycling on the road. The dataset will be made available for open access in the hope of motivating more research in this area to underpin the requirements for cyclists' safety and comfort and encourage more people to replace vehicle travel with cycling.

Mobile Edge Generation: A New Era to 6G

A conception of mobile edge generation (MEG) is proposed, where generative artificial intelligence (GAI) models are distributed at edge servers (ESs) and user equipment (UE), enabling joint execution of generation tasks. Various distributed deployment schemes of the GAI model are proposed to alleviate the immense network load and long user queuing times for accessing GAI models. Two MEG frameworks are proposed, namely the single-ES framework and the multi-ESs framework. 1) A one-to-one joint generation framework between an ES and a UE is proposed, including four specific single-ES MEG protocols. These protocols allow distributed GAI models to transmit seeds or sketches for delivering information efficiently. 2) Several protocols are proposed for multi-ESs MEG, which enable multiple ESs to perform the generation task cooperatively or in parallel. Finally, a case study of a text-guided-image-to-image generation is provided, where a latent diffusion model is distributed at an ES and a UE. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed protocols are able to generate high-quality images at extremely low signal-to-noise ratios. The proposed protocols can significantly reduce the communication overhead compared to the centralized model.

Caching-at-STARS: the Next Generation Edge Caching

A simultaneously transmitting and reflecting surface (STARS) enabled edge caching system is proposed for reducing backhaul traffic and ensuring the quality of service. A novel Caching-at-STARS structure, where a dedicated smart controller and cache memory are installed at the STARS, is proposed to satisfy user demands with fewer hops and desired channel conditions. Then, a joint caching replacement and information-centric hybrid beamforming optimization problem is formulated for minimizing the network power consumption. As long-term decision processes, the optimization problems based on independent and coupled phase-shift models of Caching-at-STARS contain both continuous and discrete decision variables, and are suitable for solving with deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm. For the independent phase-shift Caching-at-STARS model, we develop a frequency-aware based twin delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (FA-TD3) algorithm that leverages user historical request information to serialize high-dimensional caching replacement decision variables. For the coupled phase-shift Caching-at-STARS model, we conceive a cooperative TD3 \& deep-Q network (TD3-DQN) algorithm comprised of FA-TD3 and DQN agents to decide on continuous and discrete variables respectively by observing the network external and internal environment. The numerical results demonstrate that: 1) The Caching-at-STARS-enabled edge caching system has advantages over traditional edge caching, especially in scenarios where Zipf skewness factors or cache capacity is large; 2) Caching-at-STARS outperforms the RIS-assisted edge caching systems; 3) The proposed FA-TD3 and cooperative TD3-DQN algorithms are superior in reducing network power consumption than conventional TD3.

Hybrid Reinforcement Learning for STAR-RISs: A Coupled Phase-Shift Model Based Beamformer

A simultaneous transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) assisted multi-user downlink multiple-input single-output (MISO) communication system is investigated. In contrast to the existing ideal STAR-RIS model assuming an independent transmission and reflection phase-shift control, a practical coupled phase-shift model is considered. Then, a joint active and passive beamforming optimization problem is formulated for minimizing the long-term transmission power consumption, subject to the coupled phase-shift constraint and the minimum data rate constraint. Despite the coupled nature of the phase-shift model, the formulated problem is solved by invoking a hybrid continuous and discrete phase-shift control policy. Inspired by this observation, a pair of hybrid reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms, namely the hybrid deep deterministic policy gradient (hybrid DDPG) algorithm and the joint DDPG & deep-Q network (DDPG-DQN) based algorithm are proposed. The hybrid DDPG algorithm controls the associated high-dimensional continuous and discrete actions by relying on the hybrid action mapping. By contrast, the joint DDPG-DQN algorithm constructs two Markov decision processes (MDPs) relying on an inner and an outer environment, thereby amalgamating the two agents to accomplish a joint hybrid control. Simulation results demonstrate that the STAR-RIS has superiority over other conventional RISs in terms of its energy consumption. Furthermore, both the proposed algorithms outperform the baseline DDPG algorithm, and the joint DDPG-DQN algorithm achieves a superior performance, albeit at an increased computational complexity.
