Primitive immersions of constant curvature of surfaces into flag manifolds

We investigate certain immersions of constant curvature from Riemann surfaces into flag manifolds equipped with invariant metrics, namely primitive lifts associated to pseudoholomorphic maps of surfaces into complex Grassmannians. We prove that a primitive immersion from the two-sphere into the full flag manifold which has constant curvature with respect to \emph{at least one} invariant metric is unitarily equivalent to the primitive lift of a Veronese map, hence it has constant curvature with respect to \emph{all} invariant metrics. We prove a partial generalization of this result to the case where the domain is a general simply connected Riemann surface. On the way, we consider the problem of finding the invariant metric on the flag manifold, under a certain normalization condition, that maximizes the induced area of the two-sphere by a given primitive immersion.

Diagrams and harmonic maps, revisited

We extend many known results for harmonic maps from the 2-sphere into a Grassmannian to harmonic maps of finite uniton number from an arbitrary Riemann surface. Our method relies on a new theory of nilpotent cycles arising from the diagrams of F.E.~Burstall and the second author associated to such harmonic maps; these properties arise from a criterion for finiteness of the uniton number found recently by the authors with A.~Aleman. Applications include a new classification result on minimal surfaces of constant curvature and a constancy result for finite type harmonic maps.

Symmetric shift-invariant subspaces and harmonic maps

The Grassmannian model represents harmonic maps from Riemann surfaces by families of shift-invariant subspaces of a Hilbert space. We impose a natural symmetry condition on the shift-invariant subspaces that corresponds to considering an important class of harmonic maps into symmetric and $k$-symmetric spaces. In particular, we obtain new general forms for such symmetric shift-invariant subspaces and for the corresponding extended solutions.

Harmonic maps and shift-invariant subspaces

We investigate in detail the connection between harmonic maps from Riemann surfaces into the unitary group $\U(n)$ and their Grassmannian models: these are families of shift-invariant subspaces of $L^2(S^1,\C^n)$. With the help of operator-theoretic methods we derive a criterion for finiteness of the uniton number which has a large number of applications discussed in the paper.

Harmonic surfaces in the Cayley plane

We consider the twistor theory of nilconformal harmonic maps from a Riemann surface into the Cayley plane $\mathbf{O} P^2=F_4/\mathrm{Spin}(9)$. By exhibiting this symmetric space as a submanifold of the Grassmannian of $10$-dimensional subspaces of the fundamental representation of $F_4$, techniques and constructions similar to those used in earlier works on twistor constructions of nilconformal harmonic maps into classical Grassmannians can also be applied in this case. The originality of our approach lies on the use of the classification of nilpotent orbits in Lie algebras as described by D. Djoković.

Surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^7$ obtained from harmonic maps in $S^6$

We will investigate the local geometry of the surfaces in the $7$-dimensional Euclidean space associated to harmonic maps from a Riemann surface $Σ$ into $S^6$. By applying methods based on the use of harmonic sequences, we will characterize the conformal harmonic immersions $φ:Σ\to S^6$ whose associated immersions $F:Σ\to \mathbb{R}^7$ belong to certain remarkable classes of surfaces, namely: minimal surfaces in hyperspheres; surfaces with parallel mean curvature vector field; pseudo-umbilical surfaces; isotropic surfaces.

Evolutes of plane curves and null curves in Minkowski $3$-space

We use the isotropic projection of Laguerre geometry in order to establish a correspondence between plane curves and null curves in the Minkowski $3$-space. We describe the geometry of null curves (Cartan frame, pseudo-arc parameter, pseudo-torsion, pairs of associated curves) in terms of the curvature of the corresponding plane curves. This leads to an alternative description of all plane curves which are Laguerre congruent to a given one.

Harmonic maps of finite uniton number and their canonical elements

We classify all harmonic maps with finite uniton number from a Riemann surface into an arbitrary compact simple Lie group $G$, whether $G$ has trivial centre or not, in terms of certain pieces of the Bruhat decomposition of the group $Ω_\mathrm{alg}{G}$ of algebraic loops in $G$ and corresponding canonical elements. This will allow us to give estimations for the minimal uniton number of the corresponding harmonic maps with respect to different representations and to make more explicit the relation between previous work by different authors on harmonic two-spheres in classical compact Lie groups and their inner symmetric spaces and the Morse theoretic approach to the study of such harmonic two-spheres introduced by Burstall and Guest. As an application, we will also give some explicit descriptions of harmonic spheres in low dimensional spin groups making use of spinor representations.

Metrics on tiling spaces, local isomorphism and an application of Brown's Lemma

We give an application of a topological dynamics version of multidimensional Brown's lemma to tiling theory: given a tiling of an Euclidean space and a finite geometric pattern of points $F$, one can find a patch such that, for each scale factor $λ$, there is a vector $\vec{t}_λ$ so that copies of this patch appear in the tilling "nearly" centered on $λF+\vec{t}_λ$ once we allow "bounded perturbations" in the structure of the homothetic copies of $F$. Furthermore, we introduce a new unifying setting for the study of tiling spaces which allows rather general group "actions" on patches and we discuss the local isomorphism property of tilings within this setting.

Statistical Stability for Multi-Substitution Tiling Spaces

Given a finite set ${S_1...,S_k}$ of substitution maps acting on a certain finite number (up to translations) of tiles in $\rd$, we consider the multi-substitution tiling space associated to each sequence $\bar a\in {1,...,k}^{\mathbb{N}}$. The action by translations on such spaces gives rise to uniquely ergodic dynamical systems. In this paper we investigate the rate of convergence for ergodic limits of patches frequencies and prove that these limits vary continuously with $\bar a$.
