Algebraic Topology of Certain Sasaki Joins

The join construction produces a third Sasaki manifold from two others, and we investigate the algebraic topology of the joins of circle bundles over surfaces of positive genus with weighted three-spheres. Topologically, such a join has the structure of a lens space bundle over a surface. We calculate invariants determined by the fundamental group, the homology, and the cohomology. We find that, in general, there is torsion in the integral homology of the join. The torsion gives rise to two linking forms, and we identify these linking forms.

Polynomial Invariants, Knot Homologies, and Higher Twist Numbers of Weaving Knots $W(3,n)$

We investigate several conjectures in geometric topology by assembling computer data obtained by studying weaving knots, a doubly infinite family $W(p,n)$ of examples of hyperbolic knots. In particular, we compute some important polynomial knot invariants, as well as knot homologies, for the subclass $W(3,n)$ of this family. We use these knot invariants to conclude that all knots $W(3,n)$ are fibered knots and provide estimates for some geometric invariants of these knots. Finally, we study the asymptotics of the ranks of their Khovanov homology groups. Our investigations provide evidence for our conjecture that, asymptotically as $n$ grows large, the ranks of Khovanov homology groups of $W(3,n)$ are normally distributed.

Conley index methods detecting bifurcations in a modified van der Pol oscillator appearing in heart action models

In this paper, a modified van der Pol oscillator equation is considered which appears in several heart action models. We study its global dynamics and verify many interesting bifurcations such as a Hopf bifurcation, a heteroclinic saddle connection, and a homoclinic saddle connection. Some of these bifurcations are detected by using Conley index methods. We demonstrate how the study of connection matrices and transition matrices shows how to select interesting parameter values for simulations.

A Nutrient-Prey-Predator Model: Stability and Bifurcations

In this paper we consider a model of a nutrient-prey-predator system in a chemostat with general functional responses, using the input concentration of nutrient as the bifurcation parameter. We study the changes in the existence of isolated equilibria and in their stability, as well as the global dynamics, as the nutrient concentration varies. The bifurcations of the system are analytically verified and we identify conditions under which an equilibrium undergoes a Hopf bifurcation and a limit cycle appears. Numerical simulations for specific functional responses illustrate the general results.

Segal operations in the algebraic $K$-theory of topological spaces

We extend earlier work of Waldhausen which defines operations on the algebraic $K$-theory of the one-point space. For a connected simplicial abelian group $X$ and symmetric groups $Σ_n$, we define operations $θ^n \colon A(X) \rightarrow A(X{\times}BΣ_n)$ in the algebraic $K$-theory of spaces. We show that our operations can be given the structure of $E_{\infty}$-maps. Let $ϕ_n \colon A(X{\times}BΣ_n) \rightarrow A(X{\times}EΣ_n) \simeq A(X)$ be the $Σ_n$-transfer. We also develop an inductive procedure to compute the compositions $ϕ_n \circ θ^n$, and outline some applications.

The Jones Polynomial and Khovanov Homology of Weaving Knots $W(3,n)$

In this paper we compute the signature for a family of knots $W(k,n)$, the weaving knots of type $(k,n)$. By work of E.~S.~Lee the signature calculation implies a vanishing theorem for the Khovanov homology of weaving knots. Specializing to knots $W(3,n)$, we develop recursion relations that enable us to compute the Jones polynomial of $W(3,n)$. Using additional results of Lee, we compute the ranks of the Khovanov Homology of these knots. At the end we provide evidence for our conjecture that, asymptotically, the ranks of Khovanov Homology of $W(3,n)$ are {\it normally distributed}.
