Design of High-energy Proton-beam Experiment Station at CSNS

China's first proton test beam facility, named the High-energy Proton-beam Experiment Station (HPES), is currently under construction in campus of CSNS, as part of the CSNS-II project. Utilizing protons slowly extracted from the Rapid Cycling Synchrotron of CSNS, HPES will deliver 1.6 GeV proton beam with an adjustable flux ranging from 1E3 to 1E8 protons per second. The station is composed of two dedicated test terminals designed to support comprehensive beam tests, serving as an advanced platform for particle detector development, irradiation hardness studies of aerospace chips, and GeV-proton-induced nuclear data measurements. To characterize the beam, HPES incorporates dedicated flux and profile monitors. For user experiments, the facility is equipped with a high-precision proton telescope offering a positioning resolution of 10 $\mu$m, and a Time-of-Flight (TOF) spectrometer achieving an energy resolution of 1%. Furthermore, a compatible trigger logic unit have been designed to provide precise event tagging, which is essential for data alignment. This paper presents an overview of the detector systems within HPES, discusses their design considerations, and outlines the future prospects of the facility.

Charge-dependent spectral softenings of primary cosmic-rays below the knee

In most particle acceleration or propagation theories, the characteristic features of the cosmic ray spectra due to acceleration limits or propagation phase changes are charge dependent. Alternatively, the interaction scenario would expect mass dependent spectral features in general. The observational verification of which relation takes effect in nature is still lack due to the difficulty of measuring the spectra of individual particles up to very high energies. Here we report direct measurements of the carbon, oxygen, and iron spectra from ~20 gigavolts to ~100 teravolts (~60 teravolts for iron) with 9 years of on-orbit data collected by the Dark Matter Particle Explorer. Distinct spectral softenings have been directly detected in these spectra for the first time. Combined with the updated proton and helium spectra, the spectral softening appears universally at a rigidity of ~15 teravolts. A nuclei mass dependent softening is rejected at a confidence level of >99.999%. Possible interpretations of these results, including a nearby cosmic ray source and other models such as the propagation effect, are discussed.

Neutron capture measurement of the 165Ho at the CSNS Backn facility in the resonance energy region

The neutron capture yield of 165Ho have been measured at the Back-streaming White neutron beam line (Back-n) of the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) using a 4{\pi} BaF2 Gamma Total Absorption Facility (GTAF). The resonance shapes in the 1eV to 1.0keV region were analyzed with the Bayesian R-matrix code SAMMY. For 18 s-wave resonances below 100eV, the resonance energy ER, neutron width {\Gamma}n, and radiative width {\Gamma}{\gamma} were extracted. The statistical analyses of the resonance parameters show that the nearest-neighbour level-spacing distribution follows a Wigner-Dyson form with mean spacing D0 = 4.53(3)eV,indicating chaotic compound-nucleus behaviour; Using the extracted parameters, the s-wave neutron strength function for 165Ho was derived to be 10-4S0 = 2.01(1), in excellent agreement with the values reported in both the Atlas of Neutron Resonances and ENDF/B-VIII.0 data.

Conceptual Design of the Muonium-to-Antimuonium Conversion Experiment (MACE)

The spontaneous conversion of muonium to antimuonium is one of the interesting charged lepton flavor violation phenomena offering a sensitive probe of potential new physics and serving as a tool to constrain the parameter space beyond the Standard Model. The Muonium-to-Antimuonium Conversion Experiment (MACE) is designed to utilize a high-intensity muon beam, a Michel electron magnetic spectrometer, a positron transport system, and a positron detection system, to either discover or constrain this rare process with a conversion probability of $\mathcal{O}(10^{-13})$. This article presents an overview of the theoretical framework as well as a detailed description of the experimental design for the search for muonium-to-antimuonium conversion.

Snowmass2021 Whitepaper: Muonium to antimuonium conversion

The spontaneous muonium to antimuonium conversion is one of the interesting charged lepton flavor violation processes. It serves as a clear indication of new physics and plays an important role in constraining the parameter space beyond Standard Model. MACE is a proposed experiment to probe such a phenomenon and expected to enhance the sensitivity to the conversion probability by more than two orders of magnitude from the current best upper constraint obtained by the PSI experiment two decades ago. Recent developments in the theoretical and experimental aspects to search for such a rare process are summarized.

Search for gamma-ray spectral lines with the DArk Matter Particle Explorer

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is well suitable for searching for monochromatic and sharp $\gamma$-ray structures in the GeV$-$TeV range thanks to its unprecedented high energy resolution. In this work, we search for $\gamma$-ray line structures using five years of DAMPE data. To improve the sensitivity, we develop two types of dedicated data sets (including the BgoOnly data which is the first time to be used in the data analysis for the calorimeter-based gamma-ray observatories) and adopt the signal-to-noise ratio optimized regions of interest (ROIs) for different DM density profiles. No line signals or candidates are found between 10 and 300 GeV in the Galaxy. The constraints on the velocity-averaged cross section for $\chi\chi \to \gamma\gamma$ and the decay lifetime for $\chi \to \gamma\nu$, both at 95% confidence level, have been calculated and the systematic uncertainties have been taken into account. Comparing to the previous Fermi-LAT results, though DAMPE has an acceptance smaller by a factor of $\sim 10$, similar constraints on the DM parameters are achieved and below 100 GeV the lower limits on the decay lifetime are even stronger by a factor of a few. Our results demonstrate the potential of high-energy-resolution observations on dark matter detection.

Back-n White Neutron Source at CSNS and its Applications

Back-streaming neutrons from the spallation target of the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) that emit through the incoming proton channel were exploited to build a white neutron beam facility (the so-called Back-n white neutron source), which was completed in March 2018. The Back-n neutron beam is very intense, at approximately 2*10^7 n/cm^2/s at 55 m from the target, and has a nominal proton beam with a power of 100 kW in the CSNS-I phase and a kinetic energy of 1.6 GeV and a thick tungsten target in multiple slices with modest moderation from the cooling water through the slices. In addition, the excellent energy spectrum spanning from 0.5 eV to 200 MeV, and a good time resolution related to the time-of-flight measurements make it a typical white neutron source for nuclear data measurements; its overall performance is among that of the best white neutron sources in the world. Equipped with advanced spectrometers, detectors, and application utilities, the Back-n facility can serve wide applications, with a focus on neutron-induced cross-section measurements. This article presents an overview of the neutron beam characteristics, the experimental setups, and the ongoing applications at Back-n.

Design of the readout electronics for the DAMPE Silicon Tracker detector

The Silicon Tracker (STK) is a detector of the DAMPE satellite to measure the incidence direction of high energy cosmic ray. It consists of 6 X-Y double layers of silicon micro-strip detectors with 73,728 readout channels. It's a great challenge to readout the channels and process the huge volume of data in the critical space environment. 1152 Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASIC) and 384 ADCs are adopted to readout the detector channels. The 192 Tracker Front-end Hybrid (TFH) modules and 8 identical Tracker Readout Board (TRB) modules are designed to control and digitalize the front signals. In this paper, the design of the readout electronics for STK and its performance will be presented in detail.

Study of measuring methods on spatial resolution of a GEM imaging detector

In this paper, limitations of the common method measuring intrinsic spatial resolution of the GEM imaging detector are presented. Through theoretical analysis and experimental verification, we have improved the common method to avoid these limitations. Using these improved methods, more precise measurement of intrinsic spatial resolution are obtained.
