radarODE: An ODE-Embedded Deep Learning Model for Contactless ECG Reconstruction from Millimeter-Wave Radar

Radar-based contactless cardiac monitoring has become a popular research direction recently, but the fine-grained electrocardiogram (ECG) signal is still hard to reconstruct from millimeter-wave radar signal. The key obstacle is to decouple the cardiac activities in the electrical domain (i.e., ECG) from that in the mechanical domain (i.e., heartbeat), and most existing research only uses pure data-driven methods to map such domain transformation as a black box. Therefore, this work first proposes a signal model for domain transformation, and then a novel deep learning framework called radarODE is designed to fuse the temporal and morphological features extracted from radar signals and generate ECG. In addition, ordinary differential equations are embedded in radarODE as a decoder to provide morphological prior, helping the convergence of the model training and improving the robustness under body movements. After being validated on the dataset, the proposed radarODE achieves better performance compared with the benchmark in terms of missed detection rate, root mean square error, Pearson correlation coefficient with the improvement of 9%, 16% and 19%, respectively. The validation results imply that radarODE is capable of recovering ECG signals from radar signals with high fidelity and can be potentially implemented in real-life scenarios.

HealthGenie: Empowering Users with Healthy Dietary Guidance through Knowledge Graph and Large Language Models

Seeking dietary guidance often requires navigating complex professional knowledge while accommodating individual health conditions. Knowledge Graphs (KGs) offer structured and interpretable nutritional information, whereas Large Language Models (LLMs) naturally facilitate conversational recommendation delivery. In this paper, we present HealthGenie, an interactive system that combines the strengths of LLMs and KGs to provide personalized dietary recommendations along with hierarchical information visualization for a quick and intuitive overview. Upon receiving a user query, HealthGenie performs query refinement and retrieves relevant information from a pre-built KG. The system then visualizes and highlights pertinent information, organized by defined categories, while offering detailed, explainable recommendation rationales. Users can further tailor these recommendations by adjusting preferences interactively. Our evaluation, comprising a within-subject comparative experiment and an open-ended discussion, demonstrates that HealthGenie effectively supports users in obtaining personalized dietary guidance based on their health conditions while reducing interaction effort and cognitive load. These findings highlight the potential of LLM-KG integration in supporting decision-making through explainable and visualized information. We examine the system's usefulness and effectiveness with an N=12 within-subject study and provide design considerations for future systems that integrate conversational LLM and KG.

CALMM-Drive: Confidence-Aware Autonomous Driving with Large Multimodal Model

Decision-making and motion planning constitute critical components for ensuring the safety and efficiency of autonomous vehicles (AVs). Existing methodologies typically adopt two paradigms: decision then planning or generation then scoring. However, the former architecture often suffers from decision-planning misalignment that incurs risky situations. Meanwhile, the latter struggles to balance short-term operational metrics (e.g., immediate motion smoothness) with long-term tactical goals (e.g., route efficiency), resulting in myopic or overly conservative behaviors. To address these issues, we introduce CALMM-Drive, a novel Confidence-Aware Large Multimodal Model (LMM) empowered Autonomous Driving framework. Our approach integrates driving task-oriented Chain-of-Thought (CoT) reasoning coupled with Top-K confidence elicitation, which facilitates high-level reasoning to generate multiple candidate decisions with their confidence levels. Furthermore, we propose a novel planning module that integrates a diffusion model for trajectory generation and a hierarchical refinement process to find the optimal trajectory. This framework enables the selection over trajectory candidates accounting for both low-level solution quality and high-level tactical confidence, which avoids the risks within one-shot decisions and overcomes the limitations in short-sighted scoring mechanisms. Comprehensive evaluations in nuPlan closed-loop simulation environments demonstrate the competitive performance of CALMM-Drive across both common and long-tail benchmarks, showcasing a significant advancement in the integration of uncertainty in LMM-empowered AVs. The code will be released upon acceptance.

Recover from Horcrux: A Spectrogram Augmentation Method for Cardiac Feature Monitoring from Radar Signal Components

Radar-based wellness monitoring is becoming an effective measurement to provide accurate vital signs in a contactless manner, but data scarcity retards the related research on deep-learning-based methods. Data augmentation is commonly used to enrich the dataset by modifying the existing data, but most augmentation techniques can only couple with classification tasks. To enable the augmentation for regression tasks, this research proposes a spectrogram augmentation method, Horcrux, for radar-based cardiac feature monitoring (e.g., heartbeat detection, electrocardiogram reconstruction) with both classification and regression tasks involved. The proposed method is designed to increase the diversity of input samples while the augmented spectrogram is still faithful to the original ground truth vital sign. In addition, Horcrux proposes to inject zero values in specific areas to enhance the awareness of the deep learning model on subtle cardiac features, improving the performance for the limited dataset. Experimental result shows that Horcrux achieves an overall improvement of 16.20% in cardiac monitoring and has the potential to be extended to other spectrogram-based tasks. The code will be released upon publication.

MKG-Rank: Enhancing Large Language Models with Knowledge Graph for Multilingual Medical Question Answering

Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown remarkable progress in medical question answering (QA), yet their effectiveness remains predominantly limited to English due to imbalanced multilingual training data and scarce medical resources for low-resource languages. To address this critical language gap in medical QA, we propose Multilingual Knowledge Graph-based Retrieval Ranking (MKG-Rank), a knowledge graph-enhanced framework that enables English-centric LLMs to perform multilingual medical QA. Through a word-level translation mechanism, our framework efficiently integrates comprehensive English-centric medical knowledge graphs into LLM reasoning at a low cost, mitigating cross-lingual semantic distortion and achieving precise medical QA across language barriers. To enhance efficiency, we introduce caching and multi-angle ranking strategies to optimize the retrieval process, significantly reducing response times and prioritizing relevant medical knowledge. Extensive evaluations on multilingual medical QA benchmarks across Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Swahili demonstrate that MKG-Rank consistently outperforms zero-shot LLMs, achieving maximum 35.03% increase in accuracy, while maintaining an average retrieval time of only 0.0009 seconds.

The Line operators in the G2HDM model

We investigate the global structure of the Gauged Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (G2HDM), a framework that extends the Standard Model by introducing a dark sector governed by the gauge symmetry $U(1)_X \times SU(2)_H$. The full gauge symmetry of the theory, including the visible sector, is given by the universal covering group $\tilde{G} = U(1)_Y \times SU(2)_L \times SU(3)_C \times U(1)_X \times SU(2)_H$. However, the true gauge group may instead be a quotient $G = \tilde{G} / Γ$, where $Γ$ is the center of $\tilde{G}$ or a subgroup thereof, leading to different global structures that cannot be distinguished by local experiments. We explore the physical implications of these global structures, analyzing their effects on Wilson, 't Hooft, and dyonic line operators, as well as the periodicity of the CP-violating $θ$-angles associated with each group factor. Furthermore, we determine the minimal electric and magnetic charges that arise after electroweak symmetry breaking, highlighting their dependence on the choice of $Γ$. These findings provide a systematic characterization of the G2HDM's global properties and their potential phenomenological consequences.

HaploVL: A Single-Transformer Baseline for Multi-Modal Understanding

Recent advancements in large language models (LLMs) have significantly propelled the development of large multi-modal models (LMMs), highlighting the potential for general and intelligent assistants. However, most LMMs model visual and textual modalities separately, leading to recent efforts to develop native LMMs using a single transformer. Despite the promise, these native models are resource-intensive and often exhibit performance gaps compared to their compositional counterparts. To alleviate this issue, we propose a simple yet efficient method to construct a baseline for the native and end-to-end large multi-modal model in a single transformer. First, we propose a new early-fusion LMM that can fuse multi-modal inputs in the early stage and respond to visual instructions in an auto-regressive manner. Second, we devise an efficient training recipe for the proposed model, which harnesses the prior knowledge of the pre-trained models, addressing both the performance limitations and the challenge of resource consumption. The proposed model demonstrates superior performance compared to other LMMs using one transformer and significantly narrows the performance gap with compositional LMMs.

Tackling Data Corruption in Offline Reinforcement Learning via Sequence Modeling

Learning policy from offline datasets through offline reinforcement learning (RL) holds promise for scaling data-driven decision-making while avoiding unsafe and costly online interactions. However, real-world data collected from sensors or humans often contains noise and errors, posing a significant challenge for existing offline RL methods, particularly when the real-world data is limited. Our study reveals that prior research focusing on adapting predominant offline RL methods based on temporal difference learning still falls short under data corruption when the dataset is limited. In contrast, we discover that vanilla sequence modeling methods, such as Decision Transformer, exhibit robustness against data corruption, even without specialized modifications. To unlock the full potential of sequence modeling, we propose Robust Decision Rransformer (RDT) by incorporating three simple yet effective robust techniques: embedding dropout to improve the model's robustness against erroneous inputs, Gaussian weighted learning to mitigate the effects of corrupted labels, and iterative data correction to eliminate corrupted data from the source. Extensive experiments on MuJoCo, Kitchen, and Adroit tasks demonstrate RDT's superior performance under various data corruption scenarios compared to prior methods. Furthermore, RDT exhibits remarkable robustness in a more challenging setting that combines training-time data corruption with test-time observation perturbations. These results highlight the potential of sequence modeling for learning from noisy or corrupted offline datasets, thereby promoting the reliable application of offline RL in real-world scenarios. DynaMath: A Dynamic Visual Benchmark for Evaluating Mathematical Reasoning Robustness of Vision Language Models

The rapid advancements in Vision-Language Models (VLMs) have shown great potential in tackling mathematical reasoning tasks that involve visual context. Unlike humans who can reliably apply solution steps to similar problems with minor modifications, we found that SOTA VLMs like GPT-4o can consistently fail in these scenarios, revealing limitations in their mathematical reasoning capabilities. In this paper, we investigate the mathematical reasoning robustness in VLMs and evaluate how well these models perform under different variants of the same question, such as changes in visual numerical values or function graphs. While several vision-based math benchmarks have been developed to assess VLMs' problem-solving capabilities, these benchmarks contain only static sets of problems and cannot easily evaluate mathematical reasoning robustness. To fill this gap, we introduce DynaMath, a dynamic visual math benchmark designed for in-depth assessment of VLMs. DynaMath includes 501 high-quality, multi-topic seed questions, each represented as a Python program. Those programs are carefully designed and annotated to enable the automatic generation of a much larger set of concrete questions, including many different types of visual and textual variations. DynaMath allows us to evaluate the generalization ability of VLMs, by assessing their performance under varying input conditions of a seed question. We evaluated 14 SOTA VLMs with 5,010 generated concrete questions. Our results show that the worst-case model accuracy, defined as the percentage of correctly answered seed questions in all 10 variants, is significantly lower than the average-case accuracy. Our analysis emphasizes the need to study the robustness of VLMs' reasoning abilities, and DynaMath provides valuable insights to guide the development of more reliable models for mathematical reasoning.

RAGVA: Engineering Retrieval Augmented Generation-based Virtual Assistants in Practice

Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG)-based applications are gaining prominence due to their ability to leverage large language models (LLMs). These systems excel at combining retrieval mechanisms with generative capabilities, resulting in more accurate, contextually relevant responses that enhance user experience. In particular, Transurban, a road operation company, is replacing its rule-based virtual assistant (VA) with a RAG-based VA (RAGVA) to offer more flexible customer interactions and support a wider range of scenarios. In this paper, drawing from the experience at Transurban, we present a comprehensive step-by-step guide for building a conversational application and how to engineer a RAGVA. These guides aim to serve as references for future researchers and practitioners. While the engineering processes for traditional software applications are well-established, the development and evaluation of RAG-based applications are still in their early stages, with numerous emerging challenges remaining uncharted. To address this gap, we conduct a focus group study with Transurban practitioners regarding developing and evaluating their RAGVA. We identified eight challenges encountered by the engineering team and proposed eight future directions that should be explored to advance the development of RAG-based applications. This study contributes to the foundational understanding of a RAG-based conversational application and the emerging AI software engineering challenges it presents.

Exploring the Use of Autonomous Unmanned Vehicles for Supporting Power Grid Operations

This paper explores the use of autonomous unmanned vehicles to support power grid operations. With built-in batteries and the capability to carry additional battery energy storage, the rising number of autonomous vehicles can represent a substantial amount of capacity that is currently underutilized in the power grid. Unlike traditional electric vehicles that require drivers, the operations of autonomous vehicles can be performed without human intervention. To guide idle vehicles to autonomously support power grids, we propose a tractable optimization-based method to effectively integrate these "mobile batteries" into grid operations. During real-time operations, the vehicles are strategically routed to target locations to maintain power balance and reduce operating costs. Numerical studies have confirmed both the validity and the scalability of the proposed algorithm to efficiently integrate autonomous vehicles into routine power system operations.

Graphusion: A RAG Framework for Knowledge Graph Construction with a Global Perspective

Knowledge Graphs (KGs) are crucial in the field of artificial intelligence and are widely used in downstream tasks, such as question-answering (QA). The construction of KGs typically requires significant effort from domain experts. Large Language Models (LLMs) have recently been used for Knowledge Graph Construction (KGC). However, most existing approaches focus on a local perspective, extracting knowledge triplets from individual sentences or documents, missing a fusion process to combine the knowledge in a global KG. This work introduces Graphusion, a zero-shot KGC framework from free text. It contains three steps: in Step 1, we extract a list of seed entities using topic modeling to guide the final KG includes the most relevant entities; in Step 2, we conduct candidate triplet extraction using LLMs; in Step 3, we design the novel fusion module that provides a global view of the extracted knowledge, incorporating entity merging, conflict resolution, and novel triplet discovery. Results show that Graphusion achieves scores of 2.92 and 2.37 out of 3 for entity extraction and relation recognition, respectively. Moreover, we showcase how Graphusion could be applied to the Natural Language Processing (NLP) domain and validate it in an educational scenario. Specifically, we introduce TutorQA, a new expert-verified benchmark for QA, comprising six tasks and a total of 1,200 QA pairs. Using the Graphusion-constructed KG, we achieve a significant improvement on the benchmark, for example, a 9.2% accuracy improvement on sub-graph completion.

Bowen's equations for invariance pressure of control systems

We aim to establish Bowen's equations for upper capacity invariance pressure and Pesin-Pitskel invariance pressure of discrete-time control systems. We first introduce a new invariance pressure called induced invariance pressure on partitions that specializes the upper capacity invariance pressure on partitions, and then show that the two types of invariance pressures are related by a Bowen's equation. Besides, to establish Bowen's equation for Pesin-Pitskel invariance pressure on partitions we also introduce a new notion called BS invariance dimension on subsets. Moreover, a variational principle for BS invariance dimension on subsets is established.

Ferroelectricity in layered bismuth oxide down to 1 nanometer

Atomic-scale ferroelectrics are of great interest for high-density electronics, particularly field-effect transistors, low-power logic, and nonvolatile memories. We devised a film with a layered structure of bismuth oxide that can stabilize the ferroelectric state down to 1 nanometer through samarium bondage. This film can be grown on a variety of substrates with a cost-effective chemical solution deposition. We observed a standard ferroelectric hysteresis loop down to a thickness of ~1 nanometer. The thin films with thicknesses that range from 1 to 4.56 nanometers possess a relatively large remanent polarization from 17 to 50 microcoulombs per square centimeter. We verified the structure with first-principles calculations, which also pointed to the material being a lone pair-driven ferroelectric material. The structure design of the ultrathin ferroelectric films has great potential for the manufacturing of atomic-scale electronic devices.

Line Operators in the Left-Right Symmetric Model

In this paper, we studied line operators in the Left-Right Symmetric Model. The gauge group of Left-Right Symmetric Electroweak Model is ${G} = SU(3) \times SU(2)_{L} \times SU(2)_{R} \times U(1)_{B - L}$. We derived the spectrum of line operators in all possible scenarios within left-right symmetric models. We then studied the $θ$ angles in left-right symmetric model. We also discuss the effect of symmetry breaking on the spectrum of line operators and $θ$ angles.

GS-KGC: A Generative Subgraph-based Framework for Knowledge Graph Completion with Large Language Models

Knowledge graph completion (KGC) focuses on identifying missing triples in a knowledge graph (KG) , which is crucial for many downstream applications. Given the rapid development of large language models (LLMs), some LLM-based methods are proposed for KGC task. However, most of them focus on prompt engineering while overlooking the fact that finer-grained subgraph information can aid LLMs in generating more accurate answers. In this paper, we propose a novel completion framework called \textbf{G}enerative \textbf{S}ubgraph-based KGC (GS-KGC), which utilizes subgraph information as contextual reasoning and employs a QA approach to achieve the KGC task. This framework primarily includes a subgraph partitioning algorithm designed to generate negatives and neighbors. Specifically, negatives can encourage LLMs to generate a broader range of answers, while neighbors provide additional contextual insights for LLM reasoning. Furthermore, we found that GS-KGC can discover potential triples within the KGs and new facts beyond the KGs. Experiments conducted on four common KGC datasets highlight the advantages of the proposed GS-KGC, e.g., it shows a 5.6\% increase in Hits@3 compared to the LLM-based model CP-KGC on the FB15k-237N, and a 9.3\% increase over the LLM-based model TECHS on the ICEWS14.

MixSA: Training-free Reference-based Sketch Extraction via Mixture-of-Self-Attention

Current sketch extraction methods either require extensive training or fail to capture a wide range of artistic styles, limiting their practical applicability and versatility. We introduce Mixture-of-Self-Attention (MixSA), a training-free sketch extraction method that leverages strong diffusion priors for enhanced sketch perception. At its core, MixSA employs a mixture-of-self-attention technique, which manipulates self-attention layers by substituting the keys and values with those from reference sketches. This allows for the seamless integration of brushstroke elements into initial outline images, offering precise control over texture density and enabling interpolation between styles to create novel, unseen styles. By aligning brushstroke styles with the texture and contours of colored images, particularly in late decoder layers handling local textures, MixSA addresses the common issue of color averaging by adjusting initial outlines. Evaluated with various perceptual metrics, MixSA demonstrates superior performance in sketch quality, flexibility, and applicability. This approach not only overcomes the limitations of existing methods but also empowers users to generate diverse, high-fidelity sketches that more accurately reflect a wide range of artistic expressions.

Borrowing the idea of topological pressure determining measure-theoretical entropy in topological dynamical systems, we establish a variational principle for upper metric mean dimension with potential in terms of upper measure-theoretical metric mean dimension of invariant measures. Moreover, the notion of equilibrium state is introduced to characterize these measures that attain the supremum of the variational principle.
